Most Minecraft Dungeons II co-op failures are caused by mismatched game builds, the wrong Microsoft or platform account, an offline hero being used for an online session, missing console multiplayer permissions, or a family-account license restriction. Update every copy, sign in again, select an explicitly online hero, then recreate the lobby and use a fresh invitation or party code. Minecraft Dungeons II launched on September 29, 2026, supports up to four players in couch, online, and mixed co-op, and offers cross-play among Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The October 7 version 1.1.2.0 hotfix also addressed several online-game crashes, so troubleshooting should start with the current build rather than older router advice.
What should I check first when Minecraft Dungeons II co-op will not connect?
Use this order: establish that every player has the same current version, refresh both account sign-ins, confirm that the host and joiner are using online heroes, recreate the lobby, and then check subscriptions and family permissions. These checks separate account and game-state problems from network problems without changing router settings unnecessarily.

- Confirm each player is on the same game build, including the latest hotfix available for the platform.
- Fully quit the game, sign in to the intended Microsoft account and platform account, and relaunch.
- Choose a hero marked or created as online. An offline hero is reported by players to be unable to enter an online session.
- Have the host create a new lobby and send a new invitation or eight-character party code.
- On a console, verify the account has the platform’s online multiplayer subscription and permission to play online.
- For a child or family account, check the guardian relationship, multiplayer setting, and ownership or Game Pass entitlement.
If local couch co-op works but an online player cannot join, the console account, entitlement, hero type, or cross-play path is more likely than a controller or local-network fault.
Are all players running the same Minecraft Dungeons II version?
They must be on compatible builds. Mojang’s version 1.1.2.0 hotfix, published October 7, 2026, fixed client and server crashes, including a crash when leaving an online game. Because the game remains in its launch-period update cycle, a player who has not received the same update can see missing invites, failed joins, or a disconnect after loading.

How to update and verify the build
- Close Minecraft Dungeons II on every device rather than leaving it suspended.
- Open the device’s game library or launcher and check for an update. On consoles, use the game’s options menu and choose the update check if the platform provides one.
- Let the download and installation finish on every player’s device.
- Launch the game and compare the version shown on the title screen or in the settings/about area. Do not rely on one player’s version; check all of them.
- Recreate the party after updating. A lobby created before the update can retain a stale session even when the game itself is current.
If one platform does not yet show the update, do not try to bypass the mismatch with repeated invitations. Wait for that platform’s release to become available, then test again. Re-check the current changelog whenever an old workaround suddenly stops working.
How do I fix “offline” status and account sign-in problems?
Refresh the complete sign-in chain: the Microsoft account used by the game and the platform account used by the device. Mojang said in its 2026 launch update that most login and account-linking issues had been resolved on the backend and advised affected players to try again.

- From the game’s account or profile screen, note which Microsoft account is connected. Make sure it is the account the player intends to use, not a remembered account belonging to another household member.
- Sign out where the platform allows it, then sign back in to the correct Microsoft account and the correct Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Steam, or Windows profile.
- Fully quit the game. On a console, close the suspended game from the system menu instead of simply returning to the dashboard.
- Restart the device, launch the game, and wait for account linking to finish before opening the multiplayer menu.
- Ask the host to create a new session after every player has completed the relaunch.
An “offline” label can describe account or service state rather than a broken home network. If the status remains after a clean relaunch, record the exact wording and proceed to the service-status and permission checks below.
Why can’t an offline hero join an online session?
Current player reports indicate that Minecraft Dungeons II separates offline and online heroes. An offline hero may be playable locally but unavailable when a friend hosts an online game. Mojang has not published a universal conversion procedure for turning an existing offline save into an online hero, so treat this as a practical reported behavior rather than a guaranteed permanent rule.
Create or select an online hero
- Return to the main menu and open hero selection.
- Create a new hero or select one explicitly identified as online. Do not assume that a hero used in couch play is online.
- Enter the online multiplayer menu with that hero selected.
- Join a freshly created lobby or have the host send a new invite.
Do not delete an offline save while testing. Keep it intact, use an online hero for the diagnostic, and note whether that change alone makes the invitation or join button appear. If the online hero works, the result identifies the save type as the immediate cause; it does not prove that the offline character can be converted safely.

How does cross-play joining work across PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch?
Minecraft Dungeons II officially supports cross-play on Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Players currently report an eight-character party-code flow for cross-platform joining. The code is session-specific, so an old code can fail after the host leaves, changes heroes, or recreates the lobby.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a fresh party code
- Have the host select an online hero and create a new online lobby.
- Open the party or invite panel and display the newly generated eight-character code.
- On the joining device, open the cross-play or party-code join option and enter the characters exactly, including any letters that look similar to numbers.
- If the code is rejected, cancel the join screen, have the host close the lobby, create another one, and enter the new code.
- Once everyone appears in the party, start the game from the host’s lobby rather than launching a mission before the joiner finishes loading.
Cross-play availability does not remove account, subscription, or family restrictions. A player can be on a supported platform and still be blocked by the platform profile’s online-play setting or by an entitlement that belongs to a different account.
Could a subscription, family setting, or game license be blocking co-op?
Yes. Online console multiplayer requires the platform’s online subscription. Child and family accounts add separate controls: multiplayer permission, the guardian relationship, and the account that owns the game or Game Pass entitlement all need to line up.
Check the entitlement path
- Identify which account purchased the game or holds the applicable subscription entitlement.
- Confirm that the player launching the game is allowed to use that entitlement under the platform’s sharing rules.
- Verify that online multiplayer is enabled for the specific child account, not only for the adult or guardian profile.
- Check whether communication, cross-network play, or friend-invite permissions are separately restricted.
- After changing a family setting, sign out and back in on the affected device before testing another invitation.
Testing with the licensed adult profile can help identify an entitlement problem, but it is only a diagnostic. It does not establish that the family account is permanently fixed or that the platform’s sharing configuration is correct for every member.
How do I troubleshoot co-op Error 0020?
Error 0020 is a distinct, documented account-and-license issue rather than a generic signal to reinstall the game. Mojang’s issue report describes it when the primary account starts online couch co-op and family members attempt to join. The report was reopened, and Mojang has not published a universal fix.

- Play with your Xbox Wireless Controller on Windows PCs, laptops, and tablets. Not compatible with controllers designed for Xbox 360.
- Use it with PC games, and Xbox One games streamed to Windows 10.
- Simply bind the Adapter to your Wireless Controller to enable the same gaming experience you are used to on Xbox One, including in-game chat and high quality stereo audio.
- Features a 66% smaller design, wireless stereo sound support and the ability to connect up to eight controllers at once, plus up to 4 chat headsets or 2 stereo headsets.
Run a controlled Error 0020 test
- Write down which profile owns the game or Game Pass entitlement, which profile starts the session, and which profiles are child or family accounts.
- Confirm that all profiles have multiplayer permission and that the console subscription is active.
- Start the game from the affected family member’s licensed or otherwise authorized profile as a diagnostic only.
- Try the same couch-plus-online arrangement again and record whether the error changes, disappears, or moves to another player.
- Return to the original profile arrangement and preserve the exact error text for a support or bug report.
A successful test under the authorized profile points toward account ownership or sharing rules; it does not prove that changing profiles is the supported long-term solution. Avoid repeatedly changing family settings without recording the original configuration, because that can make the failure harder to reproduce.
When should I investigate Minecraft services or my network?
Check service and network causes after versions, accounts, hero type, lobby creation, and permissions have been verified. Official Minecraft multiplayer guidance puts host availability, service status, game versions, account permissions, subscriptions, custom DNS, and port settings ahead of drastic router changes.
Network checks that preserve your current setup
- Confirm that the host is online and can reach the game’s multiplayer menu before inviting anyone.
- Check the platform’s service-status page for an outage affecting sign-in, multiplayer, or account services.
- Temporarily remove unusual custom DNS or manually configured port settings only if you understand how to restore them.
- Restart the modem or router once, then test with the normal network before changing advanced firewall rules.
- If possible, test the joining device on a different connection, such as a phone hotspot, solely to distinguish a home-network path problem from an account problem.
Do not infer a service outage from one failed invitation. A single account restriction, stale lobby, or offline hero can produce the same visible symptom.
What does local co-op working tell me?
Local play is a useful comparison because it removes the remote-session path, but it does not validate online entitlements or account permissions. Use the differences below to choose the next check.
| Comparison | What it isolates | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Local couch co-op works; online joining fails | Online account, subscription, family permission, hero type, service, or cross-play path | Refresh sign-ins, select online heroes, verify entitlement and multiplayer permissions, then use a fresh party code |
| Online works on the same platform; cross-play fails | Cross-play lobby, code, platform account link, or cross-network permission | Recreate the lobby and test a new code with all accounts signed in |
| One player cannot join any host | That player’s account, build, hero, or network | Run the affected player’s update, sign-in, online-hero, and subscription checks independently |
| Everyone disconnects when leaving or loading | Client or server stability | Confirm version 1.1.2.0 or a newer build and report the reproducible crash sequence |
| Error 0020 appears only with family profiles | License sharing or child-account restrictions | Perform the authorized-profile diagnostic and preserve the account configuration in the report |
What should I do when the invite button is missing?
A missing invite control usually means the game does not consider the current profile or session eligible for online play. Check the online hero first, then the account status and lobby state.

- Confirm that the Microsoft and platform accounts show as signed in.
- Verify that the host has online multiplayer access and that family restrictions do not hide invitations.
- Create a new online lobby and wait for the multiplayer panel to finish loading before opening the invite screen.
If the button appears for one profile but not another on the same device, that difference is more useful than a router reset: compare the profiles’ permissions, subscriptions, and hero types.
What if the game disconnects after a player joins?
First eliminate a stale session and a build mismatch. Have every player quit completely, update, sign in again, select an online hero, and let the host create a new lobby. If the failure happens specifically when exiting an online game, update before testing because version 1.1.2.0 addressed that crash class.
Record whether the disconnect affects everyone or only one client, whether it occurs during loading or in a mission, and whether local play remains stable. That distinction gives support a reproducible path instead of a generic “co-op is broken” description.
How should I report a problem that remains?
Escalate only after the controlled checks above produce the same failure. Use Minecraft Help or Mojang’s official feedback and bug-report route, and include enough detail for the account and session combination to be reproduced.
Include these details
- Platform for every participant, including whether the PC copy is Windows or Steam.
- Game version shown on each device.
- Whether each hero is online or offline.
- Microsoft account and platform-account arrangement, described without passwords or other sensitive information.
- Console multiplayer subscription and which account owns the game or Game Pass entitlement.
- Child, guardian, or family settings relevant to the session.
- Exact error text, especially Error 0020, and the screen where it appears.
- Whether local-only co-op works, whether cross-play is involved, and whether a fresh party code was tested.
- The precise sequence that triggers the failure, including who starts the lobby and who joins.
Keep the report factual and reproducible. If a workaround helped, label it as an observation rather than claiming it is a confirmed fix; this matters especially for offline-hero behavior and family-account tests that are currently based on player reports.

Which co-op setup is easiest to diagnose?
When several variables are failing at once, begin with the simplest arrangement and add complexity one factor at a time.
| Setup | Variables removed | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Two players on one console | Remote network and cross-play | Checking controllers, local profiles, and couch-session behavior |
| Two players on the same platform online | Cross-platform compatibility | Checking online entitlement, hero type, account sign-in, and service access |
| Cross-play with a fresh party code | Old invitation or stale lobby | Checking platform account linking and cross-network permissions |
| Family account plus licensed adult profile | Unclear ownership path | Diagnosing Error 0020 and entitlement restrictions |
Change one variable per test and write down the result. That approach is faster than simultaneously reinstalling, changing DNS, switching accounts, and rebuilding the lobby, because you can identify which condition actually changed the outcome.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert an offline Minecraft Dungeons II hero into an online hero?
There is no confirmed universal conversion process published by Mojang. Keep the offline save, create or select an online hero for testing, and avoid deleting or overwriting the original character while investigating.
Why does couch co-op work when online co-op does not?
Couch play does not require the same remote-service path, console multiplayer subscription, or cross-play permissions. A successful local session therefore does not prove that every participating account is entitled to online multiplayer.
Will reinstalling Minecraft Dungeons II fix connection errors?
Reinstallation is not a first-line fix for account, entitlement, hero-type, or service problems, and it can complicate save troubleshooting. Verify builds, sign-ins, permissions, and a fresh lobby first; reinstall only when platform support specifically recommends it.
Is Error 0020 caused by my internet connection?
The documented Error 0020 case involves a primary account starting online couch co-op while family members join, with Mojang’s investigation focused on guardian accounts, licensing, and child-account restrictions. Treat it as an account and entitlement diagnostic before changing router settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan mixed couch-and-online parties include players on different platforms?
The game’s advertised modes include mixed co-op and cross-play across its supported Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 versions. Each participant still has to satisfy the sign-in, permission, and online-access requirements of their own platform.
