To transfer an eSIM to a new carrier, open an account with the new provider, request a number port if you are keeping your number, and install the new carrier’s eSIM on an unlocked, compatible phone. Keep your old line active and both phones on Wi-Fi while activation runs. Depending on the carrier and phones, installation uses iPhone eSIM Quick Transfer, Android’s transfer flow, a carrier app or activation link, a QR code, or manual SM-DP+ details. Test calls, texts, and mobile data before deleting the old eSIM or cancelling the previous service.
An eSIM transfer moves cellular service, not your photos, contacts, apps, or messages. Those require a separate phone-to-phone or cloud migration.

What does transferring an eSIM to a new carrier actually mean?
An eSIM is an embedded SIM that receives a carrier profile through remote provisioning. When you change carriers, the new provider issues its own profile; the old profile is not a universal file that can be copied between networks. The process has two related but separate parts: installing the new carrier profile and, if you keep your telephone number, porting that number from the old provider.
Activating the new profile can disable the previous SIM. Apple states that when the cellular plan on a new iPhone activates, the previous SIM is deactivated. That is why you should not erase the old profile or close the old account until the new line has passed every test.

What should I check before starting an eSIM carrier transfer?
Spend a few minutes checking eligibility and collecting account information. Most failed activations come from a locked phone, an unsupported model, missing port credentials, or an incomplete software update.
Prepare the old line and porting details
- Keep the old number active. Do not cancel service before the port and activation are complete.
- Find your current carrier account number, billing ZIP code, and port-out PIN or passcode. FCC 23-95 identifies the telephone number, account number, five-digit ZIP code, and customer-assigned passcode when applicable as common wireless-port validation fields.
- Make sure the name and address supplied to the new carrier match the old account closely enough for validation.
- Have the new account login, payment details, and identity-verification information available.
Check the phone and network requirements
- Confirm that the destination phone is carrier-unlocked. A phone locked to the previous provider can reject a new eSIM even when the handset supports eSIM technically.
- Check that the exact model and regional variant supports eSIM and is accepted by the new carrier. Support differs by country, model, and account type.
- Install current operating-system updates. Apple’s Quick Transfer requires iOS 18.4 or later. Google’s automatic Pixel transfer requires Android 12 or later, current Google Play Services, and a screen lock.
- Connect both phones to reliable Wi-Fi. Keep them close together; enable Bluetooth for iPhone Quick Transfer.
- Back up important data separately. eSIM installation does not copy personal content.
Which eSIM transfer method should I use?
Use the method offered for your exact carrier and device combination. A same-carrier phone move may be automated, while a carrier switch normally requires the new provider to issue a fresh profile and process a port.

How do I transfer an eSIM on an iPhone?
Use Apple’s Quick Transfer when both iPhones and the carrier support it. The transfer installs the plan on the new phone and deactivates the previous SIM after activation.
- On the new iPhone, open Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Choose the option to transfer a plan from another iPhone. If no number is listed, select Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
- Keep the old iPhone unlocked and nearby. Follow its prompt, tap Transfer, and enter the displayed verification code if requested.
- Wait for activation to finish. Do not power off either phone or remove the old plan while the progress message is running.
- If a Finish Setting Up Your Carrier’s Cellular Plan banner appears, open it and complete the carrier webpage or verification step.
- Place a test call, send an SMS, and load a webpage with Wi-Fi disabled. Confirm that the new line is selected under Settings > Cellular.
Quick Transfer requires an Apple Account signed in on both devices, the old iPhone’s passcode, Bluetooth, nearby phones, and iOS 18.4 or later. If the option does not appear, the carrier may instead provide an activation notification, QR code, link, app flow, or manual SM-DP+ information. Moving from a non-Apple phone generally needs carrier assistance unless that carrier and both devices support a newer cross-platform flow.
How do I transfer an eSIM on Android or a Google Pixel?
On a supported Pixel, the transfer can occur during initial setup or afterward in SIM settings. Google notes that the exact process varies by carrier.

During new-phone setup
- Keep the old phone nearby and start the new phone’s setup process.
- When asked about mobile service, choose the SIM or eSIM to transfer.
- Tap Transfer, then Activate, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Wait for the carrier confirmation before resetting the old phone.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and test a call, SMS, and mobile data.
After setup is complete
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Tap Add SIM, then Transfer SIM from another device.
- Approve the transfer on the old phone when prompted and complete carrier verification.
- If no transfer is detected, stop retrying random codes and contact the carrier for eSIM activation.
An existing device or eSIM can continue working if an automatic transfer fails, so failure does not necessarily mean the number has been lost. Keep the old phone powered and connected until the provider confirms the new profile is active.

Request a wireless number port when opening the new account. Number porting allows customers to retain their numbers when moving between service providers, but the new carrier must validate the request with information from the old account.
- Tell the new carrier that you want to port an existing wireless number, not receive a new number.
- Submit the current telephone number, account number, five-digit billing ZIP code, and port-out PIN or passcode when the carrier requests it.
- Keep the old service active and reachable. Do not change the old account’s address, PIN, or plan during validation unless support instructs you to do so.
- Install the new eSIM when the carrier supplies it. Porting and profile installation may happen in either order, depending on the provider.
- Wait for the port-complete message, then test incoming and outgoing calls, SMS, and cellular data.
- Only after successful tests should you erase the old eSIM or cancel the old service.
A port is not the same as copying an eSIM. The new carrier creates a new network profile and associates your retained number with it. A mismatch in account information, an incorrect PIN, an inactive old line, or an account restriction can delay or reject the request.
What is different when I switch phones but stay with the same carrier?
A same-carrier phone move may use built-in Quick Transfer because the provider already owns the line and can authorize a replacement profile. A carrier switch requires the new provider to provision its own profile and, for a retained number, coordinate a port with the old provider.
| Situation | What changes | What you need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| New phone, same carrier | Usually a profile replacement or device transfer | Carrier and phone support for Quick Transfer or its app; destination phone compatibility |
| New carrier, same phone | New carrier profile plus number port | Unlocked phone, eSIM support, port credentials, new-carrier eligibility |
| New carrier and new phone | New profile, port, and device compatibility | Everything in the two rows above, including the exact model’s regional support |
| Moving between iPhone and Android | Cross-platform transfer may not be available | Carrier-specific activation instructions; often a QR code, app, or support-assisted setup |
What should I do if the eSIM transfer fails?
Identify the failure stage before changing settings. A missing transfer button, a rejected QR code, and an activated line with no data require different fixes.

No transfer option appears
- Confirm that the carrier and device support direct transfer. If not, use the carrier app, activation link, QR code, or manual details.
- For iPhone, verify both phones use iOS 18.4 or later, share an Apple Account, are unlocked with the old passcode, and have Bluetooth enabled.
- For Pixel, update Android and Google Play Services, enable a screen lock, and retry from Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM.
The phone is locked
Request an unlock from the previous carrier before attempting activation. A locked handset can block a legitimate eSIM from another provider; Google Fi lists a locked device as an activation failure condition.
The QR code or carrier app fails
- Retry on stable Wi-Fi and verify that you are signed in to the intended new-carrier account.
- Check that the device IMEI entered during signup matches the phone receiving the profile.
- Ask the carrier to issue a fresh eSIM. Some providers generate a new profile and immediately deactivate the old one, so do not delete anything until support confirms which profile is current.
- Do not post an activation QR code publicly; anyone who obtains usable activation credentials may be able to provision service.
The eSIM says activated but there is no service
- Restart the phone.
- Open Cellular or SIM settings and confirm that the new line is enabled and selected for voice, messages, and mobile data.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and test an outgoing call, an incoming call, an SMS in both directions, and a webpage.
- Check whether the port is still pending. If all services remain unavailable, contact the new carrier and provide the activation status, device model, and IMEI.
The port is rejected or delayed
Recheck the old account number, billing ZIP code, and port-out PIN character by character. Confirm that the old line has not been cancelled and that no account security lock or fraud hold is blocking the request. Ask the new carrier to submit a corrected port rather than opening a second account with a different number.
When can I delete the old eSIM or cancel the old carrier?
Wait until the new line is fully active and tested without Wi-Fi. The safe point is after you can place and receive calls, send and receive SMS, use mobile data, and see the correct retained number in the phone’s settings and in a test caller’s display.
Once those checks pass, follow the phone’s option to remove the old cellular plan if it is no longer needed. Then cancel the old service through the previous carrier and retain the final bill or port confirmation. If the old account contains another line, a tablet plan, or a voicemail service, make sure you cancel only the intended line.
How can I protect my number during an eSIM transfer?
A port-out can be abused in a SIM-swap attack, giving an intruder control of calls and text-based login codes. Treat the transfer like an account-security event.

- Never disclose a one-time verification code to an unsolicited caller, text sender, or email request.
- Move important accounts away from SMS-only authentication where a stronger method, such as an authenticator app or hardware security key, is available.
- After activation, review the carrier account for unfamiliar devices, contact changes, forwarding settings, or replacement requests.
What data does an eSIM transfer not move?
The cellular profile contains network credentials, not the contents of your phone. Photos, contacts, messages, app data, authenticator tokens, downloaded media, and device settings require the manufacturer’s migration tool, a backup restore, or separate app exports.
Before resetting the old phone, verify that your cloud backup is current and that you can sign in to critical services without relying solely on the old number. Keep the old phone available until banking, messaging, and two-factor authentication apps work on the new device.
What is the safest complete transfer sequence?
- Confirm the destination phone is unlocked, eSIM-capable, supported by the new carrier, and running current software.
- Collect the old carrier account number, billing ZIP code, port-out PIN, and any new-carrier credentials.
- Back up personal data and keep the old line active.
- Connect both phones to Wi-Fi; enable Bluetooth for iPhone Quick Transfer and keep the phones nearby.
- Open the new carrier account and submit a port request if retaining the number.
- Install the new profile using Quick Transfer, Android transfer, the carrier app, activation link, QR code, or manual details.
- Wait for activation and port confirmation.
- Disable Wi-Fi and test calls, SMS, incoming calls, and mobile data.
- Remove the old eSIM and cancel the old service only after every test succeeds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer an eSIM while traveling internationally?
Usually you need an internet connection for profile installation, and roaming or local-regulatory rules can affect activation abroad. Complete a carrier switch before departure when possible, or confirm with both providers that porting and identity verification can be completed from your destination country.
Will my voicemail messages move with the eSIM?
Voicemail is hosted by the carrier, so saved messages and greetings may not survive a carrier change. Export or record anything important before the old account is closed, and set up voicemail again on the new network.
Do I need the old phone to transfer an eSIM?
Direct Quick Transfer normally requires the old phone nearby and unlocked. If it is lost, broken, or unavailable, the new carrier can usually issue a replacement profile after verifying your account, but its identity checks and fees vary.
Can I use two eSIMs during the switch?
Many recent phones support dual-SIM operation, allowing the old and new lines to coexist temporarily. Keep the old line enabled for port-status messages, but select the intended line for mobile data and watch for accidental roaming or calls from the wrong number.
