Canon Dual Pixel 3D (DP3D) can turn one compatible EOS R photograph into an editable 3D model or a short MP4 preview. The practical route is: capture a Dual Pixel RAW image with a supported camera and RF lens, open it in Canon’s Windows-only Dual Pixel 3D Converter, tune the depth effect, then export OBJ or GLB for editing—or MP4 for a quick presentation.

DP3D is a single-shot depth-and-texture workflow, not a complete volumetric scan. It works best when the subject is sharp, well lit, clearly shaped and photographed at the recommended distance. Bokeh, hidden areas, very thin forms and strong reflections can leave incomplete or unstable geometry.

What does Canon Dual Pixel 3D actually create?

Dual Pixel 3D uses depth and phase-detection information recorded by compatible EOS R cameras in a single image. Dual Pixel 3D Converter combines that depth data with the photograph’s texture to generate a 3D model.

You can choose among three official output types:

  • OBJ: an editable mesh format supported by many 3D applications.
  • GLB: a compact glTF-based model format suited to applications and viewers that support packaged 3D assets.
  • MP4: a rendered preview video with optional custom background and effects.

The model represents the area visible in the captured frame. DP3D does not infer a complete, scan-grade replacement for every hidden surface, so it should be treated as a fast 3D imaging and presentation tool rather than a substitute for a full multi-view scan.

How should I capture an image for the best DP3D conversion?

Capture quality determines how much usable depth information the converter has. Set the camera for the appropriate DPRAW mode, keep the subject sharp, and stay within Canon’s distance, ISO and aperture guidance.

RAW capture

  1. Set image quality to RAW.
  2. Enable Dual Pixel RAW.
  3. Turn HDR PQ off.
  4. Use the sRGB color space.

JPEG-with-distance-data capture

For a supported JPEG workflow, use RAW+JPEG, enable distance data and enable Dual Pixel RAW. This preserves the RAW file while recording the JPEG and distance information the converter expects.

Distance, focus and exposure

  • Place the subject about 5–10 times the focal length from the camera. With a 50mm lens, that is approximately 25–50 cm.
  • Keep the image sharp; missed focus reduces the usefulness of both texture and depth information.
  • Use ISO 1600 or lower where possible.
  • Use an aperture of f/5.6 or wider while staying at or below Canon’s f/8 limit. Canon warns that an aperture beyond f/8 can cause a conversion error.

Use even, controlled lighting when you can. The aim is a clearly defined subject with visible surface detail, not a heavily blurred or dramatically reflective setup.

What computer do I need for Dual Pixel 3D Converter?

Canon’s converter is Windows-only. The published support information identifies Windows 11 64-bit, version 1.0.0.13 in the installer package, and the following requirements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Requirement Canon’s published detail
Operating system Windows 11, 64-bit
Processor Intel Core i7 or later recommended
Memory At least 8 GB RAM; 16 GB recommended on the technical page
Free storage At least 2 GB
Display 1024 × 768 or larger
Converter package Version 1.0.0.13 identified by Canon’s support page

The 8 GB figure is a minimum, not a performance guarantee. If you plan to process large RAW files or several images in succession, the published 16 GB recommendation gives the application more working memory. A Mac does not meet the converter’s stated operating-system requirement; use a supported Windows 11 environment rather than assuming the application will run natively on macOS.

How do I import a DP3D capture and adjust its depth?

Once the converter is installed on Windows 11, the basic workflow is short:

  1. Open Dual Pixel 3D Converter.
  2. Choose the folder that contains your captured images.
  3. Select the target image thumbnail.
  4. Open 3D Model Settings.
  5. Adjust the intensity or depth effect while checking the preview.

Use a moderate effect first. Increasing the depth intensity can make a shallow subject look more dimensional, but it cannot recover surfaces that were never visible or depth information lost through blur, reflections or an unsuitable aperture.

Should I export OBJ, GLB or MP4?

Choose the format according to what you need to do next: OBJ or GLB for an asset you will inspect and animate, MP4 for a finished-looking preview with minimal 3D editing.

Output Best use Options Canon documents
OBJ Editing the mesh in a conventional 3D package Export as an editable model; include the background or remove it so only the subject remains
GLB Moving a packaged 3D asset into compatible viewers or applications Export as an editable model; include or remove the background
MP4 Quick sharing or a simple presentation video Add a custom background and effects to the preview

When OBJ or GLB is the better choice

Export OBJ or GLB when you need to change the camera, rotate the object, relight it, animate it or place it in a larger 3D scene. Canon also allows the background to remain in the model or to be removed so the subject stands alone. You can replace the surface texture with another processed JPEG when the original texture needs correction or a different treatment.

When MP4 is enough

MP4 is the fast route when the goal is a shareable clip rather than an editable scene. Canon’s preview workflow can apply a custom background and effects, so you can produce a simple presentation without opening a separate 3D editor.

How do I make a polished video from a Canon DP3D capture?

For a controllable result, export OBJ or GLB and animate it in Blender or another 3D editor. Canon names Blender as an example downstream tool.

  1. Export the converted capture as OBJ or GLB, removing the background if you want a cutout subject.
  2. Import the file into Blender or your chosen 3D editor.
  3. Set the camera angle and framing. Check the model from the angles you intend to show; unrecorded or weakly inferred areas may not hold up from every viewpoint.
  4. Add rotation or another camera move, then set the animation timing.
  5. Light the model so the texture remains legible without exaggerating artifacts along the subject’s edges.
  6. Preview the complete animation, revise the camera and timing, and render the final video from the editor.

This route gives you control over camera movement, rotation, lighting and timing. If those controls are unnecessary, use the converter’s MP4 preview instead; it is quicker but offers less scene-level control.

What subjects and scenes are difficult for DP3D?

DP3D geometry is derived from what the camera can observe in one image. Canon identifies several conditions that make conversion difficult:

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Significant bokeh: strongly blurred regions provide little reliable surface detail.
  • Blind spots: areas hidden from the camera cannot be reconstructed as if they had been photographed.
  • Slender shapes: very thin parts can be lost, misshaped or disconnected.
  • Strong reflections: changing or mirror-like highlights can confuse depth and texture interpretation.

For a more dependable result, choose a sharp, well-lit subject with a recognizable silhouette and visible surface texture. Avoid treating the output as complete geometry for engineering measurement, hidden-surface inspection or a scan-grade asset unless you independently verify every critical area.

How does DP3D compare with conventional photogrammetry?

DP3D and photogrammetry solve related problems with different capture strategies. DP3D uses one compatible camera exposure and Canon’s Dual Pixel depth data; conventional photogrammetry normally combines multiple views to estimate a broader surface.

Decision factor DP3D Conventional photogrammetry
Capture count Single shot Multiple photographs from different viewpoints are generally required
Equipment and setup One supported EOS R body, listed RF lens and converter Camera setup plus a multi-image capture and reconstruction workflow
Hidden-surface completeness Limited to the visible capture and the depth information available from it Can cover more sides when those sides are photographed
Setup time Fast capture and a focused conversion step More shooting, image management and reconstruction time
Editability OBJ or GLB can be taken into a 3D editor Usually produces a mesh and texture for further editing after reconstruction
Primary output need Quick interactive asset or MP4 preview from one image Broader multi-view reconstruction when surface coverage matters

Canon’s published material does not provide a numerical accuracy benchmark comparing DP3D with photogrammetry, so there is no defensible accuracy percentage to quote. The practical decision is whether one-shot speed and convenience outweigh the need for more complete surface coverage.

What should I check when a conversion fails?

Most avoidable failures come from compatibility, capture settings or an unsupported computer environment. Check these in order:

  1. Camera and lens: confirm that both the EOS R body and RF lens appear on Canon’s supported lists.
  2. Operating system: confirm that the converter is running on 64-bit Windows 11.
  3. Capture mode: verify Dual Pixel RAW was enabled, HDR PQ was off and sRGB was selected. For the JPEG-with-distance-data route, verify RAW+JPEG and distance data.
  4. Aperture: check that the setting did not go beyond f/8; Canon warns that this can trigger a conversion error.
  5. Focus and subject distance: recapture a sharp image at roughly 5–10 times the focal length if the original is soft or outside the recommended range.
  6. Scene conditions: reduce severe bokeh and reflections, and avoid subjects dominated by very thin or hidden parts.
  7. System resources: check for at least 8 GB RAM and 2 GB free storage; 16 GB RAM is the published recommendation on the technical page.

If a technically valid image still produces weak geometry, the limitation may be the subject rather than the software. Repositioning the camera to reveal more of the form and improving focus and lighting is more useful than repeatedly increasing the depth-effect intensity.

What is the most reliable DP3D workflow?

Use this checklist before you press the shutter:

  • Supported EOS R body and listed RF lens.
  • RAW with Dual Pixel RAW enabled, or RAW+JPEG with distance data for the supported JPEG route.
  • HDR PQ off and sRGB selected.
  • Subject approximately 5–10 focal lengths away.
  • Sharp focus, ISO 1600 or lower, and an aperture at f/5.6 or wider without exceeding f/8.
  • Windows 11 64-bit computer meeting Canon’s RAM, storage and display requirements.

After capture, import the folder, select the image, tune 3D Model Settings, then choose OBJ or GLB for a controllable 3D asset or MP4 for a quick preview. For a more polished animation, bring the model into Blender and set the camera, rotation, lighting and timing yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert a normal JPEG that was not captured for Dual Pixel 3D?

DP3D conversion depends on the depth and distance information recorded during capture. A JPEG without the required capture data should not be expected to provide the same conversion path; recapture using Canon’s RAW or RAW+JPEG settings for DP3D.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a 50mm lens for Canon DP3D?

No. Canon lists several RF primes and zooms, including the RF50mm F1.8 STM. The 50mm example only illustrates the distance rule: five to ten focal lengths is about 25–50 cm at 50mm.

Can DP3D make a complete model of the back of an object?

Only the area represented by the captured view and available depth data is generated. To show a hidden back surface reliably, you need a capture method that records that surface, such as a separate multi-view workflow.

Is DP3D suitable for measurement or manufacturing parts?

Canon’s material describes an imaging and preview solution, not a certified metrology system. Because bokeh, blind spots, slender forms and reflections can degrade geometry, verify critical dimensions with an appropriate measurement workflow.
