How to Transfer iPhone Videos to iCloud: Photos or Drive?

The simplest way to transfer videos from an iPhone to iCloud is iCloud Photos. On your iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, turn on Sync this iPhone, and leave the phone on dependable Wi‑Fi and power while the library uploads. iCloud Photos keeps the videos in their original formats at full resolution, then makes the same library available on your other Apple devices, iCloud.com, and a Windows PC.

After the upload is confirmed, Optimize Storage can replace local full-resolution copies with smaller versions while the originals remain in iCloud. Use iCloud Drive instead when you need to upload selected clips as ordinary files in folders rather than maintain a synchronized Photos library. The distinction matters: deleting an iCloud Photos video deletes it from every device using that library, so verify access and keep an independent backup before removing anything.

What is the best way to transfer iPhone videos to iCloud?

For videos already in the Photos app, iCloud Photos is Apple’s intended library workflow. It uploads automatically after synchronization is enabled, preserves original formats such as HEVC and MP4 at full resolution, and synchronizes edits across devices. You do not need to select each clip or connect a cable.

Use iCloud Drive for a different job: uploading individual videos as files that live in a folder structure. Drive is manual, while Photos is a continuously synchronized media library. Decide which behavior you want before starting, because the services have different organization and deletion rules.

How do I turn on iCloud Photos on an iPhone?

Complete these steps on every device that should see the same library. Use the same Apple Account on each device; otherwise the devices will not share one iCloud Photos collection.

  1. Sign in consistently. Confirm that the iPhone and the other Apple devices you want to use are signed in to the same Apple Account.
  2. Open the Photos setting. In Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, and tap Photos.
  3. Enable synchronization. Turn on Sync this iPhone. Apple says that when iCloud Photos is turned on, photos and videos automatically upload to iCloud.
  4. Check the upload status. Open the Photos app and look at the account or profile status indicator. A partially filled blue circle indicates active uploading. The same area can show that syncing is paused, that storage is nearly full, or that storage is full.
  5. Give a large library suitable conditions. Connect the iPhone to reliable power and Wi‑Fi. Upload duration depends on the size of the collection and the speed and stability of the internet connection; Apple does not publish one universal completion time.
  6. Choose local-storage behavior. Select Optimize Storage if you want the iPhone to retain space-saving versions. Select Download and Keep Originals if full-resolution copies must remain on the phone.
  7. Verify elsewhere. Before deleting any local clips, open the library on another Apple device or at iCloud.com and play several uploaded videos, including some of the largest or most recent files.

Turning on synchronization does not create a one-time export. It establishes an ongoing relationship: new videos, edits, and deletions continue to propagate while the setting remains enabled.

What does iCloud Photos store, and what remains on the iPhone?

iCloud Photos stores videos in their original formats at full resolution, including HEVC and MP4. The cloud library is available on Apple devices, iCloud.com, and a PC, and edits are synchronized so a change made on one device appears on the others.

The iPhone’s local copy depends on the storage option you choose. With Download and Keep Originals, the phone keeps full-resolution files as well as the iCloud copy, which provides convenient offline access but uses more device storage. With Optimize Storage, full-resolution originals stay in iCloud and the iPhone keeps smaller, space-saving versions as needed. The phone can download an original when you view or edit a video, provided an internet connection is available.

Optimization is not a separate backup or an export. It changes how much of the library is stored locally while the iCloud Photos collection remains the authoritative synchronized library.

How do I free iPhone storage without losing videos?

Enable Optimize Storage only after the upload has completed and you have verified the library from another location. This lets iCloud retain full-resolution originals while the iPhone removes local originals when it needs room.

Safe sequence for reclaiming space

  1. Turn on Sync this iPhone in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos.
  2. Keep the phone on power and Wi‑Fi until the Photos status no longer shows active uploading or a storage-related warning.
  3. Check iCloud.com or another device signed in to the same Apple Account. Open videos from different dates and confirm that they play.
  4. In the Photos settings, choose Optimize Storage.
  5. Allow the phone time to recalculate and release local space. The amount freed varies with the library and the device’s available capacity.

Do not treat a disappearing full-resolution file from the iPhone as evidence that it was deleted. With optimization enabled, the original remains in iCloud and a smaller local version remains available. If you need a particular clip offline, open it while connected and wait for the original to download.

When should I keep originals on the phone?

Choose Download and Keep Originals when you regularly work without internet access, need immediate full-resolution editing, or are preparing a separate local archive. This option requires enough iPhone capacity for the entire library and any new recordings.

How can I tell whether an iPhone video is still uploading?

The Photos app’s account or profile status indicator is the quickest check. A partially filled blue circle means uploads are in progress. A paused message means synchronization is temporarily stopped, while nearly-full or full-storage warnings indicate that iCloud capacity may prevent additional uploads.

If the status is paused

  • Reconnect to a dependable Wi‑Fi network and power source.
  • Check whether the iPhone is in a condition that limits background activity, such as low battery or an unstable connection.
  • Reopen Photos and inspect the status indicator again after the connection is stable.

If storage is nearly full or full

Videos and photos in iCloud Photos count against iCloud storage. When the collection exceeds the available capacity, Apple directs users to obtain more iCloud storage through iCloud+. You can also reduce the library deliberately, but do not delete items until you have confirmed that a separate copy exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a single clip appears stuck

Compare that clip’s size and format with other videos that uploaded successfully. Keep the iPhone on power and Wi‑Fi, then check the status again. If the library remains stalled, make sure the account has available iCloud capacity before attempting any deletion or re-import.

How do I upload selected videos with iCloud Drive instead?

iCloud Drive is appropriate when a video should behave like a normal file in a folder, separate from the chronological Photos library. Uploads are manual, and the resulting files appear in the Files app on an iPhone when iCloud Drive is enabled.

  1. Sign in to the desired Apple Account and ensure iCloud Drive is enabled for the devices that should access the files.
  2. Open iCloud.com/iclouddrive in a browser.
  3. Choose File Upload.
  4. Select the video files or photos to upload, then wait for the upload to finish.
  5. Open the Files app on the iPhone and browse iCloud Drive to confirm that the files are present.

Drive is useful for a hand-picked set of clips, project folders, or files that should not be mixed into the Photos timeline. It does not replace iCloud Photos for automatic camera-library synchronization. Choose one workflow for each purpose rather than uploading the same library to both services and consuming storage twice.

What is the difference between iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive for videos?

The right choice depends on whether you want an automatically synchronized library or manually managed files.

iPhone access Photos app Files app when iCloud Drive is enabled

Neither service should be confused with an independent archival backup. iCloud Photos is designed to keep one synchronized collection, not multiple historical copies of every edit or deletion.

Can I delete videos from my iPhone after they upload to iCloud?

Deleting a video from the Photos app while iCloud Photos is active deletes it from every device using that iCloud Photos library. Apple states that deletion is synchronized across those devices, so the action is not a way to remove only the iPhone’s local copy.

Use optimization instead of deletion

If your goal is to free iPhone storage while preserving the library, use Optimize Storage. It removes local full-resolution copies as space is needed without removing the videos from iCloud Photos.

If you intentionally delete a video

Deleted items move to Recently Deleted, where Apple says they can be recovered for 30 days. After 30 days, they are permanently deleted. Treat that period as a recovery window, not as a long-term archive, and verify the video’s value before the window expires.

Keep a separate backup

Apple notes that iCloud Photos items are not duplicated in iCloud Backup and advises keeping backup copies of the library. An independent copy on a computer or external storage protects against accidental synchronized deletion and gives you a version that is not tied to the Photos library’s current state.

How do I access uploaded iPhone videos on other devices?

Sign in to the same Apple Account on the other Apple device and enable iCloud Photos there if you want the Photos library to appear in its Photos app. The library is also available through iCloud.com and on a PC, allowing you to check uploads without relying on the original iPhone.

For iCloud Drive uploads, open the Files app and browse iCloud Drive on an iPhone or use iCloud Drive on the web. The file remains in its folder rather than appearing in the Photos timeline unless you separately save or import it into Photos.

Why are my iPhone videos not uploading to iCloud?

Most failed or delayed uploads come from an incomplete connection, a paused sync state, or insufficient iCloud capacity. Use the status indicator in Photos to identify which condition applies before changing settings.

Check the Apple Account and setting

Return to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and confirm that Sync this iPhone is on. If the phone is signed in to a different Apple Account than your other devices, the videos will upload to a different library.

Check power and Wi‑Fi

Large videos can take substantial time to transfer. Connect the iPhone to reliable power, use stable Wi‑Fi, and leave Photos available long enough for the status to update. Upload speed is governed by the collection size and connection speed, so a large first upload should not be judged by the time required for a single short clip.

Check available iCloud storage

Open the iCloud settings and look for nearly-full or full-storage warnings. Because iCloud Photos uses iCloud capacity, a full plan prevents additional videos from completing. Obtain more iCloud storage through iCloud+ if the library is larger than the available space, or remove content only after making an independent copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the library is still processing

A partially filled blue circle means the process is active, not necessarily stalled. Avoid repeatedly turning synchronization off and on while an upload is progressing; doing so makes it harder to tell whether the original queue is advancing. Give the phone consistent power and network conditions, then reassess the indicator.

How much iCloud storage do iPhone videos use?

Every photo and video in iCloud Photos consumes iCloud storage. The amount depends on the files in your library, including their original resolution and format; Apple does not provide one universal storage figure for an iPhone video because recording settings and clip length vary.

  • A durable metal housing offers exceptional durability and protects the USB-A and USB-C connectors
  • Available in capacities up to 1TB to carry your entire content library in your pocket

When your collection exceeds the plan, uploads cannot complete until you create capacity or obtain more iCloud storage through iCloud+. The storage requirement is for the cloud library, not merely for the smaller optimized versions kept on the iPhone.

Before starting a large transfer, review available iCloud capacity and estimate whether the library can fit. This prevents a partial upload that leaves the newest videos unavailable from other devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do before moving a very large video library?

Prepare the account, network, and recovery plan before enabling synchronization for thousands of files.

  • Confirm the same Apple Account is used on every device that needs access.
  • Check available iCloud storage and decide whether iCloud+ capacity is required.
  • Connect the iPhone to power and a dependable Wi‑Fi network for the initial upload.
  • Decide whether the phone needs full originals offline or can use Optimize Storage.
  • Keep an independent copy of irreplaceable videos because iCloud Photos synchronizes deletions and is not duplicated in iCloud Backup.
  • Plan a verification pass on another device or iCloud.com before deleting or reorganizing anything.

Do not interrupt the process simply because the library takes longer than expected. Apple documents no universal upload-time estimate; the collection’s size and the internet connection determine the actual duration.

Which workflow should I choose for my videos?

Choose iCloud Photos when the clips are part of your camera library and you want automatic upload, synchronized edits, and access through Photos on multiple devices. Choose iCloud Drive when you need explicit folders and manual control over which files are uploaded. If freeing iPhone space is the objective, use iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage rather than deleting videos from the synchronized library.

Whichever method you use, verify complete playback from another location and maintain a separate backup for irreplaceable footage. That combination gives you cloud access without confusing synchronization with archival protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will iCloud Photos upload videos when my iPhone is locked?

Apple’s guidance is to leave the phone connected to reliable power and Wi‑Fi for large libraries and to monitor the Photos status indicator. Upload progress can vary with collection size and connection speed, so check the indicator rather than assuming a fixed background time.

Can I use iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive for different videos?

Yes. You can keep your camera library in iCloud Photos while placing selected project files or organized folders in iCloud Drive. Remember that both services use iCloud storage, so uploading the same clip to both consumes capacity in both locations.

What happens to edits made after a video is uploaded?

Edits made within the iCloud Photos library synchronize across devices using that library. A file uploaded to iCloud Drive remains a file in its folder; editing behavior follows the app you use to open or replace that file rather than Photos-library synchronization.

Can I recover a video after the Recently Deleted period ends?

Apple says items in Recently Deleted can be recovered for 30 days. After that they are permanently deleted, so an independent copy on a computer or external storage is the reliable recovery option.
