You can’t permanently turn off Google AI Overviews across ordinary Search, but you can use the Web filter on an individual search to see text-based links without AI Overviews. Google’s Search Help describes AI Overviews as a core feature that “cannot be turned off.” Search Labs has a separate control for an experiment called “AI in Search”; switching it off is not a documented way to remove every Overview.
Can I turn off Google AI Overviews?
No permanent, account-wide switch for core AI Overviews is documented in Google Search Help. Google says: “AI Overviews are a core Google Search feature, like knowledge panels. Features cannot be turned off.” The practical alternative is to ask Google for a different kind of results page with the Web filter.

It helps to separate three things that can look related but have different controls:
- AI Overviews: A core Search feature. Google does not document a setting that disables it for every ordinary search.
- AI in Search: An experiment managed through Search Labs. Its toggle controls participation in that experiment, not all core Overviews.
- AI Mode: A separate, opt-in Search Labs experiment. Its toggle controls that experience if you have enabled it.
These distinctions matter because turning off one Labs experiment does not mean ordinary Search has become a links-only experience. For that, use the Web filter when you run a search.

How do I make Google show only normal links?
Run your search, then select Web in the filter row below the search box. Google describes the Web results page as showing text-based links without features such as AI Overviews.
- Search on Google as usual.
- Look for the filter row below the search box.
- Select Web. If it is not shown in the row, open More and choose Web.
- Use the resulting page for the text-link results. If you want this view for another query, select Web again on that search.
The filter is an action for an individual search, not a permanent preference documented by Google. Its purpose is to change the results view, not to disable the underlying Search feature.

What is the Web filter in Google Search?
Web is a Search filter for a text-based links view. Google says it omits features such as AI Overviews; the results page is therefore a different presentation from the standard, feature-rich Search page.

Choose it when your priority is to scan links rather than read a generated summary or other Search modules. The standard results view may include additional features, while the Web view is intended to focus on text-based links. Google’s description does not promise that every non-link element of every search page will disappear, so treat it as a links-focused view rather than a universal page-cleanup setting.
Does turning off Search Labs remove AI Overviews?
Not in general. Search Labs’ AI in Search toggle controls the experiment, and Google does not document it as an off switch for core AI Overviews.
How to switch off the AI in Search experiment
- Use a signed-in browser that is not in Incognito mode.
- Open Search Labs and choose Manage.
- Turn off AI in Search.
This changes your participation in that experiment. If your goal is to avoid an Overview on an ordinary Search results page, use the Web filter for that query instead.

How AI Mode is different
AI Mode is another Search Labs experiment, separate from AI in Search and from core AI Overviews. It is opt-in; if you enabled it, use its Labs control to stop using that separate experience. Avoiding AI Mode does not change Google’s documented status of AI Overviews as a core Search feature.
Which option should I use?
Choose based on whether you want to change one results page or stop using a particular experiment. These controls have different scope and produce different Search experiences.

For a single search where you want links, Web is the direct choice. Labs controls are relevant when you want to manage an experiment you joined; they are not substitutes for the Web filter.

Why might the controls look different?
Google warns that Search settings are being updated and may not match every user’s current experience. Filter placement, Search Labs availability, account eligibility, country, language, and rollout status can vary or change.
- Web is missing from the filter row: Open More and look for Web there.
- You cannot find Search Labs or a toggle: Labs availability and account eligibility can vary. The documented AI in Search control requires a signed-in browser outside Incognito.
- A setting changes, but an Overview still appears in ordinary Search: The Labs toggle applies to its experiment, not necessarily core AI Overviews. Use Web on the search where you want text-based links.
If the labels or placement differ, rely on the control’s current name and location in your own Search interface rather than assuming every account or device has an identical layout.
How should I treat information in an AI Overview?
Google warns that AI responses may contain mistakes and recommends checking important information in more than one place. A summary is not a substitute for verifying a consequential claim against other sources, particularly when the details affect a decision.
Use the result view that suits the task: an Overview can provide a quick synthesis, while Web gives you text-based links to inspect. In either case, evaluate important claims rather than treating a generated answer as definitive.

Can I make Web the default view for every Google search?
Google documents Web as a filter to select for a search, not as a permanent account-wide preference. Its help guidance does not establish a setting that automatically applies the filter to every future query.

Google describes Web as a text-based links view without features such as AI Overviews, but that wording is not a guarantee that every page element or ad is removed in every case. The documented purpose is a links-focused results view.
Does everyone see the same Search Labs controls?
No universal interface is guaranteed: Google says settings may be updated, and Labs availability, account eligibility, country, language, and rollout status can vary. If a Labs experiment is not available to your account, its toggle may not appear.
