When browser automation stops working after a Claude update, first identify which stack is failing: Claude in Chrome, its connection to Claude Code or Claude Desktop, or an application that uses Anthropic’s browser-use API tool. These paths have different repair steps. Restarting the wrong component can waste time, and an update may be coincidental if a website, CAPTCHA, page structure, or your tool executor changed instead.
Use the sequence below: record the exact symptom and versions, refresh the relevant connection, verify the API tool protocol if you run your own integration, inspect page and browser diagnostics, test on a safe simple site, and prepare a redacted reproduction if support is needed.

“Claude browser automation” describes at least two separate systems. Claude in Chrome is an extension that lets Claude interact with websites and can connect to Claude Code or Claude Desktop. An API browser-use integration is different: Claude returns tool-use requests, while your application executes them in its own browser automation and sends the results back.
| Question | Claude in Chrome and connected apps | API browser-use integration |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the browser action run? | Through the Chrome extension and, when connected, Claude Code or Claude Desktop. | In the browser automation controlled by your application or service. |
| What normally needs restarting or updating? | The extension, the desktop app, or Claude Code, depending on which connection is inactive. | Your configured toolset, protocol handling, browser library, and executor process. |
| What evidence is available? | Extension connection state and the connected app’s status. | Ordered tool-use and tool-result logs, page structure or accessibility data, screenshots, and—when supported—console and network logs. |
| Who performs each browser action? | The Claude product connected through the extension. | Your client application must execute every returned call. |
If you cannot name the failing stack, stop and reproduce the problem once while noting which Claude product displayed the error. Do not assume that the most recent update caused the failure until you isolate the component.

What should I record before changing anything?
A short incident record prevents a “fix” from hiding the original fault. Capture the first failure, not just the last retry.
- Integration: Claude in Chrome alone, Claude in Chrome connected to Claude Code, Claude in Chrome connected to Claude Desktop, or an API browser-use integration.
- Symptom: extension disconnected, toggle unavailable, browser action never starts, action targets the wrong element, tool call times out, or the page loads but the workflow stops.
- Exact error: copy the complete message and any error code. Preserve capitalization and punctuation.
- Timeline: when it last worked, when it failed, and whether the failure occurs on every site or only one page.
- Versions: Claude app, Claude Code, Chrome, Claude extension, browser-automation library, and your executor or integration build.
- Reproduction: the smallest sequence that fails, including the starting URL or a description of the page, with private values removed.
This information also distinguishes an update regression from a page-side change. A workflow that fails only on one site is less likely to be a general Claude connection problem than one that fails on every page.

For a Claude in Chrome connection failure, refresh the extension and the app at the end of the connection that is inactive. Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting or updating the relevant endpoint rather than repeatedly retrying a browser action.
When Claude in Chrome will not connect to Claude Code
- Save any work in progress and close the automation task.
- Open Chrome’s extension manager (use the browser’s Extensions menu and choose Manage extensions, or open
chrome://extensions). - Confirm that the Claude in Chrome extension is enabled. If Chrome shows an available update, apply it, then restart Chrome.
- Restart or update Claude Code. Start a new connection from the extension after both sides are running current versions.
- Run a harmless test on a simple page before returning to the original workflow.
If the extension connects after the restart but fails again on one particular website, treat that as a page or permission problem and continue with the diagnostics sections below.
When the Claude in Chrome toggle is inactive in Claude Desktop
- Quit Claude Desktop completely rather than merely closing its window.
- Reopen the app and check whether the Claude in Chrome toggle is active.
- If the toggle remains unavailable, update Claude Desktop and the extension, then restart Chrome and the app again.
- Test the connection with a non-sensitive, low-impact page.
An inactive toggle points to the desktop-app or extension connection path; it does not by itself prove that website automation is broken.
When the Claude in Chrome connection fails after Claude Code starts
Restart or update Claude Code, then reconnect from the extension. If the extension and app both report current versions but the connection still fails, record the exact state of each endpoint and move to a minimal reproduction instead of repeatedly refreshing the page.

How do I troubleshoot an API browser-use integration?
In an API integration, Claude does not directly operate your browser process. It emits a tool_use block describing an action; your application must execute that action and return a matching tool_result. A client that drops, reorders, or mislabels those messages can look as if Claude’s update broke browser automation.
Verify the request-and-result loop
- Log each response block with secrets and private page data redacted.
- For every returned
tool_useblock, invoke the corresponding browser operation in your executor. - Send one matching
tool_resultfor each call, preserving the call identifier and the order in which calls were returned. - Return a clear success result or a structured error result; do not silently omit a failed action.
- Continue only after the model receives the result for the preceding call.
Anthropic’s browser-use documentation specifically requires processing returned tool-use blocks and sending matching results in order. A mismatch in member names, call identifiers, or sequencing can produce timeouts, repeated actions, or a conversation that appears stuck even though the browser itself is healthy.
Check the configured toolset and executor
Compare the toolset and member names configured in your current request with the implementation your executor actually exposes. An update may leave your client sending an older name or schema while the executor expects a newer one. Verify that the browser library, its launch configuration, and the code that dispatches each member all refer to the same definitions.
Confirm that the executor process is still running, can launch or attach to its browser, and has permission to reach the test page. If the browser opens but no action occurs, inspect the dispatch log to determine whether the call reached the executor or failed before launch.
Separate model output from executor failure
Record three timestamps for a failing action: when the API response arrived, when the executor received the call, and when the browser returned a result. This identifies whether the delay is in the API conversation, your dispatch layer, or the page interaction. A missing third timestamp means the browser operation did not complete; a missing second timestamp means your client did not dispatch the call.
How can page structure, screenshots, and logs reveal the fault?
Use the browser evidence your integration supports. Browser-use workflows can work from page structure or accessibility information and can also use screenshots. Console and network diagnostics are valuable when available, but they only include events observed after the automation attached.

Inspect the page representation
Compare what the automation sees with what a person sees. If the expected button or field is absent from the page structure, the page may still be loading, the element may be inside a frame, or the interface may be rendered in a way that does not expose stable references. A screenshot can show whether the visual control exists while the structural representation does not.
Check console errors
Look for JavaScript exceptions, blocked scripts, and errors that occur immediately before the failed action. Treat an empty console as “no errors captured,” not as proof that no earlier error occurred; logs begin only after the automation attaches.
Check network requests
Inspect requests that fail, hang, or return unexpected status codes. A blocked authentication request, failed API call, or stalled script can leave a page looking loaded while its controls remain unusable. Again, the absence of entries does not rule out a failure that happened before attachment.
Use screenshots as a time series
Capture a screenshot before the action, immediately after it, and after any wait period. Differences can show a consent dialog, login expiry, loading overlay, or navigation that your selector logic did not anticipate. Remove personal information before storing or sharing those images.
Why do dynamic pages and CAPTCHAs break otherwise working automation?
A healthy Claude connection can still fail on a page whose interface changes faster than the automation can identify it. Highly dynamic pages, virtualized lists, and canvas-rendered controls may not expose stable element references. In those cases, the tool may need screenshot-based or coordinate interaction, which is more sensitive to layout changes.
Highly dynamic or virtualized interfaces
Virtualized lists create only the rows near the viewport, so an item that appears in a human’s scrollable list may not exist in the current page structure. Dynamic frameworks can also replace a node after it was identified, invalidating a previously captured reference. Re-read the page representation after navigation, scrolling, or a major state change rather than reusing an old reference indefinitely.

Canvas-rendered controls
A canvas can display a complete interface while exposing little semantic structure to automation. If the page supports keyboard access or an alternate text-based control, use that path. Otherwise, screenshot and coordinate actions may be necessary, but verify the target visually before every consequential click.
CAPTCHA and anti-automation checks
A CAPTCHA can block a workflow even when every Claude and browser component is operating normally. Anthropic’s quickstart README documents CAPTCHA failures in its Playwright Google search example. Do not attempt to bypass a site’s challenge; stop, follow the site’s allowed verification process, or use an approved non-automated route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I test after making a change?
Use a controlled test that cannot alter important data. Claude in Chrome can interact directly with websites, so a careless test can submit forms, change settings, or expose account information.
- Create or choose a separate browser profile without sensitive accounts, saved payment details, or private documents.
- Use a simple page and a reversible task, such as reading visible text or navigating between harmless pages.
- Run one action at a time and inspect the proposed action before allowing it.
- Compare the result with the screenshot or page structure returned by the automation.
- Only after the simple test passes, reproduce the original workflow with non-sensitive data.
A separate profile also prevents an unrelated extension, cached session, or account prompt from obscuring the diagnosis.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should I do when the problem is limited to one website?
When a simple test succeeds but one site fails, investigate the site before changing your Claude setup again.
- Check whether the site added a login prompt, consent dialog, CAPTCHA, or second-factor challenge.
- Reload the page and obtain a fresh page representation after each navigation.
- Check for a frame, virtualized list, canvas control, or rapidly changing content.
- Compare a screenshot with the structural or accessibility data available to the automation.
- Try the same flow in the site’s permitted manual interface if automation is blocked.
If the site changed its interface, update your selectors or interaction plan in the executor. If it intentionally blocks automation, do not treat that policy as a Claude defect.

How do I prepare a useful support report?
Escalate when the connection or executor still fails after a clean restart, current versions, and a minimal safe reproduction. Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance directs users to report issues through feedback or contact support for technical or account problems.
Include these details
- The integration type and whether the browser action runs through Claude in Chrome or your own API executor.
- Claude app, Claude Code, extension, Chrome, browser-library, and executor versions.
- The exact error, first-failure time, and whether the page loaded.
- A minimal, repeatable sequence that fails on a safe page or with redacted data.
- Relevant tool-use and tool-result records, including evidence of ordering and matching identifiers.
- Redacted console and network evidence, plus screenshots when they explain the state.
Remove secrets before sharing
Delete API keys, session cookies, authorization headers, account identifiers, credentials, private URLs, personal data, and page text that identifies another person. Replace them with short descriptions, but keep the event order and error wording intact. Never upload a full browser profile or unredacted network archive.

How can I tell whether a Claude update is actually responsible?
An update is a credible suspect only after you show that the same safe reproduction fails across the relevant current components and that the page itself has not changed. Compare the first failing version with the last known working versions, test the connection and executor independently, and check whether the failure is universal or site-specific.
If Claude in Chrome cannot connect to either connected app, focus on the extension and app endpoints. If the connection works but an API workflow stalls, focus on tool-use/result handling and executor dispatch. If only one dynamic site fails, focus on page structure, CAPTCHA, scripts, or network requests. This isolation produces a useful bug report and avoids attributing every browser change to Claude.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I roll back Claude or the extension to fix browser automation?
A rollback is not the first step established by the available troubleshooting guidance. Record versions and reproduce the failure safely; then use the supported restart, update, and reporting paths so a suspected regression can be investigated without leaving an outdated component in regular use.
Why does my API browser-use workflow repeat the same action?
Repeated actions often indicate that the client did not return the matching tool_result, returned the wrong call identifier, or processed calls out of order. Inspect the dispatch log and verify one result is sent for every tool_use block before the next action is requested.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does automation work in a new browser profile but not my normal profile?
The normal profile may contain an interfering extension, an expired login, a consent screen, or cached site state. Keep the clean profile for diagnosis, then add accounts or extensions back one at a time so the conflicting state can be identified without exposing sensitive data.
Is an empty network log proof that the page made no requests?
No. Browser diagnostics only cover entries collected after the automation attached, so an earlier failed request may be missing. Attach diagnostics before reproducing the failure and correlate the log with screenshots and the page’s visible state.
