If a PS5 system-software update is stuck, retry it once from Downloads/Uploads. If it fails again, stop repeating the same download: use Safe Mode, install the official update file from a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive, or troubleshoot the network when the error points to connectivity. Reinstallation is a last resort because it deletes every PS5 data item. The sequence below keeps the least destructive options first and shows exactly when to change methods.

What should I do first when a PS5 update is stuck?

Start with one controlled retry from the console’s download queue. This is the quickest fix for a transient download problem and does not change your installed games or settings.

Retry the update from Downloads/Uploads

  1. Press the PS button on the controller.
  2. Open Downloads/Uploads.
  3. Highlight the system-software update.
  4. Select View Error Info to read the displayed code, then choose Try Again.

Let that retry complete without starting another download at the same time. Record any error code before dismissing it; the code determines whether the next step should be a network repair, Safe Mode, or a USB installation.

When to stop retrying

If the same update fails again, do not keep selecting Try Again indefinitely. Sony’s recovery guidance moves repeated failures to the PC/Mac USB method, which changes both the download path and the source file. A second failure is therefore the point to change methods rather than spend time repeating an unchanged attempt.

How do I update a PS5 in Safe Mode?

Safe Mode is the recovery route when the PS5 cannot reach the Home screen or the normal update controls are unavailable. It starts the console with a limited menu so you can run Update System Software without relying on the regular interface.

Enter Safe Mode

  1. Turn the PS5 completely off.
  2. Press and hold the console’s power button.
  3. Release the button after you hear the second beep.
  4. Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable. A wireless connection is not sufficient for this Safe Mode menu.
  5. Press the controller’s PS button when prompted.

Choose Update System Software. From there, follow the option that matches your situation: an internet update if the console can reach Sony’s service, or the USB-storage option if repeated online downloads have failed.

What Safe Mode does—and does not do

Opening Safe Mode does not by itself erase the console. The data-loss warning applies to the separate reinstall command, not to selecting Update System Software. Read every menu label carefully; do not choose a reset or reinstall option while you are trying to perform a normal update.

How do I install the PS5 update from a USB drive?

Use the USB method after a repeated download failure, or when the console cannot reliably obtain the update over the internet. You need a computer to download Sony’s official file, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a USB data cable for the controller while Safe Mode is open.

Prepare the USB drive

  1. Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting removes existing files, so copy anything important from the drive first.
  2. At the top level of the drive, create a folder named PS5 using uppercase letters.
  3. Inside that folder, create another folder named UPDATE, also in uppercase.
  4. Download the official PS5 system-software update file from Sony on a PC or Mac.
  5. Save the file inside the UPDATE folder with the exact uppercase filename PS5UPDATE.PUP.

Sony specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the regular USB update file. That figure describes the space needed for the normal update package, not a guarantee that every future package will have the same size.

Install the file in Safe Mode

  1. Safely eject the prepared USB drive from the computer and connect it to the PS5.
  2. Turn the console off, then hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
  3. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
  4. Select Update System Software.
  5. Choose Update from USB Storage Device, then select OK.

The console should locate the file automatically when the format, folders, and filename are exact. The USB procedure changes only the update source; it is still a normal system-software update rather than a factory reset.

USB checklist when the file is not recognized

  • Confirm the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, not a format the PS5 cannot read for this procedure.
  • Check that PS5 and UPDATE are separate nested folders at the drive’s top level.
  • Check every character in PS5UPDATE.PUP, including uppercase letters and the .PUP extension.
  • Make sure the file is inside PS5/UPDATE, not in the drive’s root or an extra folder created by the browser.
  • Download only Sony’s official update file. A renamed, modified, or incomplete file will not substitute for the signed package.
  • If the file is still rejected, reformat the drive, recreate the folders, and download a fresh copy before trying Safe Mode again.

What network fixes help when the PS5 update fails online?

Use network troubleshooting when the error identifies a slow, unstable, or unavailable connection. Restarting both ends of the connection and switching to Ethernet removes common Wi-Fi interruptions from the update path.

Restart the console and network equipment

  1. Restart the PS5.
  2. Turn off the router and modem.
  3. Leave both network devices off for at least five minutes, the interval Sony gives in its WS-116522-7 guidance.
  4. Turn the modem and router back on and wait for their normal connection lights.
  5. Try the PS5 update again.

Prefer a wired connection during the update

Connect the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet/LAN cable when possible. A wired path avoids radio interference, weak signal strength, and roaming between wireless bands. If Wi-Fi is the only option, move the console closer to the router and remove obvious obstructions before retrying.

These steps address the connection path only. If the same update continues to fail after a stable restart and wired attempt, switch to the USB procedure instead of repeatedly downloading the same package.

What do PS5 system-software update error codes mean?

Use the code shown by the console to select the appropriate procedure. A code is more useful than a generic “update failed” message because it distinguishes a system-software failure from a network or service condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Error code Meaning Best next action
WS-116522-7 System-software update failure. Restart the PS5 and network equipment, wait at least five minutes with the router and modem off, prefer Ethernet, then use USB if the failure repeats.
CE-113338-9 Error while updating PS5 system software. Retry once, then move to Safe Mode and the official USB update if the normal download continues to fail.
NP-102947-3 The connection is too slow or unstable. Improve the connection, preferably with Ethernet, and restart the network equipment before trying again.
NP-103105-0 The service is currently under maintenance. Do not treat repeated retries as a local repair; wait for the service to become available, then retry.

If your code is not listed, use Sony’s error-code procedure for that exact code. Avoid applying a network fix to a code that identifies a local software problem, or performing a factory reset for a temporary service outage.

Which PS5 update recovery method should I choose?

The right method depends on whether you can reach the Home screen, whether the internet path is trustworthy, and whether the operation changes console data. This comparison keeps those trade-offs visible.

Recovery method Console access Connection path Data impact Hardware needed
Retry from Downloads/Uploads Home screen available Internet Normal update; no reinstall Controller
Safe Mode online update Home screen unavailable or normal update controls fail Internet Normal update; no reinstall Controller and USB data cable
Safe Mode USB update Safe Mode available Local USB file Normal update; no reinstall FAT32/exFAT USB drive, controller, and USB data cable
System-software reinstallation Safe Mode available Manual recovery file Deletes all PS5 data Backup destination, USB drive, controller, and USB data cable

In practice, use the least disruptive row that matches the symptom: one retry, network repair for a connection code, Safe Mode for an inaccessible Home screen, USB after repeated online failures, and reinstallation only when the update-recovery paths do not work.

When should I reinstall the PS5 system software?

Reinstallation is the final recovery step, not a stronger version of the ordinary update. Sony states: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.”

Use reinstallation only after update recovery fails

Consider it only when the console cannot complete a normal update, Safe Mode update, or correctly prepared USB update. Before selecting the reinstall command, back up the PS5 data whenever possible and verify that you are using the reinstall package and instructions intended for that operation, not the regular update file.

Understand the consequence

A reinstall functions as a factory reset: installed games, local saves, captures, settings, and other data stored on the console are removed. The deletion is not reversible through the update menu. If Safe Mode itself will not load, or a reinstall still fails, stop attempting destructive recovery and use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs route.

What should I check in common failure situations?

The update is frozen but no error is visible

Open Downloads/Uploads and use View Error Info before taking action. Retry once; if the download fails again, record the code and change to Safe Mode or USB rather than repeatedly restarting an unknown process.

The PS5 cannot reach the Home screen

Skip the normal queue and enter Safe Mode with the second-beep procedure. The controller must be connected by USB so the console can accept input in that limited environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safe Mode cannot find the USB update

Treat this as a file-layout or formatting problem first. Recheck FAT32/exFAT, the uppercase PS5 and UPDATE folders, and the exact PS5UPDATE.PUP filename; then recreate the structure and redownload the official file.

The download fails with a network code

Follow the network branch: restart the PS5, power down the modem and router for at least five minutes, restore them, and use Ethernet if available. For NP-103105-0, the stated cause is service maintenance, so local network changes will not make the service available immediately.

Every method fails

Do not jump directly to reinstall without a backup. If a correctly prepared USB update and Safe Mode recovery both fail, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs for further diagnosis.

How can I prepare the right hardware before troubleshooting?

  • Keep a USB flash drive available that can be formatted FAT32 or exFAT.
  • Have a USB data cable that allows the controller to communicate in Safe Mode.
  • Use an Ethernet/LAN cable if Wi-Fi instability is suspected.
  • Use a PC or Mac to download the official update file when moving to USB recovery.
  • Back up important console data before any operation described as reinstallation or reset.

These items let you move from a failed online attempt to a controlled local update without introducing an unverified file or an avoidable hardware limitation.

What is the safest decision order for a failed PS5 update?

  1. Read the displayed error in Downloads/Uploads.
  2. Choose Try Again once.
  3. If the code indicates a connection problem, restart the network equipment and wait the specified five minutes; use Ethernet where possible.
  4. If the failure repeats or the Home screen is unavailable, enter Safe Mode.
  5. Install the official file from a correctly formatted FAT32 or exFAT USB drive when online recovery is unreliable.
  6. Back up data and reserve reinstallation for a final attempt.
  7. Contact PlayStation Repairs when Safe Mode or update recovery still fails.

This order preserves data for as long as possible while giving each distinct failure cause its own remedy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the PS5 need to be online while installing an update from USB?

No. The PC or Mac performs the internet download; after the official file is placed in the required folders, the PS5 reads it locally from the USB drive. The console still needs to be powered and connected to the controller in Safe Mode, but the installation path itself is USB-based.

How long should I wait before deciding that an update is stuck?

Sony does not publish one universal completion time for every PS5 update, so elapsed time alone is not a reliable failure test. Use the console’s error information and visible progress; when the same attempt reports a failure, follow the code-specific recovery path rather than relying on a guessed timeout.

What does it mean if my code is NP-103105-0 but my home internet works?

That code identifies PlayStation service maintenance, not necessarily a fault in your router or broadband line. Network restarts may not help while maintenance is active; wait and retry when the service is available.

Does entering Safe Mode automatically erase my PS5?

No. Safe Mode is a limited startup menu, and choosing the ordinary system-software update does not perform a reset. Data deletion occurs when you explicitly select the reinstall operation, which should be preceded by a backup whenever possible.

Does Sony publish a general success rate for PS5 system-software updates?

No general update-success or failure percentage is established in Sony’s support guidance. Troubleshooting should therefore rely on the specific error code, access to the Home screen, and whether a verified USB installation succeeds.
