How to Transfer an eSIM to a New Phone

To transfer an eSIM, keep both phones nearby, unlocked, charged and connected to reliable Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, then start the transfer in the new phone’s cellular or SIM settings. The exact process depends on the phone combination and whether your carrier supports automatic transfer. Same-platform moves, such as iPhone to iPhone or Pixel to Pixel, are usually built in; cross-platform moves often require the carrier’s app, an activation link, a QR code or manual details.

Do not erase, trade in or reset the old phone until the new one can place a call, send an SMS and use mobile data. A successful transfer normally deactivates the old eSIM, so keeping that device available is your safest recovery option.

What does transferring an eSIM actually do?

An eSIM is a carrier plan stored in a phone’s embedded SIM hardware rather than on a removable card. A transfer moves the carrier subscription’s activation to the new phone and normally deactivates the old eSIM. Your phone number, plan and carrier account remain the same; the electronic SIM profile on the device changes.

The transfer does not copy photos, apps, messages or other phone data. Use your normal device-to-device backup or migration tool for that separate job. It also does not move a physical SIM: a physical card must be removed and inserted, while an eSIM must be downloaded and activated.

Carrier policy controls the final decision. A phone can have the right hardware and still be ineligible because of carrier support, regional rules, an account-security check, an installment or lock status, or a model restriction.

What should I do before starting an eSIM transfer?

Preparation prevents the most damaging failure: losing service on the old phone before the new phone is ready.

Prepare both phones

  • Charge both phones, or keep them connected to power. A shutdown during activation can leave the new device waiting for a carrier download.
  • Connect both devices to a dependable Wi-Fi network. Cellular data alone is not a reliable substitute during setup.
  • Turn on Bluetooth and keep the phones close together. Nearby-device discovery is part of Apple, Google and Samsung transfer flows.
  • Unlock the old phone and know its passcode. Some platforms require an active screen lock on the source device.
  • Install pending operating-system and carrier updates before retrying. Automatic transfer can depend on a current system component or Google Play Services.
  • Have your carrier-account login and identity-verification information available. You may need them if the automatic option is unavailable.

Check the new phone’s eligibility

Confirm that the new phone is eSIM-capable, not carrier-locked in a way that blocks your plan, and supported by your carrier in your country or region. If you bought a phone for another market, the model may have different eSIM hardware or carrier certification.

Protect your recovery path

Back up the old phone before changing its cellular plan. Leave it powered on and do not erase it until testing on the new phone is complete. If the transfer fails, the old eSIM often continues working, allowing you to contact the carrier without being offline.

Which eSIM transfer method should I use?

Choose the most automated method your devices and carrier offer. The table shows what to try first and what to use when that route is missing.

Phone combination or situation First choice Fallback Important eligibility
iPhone to iPhone eSIM Quick Transfer during setup or Settings > Cellular/Mobile Service > Set Up Cellular/Add eSIM Carrier app, activation link, QR code or manual entry Carrier must support Quick Transfer; Apple’s current instructions specify iOS 18.4 or later
Pixel to Pixel Transfer during Pixel setup, or Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Transfer SIM from another device Carrier activation on the new phone Automatic transfer requires Android 12 or later on both phones, current Google Play Services and a screen lock
Samsung Galaxy to Galaxy Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM > Transfer SIM from another phone Carrier activation or carrier support Current software, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; carrier eligibility varies
iPhone to Android or Android to iPhone Use the setup assistant if it explicitly offers eSIM migration Carrier app, activation link, replacement eSIM, QR code or manual details Cross-platform support is limited to certain carriers, devices and regions
Automatic option missing or failed Retry after updates, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth checks Ask the carrier to issue and activate a replacement eSIM Account verification, device support and lock status may be required

How do I transfer an eSIM from iPhone to iPhone?

Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer is the fastest route when your carrier supports it. Both iPhones should use the same Apple Account, the old iPhone must be unlocked with its passcode, Bluetooth must be on, and Apple’s current instructions require iOS 18.4 or later for this flow.

During new iPhone setup

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and begin setup. Keep the old iPhone nearby, unlocked and connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. When the cellular or mobile-service screen offers a plan transfer, choose the number or plan from the old iPhone.
  3. Read the prompt on the old iPhone and approve the transfer with its passcode or other requested authentication.
  4. Wait while the new iPhone downloads and activates the eSIM. Keep both phones close and do not restart either one unless the screen instructs you to.
  5. When activation completes, test a call, an SMS and mobile data before erasing the old iPhone.

After setup

  1. On the new iPhone, open Settings > Cellular (or Settings > Mobile Service, depending on region).
  2. Tap Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
  3. Choose the plan listed for transfer and confirm on the old iPhone when prompted.
  4. Wait for the carrier activation message, then make the same three tests: voice, text and data.

When the new plan activates, the previous iPhone SIM is deactivated. If no Quick Transfer choice appears, that is usually a carrier-eligibility issue rather than a hardware fault. Use the carrier’s activation app or link, scan its carrier-issued QR code, or enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code supplied by the carrier. Do not use a generic QR-code product; only a carrier-issued credential can activate your line.

How do I transfer an eSIM between Google Pixel phones?

Pixel supports transfer during setup and, on supported combinations, afterward from Settings. Google says automatic transfer requires Android 12 or later on both devices, the current version of Google Play Services and a screen lock.

During Pixel setup

  1. Start setup on the new Pixel and connect it to Wi-Fi.
  2. Keep the old phone close, unlocked and with Bluetooth enabled.
  3. When the setup wizard asks about SIMs, select the plan you want to move.
  4. Tap Transfer, review the number and approve the request on the old phone if prompted.
  5. Tap Activate on the new Pixel and wait for the carrier confirmation.

After setup

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs on the new Pixel.
  2. Tap Add SIM, then choose Transfer SIM from another device.
  3. Follow the nearby-device prompts, select the line and approve the transfer on the old phone.

If the Pixel cannot detect the old device or activation fails, the existing eSIM can continue working. Leave the old phone intact and ask the carrier to activate the new eSIM instead. A carrier may issue a replacement profile rather than retrying the automatic handoff.

How do I transfer an eSIM between Samsung Galaxy phones?

On a supported Galaxy pair, Samsung’s Instant Transfer flow starts in SIM manager. Both phones should have current software, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and the carrier must participate in the feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the new Galaxy, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
  2. Tap Add eSIM, then Transfer SIM from another phone.
  3. On the old phone, tap Transfer when the request appears.
  4. Enter the code shown on the new Galaxy if requested.
  5. Select the phone number or plan to move and approve the transfer on both phones.
  6. Wait for activation, then test calling, SMS and mobile data before resetting the old Galaxy.

Samsung lists only certain carriers as supporting Instant Transfer. If your carrier is not eligible, use its activation procedure rather than repeatedly searching for a missing Galaxy menu. The menu name can also vary slightly by One UI version and country.

Can I move an eSIM from iPhone to Android, or Android to iPhone?

Yes, but cross-platform transfer is selective and less predictable than a same-platform move. The setup assistant may offer migration on particular devices, yet the carrier must support that exact combination. If no offer appears, carrier activation is the normal route.

iPhone to Android

Start the Android setup wizard with the iPhone nearby. On select devices, an upgraded setup method can migrate an eSIM; on other devices, the classic process may ask you to start the transfer later in Android’s SIM settings. Follow the prompt only if it names your number and carrier. If setup offers ordinary data copying but no eSIM step, that does not mean the line has moved.

Android to iPhone

Begin iPhone setup with the Android phone available. Apple’s general guidance for a non-Apple source uses carrier activation or a carrier-provided QR code, while newer cross-platform support exists only for some carriers and devices. If the iPhone shows no eligible plan, finish setup without erasing Android and contact the carrier for a replacement eSIM.

Why cross-platform moves need extra caution

  • The source and destination may use different carrier-transfer protocols.
  • A carrier may support automatic transfer only within one phone family.
  • Regional model variants can change eSIM eligibility.
  • The old device can lose service as soon as the carrier activates the new profile.

Confirm the carrier’s eligibility before wiping either phone. If you must trade in the old device immediately, complete activation and all service tests first, and retain the carrier’s confirmation or QR details for recovery.

What should I do if the eSIM transfer option is missing?

A missing option usually means the carrier, device model, software version or account does not meet the automatic-transfer rules. Work through these checks in order rather than deleting the old eSIM.

  1. Connect both phones to reliable Wi-Fi and turn on Bluetooth.
  2. Install operating-system, carrier-configuration and Google Play Services updates that are offered.
  3. Confirm the old phone is unlocked and has a screen lock if the platform requires one.
  4. Restart both phones, then retry the transfer from the new phone’s cellular or SIM settings.
  5. Check that the new phone is not carrier-locked and that its model is supported in your region.
  6. Open the carrier’s official app or activation link. Look for an option such as Replace SIM, Activate eSIM or Move service.
  7. If the app cannot activate the line, request a replacement eSIM or carrier-issued QR code and complete the account-verification steps.
  8. Keep the old phone powered on until the new profile passes voice, SMS and data tests.

Some carrier quick-transfer systems impose additional account and device restrictions. One documented implementation, for example, requires Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, current software, a screen lock on the source phone and account credentials, and generally limits quick transfer to selected devices of the same type. Treat those conditions as carrier-specific rather than universal rules.

How do I activate an eSIM with a carrier QR code or app?

Use this method when built-in transfer is unavailable or when moving between platforms. The carrier must issue the activation credential for your specific line and destination device.

Carrier app or activation link

  1. Install the carrier’s official app from your phone’s app store, or open the activation link supplied by the carrier.
  2. Sign in and choose the eSIM replacement or new-device activation option.
  3. Verify the account using the requested password, one-time code or identity information.
  4. Select the new phone or enter its requested device identifier, such as an IMEI or EID.
  5. Approve the download and follow the on-screen installation steps.
  6. Wait for the status to change to active, then test calls, SMS and data.

Carrier-issued QR code

  1. Connect the new phone to Wi-Fi.
  2. Open the eSIM-add screen: on iPhone use Settings > Cellular/Mobile Service > Add eSIM; on Android use the SIM manager and choose to add an eSIM.
  3. Choose the QR-code option and scan the code supplied by your carrier.
  4. Confirm the plan details before downloading. A QR code is often single-use, so do not scan it on multiple phones.
  5. Complete activation and perform the three service tests before resetting the old phone.

If the carrier provides manual SM-DP+ address, activation code or confirmation-code fields, enter them exactly as supplied. A single character error can produce an activation failure; do not guess missing values.

How can I troubleshoot a failed eSIM transfer?

The phones do not see each other

Move them within a few inches, unlock both screens, enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and temporarily disable battery-saving modes that restrict nearby-device discovery. Update both operating systems and retry from the new phone’s SIM settings.

The transfer starts but stops at activation

Leave the old phone powered on and connected to Wi-Fi. Check that the new phone is carrier-unlocked and that the account has no pending security review, unpaid restriction or device-change limit. If the carrier cannot complete activation, request a replacement eSIM rather than deleting the old profile.

The old phone lost service but the new phone has no signal

Do not erase either device. Connect the new phone to Wi-Fi, restart it once, and check that the transferred line is enabled in SIM or Cellular settings. If it remains inactive, contact the carrier from another phone and explain that the old profile is deactivated while the new profile is pending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calls work but data or SMS does not

Make sure the transferred line is selected as the default for mobile data and that the line is turned on. Check the carrier’s status page or support channel for an account-side provisioning issue; avoid changing APN values unless the carrier gives exact instructions.

The carrier says the phone is unsupported or locked

Ask which eligibility rule failed: model, region, carrier lock, account type or plan. The carrier may need to unlock the phone, change the plan, register the device identifier or issue a different activation method. A QR code cannot bypass a carrier lock or unsupported model.

How do I verify the new phone is fully working?

Run these checks before wiping the old device:

  • Place an outgoing call and have someone call the number back.
  • Send and receive an SMS, including a message to a different network if possible.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi and load a web page over mobile data.
  • Check that the correct line is selected for mobile data and that dual-SIM labels are clear.
  • Test voicemail and any carrier-dependent short codes you rely on.
  • Confirm that emergency calling information and address settings, where your carrier uses them, remain correct.

After these checks, back up the new phone and remove the old phone from your account only when you are ready to reset or sell it. A factory reset protects your personal data but does not replace carrier deactivation instructions; follow the carrier’s process for a device you are returning.

What does an eSIM transfer not require?

You do not need a SIM-eject tool for an eSIM, because there is no physical card to remove. A cable may help with general photo or app migration, but it is not required for eSIM activation. A generic QR-code card or “universal” activation product cannot substitute for the carrier-issued profile tied to your account.

The transfer itself normally has no separate hardware purchase requirement. What you may need is access to Wi-Fi, the old phone’s passcode, the carrier account and a supported destination device.

Which approach is fastest and safest?

Use the built-in same-platform transfer when it appears and your carrier confirms eligibility. It avoids re-entering activation details and usually completes during setup. Use carrier activation for cross-platform moves or any case where the automatic option is absent; it takes more account verification but works across a wider range of devices.

The safest rule is simple: preserve the old phone until the new phone has demonstrated voice, messaging and data service. That single precaution gives the carrier a working device to verify and keeps you from being stranded if activation needs to be repeated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transfer an eSIM if I no longer have the old phone?

Usually you must ask the carrier to issue a replacement eSIM, because automatic nearby-device transfer requires the source phone. Be prepared to verify the account and provide the new phone’s device identifier; the carrier will deactivate the missing device’s profile as part of replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will transferring an eSIM cancel my phone plan?

No. A normal transfer changes the device hosting the line rather than canceling the subscription. Billing, number and plan terms stay with the carrier account unless you separately change or cancel the service.

Can I keep the same number on two eSIMs at once?

A standard single-line transfer is not a duplication process: activation on the new phone normally deactivates the old profile. A carrier may offer a separate multi-device or number-sharing feature, but that is a different service with its own eligibility and charges.

How long should an eSIM transfer take?

The on-device handoff is often completed within the setup flow, but carrier-side verification can take longer. If activation remains pending after a restart and a stable Wi-Fi connection, stop retrying and ask the carrier to check the line rather than deleting the old eSIM.
