A VPN connection does not automatically mean malicious websites are being blocked. To test the protection, first confirm that your VPN or its companion service has a threat-protection or DNS/domain-filtering feature enabled, then verify that DNS queries use the intended filtering resolver. Finally, open a safe test domain supplied by that service—not a live malware or phishing site—and check the DNS response or policy log as well as the browser result. A blocked test demonstrates that one categorized request was filtered under the policy you tested. It does not prove that every malicious site, unknown threat, download, or device is protected.
What exactly are you testing?
You are testing a filtering policy, not the VPN tunnel by itself. Some VPN products offer malicious-domain blocking through a DNS proxy, threat-protection module, or separate filtering service; others only encrypt traffic and change your apparent IP address. Feature names, supported platforms, and whether the feature is enabled by default vary, so check the provider’s current documentation for the device and account you are using.

A useful test answers a narrow question: did the configured filtering service evaluate and block a domain in the selected malware or phishing category? It should also confirm that your device’s DNS requests actually reached that service. Without the DNS check, a browser result can be misleading because the request may have gone to a public resolver, an operating-system service, or an encrypted-DNS provider that bypasses the VPN policy.
What should you prepare before running the test?
- The exact feature and platform: Find the provider’s documentation for threat protection, malicious-site blocking, DNS filtering, domain filtering, or an equivalent feature. Confirm that it supports your operating system, browser, and VPN connection mode.
- An account or policy with permission to test: Business services may assign a policy to a user, device, group, or location. The test device must be assigned the policy whose category settings you intend to verify.
- A safe vendor test domain: Use a hostname published for configuration testing by the filtering service. Never visit a real malware, exploit, or phishing URL merely to see whether protection reacts.
- A DNS diagnostic tool:
nslookupis available on common desktop systems.digis another option where installed. You need the resolver address and the response code, not just a browser screen. - A way to inspect logs: If the service provides DNS, Gateway, Shield Policy, or security-event logs, keep the relevant entry. It can show which policy handled the request and when.
Disconnect from the VPN before changing settings, then reconnect after configuration is complete. This gives you a clean test of the intended path instead of mixing old resolver information with the new policy.

How do I enable the malicious-site blocking feature?
Open the VPN app or its web administration console and look for a setting described as threat protection, malicious-site blocking, DNS filtering, domain filtering, or a DNS proxy. The exact menu labels differ, so follow the provider’s documented workflow rather than assuming that a normal VPN connection enables filtering.
Consumer or personal VPN app
- Open the app’s security, privacy, or connection settings.
- Turn on the documented malicious-domain or threat-protection option.
- Read whether the option applies to all traffic, only DNS requests, or only selected browsers and platforms.
- Reconnect to the VPN and check for an in-app status indicator or a documented confirmation.
Managed CloudConnexa deployment
OpenVPN’s CloudConnexa documentation requires a DNS proxy and a domain-filtering policy. An administrator must configure the policy, assign it to the test user and device, and then connect that device. The workflow is not equivalent to simply installing an OpenVPN client: the proxy and the policy determine whether the DNS request is evaluated.
Recommended Free Tools
OpenVPN describes the purpose of its check this way: “Use the OpenVPN test domain to verify that the policy blocks a domain categorized as Malware.” Treat that as a policy-validation instruction for the configured CloudConnexa deployment, not as a claim about every OpenVPN-based VPN.
How can I verify that DNS requests use the VPN filter?
Connect to the VPN, open a terminal or Command Prompt, and query a harmless name with the resolver diagnostic tool. Record both the server that answered and the response. The resolver address should match the filtering service’s documentation.
Using nslookup
nslookup example.com
The output normally identifies a “Server” and an “Address.” Compare those values with the provider’s documented DNS path. If the documentation gives a private or service-specific address, that is the value you should expect while connected; do not substitute an address from another VPN.
Using dig
dig example.com
In the answer, note the SERVER line and the status code. A normal lookup often returns NOERROR; a policy block may return REFUSED, depending on the filtering service and category policy.

What OpenVPN documents for CloudConnexa
For the documented CloudConnexa deployment, DNS resolution uses an address in the 100.96.0.0/11 range. That range is specific to the deployment described by OpenVPN. It is not a universal signature for VPN DNS filtering, so do not label another provider as misconfigured simply because it uses a different resolver address.
What Cloudflare Gateway requires
Cloudflare says the device must send DNS queries to Gateway before a Gateway DNS policy test is meaningful. A Gateway policy can be correctly configured and still appear ineffective if the device sends queries directly to another resolver. Verify the route first, then test the category.
Run the lookup once before connecting and once after connecting if you need a baseline. Resolver changes, cached answers, and split-DNS settings can otherwise make two apparently identical tests follow different paths.
Which safe domains can I use?
Use only the test hostname documented for the filtering service you have configured. These names are designed to represent categories without exposing you to live malicious content.
| Filtering service or deployment | Safe test hostname | Category or purpose | Expected evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenVPN CloudConnexa | malware-test-domain.openvpn.com |
Malware-category policy test | The assigned Shield Policy evaluates and blocks the DNS request. |
| Cloudflare Gateway | malware.testcategory.com |
Malware category | A browser block page or a DNS response such as REFUSED, when the policy and routing are correct. |
| Cloudflare Gateway | phishing.testcategory.com |
Phishing category | A browser block page or a policy-related DNS response, subject to the configured category action. |
Do not assume that a hostname listed for one service will work for another. A provider may not recognize the name, may classify it differently, or may require a separate test account or policy assignment.
How do I run the test from start to finish?
- Identify the policy. Write down the filtering feature, category action, test user, test device, and VPN profile you intend to check. This prevents you from testing a different profile than the one you edited.
- Enable the feature. Turn on the provider’s documented DNS proxy, threat-protection module, or domain-filtering policy. Save the configuration and allow enough time for a managed policy to reach the device.
- Connect the VPN. Confirm that the app reports an active connection. If the service has a separate filtering status, verify that as well.
- Check the resolver. Run
nslookup example.comordig example.com. Compare the server address with the provider’s documentation and confirm that DNS is routed through the intended service. - Query the safe test hostname. Use
nslookupordigagainst the service’s published test name. Save the output before opening it in a browser. - Open the hostname in a browser if appropriate. A configured web policy may show a block page. Do not proceed past a warning, download anything, or use a redirection link.
- Check the filtering log. Look for the request, category, action, policy name, test device, and timestamp. A log entry ties the result to the configuration rather than to an unrelated browser error.
- Repeat after any correction. If the request is allowed unexpectedly, fix one setting at a time and run the DNS and hostname checks again.
How should I interpret a blocked result?
A block page, a failed lookup, or a policy response such as REFUSED is consistent with filtering, but the strongest evidence combines the user-visible result with DNS and service-log evidence. Cloudflare documents a block page in a browser or REFUSED from dig as possible outcomes for a blocked category. OpenVPN describes a blocked result as confirmation that the device’s DNS query was evaluated by its Shield Policy.

| Observed result | What it suggests | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| Browser block page and matching policy log | The tested category was blocked by the configured service. | Record the policy, device, category, and time; no broader effectiveness claim follows. |
REFUSED or another documented policy response from the intended resolver |
The DNS filter rejected the category request. | Confirm that the browser uses the same network path and that no alternate resolver is configured. |
| NXDOMAIN, timeout, or a generic browser error | Could be filtering, an ordinary DNS failure, connectivity loss, or a nonexistent name. | Check the resolver address, service log, and provider-specific expected response before calling it a block. |
| The test page loads and the resolver is not the filtering service | The request likely bypassed the intended policy. | Inspect VPN DNS settings, operating-system DNS, browser encrypted DNS, and local network overrides. |
| The test page loads and the intended resolver answered | The category may be allowed, misclassified, unassigned, or unsupported by that policy. | Check category action, policy assignment, DNS proxy status, and the service log. |
A browser result by itself is weaker than a resolver response because browsers can cache pages, use their own encrypted-DNS setting, or display an error generated by a network problem. Capture the command output and the policy event whenever the service makes them available.
What should I check if the test domain loads?
Do not immediately conclude that the VPN’s protection is broken. Work through the configuration in the order below; each check addresses a different way the request can be allowed or bypassed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →1. Confirm the category action
Open the filtering policy and verify that the malware or phishing category is set to block rather than allow, alert, log-only, or inherit a less restrictive rule. Some systems apply the first matching rule, so an earlier allow rule can override a later category block.
2. Confirm policy assignment
Check that the test user, device, group, or location is assigned the policy you edited. OpenVPN specifically lists policy assignment among the checks for its CloudConnexa test. A policy can be correct in the console yet irrelevant to the device making the query.
3. Confirm the DNS proxy or filtering connection
Make sure the DNS proxy is enabled and that the VPN connection is using it. OpenVPN’s workflow depends on the DNS Proxy configuration. If a client falls back to the local router or another resolver during a connection change, the request will not be evaluated by the intended Shield Policy.
4. Look for encrypted-DNS bypass
Browsers and operating systems can use DNS over HTTPS (DoH) or DNS over TLS (DoT). Those encrypted requests may go directly to a resolver outside the VPN’s DNS policy. Temporarily disable the browser or operating-system encrypted-DNS option according to the provider’s troubleshooting instructions, reconnect, and repeat the resolver check; restore the setting afterward if your organization requires it.

5. Clear stale state and retest
Close and reopen the browser, reconnect the VPN, and repeat the lookup. A cached DNS answer can obscure a policy change. If the service has a documented cache flush or policy refresh operation, use that operation rather than repeatedly visiting the hostname.
6. Check logs and time synchronization
Search the filtering log for the exact hostname and a recent timestamp. If no event exists, the request probably did not reach the service or the device is assigned elsewhere. Ensure the device clock is reasonably accurate so events are not hidden outside the time window you are reviewing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How is DNS filtering different from broader malware protection?
DNS filtering controls name-resolution requests and can block selected domains or categories. It is narrower than endpoint security that inspects files, processes, browser content, or network payloads. A VPN tunnel can protect the transport path while a separate DNS service makes the allow-or-block decision; these functions should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Protection approach | Where it operates | What a configuration test can show | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| DNS or domain filtering | Resolver, DNS proxy, or Gateway policy reached by the device | Whether a named domain/category request was handled by the selected policy | That every malicious URL, IP address, download, or unknown threat will be stopped |
| VPN tunnel without a filtering feature | Encrypted connection between the client and VPN service | That the tunnel is connected and traffic follows its routing rules | That malicious domains are categorized or blocked |
| Endpoint or browser security | Device, browser, or security agent | Only the detections and safe-test procedures documented for that product | That a VPN’s DNS policy is working |
| Independent efficacy testing | Controlled test laboratory using defined threat and false-positive scenarios | Comparative results within the laboratory’s methodology and date | That your particular account, device, policy, or network is configured correctly |
Cloudflare describes Gateway DNS filtering as control over DNS queries and selected domains or categories. That description should not be expanded into a promise of comprehensive endpoint malware protection. If you need evidence about detection rates or false positives, consult a formal test such as AV-TEST’s network threat-protection evaluations; a vendor test-domain check is not an independent product score or certification.

A successful test proves that the tested hostname was handled according to the filtering policy in the configuration you examined. It can also show that DNS traffic reached the intended resolver when the resolver output and logs agree.
- It does not prove that every malicious website is blocked.
- It does not prove that newly registered, unknown, or misclassified threats will be detected.
- It does not test file scanning, exploit prevention, ransomware protection, or the safety of a download.
- It does not prove that the same feature is enabled on every device, user profile, browser, or VPN protocol.
- It does not provide a blocking percentage or a comparison between providers.
- It does not replace endpoint security, browser protections, patching, safe browsing habits, or an organization’s incident-response controls.
The result is therefore a configuration check with a defined scope. Repeat it for each important platform or policy assignment, and keep separate evidence for any broader security claim.
Best Value
How can I document and repeat the check?
Create a short record for each test run. Include the date and time, device and operating system, VPN profile, filtering feature, assigned policy, resolver address, exact test hostname, command output, browser result, and log-event identifier if available. Note whether DoH or DoT was enabled, because that setting can change the DNS path.
- Run the ordinary lookup first to establish which resolver answers while connected.
- Run the provider’s safe category hostname through both
nslookupanddigwhen both tools are available. - Compare the response with the service’s documented expected behavior, such as a block page or
REFUSED. - Verify that the policy log names the same device and category.
- After changing a setting, reconnect and repeat the complete sequence instead of relying on a cached browser result.
This record lets you distinguish a policy change from a transient outage and gives an administrator enough information to diagnose assignment, routing, or encrypted-DNS problems without exposing anyone to a real malicious site.
When should I use a formal security test instead?
Use a formal evaluation when you need comparative evidence across products or protection layers. Laboratory programs can include malicious-URL and false-positive scenarios, among other test types, but their methodology, product version, and test date determine what the result means. A single safe test domain is appropriate for checking your own configuration; it is not a substitute for an independent evaluation.
For an everyday VPN deployment, the practical sequence remains: verify the feature, verify DNS routing, use the service’s safe test hostname, inspect the response and log, and troubleshoot bypasses before interpreting the outcome.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I test VPN malware blocking without opening a browser?
Yes. Query the provider’s safe test hostname with nslookup or dig and inspect the status, resolver address, and filtering log. This avoids browser caching and makes it easier to tell a policy response from a page-rendering error.
Why does my VPN show a different DNS address from the one in an example?
Resolver addresses are deployment-specific. The 100.96.0.0/11 range is documented for one CloudConnexa setup, not as a universal VPN standard; compare your address with your own provider’s documentation.
Does a blocked test domain mean downloaded files are safe?
No. A DNS block only shows that a named domain request matched a filtering policy. It does not test file inspection, exploit prevention, or the behavior of content delivered from an allowed domain.
What should I do if encrypted DNS is required by my organization?
Ask the administrator which encrypted-DNS endpoint is approved and whether it is integrated with the VPN filtering policy. Do not disable a mandated control permanently; instead, use the documented test method or a managed profile that routes those queries through the organization’s filter.
