Test an AI-generated Unreal Engine game in three separate tracks: automated stability checks for maps, assets, Blueprints, and gameplay; controlled server/client tests for authority and exploit scenarios; and a project-specific safety test for generated or user-submitted content. Unreal Engine’s Automation Test Framework can run unit, feature, and content-stress tests, while its network-testing tools support dedicated servers, multiple clients, traffic analysis, and multi-session orchestration. Those features can expose many failures, but they do not constitute an AI-content classifier or a complete security review. Define how your game generates content and what your threat and safety policies are before choosing assertions.
This guide shows a repeatable workflow using Epic’s documented Unreal Engine 5.8 automation and network-testing features, then adds clearly labeled project-planning practices for AI-specific crashes, exploits, and unsafe material.

What can Unreal’s documented tests prove about an AI-generated game?
They can verify specified conditions and stress large bodies of project content, but no single run proves that every runtime path is crash-free, exploit-free, or safe. Epic describes the Automation Test Framework as supporting automated unit, feature, and content-stress testing to improve stability. Its examples include loading maps and loading and compiling Blueprints, which are useful ways to expose invalid or unstable generated content. See Epic’s Automation Test Framework documentation.
Use three distinct coverage goals:
- Stability: Does the generated project load, compile, initialize, and execute the intended gameplay paths without crashes or fatal errors?
- Security: Does the server reject unauthorized or malformed requests, and does replicated state remain under the correct authority?
- Safety: Does generated or user-provided content conform to the project’s prohibited-content rules, with predictable blocking or escalation?
Keep the evidence separate. A passing content-stress test is not a security certification, and a clean network trace is not proof that an exploit is impossible. Likewise, an automation assertion cannot decide whether an AI-generated image, dialogue line, model, or level violates a policy that your team has not defined.

How should I define the AI generation boundary before testing?
Write down when generation occurs and what inputs can influence it. The controls and test fixtures differ substantially between a build created offline by developers, runtime generation from trusted data, and generation triggered by player prompts or uploaded assets.
Classify the generation path
- Offline or build-time generation: Preserve the generation inputs and the resulting build identifier so a failed test can be reproduced from the same artifact.
- Runtime generation from trusted inputs: Test generation failure, fallback behavior, memory growth, timeout handling, and whether generated objects can cross an authority boundary.
- User-prompted or user-uploaded generation: Add input validation, abuse cases, moderation decisions, review queues, and audit records to the test plan.
Define the safety policy in testable terms
List prohibited and restricted categories, the expected response for each category, and who can override a decision. For example, a policy might require blocking a generated asset, replacing it with a safe fallback, or sending it for human review. The exact categories and enforcement points are product decisions; Unreal’s general automation documentation does not prescribe them.

Record the model or generation configuration, prompt or input fixture, random seed when available, generated asset identifiers, Unreal build, platform, and test-run identifier. This is a reproducibility practice for your pipeline, not a built-in Unreal feature. Without those records, a crash or unsafe output may be impossible to regenerate after the content changes.
How do I build repeatable crash and stability tests?
Start with a project-owned test set that covers generated maps, assets, Blueprints, and the gameplay routes that consume them. Automation tests should establish their own state, avoid assuming what the Editor or game was doing beforehand, and remove files or temporary objects they create. Epic’s framework guidance emphasizes this isolation and cleanup approach.
1. Test the smallest units first
Use unit tests for deterministic functions such as generated-data validation, bounds checks, serialization, and permission calculations. A unit test should fail on a specific condition and identify the input that caused it. Keep generation itself outside the assertion when possible: feed the test a saved fixture so a failure does not disappear because a model produced a different result on the next run.
2. Add gameplay feature tests
Functional or feature tests should exercise player-visible behavior: spawning a generated actor, entering a generated level, interacting with an AI-created object, saving state, and transitioning to another map. Assert outcomes such as a required actor existing, a state value changing once, or a transition completing within the project’s defined timeout. Include both the normal path and the fallback path used when generation fails.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Run content-stress passes
Epic specifically cites loading all maps and loading and compiling all Blueprints as content-stress examples. Adapt those checks to your generated corpus:

- Enumerate every generated map and load it in an isolated test run.
- Load and compile every generated Blueprint, recording the asset name and compiler output.
- Instantiate generated assets in the smallest scene that exercises their construction and teardown.
- Repeat level loads and unloads to expose lifecycle errors that a single visit can miss.
- Include the largest supported generated set, not only a hand-picked showcase level.
The final three checks are recommended project coverage, not an Epic-mandated list. They are useful because generated content often fails at boundaries: construction scripts, references to deleted assets, oversized data, invalid collision, or cleanup after a transition.
4. Make every test resettable
Reset generated state between cases. Remove temporary files, destroy spawned actors, restore configuration values, and return the world to a known state. A test that passes only after another test has run is a false signal and will be especially difficult to diagnose in continuous integration.
Where can I run Unreal automation tests, and how do I export results?
Epic documents running tests in the Editor’s Test Automation interface, through instances connected to Session Frontend, in Unreal Frontend, and from the command line. Command-line runs are the most convenient foundation for repeatable build validation because they can be scripted and their reports exported. See Run Automation Tests in Unreal Engine.
Editor and connected-session runs
Use the Editor while developing a test or investigating a failure. The Test Automation interface lets you select the relevant tests and inspect assertion output. Session Frontend and Unreal Frontend are useful when the test must run against a separate instance or a managed session rather than the currently edited world.
Command-line runs
Epic’s examples use the Automation RunTest command and the -ReportExportPath option. A project’s exact executable, map, configuration, and quoting depend on its build scripts, so keep those values in the project’s checked-in test wrapper rather than copying an unverified one-liner into documentation.
Automation RunTest <TestNameOrFilter> -ReportExportPath=<ReportDirectory>
Use a stable report directory per build and archive the exported report with logs, the generated-content manifest, and the build identifier. Configure filters and test naming so a failed report identifies the map, asset, Blueprint, or gameplay feature involved; Epic’s configuration guidance is available in Configure Automation Tests in Unreal Engine.
What to capture for a crash
- The exact test name and generated-content identifier.
- Unreal version, target platform, build configuration, and map.
- Automation report, log, call stack or crash report, and the last successful assertion.
- The generation input and resulting artifact needed to reproduce the case.
- Whether the failure occurred during load, compile, spawn, interaction, save, transition, or teardown.
How should I organize a crash-test matrix?
Use a matrix that ties each failure mode to a test scope and observable evidence. The following structure uses the capabilities Epic documents while leaving project-specific checks explicit.

Do not treat a green row as universal coverage. Each row covers the path it actually exercises; add a new test when a crash occurs in a path the matrix does not touch.
How do I test multiplayer behavior and suspected exploits?
Translate the threat model into server-side assertions, then run those assertions in controlled server/client sessions. Decide which machine is authoritative for each permission, inventory change, damage event, spawn, save operation, and generated-content request. The test should attempt the invalid action from the client and verify the server rejects it or produces the defined safe response.
Choose a network topology
Epic’s networked-game testing guide describes setting the number of players and running multiple Play windows, as well as launching a separate dedicated server. Start with the smallest topology that can expose the issue, then repeat it with the production-relevant topology.
- Single instance: Useful for local gameplay and deterministic feature checks, but it cannot establish client/server authority.
- Multiple Play windows: Useful for quick replication and interaction checks during development.
- Dedicated server plus clients: Preferable when the exploit depends on server authority, connection lifecycle, or a server-only rule.
Turn exploit ideas into assertions
For each suspected exploit, specify the actor, request, precondition, expected server decision, and observable result. Examples include a client attempting to modify another player’s inventory, submitting a value outside the legal range, invoking an RPC without the required permission, replaying a completed transaction, or requesting an asset it should not receive. These are test-planning examples, not an official Epic exploit checklist.
Assert both the immediate response and the persisted state. A rejected request that still changes a replicated property or database record is a failure even if the client receives an error message. Include malformed, duplicated, delayed, and out-of-order requests when the protocol permits them, and keep the test data isolated so a failed security case cannot contaminate later cases.
Inspect traffic without confusing inspection with proof
Epic’s network-testing documentation describes Networking Insights as a network-traffic analysis component in Unreal Insights. The same guide describes the legacy Network Profiler, which provides a higher-level view of bandwidth and individual Actors, Properties, or RPCs. Use these tools to investigate unexpected traffic, replication volume, and the sequence around a failure. Traffic inspection diagnoses behavior; it does not prove that an exploit is impossible.
Use Gauntlet for repeatable multi-session runs
Gauntlet can launch multiple sessions, such as a server and clients, and manage the run so the results can be validated. See Gauntlet Automation Framework in Unreal Engine. Put the scenario setup, client actions, expected server assertions, timeout, and cleanup in a repeatable harness. Preserve the session logs and any network traces alongside the automation report.

Account for the multi-instance functional-test limitation
Epic explicitly documents that “Setting up a functional test that runs across multiple instances, such as both the Client and the Server, is not currently supported.” This means you should not present one functional test as complete client/server replication verification. Use separate coordinated sessions, Gauntlet, or another project-owned harness for cross-instance assertions, and document which side produced each result.

How can I test AI-generated content for unsafe material?
Define the content policy and enforcement architecture first, then test generated outputs and every input path against that policy. The Unreal documentation covered here does not describe an AI moderation system, content classifier, or universal unsafe-content test. A safe test plan therefore belongs to the project’s product-safety and moderation design, not to generic automation alone.
Test the complete content lifecycle
- Input: Submit allowed, disallowed, ambiguous, and adversarial prompts or assets through every interface players can use.
- Generation: Verify that the generation service, plugin, or runtime code handles refusals, timeouts, malformed responses, oversized outputs, and unavailable dependencies.
- Ingestion: Check that generated textures, meshes, audio, dialogue, scripts, and metadata are validated before entering the game or being shared.
- Presentation: Confirm that blocked or quarantined content cannot appear through cached files, replication, replay, screenshots, or alternate UI paths.
- Escalation: Verify the expected fallback, rejection message, review queue, audit record, and operator notification for each policy category.
Separate automated checks from human judgment
Automated assertions can verify labels, routing, block states, access permissions, and that a prohibited fixture never reaches a specified surface. They cannot, by themselves, establish that a policy is complete or that a classifier understands every context. Use a reviewed evaluation set for ambiguous cases and record the policy version and reviewer decision with the result.
Test non-text outputs
If the game generates images, 3D assets, animation, audio, or code, test each medium separately. A text-only check will not detect an unsafe texture or mesh, and a visual review will not detect a dangerous script or hidden metadata. Include transformations such as cropping, recoloring, re-encoding, attachment to a different actor, and display through a different UI path when those operations are available in the product.
Keep policy claims appropriately scoped
Do not claim that Unreal’s Automation Test Framework makes content safe, and do not name legal requirements or classifier accuracy without project-specific authority and evidence. State which policy version, input corpus, enforcement point, and review process the test covers.

What is the most useful end-to-end workflow?
Run the following sequence whenever a new generated build or content batch is introduced.
- Freeze inputs and artifacts. Save the generation configuration, prompts or fixtures, generated-content manifest, Unreal version, platform, and build identifier.
- Validate cheap failures first. Run unit checks for generated data, references, ranges, permissions, and serialization.
- Run content stress. Load all generated maps and load and compile all generated Blueprints, then inspect the report for the first failing asset.
- Exercise gameplay features. Spawn and interact with generated content, save state, transition levels, and verify fallback behavior.
- Run network scenarios. Launch the required server/client topology, execute valid and invalid requests, and assert authority and persisted state.
- Inspect network evidence. Use Networking Insights or the Network Profiler to investigate unexpected replication, RPCs, or bandwidth changes.
- Run safety fixtures. Test allowed, prohibited, ambiguous, malformed, and adversarial inputs across every generation and presentation path.
- Review and triage. Classify each failure as stability, network/security, safety, or infrastructure; retain the smallest reproducible case and assign an owner.
- Re-run after the fix. Run the original failing case plus the surrounding regression set, not only the single assertion that changed.
How do I choose between the available Unreal testing approaches?
Choose by the failure mode, not by the tool’s name. The approaches complement one another.
Best Value
| Approach | Best fit | Execution location | Evidence | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unit automation | Deterministic functions and generated-data rules | Editor or command line | Assertions, logs, exported report | Does not exercise full runtime integration |
| Feature or functional testing | Gameplay behavior and state transitions | Editor or managed session | Gameplay assertions and logs | A single functional test cannot span client and server instances in the documented setup |
| Content-stress testing | Large sets of maps and Blueprints | Editor, connected session, Unreal Frontend, or command line | Load/compile results and reports | Stresses specified content paths; it does not prove every runtime path is safe |
| Dedicated server/client sessions | Authority, replication, permissions, and invalid requests | Multiple Play windows or separate dedicated server | Server/client logs, assertions, traces | Requires a project-owned threat model and assertions |
| Networking Insights or Network Profiler | Traffic and replication diagnosis | Networked test sessions | Traffic and actor/property/RPC views | Diagnostic evidence, not exploit assurance |
| Gauntlet | Repeatable multi-session orchestration | Managed server/client sessions | Session results and logs | Must be configured with the scenario’s own pass/fail assertions |
What should I do when a test fails?
Preserve the first reproducible failure before changing generated content or rerunning a broad suite. The fastest triage path is to identify the phase, reduce the content set, and rerun with the same artifact.
- Crash during load or compile: isolate the map, Blueprint, or referenced asset; rerun the smallest content-stress case.
- Crash during spawn or teardown: compare construction and destruction order, then run the feature test repeatedly with state reset.
- Client/server disagreement: identify which side accepted the state change, capture the relevant RPC or property traffic, and repeat with a dedicated server.
- Unexpected client permission: turn the request into a regression assertion that checks server authority and persisted state.
- Unsafe output appears: save the exact input and artifact, identify the first enforcement point that failed, quarantine the fixture, and test every alternate presentation path.
- Flaky result: check for leaked files, actors, sessions, random seeds, timing assumptions, and external generation dependencies before lowering a timeout or ignoring the failure.
Close the loop by adding the minimized case to the permanent regression set. A fix that is not represented by a repeatable test can be undone by the next generation batch.

Can I run Unreal automation in continuous integration without opening the Editor?
Epic documents command-line automation runs and report export, so a build pipeline can invoke the project’s test wrapper and archive its reports. The executable, map, configuration, and quoting are project-specific; keep those details in version-controlled build scripts rather than assuming one universal command.
Does Networking Insights tell me whether a player is cheating?
No. It helps you inspect network traffic and diagnose actors, properties, RPCs, and bandwidth. You still need server-authority assertions that attempt the suspected invalid action and verify the resulting state.
Should safety tests use real player prompts?
Use a controlled, versioned fixture set for routine regression tests, including representative allowed, prohibited, ambiguous, malformed, and adversarial inputs. Real submissions can be valuable for incident analysis, but they should be handled under your privacy, retention, and moderation procedures rather than copied indiscriminately into automated builds.
How do I know whether a flaky crash is caused by generation or Unreal gameplay code?
Rerun the same frozen artifact and input first. If it reproduces, reduce the case through content-stress and feature tests; if it disappears when the artifact is frozen, investigate nondeterministic generation, external dependencies, timing, or state leakage before changing gameplay code.
