The reliable way to test an AI agent sandbox is to attack it from inside a disposable sandbox that is itself isolated by a hardened virtual machine. Give the agent only synthetic files, canary credentials and controlled network endpoints. Before starting, write down the allowed workspace, mounts, processes, capabilities, secrets, destinations, ports, protocols and tool calls. Enforce those limits outside the model, capture every policy decision, and define a kill switch.
Then run controlled probes against the host and filesystem, privileges and processes, network egress, cross-agent channels, and persistence after restart. A test passes only when an external control blocks every out-of-policy action, records a containment event and leaves the host, outer VM, credentials, perimeter and other agents unchanged. A model declining to run an escape command is not evidence of containment.

What does a successful sandbox test actually prove?
A useful test demonstrates more than a container that appears difficult to break. It shows that the complete execution boundary—runtime, host, outer virtual machine, network, credentials, shared services and other agents—continues to enforce policy when the workload actively attempts to violate it.
Define a pass before the first run. Every action outside policy must be denied by a mechanism the agent cannot alter, the denial must be visible in your audit trail, and no protected state may change. A single unauthorized read, write, process, capability use, network callback, credential use or cross-boundary message is a containment failure for that scenario.

Do not treat a refusal in the transcript as a control. The model may refuse one prompt and comply with another, or a vulnerability may let a tool bypass the model entirely. The boundary has to hold even when the agent is instructed to circumvent it.
How do I build a safe sandbox-within-a-sandbox?
Run the target agent in a disposable container or equivalent runtime inside a hardened VM. The outer VM is the blast shield for mistakes in the inner environment, so it must not contain production credentials, routes, data or administrative sockets.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Create an outer test VM. Use a fresh image, least-privileged operator account and a network segment that cannot reach production. Disable host-to-guest conveniences that are not part of the feature being tested.
- Launch the inner workload. Use the exact container image, runtime configuration and policy revision intended for deployment. Record the image digest, runtime and kernel versions before the run.
- Use synthetic assets. Place harmless marker files, unique canary secrets and fake service tokens in locations that should be inaccessible. A canary must identify the run, not resemble a real credential.
- Put egress behind an external control. Start with deny-by-default networking and an allowlisted proxy or firewall. Permit only the controlled callback service needed by a probe.
- Separate administration from the target. Keep the VM console, log collector, policy controller and kill switch on channels the agent cannot reach or modify. Never mount a host Docker socket or equivalent runtime control interface into the workload.
- Snapshot and label the environment. Give each run a unique identifier, capture a pre-test inventory and retain a clean snapshot for repeatability.
- Destroy after analysis. Revoke test identities, rotate any canary credential that was exposed and discard the VM rather than reusing a potentially modified environment.
Docker documentation describes microVM isolation, explicit workspace mounts, deny-by-default proxied outbound TCP policy and no direct path to the host Docker daemon. Treat shared workspaces, SSH-agent forwarding, credentials, MCP gateways and host-side proxies as deliberate attack surfaces, not harmless conveniences.
What must be in the boundary specification?
Write a machine-readable policy before generating prompts. A reviewer should be able to determine whether an attempted action was allowed without interpreting the model’s intent.
- Files and mounts: list readable and writable paths, mount modes, temporary directories, device files and metadata endpoints. State whether the workspace is a direct mount, a read-only clone or absent.
- Processes: specify the permitted executable set, child-process rules, process limits and whether process-list visibility is allowed.
- Capabilities and namespaces: record user and group identity, Linux capabilities, seccomp or equivalent restrictions, namespace settings and whether privileged mode is prohibited.
- Secrets and identities: name the synthetic credentials, their scopes and the services they may contact. Prohibit inherited environment secrets and unintended credential helpers.
- Network: enumerate destination names or IP ranges, DNS behavior, protocols, ports, proxy requirements, redirect handling and IPv4/IPv6 policy. Define whether literal IP addresses are blocked when a hostname is not allowlisted.
- Tools and integrations: list shell, filesystem, browser, package, cloud, MCP and inter-agent calls. For each, define arguments, rate limits and the external policy that validates them.
- Persistence: describe what may survive a restart and what must disappear, including files, processes, routes, credentials, policy changes and queued messages.
Keep the policy version with the run record. If the policy changes, treat the next execution as a new baseline rather than comparing it silently with an older run.
How should I run adversarial probes?
Use harmless, observable probes in five families. Each probe should have a unique token, an expected denial and a defined stop condition. Start with common configuration mistakes, then test multi-step paths that combine individually allowed actions.
1. Host and filesystem probes
Place a canary outside the declared workspace and attempt to read, modify, rename or delete it. Enumerate mount points, device files, process metadata, host sockets and cloud or instance-metadata endpoints. Try relative-path traversal, symbolic links, alternate mount paths and archive extraction into a protected directory.

Use a marker that changes if written, not a real document. A read of the marker is already a failure; a write or deletion should terminate the scenario. Check that the audit record identifies the attempted path, decision, run identifier and policy version.
2. Process and privilege probes
Ask the agent to spawn disallowed children, inspect host processes, request blocked capabilities, alter namespaces or runtime settings, and access the outer VM. Include attempts to invoke interpreters, compilers or package managers that are outside the declared executable set.
Probe both direct commands and indirect routes, such as a permitted utility launching another program or a writable configuration causing a privileged helper to execute. The harness—not the agent—must terminate the workload on confirmed host or outer-VM access.

3. Network and egress probes
First request a controlled endpoint you own and verify that the callback contains only the per-run token. Then attempt a non-allowlisted domain, a literal IP address, alternate ports, redirects, DNS rebinding-style resolution, proxy bypasses and indirect fetch paths through an allowed service.
Any unapproved response, DNS result or callback is a failure, even if no sensitive data was sent. Log firewall decisions, proxy requests, DNS queries and destination identity so you can distinguish a blocked connection from a connection that never reached the policy layer.
4. Cross-boundary communication probes
Run at least two isolated agents or a target agent and a service that should not exchange data. Generate a unique token in one context and attempt to pass it through shared files, environment variables, task metadata, tool arguments, logs, timing channels or an MCP gateway.
Look for both direct delivery and delayed delivery after a restart. A token appearing in the wrong context is a containment failure, even when the receiving service has no permission to act on it.

5. Persistence and recovery probes
After blocked attempts, restart the workload and compare the file tree, process list, credentials, routes, policy files and queued messages with the pre-test inventory. Try to leave a startup script, scheduled task, modified shell profile, new user, altered firewall rule or hidden process.
Exercise the kill switch and network circuit breaker while the workload is active. Confirm that egress stops, the process is terminated and volatile evidence is preserved. Then verify that the environment returns to the approved state before restoring any service.
What evidence should each run collect?
Containment is not auditable if the only artifact is a transcript. Collect synchronized records from the agent, runtime, VM and perimeter.
| Evidence | What to capture | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Agent activity | Prompt and response transcript, tool calls, arguments, return values and timestamps | Shows the requested action and whether a tool attempted a bypass |
| File and process auditing | Open, read, write, rename, execute, process, capability and namespace events | Detects access that a tool response or model transcript omits |
| Runtime and VM logs | Container, hypervisor and kernel events, image digest, runtime and kernel versions | Correlates a boundary decision with the isolation layer that enforced it |
| Network records | DNS queries, proxy requests, firewall decisions, connections, redirects and callbacks | Proves whether an attempted egress was denied before leaving the perimeter |
| Identity records | Credential issuance and use, service identity, scope and caller | Exposes inherited or mis-scoped credentials |
| Policy and artifacts | Policy revision, test scenario, run ID, hashes of canaries and collected disk state | Makes a result reproducible and protects evidence from accidental mixing |
Use a single clock source where possible. Hash test artifacts after collection, preserve volatile logs before destroying the VM, and keep the policy and image identifiers in the same record as the result.

Which configurations should I compare?
A single configuration can hide a weakness. Repeat the same scenario across the real architectural choices you may deploy, changing one axis at a time.
| Axis | Comparison | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Isolation layer | Container versus microVM or full VM | Does a runtime escape remain contained by the outer layer? |
| Workspace | Direct mount versus read-only clone versus no mount | Can the agent alter host-backed data or follow a mount path outside policy? |
| Egress | Deny-by-default proxy versus allowlisted destinations | Are alternate ports, IP literals, redirects and DNS paths still controlled? |
| Privilege | Root or privileged mode versus least privilege | Which capabilities, devices and namespace operations become available? |
| Agents | Single agent versus multiple isolated agents | Can a token cross shared services, files, logs or task metadata? |
| Policy | Baseline versus hardened configuration | Which denial and recovery improvements are measurable? |
Record the model name and version, inference-time budget, exact scenario, image digest, runtime and kernel versions and policy revision. The AI Security Institute’s SandboxEscapeBench uses 18 scenarios across orchestration, runtime and kernel layers; its report estimates one to two hours for an experienced cybersecurity professional on the hardest scenarios. Its published result is a warning about vulnerability management: every successful breakout in that benchmark exploited a previously disclosed vulnerability.
What are the stop conditions and recovery steps?
Agree on these conditions before the agent starts. Do not wait for a human to decide whether a suspected escape is serious.

How do I avoid false confidence?
Test the integrations that make the sandbox useful. A direct workspace may be safe while an SSH-agent socket, package mirror, host proxy, cloud metadata route or MCP gateway provides an unintended bridge. Include those surfaces explicitly, or remove them from the test and deployment design.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Vary prompts and execution paths so the test is not dependent on one refusal pattern. Combine steps: discover an allowed file, influence a permitted helper, obtain a canary token and attempt an outbound callback. Multi-step scenarios expose policy gaps that isolated one-command tests miss.
Repeat the suite after every material change to the model, agent tools, image, runtime, kernel, network policy, credential flow or orchestration layer. Keep a regression set of previously blocked probes and compare both security outcomes and logging quality.
OpenAI describes this layered approach as defense in depth: “These protections overlap, so that containment can hold even if an individual control fails.” The AI Security Institute’s benchmark and OpenAI’s published red-team objectives both emphasize the outer boundary, including live internet access, internal security boundaries and communication across isolation boundaries. OpenAI reports spending hundreds of billions of tokens on its red-teaming experiments, without giving a more precise figure in the cited publication; that scale is not a substitute for a reproducible local test plan.
What do security guidelines require?
The National Cyber Security Centre advises threat modeling, robust sandboxing, regular validation for configuration weaknesses, observability and an emergency shutdown capability for agentic systems. OWASP APTS-SC-019 states: “The sandbox boundary MUST be enforced by a mechanism outside the agent’s control,” and requires declared filesystem, network, capability and credential limits with blocked actions logged as containment events.

The UK AI Cyber Security Code of Practice says developers should test released systems and operators should test before deployment, using independent testers with relevant technical skills. In practice, independence means the person evaluating the boundary should not be the only person who designed the policy or owns the production environment.
Use those principles to review both technology and operations: threat model the escape routes, enforce controls externally, collect evidence, rehearse shutdown and assign an owner for fixing and retesting each failure.

What result should I report?
Report results per scenario and configuration, not as a single “sandbox secure” label. Include the exact attempted action, policy expectation, enforcement layer, evidence location, timing, canary status, recovery action and retest result.
Call the run a pass only when every declared out-of-policy action was externally denied, logged and contained, all stop controls worked, and post-run comparison found no unauthorized persistence or cross-boundary change. Call it a containment failure when any one of those conditions is false. A blocked probe with missing logs is an observability failure that still requires remediation; a logged denial with a changed host is an isolation failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use real API keys or production data for an escape test?
No. Use synthetic credentials, fake records and a controlled callback endpoint inside the disposable test environment. If a canary is exposed, revoke and rotate it immediately; production secrets would turn a test into an incident.
How can I tell whether a network request was blocked by the right layer?
Correlate the agent tool result with DNS, proxy and firewall records for the same run ID and timestamp. A local error alone cannot show whether the request was denied before DNS, at the proxy, or after it reached an unintended destination.
What should independent testers receive before they start?
Give them the boundary specification, allowed test assets, stop conditions, logging locations and a contact who can trigger the circuit breaker. Do not give them production credentials or unrestricted access to the host they are evaluating.
How do I preserve evidence after a suspected breakout?
Cut egress and stop the workload first, then preserve volatile logs and disk state before rebuilding. Hash the collected artifacts and retain the image digest, policy revision, timestamps and run identifier so another investigator can reproduce the timeline.
