A soft, tacky or partly missing resin print is usually receiving too little correctly timed light for its resin, layer height and printer. Start by identifying the failure pattern, record a controlled baseline, then run the printer manufacturer’s exposure finder on the actual machine. Correct temperature and clean, well-mixed resin before making small exposure changes. If a calibrated test fails across its entire area, investigate the UV source, LCD or exposure screen rather than changing supports. Post-curing can strengthen a properly formed green part, but it cannot recreate layers that never solidified.

The workflow below separates model-specific problems from resin, temperature and hardware faults so you can change one variable at a time and reach a repeatable setting.

What does incomplete curing mean in resin 3D printing?

Incomplete curing means the polymer did not receive enough effective light dose to form a stable layer. Dose depends on exposure time, the printer’s real optical output, resin formulation and color, layer height, temperature and the condition of the liquid in the vat. A nominal setting copied from another machine can therefore under-cure even when the number looks reasonable.

Anycubic describes the visible result directly: insufficient exposure can produce soft surfaces, missing details and noticeable layer lines. Underexposure may leave a layer weak or absent; overexposure creates the opposite problem by expanding features, closing holes and blurring edges. The useful target is complete layer formation with the smallest dose that preserves the intended dimensions.

How can I tell which curing failure I have?

Match the symptom to the broadest affected area before changing settings. A failure across the whole print points to exposure, temperature, resin or hardware; a failure confined to a region often involves supports, orientation or local screen output.

Symptom Most useful first checks What the result suggests
Entire model is soft or tacky Normal exposure, resin temperature, resin profile and resin age The complete stack is under-dosed or the resin is not reacting normally.
Fine details, holes or thin walls are missing Run an exposure finder and inspect edge sharpness, holes and thin posts Underexposure is likely; if features merge or grow, the dose is excessive instead.
Only supports or a base form, while the model is absent Support geometry, bottom exposure, normal exposure and the manufacturer’s calibration file Adhesion may be adequate but later layers are underexposed, or the model is not connected correctly to its supports.
Nothing solidifies anywhere Preset, resin separation or contamination, UV output, LCD/display test and exposure pattern A global profile, resin or hardware fault is more probable than support placement.
Rough surfaces or isolated hard specks Filter the vat and inspect for cured debris or IPA contamination Particles or solvent are interfering with otherwise usable resin.

How do I establish a controlled baseline?

Write down the conditions before troubleshooting. This prevents a temperature change, a new resin and a different layer height from hiding the real cause.

  1. Identify the hardware. Record the exact printer model, firmware version and whether it uses an LCD masking screen or a laser-based exposure system. Formlabs, for example, documents 405 nm laser exposure on its SLA printers; that wavelength is an example, not a universal setting for every machine.
  2. Identify the material. Note resin maker, product type, color, batch or approximate age, storage history and whether it has been used through previous failed jobs.
  3. Record slicer values. Capture layer height, normal exposure, bottom exposure, bottom-layer count, lift settings and the selected printer/resin profile. The curing diagnosis depends primarily on the exposure values, but the other entries help you reproduce the job.
  4. Measure the liquid at the vat. Record resin temperature, not just room temperature. The resin can be colder than the surrounding air after storage or warmer near a heater.
  5. Prepare clean material. Mix the resin according to its instructions, remove visible cured flakes and keep wash solvent such as IPA out of the vat. Do not pour filtered and unfiltered material together without noting the change.
  6. Choose one test model. Use the printer maker’s exposure finder or calibration file rather than a complex miniature. Keep orientation and layer height fixed while diagnosing curing.
  7. Change one variable per run. Save each result with the date and settings. A single controlled change shows whether the result moved in the expected direction.

How do I calibrate normal exposure correctly?

Use an exposure test designed for your printer, not a universal time copied from a forum. Anycubic calls its built-in method R_E_R_F; other manufacturers provide equivalent exposure finders. These tests expose several tiles or patterns at different times so you can compare the actual optical dose delivered by your machine.

  1. Load the correct file. Select the calibration file intended for your printer and confirm that the resin profile and layer height match the material you are using.
  2. Run the test at a stable temperature. Let the resin reach the range specified by its maker before starting. Record the measured vat temperature with the run.
  3. Inspect formation, not just appearance. Check whether small holes remain open, thin posts are complete, edges are sharp and the surface is free of a soft film. Also check the printed dimensions against the test’s reference marks when those marks are provided.
  4. Increase dose in small steps if the pattern is incomplete. Raise normal exposure gradually and repeat the test. For a partial-support failure, Phrozen suggests a 10% normal-exposure increase as a starting adjustment; treat that as a diagnostic step for the affected setup, not a universal value.
  5. Back off when details merge. If holes close, text fills in, posts fuse or dimensions grow, reduce normal exposure until those defects disappear while the thinnest required features remain solid.
  6. Save the resulting profile. Name it with the printer, resin, color, layer height and temperature. Re-run calibration after changing any of those conditions, after a significant firmware or light-source change, or when the resin has aged.

Bottom exposure is calibrated separately because it controls adhesion to the build plate. Increasing it cannot compensate for normal layers that remain soft, and excessive bottom exposure can make removal difficult or distort the first layers.

How does resin temperature change curing?

Temperature changes both viscosity and chemical reactivity, so a time that works in a warm workshop may fail in a cold room. Phrozen reports that most resins perform best above 24°C, begin to fail below about 20°C, and commonly target 24–30°C; the exact range printed by your resin maker takes priority.

Measure at the vat

Use a thermometer at the resin container or vat rather than relying on a thermostat across the room. A printer enclosure, a cold bottle poured immediately before printing and a draft near the machine can all produce a different liquid temperature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Warm gradually and safely

Bring the resin into its stated operating range with a controlled printer heater or a warmed enclosure designed for resin printing. Avoid heating an open container with an uncontrolled high-temperature source. Once the temperature changes, repeat the exposure finder because lower viscosity and faster reaction can alter the dose needed for the same layer.

Control the entire job

Keep the temperature steady from the first bottom layer through the final layer. If a print starts warm and cools substantially, later layers can become weaker even though the slicer time never changes.

How do resin age, separation and contamination cause soft prints?

Resin must remain a uniform, reactive liquid. Pigments and additives can settle during storage, old material can degrade, and cured fragments or IPA can interfere with solidification.

  • Mix before printing. Follow the product’s mixing instructions so pigment and photoinitiator are distributed. Record when the material was mixed if the job is long.
  • Filter visible particles. Drain the vat through a resin-safe filter whenever you see cured flakes or fragments. A particle trapped between the film and screen can create a local defect or puncture risk.
  • Keep wash solvent out. Even a small amount of IPA contamination can make a region remain soft or produce a rough surface. Do not return solvent-wet tools or uncured drips to the vat.
  • Replace degraded material. Resin that has visibly separated and will not return to a uniform mixture, was stored poorly or has been used through many failed prints is a poor calibration standard. Start a new, properly stored batch before concluding that the printer is faulty.
  • Match the exact profile. A profile for a different formulation or pigment load may underexpose the current resin. Confirm the slicer’s resin and printer selections rather than assuming two products with similar names behave identically.

Why are only the supports printing?

When supports and a base form appear but the model does not, first separate adhesion from layer formation. The bottom layers may be bonding correctly while normal exposure, support connections or the model’s geometry fails higher up.

Check the sliced file

Open the layer preview and verify that the model appears above the support tips. Look for islands with no support connection, extremely thin walls and a raft that does not reach the intended contact points. Correct those geometry issues before changing exposure.

Check both exposure stages

Bottom exposure and bottom-layer count affect the plate bond; normal exposure controls the rest of the object. If the supports are firm but their attached model sections are soft, calibrate normal exposure with the manufacturer’s test rather than adding more bottom exposure.

Apply a measured adjustment

After confirming temperature and clean resin, increase normal exposure in a small step and print the calibration file or a short test. Phrozen’s 10% suggestion is a reasonable first diagnostic increment for a partial-support failure, but the correct value depends on the machine and resin. If edges become swollen or details close, reverse the change.

Use a reference file

Print the manufacturer’s calibration model with the same resin. If it succeeds while the original job fails, revisit support placement, orientation and sliced islands. If it fails in the same way, continue with the global exposure and hardware checks.

  1. Confirm the active preset. Make sure the job is using the intended printer profile, a nonzero normal exposure and the correct file format. A mislabeled profile can send a valid-looking job with unsuitable values.
  2. Inspect the resin. Look for separation, an unusual film, cured debris or solvent contamination. Filter or replace the material before testing electronics.
  3. Run the built-in exposure-screen test. Use the printer’s maintenance menu to project its test pattern without resin. Compare the illuminated shape with the file preview.
  4. Look for missing or dim regions. A failed UV LED or laser output, a damaged LCD, a clouded release film or a display fault can leave an entire area under-dosed. Do not stare into an active UV source; follow the manufacturer’s safety procedure.
  5. Repeat with a known calibration file. If the same region remains blank across different files, the optical path or display is implicated rather than the model.
  6. Contact the manufacturer with evidence. Provide photos of the failed test and screen pattern, printer and firmware versions, resin information, temperature, exposure parameters and calibration results. Those details let support distinguish a profile error from a component failure.

Can post-curing fix a print that was underexposed?

No. Post-curing strengthens a correctly formed green part; it cannot create layers or details that never cured during printing.

After a successful print, wash and dry it according to the resin instructions, then use the specified wavelength, time and heat for post-curing. Formlabs explains that additional light and heat increase polymer bonding, improving strength, stiffness and temperature resistance. Over-curing a tacky, incomplete part may harden its surface while leaving missing geometry and weak internal sections, so correct the print settings first.

How should I compare two exposure settings?

Compare settings against the same acceptance criteria, not by time alone. The better setting forms every required layer while retaining dimensions and fine detail.

Comparison axis What to observe Decision rule
Exposure dose Surface tack, layer continuity and the thinnest required features Increase from a soft or incomplete result; decrease when features merge or expand.
Resin formulation and color Hole openness, edge sharpness and consistency across the test tiles Calibrate each formulation or color instead of transferring a profile by name alone.
Layer height Whether the chosen time forms a complete layer at the new thickness Re-run the finder after changing layer height.
Real light power Uniformity of the exposed pattern across the screen or build area Investigate the optical system when a whole test or a fixed region fails.
Bottom-layer adhesion Raft and first-layer bond without excessive elephant-foot distortion Adjust bottom exposure separately from normal exposure.
Detail retention Small holes, posts, text and edge profiles Choose the lowest dose that still produces complete geometry.

What maintenance prevents incomplete curing?

Most recurring failures become easier to prevent when the printer, resin and records are treated as one process.

  • Store resin as directed and note the approximate age of an opened bottle.
  • Mix separated material before every job and keep the vat free of cured fragments.
  • Filter after a failed print that leaves debris instead of immediately starting another job.
  • Keep IPA and other wash liquids away from the vat and resin tools.
  • Measure vat temperature during seasonal changes and allow the printer to stabilize before calibration.
  • Keep a separate profile for each printer, resin formulation, color and layer height.
  • Save photos of successful calibration results so a later failure can be compared with a known-good pattern.
  • Inspect the release film and exposure screen when defects appear in the same location on unrelated files.
  • Recalibrate after changing resin, layer height, temperature, firmware or the light source.

What is the fastest decision path for a soft or tacky print?

Use this sequence to avoid replacing parts before proving that the basic process is sound.

  2. Record printer, resin, color, layer height, normal and bottom exposure, temperature and resin age.
  3. Mix clean resin, remove debris and exclude IPA contamination.
  4. Bring the vat into the resin maker’s temperature range and hold it there.

  8. Wash, dry and post-cure only after the printed geometry is complete.

This order isolates the variables that most often reduce delivered light dose while preserving a clear path to hardware support when calibration cannot produce any solidified pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rescue a print that is already soft after washing?

First let it drain and dry fully, then inspect whether every intended layer and support connection exists. If geometry is missing, reprinting with a corrected exposure is the reliable remedy; additional curing can harden existing material but cannot rebuild absent layers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a separate exposure profile for every resin color?

Treat color as a new calibration condition because pigments can change how much light reaches the reactive material. Keep the same printer and layer height, run the exposure finder again, and save the result under a color-specific profile.

Why does a setting copied from another printer fail on mine?

Two printers can report the same exposure time while delivering different real light power or having different optical paths. Use the receiving printer’s calibration file and judge the printed features rather than transferring the number unchanged.

Is warming resin enough to solve every under-cured print?

No. Warming addresses viscosity and reaction rate only when the resin is otherwise clean, correctly profiled and exposed. A global calibration failure at the proper temperature still warrants an exposure-screen and UV-output check.
