Most Windows 11 audio failures can be isolated without reinstalling Windows. Start with the automated Audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app, then verify the selected output, physical connections, volume, audio enhancements, device enablement, Windows updates, and the driver. The order matters: output-routing and mute errors are quick to reverse, while driver removal is a later escalation.

This guide covers silent speakers or headphones, “No audio output device is installed,” crackling, audio that fails in one app, problems that began after Windows Update, and microphone access. Use the branch matching your symptom, and restart when instructed so Windows can reload services or drivers.

What should I check first when Windows 11 has no sound?

Follow Microsoft’s current Windows 11 sequence: run Get Help’s automated Audio troubleshooter, choose the intended output, check hardware and volume, disable enhancements, confirm the device is enabled and default, install updates, and then repair the driver. Stop as soon as sound returns; later steps change more of the system than earlier ones.

  1. Run the automated diagnostic. Open the Get Help app and start its Audio troubleshooter. It performs diagnostic checks and may apply fixes automatically. This is Microsoft’s first-line path for Windows 11 audio problems.
  2. Select the output you actually want. Select the speaker icon on the taskbar, open the output-device list, and choose the connected speakers or headphones. You can also open Settings > System > Sound and select the device under Output. Windows can route sound to a monitor over HDMI, a USB device, a Bluetooth endpoint, or another connected output instead of the device you are listening to.
  3. Check the physical path and every volume control. Reseat headphone or speaker plugs, confirm powered speakers are switched on, and check hardware mute controls. Verify the Windows volume slider is not muted and that the particular app has not been muted. When testing speakers, unplug wired headphones so the headphone jack cannot redirect playback.
  4. Turn off audio enhancements. In Settings > System > Sound, select the output device, open its advanced settings, and set Audio enhancements to Off. Enhancements are reversible processing effects, but some drivers handle them badly and produce silence, pops, or distortion.
  5. Confirm enablement and the default endpoint. Open More sound settings, inspect the Playback tab (and Recording when working with a microphone), and check the device’s properties. Device usage should read Use this device (enable). For USB and HDMI hardware, return to Settings > System > Sound and select the endpoint you want under Output so Windows uses it as the default route.
  6. Install pending Windows updates and restart. Go to Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart the PC. Audio changes or driver packages can remain incomplete until the restart occurs, so test again only after Windows has returned to the desktop.
  7. Repair the audio driver. Open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers. Use the device’s update option first. If that does not help, uninstall the audio device and restart; Windows can then reinstall it. If the built-in package is unsuitable, install the latest Windows-compatible driver supplied by your PC or sound-card manufacturer. If the failure began immediately after an update, open Properties > Driver and choose Roll Back Driver when that option is available.

These steps move from routing and settings changes to driver changes. Settings adjustments are easy to undo; uninstalling a device is more invasive, so use it only after the earlier checks.

How do I fix speakers or wired headphones that are connected but silent?

First prove that Windows is sending audio to the correct endpoint, then separate a connection problem from a software problem. A silent headset does not necessarily mean the headset is defective.

Check the selected playback endpoint

Use the taskbar speaker icon’s output list and explicitly select the speakers or headphones. In Settings > System > Sound, the same device should appear under Output. If a monitor, dock, USB adapter, or Bluetooth device is also connected, temporarily select the built-in speakers or the wired headset you can physically verify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check mute states and connections

Inspect the headset’s inline mute switch, speaker power switch, and cable seating. Check Windows’ master volume and the application’s own volume control. Unplug the headphones while testing the speakers; many PCs automatically switch endpoints when a plug is inserted.

Remove processing before changing drivers

Set Audio enhancements to Off for the selected output. If the device is listed but remains silent, open More sound settings, verify Device usage is Use this device (enable), and make that playback device the selected output. Run Get Help again after these changes so its diagnostic sees the current routing.

How do I fix “No audio output device is installed” or a missing sound device?

A missing endpoint requires detection and driver checks rather than repeated volume adjustments. Device Manager shows whether Windows can see the audio hardware at all.

Look for and enable the hardware

Open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers. If the audio device appears disabled, use its enable command and restart. Then test the output list in Settings > System > Sound.

Force Device Manager to rediscover it

If the device is absent, choose View > Show hidden devices. Then choose Action > Scan for hardware changes. A hidden or newly detected entry may return after the scan; enable it if necessary and restart Windows.

Install a compatible manufacturer driver

When scanning does not restore the entry, obtain the latest Windows-compatible audio driver from the PC maker or sound-card maker. Match the driver to the exact computer or card model and Windows edition. Install it, restart, and run Get Help. A generic Windows audio driver can also be tried when the manufacturer package fails, but it may expose fewer device-specific features.

Use an alternate path only as a diagnostic

A compatible USB audio adapter can provide another output path when the built-in device is missing or failed. Check the adapter’s Windows 11 compatibility before buying or installing it; an alternate adapter is a workaround, not proof that the original hardware is repaired.

How do I stop crackling, popping, or distorted audio?

Crackling is often caused by audio processing, an unsuitable format, or a damaged driver. Change one variable at a time so you can identify which setting fixes the sound.

Disable enhancements

Open Settings > System > Sound, select the affected output, open its advanced settings, and set Audio enhancements to Off. Test the same recording or video again.

Try another default format

In the output device’s advanced settings, change Default format to another available value and test. Some combinations of hardware and driver do not handle a particular format reliably. Keep the format that plays cleanly rather than assuming the highest value is best.

Refresh the driver and audio services

Update the device in Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers. If the problem remains, uninstall the device and restart so Windows can reinstall it, or use the latest Windows-compatible package from the hardware manufacturer. You can also open services.msc, restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and test again. Restarting these services does not reinstall Windows.

Why does audio work in Windows but not in one app?

When system sounds play but one program is silent, investigate that program’s per-app routing before changing the global driver. Windows can assign a different output and volume to each app.

Inspect Volume mixer

Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Find the affected app, raise its volume, and confirm its Output device is the endpoint you intend to use. A browser, meeting app, or game may be routed to a monitor or headset even while Windows’ general output is correct.

Restart audio components if the app is still silent

Close and reopen the app after correcting its mixer entry. If it remains silent, open services.msc and restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder. Update the audio driver only if the per-app mixer and service restart do not restore sound.

How do I fix sound that stopped after a Windows update?

Treat a post-update failure as a timing or driver-change problem. Complete the update cycle first, then decide whether to keep or revert the driver.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update, install every pending update, and restart.
  2. Test the intended output and check the device in Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Update the audio driver. If the issue began with the update and Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver is available, use the rollback option and restart.
  4. If sound still fails, restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder through services.msc, then test again.

Rollback is conditional: Windows only presents it when a prior driver is retained. Do not remove a working driver merely because a newer version exists.

How do I restore a microphone that Windows 11 cannot use?

Microphone failures are frequently permission failures rather than playback failures. Check privacy controls before replacing the microphone or its driver.

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  2. Turn on Microphone access.
  3. Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
  4. If Windows lists a control for the specific program, enable that app as well, then reopen the program and test.

If the microphone is still absent, inspect the Recording tab in More sound settings and Device Manager. The same enablement, update, reinstall, and manufacturer-driver checks used for playback devices apply to a recording device that Windows cannot detect.

Which Windows 11 audio fix should I try for my symptom?

Use this decision table to choose the least disruptive remedy that matches the failure. “Reversible” means the action can normally be undone without removing hardware or software.

Symptom or trigger First remedy Next escalation Scope
No sound from speakers or wired headphones Select the output, check mute and connections, disable enhancements Enable the playback device, update or reinstall its driver Whole-system playback
“No audio output device is installed” or missing device Device Manager enablement, hidden-device view, hardware scan Install a compatible manufacturer driver; consider a compatible USB adapter as an alternate path Hardware detection
Crackling or distortion Turn enhancements off and try another default format Restart audio services, then update or reinstall the driver Playback quality
Only one app is silent Volume mixer app volume and output device Restart Windows audio services; update the driver if needed Single application
Failure began after Windows Update Install pending updates and restart Update or roll back the audio driver, then restart services Post-update regression
Microphone unavailable Enable microphone privacy permissions Check Recording devices and the driver Recording input

Why this order reduces risk

Output selection, volume, enhancements, and privacy switches alter settings without removing a device. Device Manager reinstall and driver rollback change the software that communicates with the hardware, so they belong after routing and restart checks. Service restarts sit between those levels: they reload Windows’ audio components without touching personal files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if none of these steps restores audio?

Record the symptom and the last step that changed it before escalating. Note whether the device appears in Settings > System > Sound, whether it appears in Device Manager, whether system sounds work, and whether the fault affects speakers, headphones, HDMI, USB, Bluetooth, or only a microphone. This information distinguishes a routing error from a detection or driver failure.

  • If the endpoint appears and only one app fails, keep the investigation in Volume mixer and that app.
  • If the endpoint is missing from both Sound settings and Device Manager, repeat the hidden-device and hardware-scan checks and verify the exact manufacturer driver.
  • If a driver update introduced the failure, use rollback when offered rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same package.
  • If a compatible alternate output works while the built-in device does not, continue using the alternate path temporarily and have the original hardware or its manufacturer driver checked.

Microsoft’s guidance does not publish a guaranteed success rate for these fixes, so a persistent hardware-level failure may require the PC or sound-card manufacturer’s support process after the Windows checks are exhausted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an HDMI monitor change where Windows sends sound?

Yes. HDMI displays can appear as separate playback endpoints, and Windows may select one even when you expect the laptop or desktop speakers. Open the taskbar speaker icon’s output list and explicitly choose the speakers or headphones you are testing.

Is a USB audio adapter a guaranteed fix for a missing sound device?

No. It is an optional alternate-output path that can help when the built-in audio device is missing or failed, but compatibility with Windows 11 and your hardware must be checked. It bypasses the original device; it does not repair its driver or circuitry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether an audio problem is limited to one application?

Play a Windows system sound or another known-working app. If those produce audio while one program remains silent, inspect that program’s entry in Volume mixer for its volume and assigned output instead of changing system-wide settings first.

Do Windows 11 audio fixes delete my personal files?

The recommended routing, volume, enhancement, privacy, update, service, and driver operations do not target personal files. Uninstalling an audio device in Device Manager removes its current driver entry, after which a restart lets Windows reinstall the device; it is not a Windows reset.
