Local subtitle transcription that crawls or stops with a CUDA out-of-memory message is usually a configuration mismatch, not proof that your computer is unusable. The model size, transcription engine, acceleration backend, available CPU/GPU memory and application state all affect the run. Start by recording those details, then test a smaller model on a representative clip, verify that the intended GPU backend is active, and inspect the application logs for missing or quarantined files. Only consider new hardware after those checks show a genuine VRAM or compute limit. The exact remedy depends on the app and engine: Subtitle Edit, Buzz, Nextcloud Local Whisper and MacWhisper document different backends and resource requirements.

Why does local AI subtitle transcription become slow or run out of memory?

There is no single cause or universal fix. Local speech-to-text is a chain of an application, an engine, a model and a hardware backend. A large Whisper model may be accurate but require more disk, memory and processing time; a smaller model may finish quickly with some loss of accuracy. An engine can also fall back from GPU acceleration to CPU, or fail while loading a model because the available VRAM is insufficient.

Subtitle Edit documents several local engines and platform-dependent CPU and GPU paths. Its guidance treats model size as a direct accuracy-versus-time trade-off and specifically recommends trying a smaller model after CUDA out-of-memory errors. Buzz gives similar advice for slow jobs, including trying a lower Whisper model size or Whisper.cpp. These recommendations are diagnostic experiments, not a promise that one model is fastest on every computer.

First decide which symptom you have:

  • Slow from the first seconds: the selected model may be demanding, the job may be using CPU instead of GPU, or the engine may be configured for a compatibility path.
  • Failure while loading: the model or executable may be missing, quarantined, incompatible with the selected backend, or too large for available memory.
  • Failure after processing begins: the workload may exhaust VRAM or system memory as audio is processed, or another application may have consumed resources.
  • Slow only on one computer: compare the engine, model, operating system, backend and hardware rather than assuming the media file is the cause.

Do not use a speed number from one application as a universal benchmark. The available product documentation does not provide a broadly applicable “normal” transcription speed across tools.

What information should I record before changing settings?

Write down the complete setup for one reproducible test. This prevents changing several variables at once and makes an error message meaningful.

  1. Application and version: record the product name and installed version.
  2. Engine: note the selected local engine, such as Whisper CPP, Faster Whisper or another engine offered by the application.
  3. Model: capture the exact Whisper model name or size, not merely “Whisper.” Larger and smaller variants have different resource demands.
  4. Operating system: include Windows, macOS or Linux and, on macOS, whether the Mac uses Apple silicon or an Intel processor.
  5. Hardware: record the CPU model, GPU model and total available VRAM. Close other GPU-heavy applications before testing so the available amount is representative.
  6. Failure point: state whether the run is slow immediately, stalls while downloading or loading, or stops with an out-of-memory message after beginning.
  7. Test clip: use a short, representative section with the same language, background noise and speaker mix as the full project.

Keep the clip and settings unchanged while you test one variable at a time. This gives you a useful comparison without pretending that the result is a cross-tool benchmark.

How do I choose a smaller Whisper model without sacrificing too much accuracy?

Use a smaller model as the first controlled experiment. Subtitle Edit explains that larger Whisper models generally improve accuracy but consume more time and disk space; its documentation advises a smaller model for CUDA out-of-memory errors. Buzz also recommends lowering the Whisper model size when transcription is slow.

Run a short A/B test

  1. Keep the same application, engine, audio clip and language settings.
  2. Select the next smaller available Whisper model.
  3. Transcribe the representative clip.
  4. Compare proper names, numbers, punctuation, speaker changes and difficult accents against the larger-model output.
  5. If the smaller model is acceptable, process the project with it. If accuracy is inadequate, move up one size and investigate the backend before choosing the largest model.

A smaller model reduces demand but does not fix every bottleneck. If both model sizes run at nearly the same speed on a machine that should have GPU acceleration, verify the backend; the application may be using CPU for both tests. Conversely, if the smaller model succeeds while the larger one fails during loading, memory capacity is a plausible constraint.

Balance model quality against project needs

  • Clean, single-speaker audio: a smaller model may preserve enough accuracy for a first draft.
  • Multiple speakers, accents or noise: test the smaller model on those difficult sections rather than judging only an easy sentence.
  • Names and technical vocabulary: inspect the transcript manually; model size does not remove the need for subtitle editing.
  • Long projects: a model that fits reliably is more useful than a larger model that repeatedly fails or forces restarts.

How can I tell whether the GPU acceleration path is actually active?

Check the engine and backend settings instead of assuming that a detected GPU is being used. Backend support varies by application, operating system and engine. Subtitle Edit lists CPU and GPU options for different engines and recommends Whisper CPP with cuBLAS or Purfview Faster Whisper XXL for NVIDIA systems.

Subtitle Edit on Windows

  1. Open the speech-to-text interface.
  2. Check the backend dropdown and confirm that the intended Whisper engine is selected.
  3. For Whisper CPP, verify whether the installed build offers the desired GPU backend. Subtitle Edit documents cuBLAS and Vulkan options on Windows.
  4. Run the same short clip with the selected backend and watch the console output at the bottom of the speech-to-text interface.
  5. If the GPU-specific build is unavailable, let the application finish downloading the correct engine rather than repeatedly launching a missing executable.

cuBLAS and Vulkan are not interchangeable labels for every computer. Their availability depends on the engine build and platform. A Windows installation that exposes Vulkan may not expose cuBLAS, and an engine that works on an NVIDIA GPU is not automatically the best choice on another GPU vendor.

MacWhisper on Apple silicon

MacWhisper’s support article, updated 2025-05-16, says a previous crash can leave the app in a compatibility mode. In MacWhisper, open Settings → Advanced → WhisperKit and make sure Disable all GPU usage is turned off. If that option is enabled, the app is deliberately prevented from using GPU acceleration.

The same support guidance notes that Intel Macs can transcribe more slowly because they lack dedicated machine-learning hardware. That is a MacWhisper-specific vendor statement; it should not be generalized to every macOS transcription application.

Use operating-system monitoring as a supporting check

During a short run, observe whether GPU utilization and dedicated memory change when the GPU backend is selected. Treat monitoring as confirmation rather than a speed guarantee: a brief workload may not keep utilization high, and a process can use shared memory or a different device than the monitor you opened. The application’s own console or log output remains the authoritative place to identify the selected engine and any loading error.

How much CPU, GPU and VRAM does a local subtitle tool need?

Resource thresholds are tool-specific. The figures below come from product documentation and must not be treated as universal minimums.

Tool or guidance Documented hardware figure How to interpret it
Buzz FAQ A GPU with at least 6 GB of VRAM is suggested as an option to try Faster Whisper. This is Buzz’s guidance for trying that engine, not a minimum for every Buzz model or local subtitle application.
Nextcloud Local Whisper (stt_whisper2) current stable administration manual NVIDIA GPU with at least 4 GB VRAM and CUDA 12.2 or later; x86_64 CPU support. These requirements apply to that Nextcloud app and host configuration.
Nextcloud Local Whisper (stt_whisper2) current stable administration manual 10–20 CPU cores recommended; the app uses all cores by default. This is an app-specific recommendation. More cores do not guarantee proportional speed in another engine.

The apparent difference between 4 GB and 6 GB is not a contradiction. Nextcloud is documenting its own app, model and CUDA environment, while Buzz is suggesting a VRAM level at which users can try Faster Whisper. Model size, precision, audio length, engine implementation and other GPU workloads all change the amount of memory required.

System RAM and CPU still matter when a job runs on CPU or when an engine stages data between system memory and VRAM. If the application reports GPU memory exhaustion, first reduce model demand or select a supported backend. If CPU usage is high and GPU usage remains low, investigate backend selection before buying a faster processor.

What should I check when the app appears stuck downloading or loading?

Do not diagnose a transcription run as slow until the engine and model have finished installing. Subtitle Edit documents a console log, a tools log and a re-download action for downloadable engines. It also notes that antivirus software can quarantine an executable, leaving the application without a component it expects.

Read the live console output

In Subtitle Edit’s speech-to-text interface, the console log at the bottom shows real-time Whisper process output. Look for whether the process is downloading a model, loading a model, starting transcription or exiting with an error. A long pause during a first-use download is different from a process that has already reported an out-of-memory failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the tools log and installation state

  1. Open the application’s tools log and look for a failed download, missing file or launch error.
  2. Confirm that the selected engine and model are fully downloaded.
  3. If a component is missing, use the application’s documented re-download action.
  4. Review antivirus or endpoint-security quarantine history for a removed executable, then restore or allow it only according to your security policy.
  5. Restart the application after the component is installed and repeat the short test.

A first-use download can be large and may take time without consuming the same resources as transcription. Let it complete before changing models repeatedly. If a download fails, fixing the installation is more appropriate than reducing model size.

Which engine should I try when one local backend is slow?

Compare engines by supported platform, acceleration path, accuracy and resource use rather than by brand name alone. Subtitle Edit supports multiple speech-to-text engine categories, and its documentation says the available CPU/GPU paths differ by engine and operating system. Buzz specifically presents a lower model size or Whisper.cpp as alternatives for slow transcription.

Compare the backend capabilities

  • CPU-only path: works without a compatible GPU but may take longer, especially with larger models.
  • NVIDIA CUDA/cuBLAS path: can use NVIDIA GPU acceleration when the application supplies a compatible build and the required CUDA components.
  • Vulkan path: documented by Subtitle Edit for Whisper CPP on Windows; availability depends on the installed build and driver support.
  • Apple silicon path: may use Apple-specific machine-learning hardware when the application has not been forced into compatibility mode.
  • Online provider: moves audio processing to a remote service and may require an account or alter privacy expectations. Confirm those terms before selecting it.

Choose based on the actual constraint

If a CPU run is accurate but too slow, test a supported GPU engine or a smaller model. If the GPU engine fails with an out-of-memory message, try a smaller model or another backend that fits the available VRAM. If the engine cannot use your GPU on the current operating system, a CPU run may be the reliable fallback while you decide whether changing applications is worthwhile.

Do not switch engines and models simultaneously. Change the engine first with the same model and clip, record the result, then test model size. This isolates whether the backend or the model is responsible.

How do I fix a CUDA out-of-memory error?

A CUDA out-of-memory error means the selected CUDA process could not reserve enough GPU memory for the model and workload at that moment. It does not establish that the GPU is defective.

  1. Stop other applications that use the GPU, such as games, 3D tools or another AI process.
  2. Retry with a smaller Whisper model, following Subtitle Edit’s recommendation for this error.
  3. Confirm that the application is using the intended CUDA/cuBLAS build rather than an incompatible or partially installed component.
  4. Check the model’s loading stage in the console log. A failure before audio is processed points more strongly to model memory than to the media file.
  5. If the smaller model works, compare its accuracy on difficult passages before deciding whether the larger model is necessary.
  6. If every model fails, test a CPU backend or another supported engine to separate a CUDA installation problem from a general memory limit.

Do not infer a universal VRAM requirement from one failure. The 4 GB Nextcloud figure and 6 GB Buzz suggestion apply to those documented configurations, not to every Whisper implementation.

What if transcription is slow even though there is no error?

Measure the behavior from the same starting point and test in this order:

  1. Verify that the model is not still downloading or being unpacked.
  2. Check the selected engine and backend in the application interface.
  3. Run a smaller model on the same clip.
  4. Observe whether the GPU path is active and whether CPU usage is unexpectedly carrying the entire workload.
  5. Try a second supported backend, keeping the model and clip constant.
  6. Read the console and tools logs for warnings about fallback, missing files or failed process launches.

If a smaller model is faster, the original run was model-bound. If changing the backend produces the major improvement, the original path was execution-bound. If neither change helps, the clip, storage, thermal limits or an application-specific issue may require closer inspection; the reviewed documentation does not provide a universal speed target for distinguishing those cases.

When is a hardware upgrade justified?

Consider new hardware only after the software checks show that the chosen engine supports the device, the intended acceleration path is active and a smaller model cannot meet your accuracy requirement. A GPU upgrade is relevant when the documented engine requires more VRAM than is available or when a compatible GPU backend is absent. It is not a default fix for every slow subtitle job.

  • Evidence for a VRAM limit: a CUDA out-of-memory message while loading a model, success with a smaller model, and a supported GPU backend.
  • Evidence for a backend problem: very low GPU activity, CPU-bound processing despite a compatible GPU, or logs showing a fallback or missing acceleration component.
  • Evidence for an installation problem: missing executable, quarantine event, failed download or a process that never reaches model loading.

If you do compare GPUs, use the engine’s documented requirement for the exact application and model. A card described as having at least 6 GB VRAM matches Buzz’s Faster Whisper suggestion, while Nextcloud’s own app documentation specifies at least 4 GB VRAM with CUDA 12.2 or later. Neither figure guarantees a particular transcription speed.

How do local and online transcription choices affect troubleshooting?

Local processing keeps the audio on the computer but makes you responsible for model downloads, drivers, CPU/GPU capacity and application updates. Online providers can avoid local hardware limits, yet they change where the audio is processed and may introduce account, network or privacy requirements.

Subtitle Edit documents both local engines and online provider categories. Treat an online option as a separate decision, not as a hidden performance setting: confirm what service receives the audio, how long it retains files, whether an account is required and whether the workflow is acceptable for confidential material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the most reliable troubleshooting sequence?

Use this checklist for each affected project:

  1. Record the app version, engine, model, operating system, CPU, GPU, VRAM and failure stage.
  2. Run a short representative clip and save the console or error output.
  3. Confirm that the model and engine finished downloading and were not quarantined.
  4. Verify the backend: Whisper CPP cuBLAS or Vulkan where supported, the recommended NVIDIA path in Subtitle Edit, or the WhisperKit GPU setting in MacWhisper.
  5. Test the next smaller model and compare difficult passages for accuracy.
  6. Try another supported backend while keeping the model and clip unchanged.
  7. Check the tool-specific hardware guidance instead of applying a universal VRAM number.
  8. Only then decide whether a different application, an online provider or hardware with more compatible VRAM is warranted.

This order fixes low-cost configuration and model issues before you spend money or accept a lower-quality transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a long audio file alone cause a local Whisper crash?

Length can increase total work, but the documented guidance does not establish a universal duration limit. Reproduce the problem with a short clip first; if the short clip works, divide the project into smaller jobs while you investigate the full-file behavior.

Should I reinstall my graphics driver when transcription is slow?

Not as the first step. Check the selected engine, backend, model installation and application logs first; reinstalling a driver will not restore an executable quarantined by antivirus or make an unsupported engine use your GPU.

Does using all CPU cores always make subtitle generation faster?

No. Nextcloud Local Whisper says its app uses all cores by default and recommends 10–20 cores, but that guidance is specific to that app. Other engines may scale differently, and storage, model size or GPU availability can remain the limiting factor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a CPU-only transcription workflow still practical?

It can be a dependable fallback when no compatible GPU backend is available or GPU memory is insufficient. Expect larger models to take longer, and choose a model that completes reliably while meeting the accuracy you need.
