For smoother indie horror on PC, start with the game’s balanced or medium graphics preset, then tune one setting at a time in a demanding scene. Keep shadows, lighting, and other visual cues readable while reducing effects that cost performance; for audio, first try headphones you already own and compare the game’s headphone mode with one Windows spatial-sound option. The goal is consistent frame delivery and clear positional cues—not a universal preset or a guaranteed way to make a game scarier.
What should you change first?
Begin with a baseline so each adjustment has a meaningful comparison. Note the game’s resolution, graphics preset, display refresh rate, frame-rate cap, and whether your monitor supports variable refresh rate (VRR). If the game offers a balanced or medium preset, use it as a starting point rather than assuming every title has the same options.

- Choose a demanding, repeatable scene. Use the same area or sequence for each comparison. If the game provides a performance display, observe it there; also pay attention to recurring hitching, not just an average FPS reading.
- Change one setting at a time. Record the starting setting and result, make one adjustment, and compare again. Game menus, driver features, and results vary by title and hardware. AMD documents per-application graphics profiles and notes that available features depend on the system.
- Judge the image as well as performance. Check both still and moving scenes for lost detail, flicker, or softness. In horror games, a shadow, silhouette, or small object may be part of the visual information you need to read the scene.
There is no evidence here for a universal FPS target or a guaranteed gain from any one setting. Prefer a cap and graphics mix the PC can deliver consistently over a high but erratic reading. A brief peak FPS number is less useful if the game repeatedly pauses or dips during movement. If there is no in-game performance display, use the same scene and your own observation consistently rather than changing several options at once.
Which graphics settings are worth adjusting?
Reduce expensive effects selectively, while preserving the details that make a dark scene legible. The cost of a setting depends on the particular game and hardware, so treat these as priorities to compare rather than guaranteed performance fixes. If a game’s options are limited, do not assume you are missing a universal set of controls; not every indie title exposes the same menu.

Lighting, shadows, and volumetric effects
Compare high with medium for lighting, shadows, and volumetric effects before switching them all off. Medium may retain more of the intended scene than a low or disabled setting. Check whether a change removes a useful light or shadow cue, and compare motion as well as a still frame. A still image can look clear while moving light or flickering shadows make an object harder to recognize in play.
NVIDIA’s 2019 graphics guide for Control reported approximately 9–11 FPS gained when volumetric lighting changed from high to medium in that game’s tested settings. That is an example from Control, not an expected gain or benchmark for indie horror titles generally. It is a reason to test medium volumetric lighting when available, not a reason to assume that every game’s lighting behaves the same way.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf shadows are too dark to read, first check the game’s calibration or brightness image and make sure the display is set up as the game expects. Then compare a lighting or shadow quality step rather than immediately raising gamma until every scene looks gray. A lighting setting can affect both performance and the image’s contrast; the useful setting is the one that keeps essential shapes distinguishable without erasing the intended darkness.
Anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering
Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges, but higher levels can cost performance. Compare a lower level if the frame cost outweighs the visual improvement in your scene. Look at fine outlines and moving edges so you can tell whether the reduction creates distracting jaggies or meaningfully improves delivery.
AMD’s guidance also notes that anisotropic filtering can sharpen angled surfaces and generally has a small performance cost; it may be worth retaining when texture clarity matters. These two settings do different jobs, so reducing anti-aliasing does not mean you must also reduce anisotropic filtering. AMD’s graphics guidance describes these trade-offs, but the actual cost and visible benefit still depend on the game and system.
Render scale, upscaling, and output resolution
If the game offers render scale or a supported upscaling option, compare it at the same display output resolution before lowering the display resolution itself. In a documented implementation, NVIDIA describes lower internal rendering resolution while the interface remains at native resolution. This behavior is implementation-specific, not a promise for every game.

Inspect small objects and dark edges after reducing render scale. If a clue becomes too soft to identify, restore clarity and try a different setting instead. Lowering the display resolution may affect the whole image, including the interface, depending on the game and display setup. Compare the same object from the same distance, and check it while moving; a setting that looks acceptable in a menu or paused scene may obscure a clue during play.
Motion blur, film grain, chromatic aberration, and camera shake
When these options exist, compare them for readability and comfort. Turning them down may make movement or details easier for you to follow, but no universal FPS improvement is established for these effects. Keep the setting that best balances visual clarity and the game’s presentation. These are personal comparisons, not guaranteed performance switches: leave an effect on if you prefer its look and it does not interfere with reading the scene.
Brightness and gamma
If the game provides a calibration image, use it rather than choosing a universal brightness or gamma number. Adjust until the intended dark details are distinguishable without flattening every scene into gray; no single gamma value is established for all games or displays. Make this adjustment after selecting a graphics mode, then revisit it if a substantial change to lighting or display output alters the image.
How do you reduce tearing or uneven motion?
First identify the problem: tearing, uneven motion, and slow response are different complaints, and V-Sync, a frame-rate cap, and VRR address them differently. Compare an attainable cap with the game’s V-Sync behavior instead of assuming one choice suits every display. If the image splits across a horizontal line during movement, that points to tearing; repeated judder or hitching is a different symptom and may remain even after tearing is addressed.
| Option | What it addresses | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| V-Sync | Can prevent tearing by synchronizing presentation with the display, but may not suit every frame-delivery or response preference. | Compare the game with V-Sync on and off in the same scene. Microsoft notes that a game presented without V-Sync can tear. |
| Frame-rate cap | Limits output to a chosen rate; an attainable cap can be compared for steadier delivery. | Use a rate the system can sustain in demanding scenes rather than choosing a target by assumption. |
| VRR | Lets a compatible display adapt its refresh to the frames being delivered. | It requires compatible display hardware and drivers. Microsoft says the Windows option appears only when the machine has the necessary drivers and a VRR-capable monitor. |
Microsoft’s DirectX guidance describes tearing and possible responses including V-Sync, matching frame rate to refresh, and VRR. Its Windows graphics-settings explanation makes VRR eligibility conditional on the required hardware and drivers. The Windows message is explicit: “This setting will only appear if your machine has the necessary drivers and a VRR capable monitor.”
For a practical comparison, keep the scene and graphics settings fixed while testing the game’s V-Sync behavior and an attainable cap. If tearing is the main complaint, V-Sync may help; if you prefer another frame-delivery behavior, compare rather than treating it as a universal on/off rule. A cap cannot make an overloaded system render faster, and VRR is not a software-only option when the display lacks support. VRR is worth considering only when your display and hardware qualify and the problem you want to address makes it relevant.

For eligible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games played windowed or borderless, Windows’ Optimizations for windowed games can reduce presentation latency. This is not a universal fix for every graphics API, game, or console; Microsoft describes the feature for the eligible windowed-game case. If your title is outside that specific case, do not expect this setting to be a general stutter remedy.
How should you set up headphones and spatial audio?
Select the actual playback device first, then compare ordinary stereo, the game’s headphone mode if available, and one system spatial renderer. Use the same recognizable sound cue for each comparison, and avoid stacking virtual surround processing by default. A footstep, door, or other repeated cue can help you judge whether a sound is easier to place in front, behind, or to either side.
- Choose the output device. Select the headphones or speakers you actually want to use. If both are available, compare them in the same scene. Make sure the game is sending audio to the device you intend to hear; otherwise a mode comparison is not meaningful.
- Try the game’s headphone option. Turn it on if the game offers one, then listen for whether recognizable sounds are easier to place. Some games may not include this control. A game-specific headphone or HRTF mode is a separate option from a Windows spatial renderer, so compare them individually.
- Compare a single Windows spatial option. In Windows Sound settings, select the playback device and choose Windows Sonic for Headphones if available. Microsoft also names Dolby Access and DTS Sound Unbound as options; availability does not establish their current pricing. Microsoft’s developer documentation says spatial sound can work with any pair of headphones, so specialized “7.1” hardware is not a prerequisite.
- Listen before adding another processor. Compare stereo, the game’s headphone mode, and one system spatial mode separately. Processing can conflict: in its documented setup, SteelSeries says Sonar disables DTS. That example does not establish how every game or headset combination behaves. If a mode sounds less clear or loses a cue, return to the simpler setup.
- Keep cues audible and volume comfortable. If the game separates dialogue, music, ambience, and effects, adjust them cautiously so an important cue is not buried by louder sounds. There is no universal slider percentage or volume setting. Make small changes and judge speech and environmental cues in the same scene.
Microsoft explains that virtualized headphone playback can add front-to-back as well as left-to-right localization cues. That does not guarantee that every game’s mix will sound more natural with processing enabled. A spatial mode is something to compare against stereo, not a mandatory upgrade or a promise that a particular direction will always be obvious. See Microsoft’s explanation of virtualized surround sound over headphones.
Start with gear you own. Wired stereo gaming headphones are one reasonable product category to consider if you need headphones, but this tuning workflow does not establish a best model or show that buying a headset is necessary. Try the game’s own mix and Windows spatial sound with existing headphones first. Likewise, a VRR-capable gaming monitor is a conditional consideration for a player whose display problem calls for VRR, not a required purchase for smoother horror games.
How do you choose between a preset and custom settings?
A preset is the faster starting point; custom tuning gives you more control over the trade-off between performance and readable horror imagery. Compare options on the problem you are trying to solve rather than changing every available setting at once. A preset can also be a useful reset point if a long series of custom changes makes it hard to tell which one caused a problem.
| Choice | Useful when | Trade-off to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced or medium preset | You want a quick baseline. | It may lower an effect you want to preserve or leave an expensive option enabled. |
| Custom graphics settings | A specific effect is causing trouble, or a visual cue needs to remain clear. | More changes take longer to compare; adjust one variable at a time. |
| Native rendering | Fine detail and dark-scene legibility matter most. | It may leave less performance headroom on a given system. |
| Render scaling | You need to compare performance headroom without first changing output resolution. | Reduced internal resolution can soften details; inspect clues and edges. |
| Stereo, game headphone mode, or Windows spatial sound | You want to compare how a specific cue is localized. | Game support and processing compatibility vary; compare modes rather than stacking them. |
Use headphones you already own before considering new gear. Spatial sound does not require a specialized headset; a VRR display is a conditional hardware consideration only if tearing or frame-to-refresh behavior is the issue you want to address. The available options and performance effect depend on the game, system, and display, so avoid spending money to solve a problem a settings comparison may resolve.

What is a practical tuning sequence?
Use this order to avoid losing track of which change helped or made the image harder to read:
- Record the baseline: resolution, preset, refresh rate, cap, and VRR support.
- Find a demanding scene and note recurring hitching, tearing, or unclear audio cues.
- Start from balanced or medium, where available.
- Compare one graphics setting at a time, beginning with costly lighting or volumetric options, then anti-aliasing or render scale if needed.
- Recheck dark-scene detail and motion after each visual change; restore any setting that hides useful information.
- Address display symptoms separately: compare V-Sync and an attainable cap for tearing or uneven delivery; consider VRR only with compatible hardware.
- Choose the output device, compare stereo with the game’s headphone mode and one Windows spatial option, and keep the clearest comfortable result.
Return to the same scene after the sequence. If performance improved but an object or sound cue is now harder to interpret, undo the relevant change and test another variable. The useful result is a setup you can sustain and read, rather than a list of settings copied from a different game or PC.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do these Windows graphics and audio settings apply to console versions too?
Not necessarily. The workflow here is for PC, and Windows features such as windowed-game optimizations or Windows spatial sound do not define the options available in a console version. Check the console game’s own display and audio menus.
How do I stop an indie horror game from stuttering?
Start with balanced or medium settings where available, choose a repeatable demanding scene, and change one graphics option at a time. Compare recurring hitching as well as average FPS. There is no universal setting or guaranteed FPS target; results depend on the title and hardware.

Should V-Sync be on or off for horror games?
There is no universal answer. V-Sync can prevent tearing, while an attainable frame-rate cap and VRR address frame delivery differently. Compare the game’s V-Sync behavior in the same scene, and use VRR only if your display, drivers, and system support it.
Why are the shadows too dark to see?
Use the game’s calibration image if it has one, and compare lighting or shadow settings in small steps. Avoid raising gamma to a universal number or making every scene gray; preserve the intended darkness while keeping important shapes distinguishable.

Should I use headphones or spatial audio?
Try the headphones you already own, compare ordinary stereo with the game’s headphone mode if available, then test one Windows spatial option such as Windows Sonic for Headphones. Keep the mode that makes cues clearest and most comfortable; do not stack virtualizers by default.
Do I need to buy a surround-sound headset to hear positional audio?
No. Microsoft says spatial sound can work with any pair of headphones, so you can first compare your existing headphones with the game’s headphone mode or a Windows spatial option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes changing volumetric lighting from high to medium always add 9–11 FPS?
No. NVIDIA reported that range for its 2019 Control guide and the settings tested in that game. It is not a general result for other titles, including indie horror.
Will lowering render scale make the game’s interface smaller?
Not necessarily. NVIDIA documents an implementation where internal rendering resolution can be lowered while the interface remains at native resolution, but behavior varies by game. Check interface and dark-scene detail in the title you are playing.
Do I need a VRR monitor?
No. VRR is relevant only if you want to address a display or frame-to-refresh issue and have compatible hardware and drivers. Microsoft says the Windows VRR option appears only when the necessary drivers and a VRR-capable monitor are present.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start at balanced or medium, compare one setting at a time in the same demanding scene, and keep the lighting and details you need to read the horror image. For audio, use headphones you already own and compare stereo, the game’s headphone mode, and one Windows spatial option. Tune for consistent delivery and comfortable, clear cues—not a universal preset, a required gear upgrade, or a promised increase in scares.
