To transfer music from an iPod to an iPhone, first make sure the music is in the computer library you use for syncing, then connect the iPhone by USB and sync that music to it. Use Finder on a Mac running macOS Catalina or later; use iTunes on Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier. Apple also lists the Apple Devices app as a Windows syncing option. This cable-based process does not require an Apple Music subscription, but it does require the music to be available on the computer.

How does transferring music from an iPod to an iPhone work?

The usual process is computer-mediated: the computer library is the source, and Finder, iTunes, or Apple Devices syncs selected music from that library to the iPhone. The iPod itself is not the destination-to-destination transfer path described in Apple’s syncing instructions. The key first check is whether the songs you want are already available in the computer library you will use.

Think of the computer as the handoff point. You connect the iPhone to the computer, select the music stored in that computer’s library, and let the computer place a selected copy on the iPhone. Connecting an iPod and an iPhone to the same computer does not, by itself, create a direct copy from one device to the other.

If the iPod is the only place the music exists, do not assume that connecting it and then connecting an iPhone will copy the songs between devices. The documented sync workflow starts with music in a computer library. The instructions here do not establish a procedure for extracting music from an iPod that is not already represented in that library. First locate the computer library associated with the iPod, or otherwise make sure the songs are available there, before attempting the iPhone sync.

This distinction also explains why an iPhone can show fewer songs than an old iPod. The iPhone receives only the items you select from the current computer library. It does not automatically inspect every track that happens to be on a connected iPod.

What you need

  • A Mac or Windows computer with the music you want to sync available in its library.
  • A compatible USB cable for the iPhone and computer. The connector depends on the specific iPhone and iPod models; check the devices before choosing a cable. Depending on the equipment, the relevant connectors may include Lightning, USB-C, or a legacy iPod connector.
  • Finder on macOS Catalina or later, or iTunes on Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier. Apple also lists Apple Devices for syncing on Windows.
  • Enough available space on the iPhone for the music you select.
  • The iPhone, the computer, and the cable available at the same time so the sync can complete without disconnecting.

USB syncing is the option to use when you want to choose music on the computer and transfer it over a cable. Apple Music or iTunes Match Sync Library is a separate cloud-based approach for accessing a collection across devices. You do not need to subscribe to Apple Music simply to use the computer-based sync process.

Before you start: a quick preparation checklist

  1. Identify the source library. Decide which Mac or Windows computer contains the music. If you have more than one computer, use the one whose library includes the songs and playlists you want on the iPhone.
  2. Check the operating system. A Mac on macOS Catalina or later uses Finder. A Mac on macOS Mojave or earlier uses iTunes. Windows users can use iTunes, and Apple also lists Apple Devices as a Windows syncing option.
  3. Check the connectors. Make sure the cable fits the iPhone and the computer. A cable that worked with an older iPod may not fit a newer iPhone or the computer’s available port.
  4. Decide what should move. You can select particular songs or playlists rather than transferring every item in the library. Making this decision first helps avoid an unintended large selection.
  5. Review existing iPhone music. If the iPhone has music synced from another computer library, a warning may offer to erase and sync. Read that warning before accepting it.

These checks separate two questions that are often confused: whether the songs are present in the computer library, and whether the iPhone is allowed to sync with that library. Solving the first does not automatically solve the second if the phone is associated with another library.

Which app should I use on my computer?

Choose the app according to the computer’s operating system and version. The steps are similar in that you select the connected iPhone and choose music, but the controls and button labels differ.

Computer App to use Where to select the iPhone
Mac with macOS Catalina or later Finder Finder sidebar
Windows iTunes; Apple also lists the Apple Devices app as a syncing option In iTunes, select the device icon
Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier iTunes Select the connected device in iTunes

If you are unsure which macOS version is installed, check the Mac’s About This Mac screen before starting; the distinction matters because newer macOS versions use Finder for this workflow rather than iTunes.

Do you need iTunes? Not on every computer. Finder is the current Mac workflow on macOS Catalina and later, while iTunes remains the documented workflow for Windows and macOS Mojave or earlier. On Windows, Apple also lists the Apple Devices app. The important requirement is not the brand name of the app but that it can access the computer library and provide the device’s music-sync controls.

How do I sync music to an iPhone with Finder?

On a Mac running macOS Catalina or later, connect the iPhone by USB, select it in Finder, then use the Music controls to choose and sync the music.

  1. Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a USB cable that fits the iPhone and the Mac’s available connection.
  2. Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar. If you do not see it there, confirm that the phone is connected and unlocked, then check the sidebar again.
  3. Select Music in the device controls.
  4. Turn on Sync music onto iPhone.
  5. Choose the music you want to sync. Select the desired items rather than assuming every item in the computer library must be transferred.
  6. Click Apply. If syncing does not begin automatically, click Sync.

The order matters: the Music panel appears after you select the iPhone, and the sync option must be enabled before the selection can be applied. If you change the selection, review it again before starting the operation.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Keep the iPhone connected while the sync runs. When it finishes, check the Music app on the iPhone for a selection of the songs or playlists you chose. Checking a few expected items is a practical way to confirm that the correct computer library and selection were used.

If Finder proposes replacing selected music because the iPhone is associated with another library, do not click through automatically. The replacement warning is separate from the normal Apply and Sync controls and should be handled as described below.

How do I sync music to an iPhone with iTunes?

On Windows or a Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier, use iTunes. Select the iPhone’s Music settings, enable syncing, choose the music, and start the sync.

  1. Connect the iPhone to the computer with a compatible USB cable.
  2. Open iTunes and click the device icon for the connected iPhone.
  3. Choose Music from the device’s content options.
  4. Enable Sync for music.
  5. Select the songs or playlists to transfer.
  6. Click Sync and wait for the process to finish.
  7. Click Done.

The exact selection depends on what is available in the iTunes library. If the music you expect is missing from the list, verify that it is present in the library being used for this sync before proceeding. Selecting a playlist transfers the items represented by that playlist in the current library; it does not cause iTunes to search a connected iPod for additional tracks.

After clicking Sync, leave the iPhone connected until iTunes completes the operation. Then use the iPhone’s Music app to check that representative songs or playlists are present. If the result is not what you expected, return to the Music settings and inspect the selection rather than starting a second sync from a different library.

What if I am using Apple Devices on Windows?

Apple’s current overview also lists the Apple Devices app for syncing on Windows. The central requirements remain the same: connect the iPhone by USB, work from the computer’s available music library, choose the music controls for the connected device, and review any replacement warning before proceeding.

The detailed button sequence above is the Finder sequence for newer Macs and the iTunes sequence for Windows or older Macs. If Apple Devices is the Windows app on your computer, use its corresponding music-sync controls and follow the prompts shown for the connected iPhone. Do not treat the app as a direct iPod-to-iPhone cable; the computer library remains the source.

What should I do if I see “Erase and Sync”?

Pause and review the prompt before accepting it. Apple says a device can sync with only one Apple Music or Apple TV library at a time; choosing Erase and Sync replaces selected content on the iPhone with content from the computer’s current library.

This warning matters if the iPhone already has music synced from another computer library. Do not confirm the replacement until you have checked what is currently on the iPhone and decided that replacing that selected content is acceptable. If you are uncertain, cancel the prompt and verify the iPhone’s contents before trying again.

“Erase and Sync” is not a safe way to merge two different computer libraries. It is a replacement action for the selected content, so the current computer library must be the one whose music you intend to have on the device. If the iPhone’s existing music came from another computer, accepting the warning can remove that selected synced content and substitute the selection from the current library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is also why changing computers can produce a confusing result even when the songs are present. The issue is not necessarily that the files are missing; the iPhone may already be associated with a different Apple Music or Apple TV library. Treat the warning as a decision point, not as a routine confirmation.

Can I use Sync Library instead of a cable?

Yes. Apple Music and iTunes Match offer Sync Library, also called iCloud Music Library in older documentation, as a way to access a collection across devices. This uses cloud access rather than the computer-to-iPhone cable sync described above.

With Apple Music, turn on Sync Library to make the library available on devices. Availability and features vary by region and subscription. Cloud access also depends on an internet connection, whereas the cable workflow begins with a USB connection and allows you to select music from the computer library.

There is an important replacement risk: Apple’s older iCloud Music Library documentation warns that turning on the feature on a device deletes the music currently on that device and replaces it with songs from iCloud. That documentation also says iTunes can no longer sync music to that device afterward. If preserving the current device music matters, review the on-screen consequences before enabling the feature rather than treating cloud syncing as a merge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sync Library is therefore an alternative management method, not an extra transfer stage that must be enabled after a cable sync. Decide whether you want the iPhone managed from the computer or to access the collection through the cloud. Enabling the cloud feature without understanding its replacement behavior can produce a result different from simply adding the old iPod selection.

How do I choose between cable sync and Sync Library?

Use cable sync if you want to select music from a computer library without subscribing to a music service. Consider Sync Library if you want the collection available across devices through the cloud and have the relevant Apple subscription and regional availability.

Consideration Finder, iTunes, or Apple Devices sync Sync Library
Where music comes from A computer library A cloud-accessible collection
Subscription No Apple Music subscription is required for cable syncing Requires the relevant Apple subscription; availability and features vary by region
Selection control Choose music such as songs or playlists in the computer sync controls Matching and availability may depend on the Apple catalog and region
Connection USB cable Internet access for cloud access or downloads
Replacement risk “Erase and Sync” replaces selected content from the current library Older Apple documentation warns that enabling iCloud Music Library replaces music already on the device with songs from iCloud

These are alternatives with different trade-offs, not two steps that should automatically be combined. If you intend to manage music by cable, avoid enabling Sync Library without first understanding its effect on the device’s existing music and subsequent iTunes syncing.

Cable sync is the more controlled choice when you know exactly which albums, songs, or playlists are in the computer library and want to select them. It also avoids the Apple Music subscription requirement. Sync Library is useful when the priority is access across devices, but its availability depends on the subscription and region, and matching may depend on the Apple catalog rather than simply placing every computer file on the phone.

What can go wrong during the transfer?

Most avoidable problems come from using the wrong app, syncing from a library that does not contain the desired tracks, or accepting a replacement prompt without checking its effect.

  • The iPhone does not appear: Check that the USB cable is connected, that it is compatible with the devices, and that you are looking in the right place for your operating system: Finder’s sidebar on current macOS, or the device controls in iTunes. On a Mac, make sure the iPhone is unlocked and then check Finder’s sidebar again.
  • The music is missing from the selection: Confirm that the songs are available in the computer library you selected. The documented workflow syncs from that library; it does not establish a direct iPod-to-iPhone copy. If the tracks exist only on the iPod, the computer library step has not yet been satisfied.
  • You see “Erase and Sync”: Stop and review the replacement warning. Accept only if replacing the iPhone’s selected synced content with material from the current computer library is intended.
  • Sync does not start after setup: In Finder, click Sync if clicking Apply does not start it automatically. In iTunes, click Sync to begin the selected transfer.
  • The cable does not fit: Confirm the connector on both the iPhone and the computer. A cable suitable for one iPod or iPhone generation may not fit another. Check whether your devices use Lightning, USB-C, or a legacy iPod connector before buying a replacement.
  • You selected the wrong computer: Stop before syncing if the library does not contain the expected songs or playlists. A device sync uses the current computer library, so switching to another computer can trigger the one-library warning or produce a different selection.
  • The iPhone has less music than the iPod: Review the specific songs and playlists selected in Finder or iTunes. The process transfers the selected items, not automatically everything on the iPod.
  • Cloud syncing changes the existing music: If you enabled Sync Library or the older iCloud Music Library feature, review its replacement behavior. Older Apple documentation warns that music currently on the device may be deleted and replaced with songs from iCloud, and that iTunes syncing may no longer be available for that device.

A practical decision path

  1. Is the music in a computer library? If yes, continue with cable sync. If no, connecting the iPod and iPhone alone is not the documented transfer path; first identify where the computer library for those songs is located.
  2. Are you on macOS Catalina or later? Use Finder. On Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier, use iTunes; on Windows, Apple also lists Apple Devices.
  3. Do you want selected items or cloud access? Choose individual songs or playlists in the computer sync controls for a cable transfer. Choose Sync Library only if the relevant subscription and regional availability suit you.
  4. Does a replacement warning appear? Stop, inspect the iPhone’s existing synced content, and proceed only if replacement with the current library is intended.
  5. Did the sync finish? Keep the cable connected through completion, then check the Music app for representative items from your selection.

How can I avoid replacing the wrong music?

Use one computer library deliberately and inspect the selection before clicking the final sync control. The one-library rule means an iPhone is not designed to maintain cable-synced music from multiple Apple Music or Apple TV libraries at the same time. If the prompt says the iPhone is synced with another library, regard it as a warning about replacement, not as an invitation to combine libraries.

Cloud access has a similar caution. Older Apple guidance explicitly warns that enabling iCloud Music Library deletes music currently on the device and replaces it with songs from iCloud. Therefore, neither “Erase and Sync” nor enabling the older cloud library feature should be treated as a harmless add-on. Both can change what is currently available on the iPhone.

Can I transfer only a few songs or playlists?

Yes. In Finder, enable music syncing and choose the desired music rather than the entire computer library. In iTunes, enable Sync and select the songs or playlists to transfer. Reviewing the selection is especially important when the iPhone has limited space or when you are trying to reproduce only part of an older iPod collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens after the transfer?

The selected music becomes available in the iPhone’s Music app after the sync completes. The cable method does not require an Apple Music subscription, but the iPhone remains managed from the computer library used for that sync. If you later decide that you want cloud access across devices, evaluate Sync Library separately and read the replacement implications before turning it on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transfer music from an iPod to an iPhone without Apple Music?

Yes, you can use the computer-based USB sync process without an Apple Music subscription. The music still needs to be available in the computer library used for syncing.

Do I need iTunes to transfer music?

Not always. Use Finder on macOS Catalina or later. Use iTunes on Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier; Apple also lists the Apple Devices app as a Windows syncing option.

Can I copy songs directly from the iPod to the iPhone?

The documented Apple workflow is computer-mediated. The songs must be available in the computer library used for syncing; connecting the two devices does not itself establish a direct copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I sync only a few songs or playlists instead of my whole library?

Yes. The Finder workflow lets you choose the music to sync, and the iTunes workflow lets you select songs or playlists. Review the selection before starting so the iPhone receives the items you intended.

Why does Apple say my iPhone is synced with another library?

Apple limits a device to syncing with one Apple Music or Apple TV library at a time. The message is a warning that syncing with a different computer library may replace selected content, not a prompt to merge libraries.

What does “Erase and Sync” do?

It replaces selected content on the iPhone with content from the current computer library. Accept it only when that replacement is intended; it is not a way to merge two libraries.

Which cable do I need?

Use a USB cable compatible with the specific iPhone and computer. Check the connectors before buying; depending on the devices, you may need Lightning, USB-C, or a legacy iPod connector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my music exists only on the old iPod?

The syncing steps require the music to be available in the computer library. Connecting the iPod and iPhone does not establish the direct extraction and transfer procedure described here, so first identify the computer library associated with the music.

Is Sync Library safer than cable syncing?

They have different risks. Cable syncing can show an “Erase and Sync” replacement warning, while older Apple documentation warns that enabling iCloud Music Library deletes music currently on the device and replaces it with songs from iCloud. Review the consequences before choosing either replacement action.

Can I use Sync Library and iTunes cable syncing together?

Treat them as alternative management methods. Older Apple documentation says that after iCloud Music Library is enabled on a device, iTunes can no longer sync music to it, so understand that consequence before enabling the cloud feature.

The Bottom Line

Put the iPod-era music in the computer library first, then connect the iPhone by a compatible USB cable and sync selected songs or playlists. Use Finder on macOS Catalina or later, iTunes on Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier, or Apple’s listed Apple Devices option on Windows. Review every “Erase and Sync” or cloud-library replacement warning before accepting it.
