How to Transfer Everything to a New iPhone Without Losing Data

Back up first, choose the transfer method that fits, and verify synced data, apps, and cellular service before you erase or trade in your old iPhone.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest way to move to a new iPhone is to confirm a recent backup, transfer or restore during the new phone’s setup, and verify your important data and cellular service before erasing the old phone. Use Quick Start if you have both iPhones; restore from iCloud or a computer backup if that better fits your situation. “Everything” does not travel in one package: some information is backed up, some syncs separately, and payment cards and biometrics need fresh setup.

Choose the transfer method that fits

Method Best for What to expect
Quick Start: direct transfer You have both iPhones and can keep them together until copying finishes. Follow the setup prompts with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on the old iPhone. Keep both devices near each other and plugged into power. Duration varies with the network and amount of data. Apple’s Quick Start guide
Quick Start: download from iCloud You want to start using the new phone while apps and data continue downloading. Choose the iCloud option when prompted. Content may not all be present immediately; leave the phone on Wi-Fi and power as downloads continue. Apple’s Quick Start guide
Restore from iCloud backup The old phone is unavailable, or you prefer restoring from a saved cloud backup. Select a recent backup during setup. Items already synced with iCloud may download separately rather than being part of the backup. Apple’s backup and restore guidance
Restore from a Mac or PC backup You have a local backup or prefer using a computer. Use Finder on a Mac, or Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows as applicable. Select the backup by date and size; an encrypted backup requires its password. Apple’s backup and restore guidance
Move to iOS You are switching from Android. Run the transfer from Android during initial iPhone setup. If setup is already complete, using Move to iOS requires erasing the iPhone and starting over; manual transfer is the alternative. Apple’s Move to iOS guidance

Choose based on whether you have the old phone, whether a recent backup exists, whether reliable Wi-Fi or a computer is available, and how long you can leave both phones occupied. A direct transfer keeps both phones in use until it completes; an iCloud download can let you begin using the new phone sooner.

Prepare before you start

  • Confirm a current backup. On the old iPhone, check Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and run a backup if needed. Apple recommends having a backup and your Apple Account password ready before transferring. Apple’s new-device setup checklist
  • Charge both phones and have power nearby. Quick Start requires the old device to remain close to the new one during transfer. Apple’s Quick Start guide
  • Check available iCloud storage. If you lack space, eligible new iPhone purchasers can receive enough temporary iCloud storage for a backup for up to three weeks. On the old device, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Get Started. Apple’s temporary iCloud storage guidance
  • For a computer backup, encrypt it if you need Health and Activity data. Keep the encryption password: you will need it to restore. Apple says unencrypted computer backups do not transfer Health and Activity data; encryption also allows Keychain data in a computer backup. Apple’s computer transfer guidance Apple’s backup comparison
  • Check SIM or eSIM arrangements. Activation and transfer options vary by iPhone model and carrier. Contact the carrier if the new device needs a different SIM or service does not activate. Apple’s setup checklist Apple’s SIM and eSIM guidance

Transfer directly from iPhone with Quick Start

  1. On the old iPhone, connect to Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, unlock it, and leave it at the Home Screen.
  2. Turn on the new iPhone and place it near the old one. Follow the setup prompts. If the Quick Start prompt disappears, restart both devices and try again. Apple’s Quick Start guide
  3. Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or its mobile network, activate service if prompted, and set up Face ID or Touch ID.
  4. Choose a direct transfer to copy from the old phone, or choose the iCloud download option if you want to begin using the new phone while apps and data download in the background.
  5. For direct transfer, keep both phones close together and plugged into power until copying is complete. The time varies with network conditions and the amount of data; Apple does not promise a fixed duration.
  6. After setup, leave the new phone connected to Wi-Fi and power so cloud-stored photos, apps, and other content can finish downloading. Apple’s transfer guidance

Restore an iCloud backup

  1. On the old phone, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and run a fresh backup if the latest one is not current. Apple’s setup checklist
  2. Start the new iPhone and follow setup until the transfer or restore screen. Choose the iCloud restore option, or use Quick Start to reach the iCloud backup choice.
  3. Sign in with the Apple Account used for the backup and choose the correct backup by date. Keep the new iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power during restoration.
  4. Allow separately synced content to return over time. iCloud Photos and Messages in iCloud sync through those services rather than being included in the daily iCloud backup; app data may be in iCloud Backup or iCloud Drive, depending on the app. Apple’s explanation of what iCloud backs up

Restore from a Mac or PC backup

  1. Use Finder on a Mac, or Apple Devices or iTunes on a Windows PC as applicable. Connect the new iPhone to the computer that holds the backup. Apple’s computer transfer guidance
  2. During iPhone setup, choose Restore from Mac or PC. In the computer app, select the iPhone, choose Restore Backup, and confirm the backup by its date and size. Enter the password if it is encrypted.
  3. If the new iPhone has already been set up, Apple says it must be erased before restoring a computer backup. Erasing removes data from that phone, so protect anything already on it before proceeding. Apple’s computer transfer guidance
  4. After the restore, keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi and power so content stored in iCloud can download.

A USB data cable is relevant only for this computer route, and only if you need one for the devices and computer you have. Choose a cable that matches their connectors and supports data. Quick Start and iCloud restore do not require a cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What transfers, syncs separately, or needs setup again

An iCloud backup covers information on the device that is not already synced with iCloud. That distinction explains why an item can be absent from the backup but still return after the new phone reconnects to the relevant service.

  • App information: App data may be included in iCloud Backup, while information stored by an app in iCloud Drive is stored there instead. Apps may also require their own account sign-in or recovery steps.
  • Computer-backup content: A computer backup does not store App Store or iTunes content itself; that content can be downloaded again. Health and Activity data are omitted from an unencrypted computer backup, and Keychain data requires encryption. Apple’s backup comparison
  • Payment and biometric settings: Apple Pay information and settings, and Face ID or Touch ID settings, are excluded from both backup types. Expect to add payment cards and enroll biometrics again. Apple’s backup comparison

If you are moving from Android

Install and use Apple’s Move to iOS process while the new iPhone is in initial setup, choosing From Android when asked. If the iPhone setup is already complete, using the app means erasing the iPhone and starting over; that removes data currently on it. Alternatively, move content manually. Apple’s Move to iOS guidance

Fix common transfer problems

  • The Quick Start prompt disappears: Restart both iPhones and try again. Apple’s Quick Start guide
  • The computer restore option is missing: Check whether the new phone has already completed setup. Apple requires an already-set-up iPhone to be erased before restoring a computer backup. Protect its current data first. Apple’s computer transfer guidance
  • Health or Activity data is missing after a computer restore: Check whether the backup was encrypted. Apple states that these data do not transfer from an unencrypted computer backup. Apple’s computer transfer guidance
  • Photos or messages look incomplete: Check whether iCloud Photos or Messages in iCloud was enabled on the old phone, then allow syncing or downloading to finish on Wi-Fi. Apple’s iCloud backup explanation
  • There is no cellular service: Check SIM or eSIM setup and contact the carrier if the new model needs a different SIM or activation does not complete. Apple’s setup checklist Apple’s SIM and eSIM guidance
  • The new phone is managed by work or school: Quick Start cannot transfer data from a current device when the new iPhone is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business. Follow the organization administrator’s setup policy. Apple’s Quick Start guide

Verify the new iPhone before erasing the old one

Keep the old iPhone and its backup until you have checked the items that matter to you. On the new phone, verify that key photos and videos are present; messages and contacts appear; notes, files, and essential app data are available; your Apple Account is signed in; and calls and mobile data work. Check Watch or Health information if you rely on it, and open apps that store information in their own cloud accounts to sign in or complete recovery steps. If an item is still syncing, wait before wiping or trading in the old phone.
