If ChatGPT shows an ad that does not fit your question or keeps repeating, use the ad’s three-dot menu first: About this ad explains the selection, Hide ad removes that placement, and Report this ad sends misleading, unsafe, inappropriate, or policy-violating ads for review. For broader control, open Settings → Ads controls and turn off Personalize ads, or clear advertising data. Those settings reduce the signals used for targeting but do not necessarily remove ads. Temporary Chat has no ads, and ad-free plans or an Ads-Free option may be available depending on your region and account.
This guide explains why an ad can seem irrelevant, why the same creative can recur, what each control actually changes, and what to do when a control is missing.

Why am I seeing an ad that seems irrelevant?
ChatGPT ads are selected from more than an exact keyword match. OpenAI says selection can consider the current conversation’s context and intent, information in an advertiser’s landing page and creative, and context hints supplied by the advertiser. If personalized ads are enabled, broader ChatGPT signals can also be used, including past chats, memory, and interactions with ads.
That means an ad can be related to the general purpose of a conversation rather than to a word you typed. A question about planning a trip, for example, may be interpreted through its broader intent instead of matching one destination name. The selection system can also use information from the ad itself, so the connection may be obvious only after you inspect the explanation.

Where ads appear and who may see them
In the current rollout, ads may appear below responses for eligible Free and Go users. The United States test began on February 9, 2026, and availability is expanding over time, so the exact experience depends on your country, account eligibility, and the rollout stage. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts do not have ads.
OpenAI describes ChatGPT as being used by “hundreds of millions” of people for learning, work, and everyday decisions. That qualitative statement does not provide a more precise user count, and it should not be read as a promise that every account or region has the same advertising experience.

Turning off personalized ads removes broader-chat, memory, and ads-history signals from ad selection. It does not remove the current conversation’s context, so an ad can still be matched to the thread you are viewing. This is why a supposedly unrelated ad may continue to appear immediately after you change the setting.
How do I see why a particular ad was selected?
Inspect the ad before hiding or reporting it. The explanation can distinguish a match based on the active conversation from one based on optional broader signals.
- Locate the ad below the ChatGPT response.
- Open the ad’s three-dot menu.
- Select About this ad, or the equivalent explanation control shown in your interface.
- Read the reason provided, noting whether it refers to conversation context, intent, or personalized signals.
The explanation is useful for deciding which control to use. If the ad is merely a poor fit, hiding it is normally the quickest remedy. If the content is deceptive, unsafe, inappropriate, or violates policy, use the reporting flow instead.
How do I stop ChatGPT from showing the same ad?
Use Hide ad from the ad’s menu. Hiding removes that ad from your view and sends feedback to the ads system, but it applies to that ad placement rather than changing every future selection.
- Open the repeated ad’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Hide ad.
- Confirm if ChatGPT asks you to confirm the action.
If a different ad appears afterward, that is expected: hiding one placement does not turn off advertising or block every ad from the same campaign. Similar ads may still be selected because they can have different creatives, landing-page information, or targeting signals. Repeat the action for another unwanted placement, or use Ads controls if your goal is to reduce personalization across chats.

When hiding is the right choice
- The ad is legitimate but irrelevant to your needs.
- The same creative is appearing often enough to disrupt your session.
- You want to provide a quick relevance signal without making a policy complaint.
Use reporting instead when the problem is the ad’s conduct or content, not simply its relevance.
How do I report a misleading, unsafe, or inappropriate ad?
The report control is the escalation route for an ad that may be deceptive, dangerous, offensive, or otherwise policy-violating. Reporting also hides the ad and sends it for review.
- Open the ad’s three-dot menu.
- Select Report this ad.
- Choose the reason that best describes the problem.
- Add details if the form offers an optional field. Describe the specific claim, image, offer, or behavior that concerns you.
- Submit the report.
Before submitting, preserve the ad title and, when practical, a screenshot or the destination landing-page address. Note the approximate time and the reason you selected. Those details can help if you need to explain what you saw later, although OpenAI does not publish a guaranteed response time for reports.

Hide versus report

How do I turn off personalized ads?
Disable the personalization switch in Ads controls. This prevents broader chat history, memory, and ads-history signals from being used for ad selection, but it does not itself remove ads from the current thread.
- Open ChatGPT Settings.
- Choose Ads controls.
- Turn off Personalize ads.
- Return to the conversation and start a new thread if you want to compare how the experience changes without the broader signals.
The last step is optional, but a new thread makes the distinction easier to observe because the current thread can still provide contextual signals. Do not interpret a remaining ad as proof that the switch failed; contextual ads may continue when personalization is off.
What this setting does not change
- It does not guarantee an ad-free account.
- It does not erase your chats or memories.
- It does not remove the active conversation’s context from selection.
- It does not prevent every ad from appearing if your account and region are in an ad-supported rollout.
How do I clear the data used for ads?
Ads controls include an option to clear data used for advertising. Clearing is a data reset, not an immediate ad blocker: OpenAI says deleted ads data may remain on its servers for up to 30 days before removal.
- Open Settings → Ads controls.
- Choose the control to clear ads data.
- Confirm the deletion request.
- Allow up to 30 days for the deleted advertising data to be removed from OpenAI’s servers.
Clearing ads data does not delete your conversations. It also does not guarantee that no ad will appear during the retention window or that a new ad cannot be selected from the current conversation’s context.

Can I use ChatGPT without ads?
Yes, but the available route depends on your account and region. Temporary Chat does not show ads. In some locations, eligible Free users can choose an Ads-Free option with lower message limits and reduced feature access, while Plus and Pro are paid ad-free plans.

Using Temporary Chat for a clean session
Choose Temporary Chat when you need a conversation without ads and do not need the full set of persistent-chat features. This is a session-level solution, so it does not change the advertising settings for your regular conversations.
Choosing an Ads-Free Free option
If ChatGPT presents an Ads-Free choice to your Free account, read the on-screen limits before selecting it. The option is not universal, and the reduced message limits or feature access may matter more than the ads themselves for long or tool-heavy sessions.
Using a paid ad-free plan
Plus and Pro accounts do not have ads. Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts are also listed as ad-free. Availability, pricing, and eligibility can change, so check the plan information displayed in your account rather than assuming the same choices are offered in every country.

What should I do if the controls are missing?
Ads controls, the Ads-Free option, and regional testing can change. A missing menu may mean your account is outside the current test, your app or browser has not received the interface update, or the feature is not available in your region.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that displayed the ad.
- Look under the main ChatGPT Settings menu for Ads controls, not only the conversation menu.
- Update the ChatGPT app or refresh the web interface, then sign in again.
- Check whether you are using a work, school, or organization-managed account, where administrators may control available settings.
- If the ad menu lacks Hide ad or Report this ad, capture the ad and its approximate time and use the support route available in your account.
Do not assume that a missing control means the ad is permanent. Rollouts are staged, and labels can differ between interfaces while the underlying function remains the same.
Why does an ad repeat even after I changed settings?
Repetition can come from several separate mechanisms, so use the remedy that matches the symptom.

The exact same creative repeats
Hide that ad from its three-dot menu. If it returns, verify that you hid the same placement rather than only closing the menu or leaving the conversation. A hidden ad is not a universal block on every related campaign.
Different ads from the same category appear
Turn off Personalize ads to remove broader-chat, memory, and ads-history signals. Current-thread context can still be used, so start a fresh conversation or use Temporary Chat when you need to avoid contextual advertising for that session.
The ad is offensive or makes a dubious claim
Report it instead of relying only on Hide ad. Select the most accurate reason and include a concise description of the problematic claim or content.
The ad appears after clearing ads data
Clearing data can take up to 30 days to complete and does not remove the active conversation’s context. Continue using the per-ad controls while the deletion request is processed.

No. OpenAI states: “Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.” Ads are separate from answer generation, so an ad appearing below a response is a paid placement rather than part of the model’s recommendation or reasoning.
Advertisers do not receive your conversations, chat history, memories, name, email address, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information. OpenAI says advertisers receive aggregated reporting, such as views and clicks, rather than the personal conversation data listed above.
An ad’s presence also does not mean OpenAI endorses the advertiser. Treat the ad as a separate commercial message and evaluate any offer using the destination page, terms, and your own judgment.

How should I troubleshoot an ad in the right order?
Use this sequence so you do not take a broad privacy step when a one-click dismissal would solve the problem.
- Inspect: open the three-dot menu and choose About this ad to see whether context, intent, or personalized signals were involved.
- Dismiss: choose Hide ad if the ad is merely repetitive or irrelevant.
- Escalate: choose Report this ad if it is misleading, unsafe, inappropriate, or policy-violating.
- Reduce personalization: go to Settings → Ads controls and turn off Personalize ads if you do not want broader-chat, memory, or ads-history signals used.
- Clear advertising data: submit the clear-data request, remembering that removal can take up to 30 days and does not delete chats.
- Change the session or plan: use Temporary Chat, select an Ads-Free option if it is offered, or use an ad-free paid plan.
This order preserves the distinction between relevance feedback, safety reporting, personalization control, and complete ad removal. Each action solves a different part of the problem.

Save the ad title, a screenshot or landing-page address, the approximate time it appeared, and the report reason you selected. If the ad changes after you click it, record both the visible creative and the destination page so the review team can identify the placement.
There is no published guaranteed response time, and hiding or reporting one ad does not promise that similar ads will never appear again. Keeping those details gives you a clear record if you need to submit another report or explain why the content was problematic.
