Build a commodity tracker as a small data pipeline, not just a chart: choose a source for each commodity family, preserve the provider’s original observations and metadata, normalize without erasing context, then show the value alongside its unit, market, date, source, and freshness. FRED is suited to economic and macroeconomic series, EIA to energy, and USDA MyMarketNews to agricultural reports. Nasdaq Data Link is a commercial option when you need broader commodity coverage or deeper history. None should be treated as a universal, automatically real-time source.

Before you begin, choose one commodity and one source, decide whether you need current observations or revision-aware history, and set up server-side storage for raw responses and credentials. The provider documentation—not a single shared clock—should determine your refresh schedule.

What should you decide before building the tracker?

First define what “price” means for the commodity you want to follow. A local agricultural report, an energy-market series, a futures settlement, a spot quote, a retail price, and a macroeconomic index may all describe related markets, but they are not interchangeable observations. A dashboard that puts them on one chart without identifying their definitions can be numerically tidy and economically misleading.

Write down the intended measure before selecting an API:

  • Commodity and product: for example, crude oil versus a refined petroleum product, or a particular agricultural commodity and grade.
  • Market definition: geography, location, delivery point, sector, report, or instrument where applicable.
  • Measurement: unit, currency, and whether the figure is a price, index, or another measure.
  • Time meaning: the period represented by the observation, its publication time, and when your system retrieved it.
  • Use case: a current operational dashboard, long-run analysis, or an account of what was known at a historical point in time.

Those decisions determine whether a provider’s data is a fit. They also prevent a common design mistake: choosing a convenient API first and discovering later that its market, cadence, or measurement does not answer the question.

Which public data source should you use?

There is no single public API that should automatically supply every commodity series. Match the source to the market and observation you need, and keep the provider’s own identifiers and context in your records.

FRED for macroeconomic and economic series

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis describes the FRED API as a REST service that accepts HTTPS requests and returns XML or JSON. Its dimensions include source, release, category, and series, making it useful for economic context and series available through FRED or ALFRED—not a substitute for every physical commodity quote. The Federal Reserve Board says FRED supports programmatic retrieval, bulk observations, complete historical data, and JSON or XML downloads for FRED or DDP series.

FRED API Version 2 launched on November 4, 2025. The Board says account holders need an API key for the new bulk-observation feature. Store the FRED series identifier and the relevant source or release metadata with each observation. Keep the observation date distinct from the time your system retrieved it.

If an analysis asks what values were available at a particular historical date, preserve vintage information rather than overwriting the old value with the latest history. FRED and the Board document vintage-oriented and historical access; a current download alone may not reproduce an earlier view. Readers using older DDP workflows should also note that the Board planned to remove the DDP “Build Your Package” option during the week of November 9, 2026, and points users toward FRED.

EIA for energy and petroleum

Use the U.S. Energy Information Administration for energy data such as crude oil, petroleum products, natural gas, coal, electricity, and related prices or fundamentals. EIA says its API makes public data available in machine-readable form and is free with registration. Its bulk-download facility does not require an API key, while API calls do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EIA APIv2 is organized into hierarchical routes. Its documentation describes metadata discovery, selectable columns, date ranges, facets, and customizable returns. Discover the route and its available dimensions before hard-coding a series; use facets to constrain geography, sector, fuel, or another supported dimension. Retain the returned unit string, since a numeric value without its unit is not safely comparable with another observation.

EIA’s 2026 API documentation limits JSON responses to 5,000 rows per request. For larger histories, constrain the date range, filter the result, paginate where the route supports it, or consider the bulk-download option. Request only the columns needed for the chart or calculation to reduce unnecessary payload and simplify validation.

USDA MyMarketNews for agricultural reports

USDA Agricultural Marketing Service MyMarketNews provides API access to raw Market News data published in agricultural reports. USDA describes the API as a way to pull report data automatically and download large amounts of it. Its documentation provides authentication, filtering, sorting, error handling, examples, and user guidance.

Treat these observations as report-contextual market data, not as exchange settlement prices by default. Preserve the report name, commodity, market or location, grade or quality fields when present, unit, and publication date. Apply report and market filters in the provider adapter rather than repeatedly downloading every report, and retain the original response or a durable reference to it.

Nasdaq Data Link when broader commercial coverage is needed

Nasdaq Data Link documents a Commodity Pricing dataset covering most major commodities. Its documentation says historical data may extend back to 1959 depending on the commodity source. Most prices update daily, with delivery once daily at 18:00 UTC Monday through Friday; reporting lag varies by source. That makes it a possible paid option when public government sources do not provide enough breadth, history, uniformity, or delivery characteristics. It is not thereby free, real time, or interchangeable with an official government series.

Nasdaq separately documents market-data APIs that can provide real-time, delayed, and historical delivery, including snapshot, bars, reference-data, and exchange-data capabilities. That is a different product path from the daily commodity-pricing dataset. Evaluate coverage, latency, licensing, and cost for the specific product rather than assuming one set of delivery terms applies to the other.

How do you design the ingestion pipeline?

Use separate provider adapters and a shared normalized record. Each adapter handles its provider’s authentication, routes, filters, response format, pagination, and errors; the common layer makes observations usable by the dashboard without throwing away the source’s original meaning. This architecture follows the documented differences among FRED, EIA, USDA, and Nasdaq Data Link.

1. Create a source registry

Keep a configuration record for each provider and series or instrument. Include at least the provider, series or instrument identifier, commodity, geography or market, unit, currency when supplied, frequency, expected cadence, authentication method, and applicable terms or license notes. Store source-specific dimensions too: for example, a FRED release, an EIA facet selection, or a USDA report name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This registry separates the definition of a series from the code that downloads it. It also gives the scheduler enough information to avoid treating a monthly economic series like a daily commodity feed.

2. Build one adapter at a time

Start with a single source and a single series. The adapter should construct a request from registry settings, apply required authentication, request the necessary fields and date window, and handle the provider’s response shape. FRED offers REST access with JSON or XML; EIA APIv2 uses hierarchical routes and facets; USDA access is report-oriented; Nasdaq documents both a commodity dataset and separate market-data API paths.

Keep API keys on the server or in a secrets manager. Do not embed FRED or EIA credentials in client-side JavaScript, where dashboard users could inspect them. Keep provider-specific request logic out of the charting code so a change to one route or report does not require rewriting the presentation layer.

3. Save the raw response before transforming it

For every successful retrieval, save the unmodified payload, request parameters, provider name, retrieval timestamp, and a content hash. A raw landing store provides a record of what the provider returned and lets you investigate a parsing change, correction, or disputed observation without relying on a transformed table alone.

Keep this raw layer separate from normalized records. Normalization is useful for querying, but it should not become the only surviving copy of provider-specific fields such as an EIA unit, a USDA report label, or source metadata from FRED.

4. Normalize while retaining provenance

A shared schema should make common queries possible while preserving measurement context. One reasonable shape is:

provider
series_id_or_instrument_id
commodity
market_or_geography
observation_period
publication_timestamp
retrieved_timestamp
value
unit
currency
frequency
source_report_or_release
revision_or_vintage
raw_payload_reference
quality_status

The exact field names are an implementation choice. Make the observation period, publication timestamp, and retrieval timestamp separate fields: a report may be published after the period it describes, and retrieval time says when your pipeline saw it—not when the market observation occurred.

Keep both normalized fields and source-specific metadata. Preserve the original unit and source label even if you also create a converted value. If a conversion is needed, record the input unit, output unit, and explicit conversion rule so another analyst can reproduce it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Validate and flag anomalies

Run validation before the dashboard consumes a new batch. Check that the response matches the expected schema, dates parse, values convert to numeric types, units are present, and the provider and series identifiers match the registry. Check duplicate keys, missing expected observations, unexpected frequency changes, and implausible jumps.

Do not silently delete a surprising value just because it looks wrong. Mark it for review or attach a quality status, then retain the raw payload. A legitimate market move, revised observation, changed unit, or upstream schema change may all look anomalous to a generic rule; the dashboard should distinguish a flagged value from a confirmed error.

6. Serve the dashboard from normalized data

Expose normalized observations through a query API or materialized tables. The serving layer should return the value together with its unit, currency if applicable, market or geography, source, observation period, publication time when available, retrieval time, and quality or revision status. This lets the interface explain what a point means rather than presenting a bare number.

How should you schedule updates and show freshness?

Set refresh schedules by provider and series, not by a universal polling interval. A source’s stated cadence and publication behavior determine when a new observation is likely to exist; polling more frequently does not make an upstream dataset more current.

For Nasdaq Data Link’s documented daily commodity dataset, schedule retrieval after its 18:00 UTC Monday-through-Friday delivery window if that dataset is the one you use. For EIA and USDA, use the schedule of the selected energy series or agricultural report; the available documentation does not establish one update time for all of either provider’s data. Schedule FRED retrieval according to the selected series and retain vintage information when revisions matter.

  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.

Show three distinct freshness indicators where available:

  • Observation date or period: the time the data describes.
  • Publication time or date: when the provider made the observation or report available.
  • Last retrieved: when your pipeline successfully collected it.

Display the expected source cadence or a clear freshness state as well. If yesterday’s observation is the latest available for a daily series, that is different from a failed retrieval that left the dashboard displaying stale data. Add retry limits, exponential backoff, and alerts for authentication failures, schema changes, and rate or row-limit errors; record failed runs instead of making a stale value look current.

How do you combine observations from different providers safely?

Only combine observations when their measurement definitions support the comparison. Identical commodity names do not establish identical units, geography, grade, delivery point, market type, currency, or timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before drawing a shared chart or calculating a spread, compare each series on these dimensions:

  • Coverage: energy, agriculture, macroeconomic series, or broader commodity market data.
  • Frequency and latency: intraday, daily, weekly, monthly, or irregular report publication, plus any known delivery lag.
  • Historical depth: including whether a provider’s stated history depends on the underlying commodity source.
  • Units and currency: direct comparability or a documented need for conversion.
  • Market definition: location, grade, delivery point, exchange, or national aggregate.
  • Revision behavior: whether you need today’s current history or a point-in-time view.
  • Access model and terms: keys, bulk download, filters, pagination, row limits, and licensing or redistribution conditions.

If a series differs in a material dimension, keep it in a separate panel or label the difference prominently instead of merging it into a single “commodity price.” Where a conversion is defensible, apply it in a reproducible transformation and retain the source values. API availability alone does not establish permission to redistribute data; check the provider’s applicable terms and licensing conditions for your intended use.

What common problems should you plan for?

Most misleading trackers fail at the boundaries between sources: they lose units, mistake a report’s publication time for its observation period, or present a delayed series as if it were live. Design the records and dashboard to make those distinctions visible.

A chart compares unlike prices

Confirm whether the inputs are spot, futures, wholesale report, retail, or index observations and whether the market locations and product definitions align. If they do not, explain the difference or separate the chart. A shared label such as “oil price” is not enough to establish comparability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The unit disappeared during ingestion

Make unit presence a validation rule and retain the unit string supplied by the source. Convert only through an explicit, documented transformation. If the original unit is unknown or absent, do not imply that the observation can be compared safely with a series in a known unit.

The dashboard looks current but is not

Compare the observation period, publication time, and retrieval timestamp. A recent successful API call can still return an older observation; a publication date can describe a report released after the measured period. Use source-specific schedules and visibly flag an overdue retrieval.

Historical values changed

Do not overwrite prior values if the use case depends on reproducibility or what was known at the time. Preserve vintage or revision metadata where available, along with raw responses and retrieval timestamps. A current historical series and a historical snapshot of what was then available answer different questions.

A large EIA history is truncated or rejected

For EIA JSON requests, account for the documented 5,000-row maximum per response. Add date bounds or facets, request pages where supported, or use the bulk-download facility. Remember that bulk download does not require a key, while API calls do.

A key or provider response breaks the scheduled job

Keep credentials outside the browser and monitor authentication failures separately from empty results. Log the request configuration and provider error, apply bounded retries with backoff, and alert on repeated failures or a changed response schema. Do not mark the run successful merely because the job returned a response.

What is a practical build sequence?

A staged build keeps the first version small enough to validate while preserving an architecture that can accommodate more markets later.

  1. Choose one question and one series. Write down the commodity, market definition, unit, intended frequency, and whether current or vintage-aware history matters.
  2. Select the matching provider. Use FRED for relevant economic series, EIA for energy data, USDA MyMarketNews for agricultural reports, or assess Nasdaq Data Link if its commercial coverage better fits the requirement.
  3. Register the series and access method. Record its identifier, dimensions, expected cadence, credentials requirement, and applicable terms. Keep secrets server-side.
  4. Implement the adapter and capture raw responses. Include request parameters and retrieval time, and verify the response’s metadata before transforming values.
  5. Normalize and validate. Retain provenance, separate observation from publication and retrieval times, and flag rather than erase suspicious records.
  6. Build the first chart with context. Display units, source, market, observation period, last retrieval, and any relevant quality or revision status.
  7. Add another source only after the first is auditable. Compare definitions before placing series together, then add source-specific scheduling, failure alerts, and any documented conversions.

This sequence makes the source choice and measurement definition explicit before the tracker acquires the complexity of a multi-provider dashboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a commodity tracker for live trading decisions?

Not on the basis of public availability alone. Confirm that the specific feed’s latency, licensing, market coverage, and delivery terms meet your use case; the daily Nasdaq commodity dataset described here, for example, is not documented as real time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I redistribute prices from a public API in my own app?

An endpoint being accessible or free to query does not by itself grant redistribution rights. Check the provider’s terms for your use, especially if the dashboard will be public, commercial, or will expose raw records.

Should I store converted prices as well as the original values?

You can store both when a conversion is required, but retain the original observation and unit as the audit record. Record the conversion rule and resulting unit so later users can distinguish a provider value from a derived one.

What should I do if a provider has no observation for a date?

First determine whether the source is expected to publish on that date; weekends, irregular reports, and series-specific schedules can create legitimate gaps. Preserve missingness as a status rather than automatically filling it with the previous value.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply. Prices as of November 7, 2026 6:12 am GMT+0530.
