An AI company’s valuation is supported by revenue only when its price can be tied to durable, repeatable sales and the economics of delivering those sales. Start with a clearly dated multiple—enterprise value (or a private round’s post-money valuation) divided by LTM revenue, forward revenue, ARR or a labeled run rate—then test growth, retention, margins after compute costs, cash generation, capital needs and disclosure quality.
A spectacular multiple can be rational if revenue is compounding quickly and efficiently. A seemingly modest multiple can still overstate value when sales are one-off, concentrated, expensive to serve or based on an annualized pace rather than revenue actually earned.

What does it mean for an AI valuation to be “supported” by revenue?
Support means that a defensible share of the valuation is explained by existing or near-term revenue under realistic assumptions. It does not mean that one sector multiple proves a company is fairly priced. Investors are paying for a stream of future cash flows, so current revenue is the starting anchor while growth, margins, retention and risk determine how much that anchor can expand.
Separate two ideas throughout your analysis:
- Current-revenue value: what the business is worth if a reasonable multiple is applied to a clearly defined, sustainable revenue measure.
- Option value: the additional value assigned to products not yet commercialized, new markets, technical breakthroughs or much higher future margins.
A high valuation may include substantial option value. That is not automatically wrong, but it must be stated as an assumption rather than presented as if today’s sales already justify the entire price.

How do you calculate an AI company’s revenue multiple?
Use the numerator and denominator from the same date and label both precisely. The basic formulas are:
- EV ÷ LTM revenue (last-twelve-month revenue)
- EV ÷ forward revenue (a forecast, which must be identified as such)
- EV ÷ ARR (annual recurring revenue)
- Post-money valuation ÷ stated ARR for a private financing round
Enterprise value (EV) generally reflects equity value adjusted for debt and cash. A private company often has only a reported post-money valuation, which is not identical to EV. Do not quietly substitute one for the other.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWrite the calculation with its date, currency and source. For example: “Post-money valuation at the March 2026 round ÷ company-stated ARR at March 2026.” Never divide a current valuation by an old revenue period and call the result current.
Which revenue denominator should you use?
| Measure | What it represents | Best use | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| LTM revenue | Revenue recognized during the latest 12 months | Historical comparison, especially for public companies | Can lag a rapidly changing business |
| Forward revenue | Expected revenue for a future period | High-growth companies where forecasts are credible | Depends on forecast accuracy and assumptions |
| ARR | Annualized recurring contract value | Subscription businesses with recurring contracts | Not audited revenue; may exclude usage volatility or implementation work |
| Run rate | A recent revenue pace annualized | Early businesses with limited history | Can exaggerate sales if the recent month was unusually strong |
Houlihan Lokey’s 2025 generative-AI benchmarking work lists EV/ARR and EV/revenue as useful metrics, while noting that some private-company figures use ARR as a proxy for revenue. That proxy should remain visible in your wording and spreadsheet.
Is ARR the same as revenue, and is a run rate reliable?
No. ARR is recurring annual contract value, while reported revenue is the amount earned under accounting rules during the period. A run rate simply annualizes a recent pace. Neither ARR nor a run rate should be presented as audited historical revenue.
How to label each figure
- Call a figure company-stated ARR when management provides it.
- Call it a run rate when you annualize a month, quarter or other short period; show the underlying period and arithmetic.
- Call it reported revenue only when it comes from the company’s financial statements or an equivalent filing.
- Call it an estimate when a press report or analyst infers it.
For usage-priced AI, ARR can be especially fragile: a customer’s prompt volume may fall, a contract may contain minimums, or consumption may be recognized as usage occurs. Ask for an ARR bridge showing opening ARR, new business, expansion, contraction and churn.

How do you judge the quality of an AI company’s revenue?
Revenue quality determines whether a multiple can endure. Examine the contract structure and customer behavior, not just the headline total.
Recurring versus one-off sales
Separate subscriptions, committed usage and renewals from implementation, consulting, hardware, licensing deals and other one-time services. A services-heavy quarter can make growth look stronger while producing less predictable future revenue. If the company combines categories, request the split or mark the recurring portion as unverified.
Retention and expansion
Net revenue retention (NRR) shows whether an existing customer cohort spends more or less over time after expansion, contraction and churn. High NRR can support a premium because growth compounds inside the installed base; low NRR means the company must replace lost business continually. Check logo churn separately: a large account can mask many smaller cancellations in a dollar-based NRR figure.
Customer concentration
Identify the percentage of revenue generated by the largest customer and the top five or ten. Concentration raises renewal and negotiating risk, particularly when a single cloud partner, model distributor or government contract is involved. Test valuation sensitivity to losing the largest account rather than assuming every customer is interchangeable.

Diversified companies may report total cloud, software or services sales without isolating AI. Do not convert user counts, product launches or adoption claims into an AI-revenue number. Use the disclosed total as a proxy, state that it is a proxy, and avoid comparing it with a pure-play AI company’s revenue as if the definitions matched.
Backlog and contracted demand
Remaining performance obligations, signed minimum-spend contracts and backlog can indicate visibility, but they are not the same as recognized revenue. Check cancellation rights, delivery obligations and the period over which the commitments will be recognized.

How should growth affect the multiple?
Growth supports a higher multiple only when it is repeatable and economically productive. Compare year-over-year and sequential growth using matching periods, then test whether retention, pricing and customer additions explain the change.
Growth checks
- Use the same currency and fiscal periods; adjust for acquisitions, divestitures and foreign-exchange effects where disclosed.
- Separate organic growth from a newly acquired revenue stream.
- Compare bookings or remaining commitments with recognized revenue to detect pull-forward.
- Ask whether growth came from price, volume, a single large contract or broader adoption.
- Compare growth with NRR and logo churn; growth without retention may be purchased growth.
Fast sales that require disproportionate inference spending may destroy value. A slower business with strong retention, high margins and positive cash flow can be worth more than a faster business that must repeatedly raise capital.

What economics show whether AI revenue creates value?
Read the income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow statement and footnotes together. The 2026 comparison framework from iTechGuides emphasizes that revenue growth alone does not show how much investment is required or how much cash is retained.
Gross margin after compute
Include inference, hosting, model licenses, data processing and other costs required to serve customers. If management reports a “software” gross margin that excludes material AI-serving costs, calculate a second margin that includes them. Watch whether margin improves with scale or deteriorates as usage rises.
Operating margin and cash flow
Operating margin reveals the cost of research, sales and administration after gross profit. Operating cash flow shows whether accounting revenue is turning into cash after working-capital movements. Reconcile adjusted EBITDA or other non-GAAP measures with GAAP results and include stock-based compensation as an economic cost because it dilutes existing owners.
Capital expenditure and capacity commitments
Infrastructure-heavy companies may need to purchase or reserve GPUs, data-center capacity and networking equipment before customers pay. Review capital expenditure, leases, purchase commitments and debt maturities. A business can report positive operating cash flow while consuming large amounts of cash through capital spending.

Funding runway
Estimate how long cash lasts under the current burn rate and under a downside case with slower growth or higher inference prices. A valuation that requires another large financing soon is exposed to dilution and a weaker negotiating position.
Which companies make fair comparables?
Build peer groups by business model and AI exposure. Foundation-model providers, AI infrastructure vendors, vertical applications, cloud platforms and diversified technology companies have different margins, capital intensity, customer contracts and risks. A lower EV/revenue multiple is not automatically cheaper.
| Published benchmark | Metric | Value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bessemer Venture Partners Cloud 100, 2025 | Average ARR multiple | 20x | Cohort average, not a universal fair-value threshold |
| Bessemer Venture Partners AI companies, 2025 | Average ARR multiple | 24x | Higher than the cohort’s non-AI average, with business-model differences still material |
| Bessemer Venture Partners non-AI companies, 2025 | Average ARR multiple | 19x | Useful as context for the same cohort, not a direct valuation rule |
| Houlihan Lokey private-company snapshot, 2025 | Implied ARR multiple for Perplexity | 120x | Estimated data and a post-money valuation proxy; dated benchmark |
| Houlihan Lokey private-company snapshot, 2025 | Implied ARR multiple for OpenAI | 41.67x | Estimated data and a post-money valuation proxy; dated benchmark |
Bessemer reported that the 20x Cloud 100 average in 2025 was 41% below the 2023 peak. The 24x AI and 19x non-AI figures are averages across cohorts, so they provide context rather than a pass-or-fail test for an individual company.
Houlihan Lokey also identifies revenue, ARR, average revenue per user (ARPU), monthly active users (MAU), prompts per user, ARR per full-time employee, gross margin, burn, capex, EV/ARR, EV/revenue and EV/MAU as useful generative-AI metrics. Use only the metrics that match the company’s model; MAU is informative for a consumer product but not a substitute for contracted revenue in enterprise software.

What does OpenAI’s published growth show—and what does it not show?
OpenAI wrote, “Adoption drives revenue, and revenue funds the next wave of compute and innovation.” In a 2026 company article, it reported ARR of $2 billion in 2023, $6 billion in 2024 and more than $20 billion in 2025, and said compute capacity grew from 0.2 gigawatts in 2023 to about 1.9 gigawatts in 2025.
| Year | Company-stated ARR | Company-stated compute capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | $2 billion | 0.2 GW |
| 2024 | $6 billion | Not stated for this year in the cited article |
| 2025 | More than $20 billion | About 1.9 GW |
These are company-stated ARR figures, not independently audited historical revenue. They demonstrate the scale and pace of the company’s reported commercial expansion, but they do not by themselves establish gross margin, free cash flow, customer concentration or the amount of valuation supported by current economics. The compute increase also shows why capacity commitments and funding needs belong in the valuation analysis.
Best Value
How do you separate current support from option value?
Start with a base case that uses current or near-term revenue and a defensible multiple for comparable businesses. Then build explicit upside and downside cases instead of hiding future breakthroughs inside the base multiple.
Build a three-case model
- Base case: use disclosed recurring revenue, realistic growth, stable or improving gross margin after compute and a funding plan that does not assume effortless access to capital.
- Upside case: specify the new products, customers, prices or technical improvements required to reach the higher revenue and margin assumptions. Treat the resulting value above the base case as option value.
- Downside case: reduce growth, increase inference cost, raise churn, delay product launches and include a financing round or additional capex if the company would need one.
For each case, calculate the revenue needed to reach the valuation at the selected multiple. If the required growth or margin is far above any disclosed operating evidence, the valuation depends mostly on execution that has not yet occurred.

What is a practical step-by-step valuation test?
- Fix the valuation date. Record the enterprise value or private round post-money valuation, currency and whether the figure is a headline estimate.
- Choose one denominator. Select LTM revenue, forward revenue, ARR or run rate and write its period beside the number.
- Calculate the multiple. Divide the numerator by the denominator and preserve the exact definition, such as “post-money ÷ stated ARR.”
- Reconcile the revenue. Separate recurring, usage, services and one-time items; identify company-reported figures, estimates and proxies.
- Measure growth. Compare matching year-over-year and sequential periods and adjust for acquisitions, currency and unusual contracts.
- Test retention. Review NRR, logo churn, renewal rates, expansion and customer concentration.
- Rebuild gross margin. Include inference, hosting, model and data costs that are necessary to deliver the product.
- Trace the cash. Check operating cash flow, capex, leases, working capital, debt maturities and stock-based compensation.
- Select aligned peers. Match business model, AI exposure, maturity, accounting definitions and valuation dates.
- Model scenarios. Show what growth, margin and financing assumptions are required for the valuation to make sense, including a downside case.
Which red flags can make a low multiple misleading?
- Revenue is mostly non-recurring: a project spike will not support a subscription-style multiple.
- ARR is a run rate: annualizing one unusually strong month can overstate durable demand.
- One customer dominates: a renewal loss can erase the apparent discount.
- Compute costs are excluded: reported software margins may not reflect the cost of inference.
- Adjusted profit omits dilution: stock-based compensation transfers value from existing shareholders.
- Growth is bought with cash: heavy sales incentives, required capacity reservations or acquisitions may make growth uneconomic.
- Definitions change: a company may broaden ARR, add usage commitments or alter customer counts between periods.
- Valuation and revenue dates differ: a current price divided by stale revenue produces a false discount.
How often should the analysis be refreshed?
Refresh public-market EV multiples when share prices, debt or cash change materially, and refresh private-company analyses whenever a financing, major contract, acquisition or updated ARR figure appears. Keep a dated record of every denominator so a later comparison does not mix an old estimate with a new valuation.
Private-company values and ARR can be estimated, prorated, company-stated or based on post-money valuation rather than audited EV. Public-market multiples also move daily. The cited benchmarks therefore provide dated context, not a guaranteed outcome or a universal fair multiple.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use revenue or ARR for a usage-based AI company?
Use reported revenue when it is available, then show ARR separately if contracts contain recurring commitments. For mostly metered usage, disclose the period used to annualize consumption and test how the multiple changes if usage returns to a normal month.
How can I value an AI company that has no meaningful revenue yet?
A revenue multiple is not informative when the denominator is immaterial. Describe the valuation as venture or option value and focus on paid pilots, conversion evidence, unit-cost trends, financing needs and milestones that would create measurable revenue.

Only if the agreement creates enforceable, economically attractive demand. Check minimum purchases, pricing, termination rights, exclusivity and recognition timing; an announcement without contracted revenue should not be added to the denominator.
How should acquisitions affect an AI company’s growth rate?
Show organic growth separately from acquired revenue and identify the acquisition date. Recalculate the multiple on a pro forma period only when the added revenue and related costs are clearly disclosed.
