An AI agent has meaningful access to your bank account only if it can use an accepted credential, OAuth or API token, authenticated session, or delegated tool to reach the bank or a connected financial service. To check, inspect the agent’s integrations, permissions, credentials and logs, then compare what you find with your bank’s linked-app or third-party-access controls. An agent discussing your finances does not, by itself, show that it can see your live account.
What counts as an AI agent having access to a bank account?
Access means the agent or a service it can operate has a route to bank data or actions that is authorized by the bank, a financial-data provider, or an authenticated user session. The important evidence is an authorization artifact or activity record—not how confidently the agent talks about money.

That route might be a bank-approved API connection, an OAuth grant, an API key, a stored password, a refresh token, a service-account credential, or a browser session that is already signed in. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) includes API keys, OAuth grants and authenticated sessions among agent credentials. An integration may also give an agent access indirectly: for example, the agent can call a connected tool that retrieves account data on its behalf.
Separate possible access into two questions: can it read account information, and can it change anything? A connection that can retrieve a balance or transactions is different from one that can initiate payments, move money, add a payee or administer credentials. The agent’s tool description alone is not enough; check the permissions actually granted and the actions it can invoke.

How can I check whether an AI app is connected to my bank?
Audit both sides of the connection: the agent or service that might hold the credential, and the bank account that may have granted access. A bank’s connected-app list can reveal a third party even when the agent’s settings are unclear; agent-side settings and logs can reveal access that is indirect or not obvious in a bank dashboard.
1. Identify the agent, owner and connected tools
Write down the agent’s name, who operates it, where it runs, which plugins or tools it can call, and which user or service identity it uses. Check whether a workflow, automation platform or financial-data connector sits between the agent and the bank. Microsoft’s agent identity guidance recommends documenting an owner, using a unique identity for each agent, reviewing aggregate permissions and allowlisting tools.
Do not stop at the AI chat interface. An agent may have no bank connection itself but still be able to call another service that does. Ask what each connected tool can access and whether the agent is permitted to invoke it without an approval step.
2. Look for credentials and effective permissions
Review the agent host’s integration settings, secret store, identity configuration and authorization records for bank-related OAuth grants, API keys, refresh tokens, service-account credentials or saved browser sessions. Check the permissions attached to each credential, not just its label. Establish which accounts and data are included, whether access is read-only, whether financial actions are enabled and when the credential expires.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
The NCSC recommends restricting agent credentials and using the shortest practical lifetime. A credential may outlast the task or continue working after a user stops interacting with an agent, so check how it is renewed and where it can be revoked.
3. Review the bank’s linked-app or sharing controls
Sign in to your bank directly—not through a link supplied by the agent—and look for settings named “Linked apps,” “Third-party access,” “Data sharing,” “Connected services” or similar. Review the service name, accounts, information shared and any displayed consent or expiry details. If the service is unfamiliar, do not assume it is harmless because the name resembles the AI app; it may be a connector or data provider operating behind the scenes.

Bank of America says customers can view third-party services using its secure sharing method and revoke permissions. Chase’s “Linked apps” view shows apps or companies with access and allows removal. In the UK, Open Banking guidance says customers choose which data and duration to share and can withdraw consent through the app or bank.
4. Check records for activity
Search the agent’s activity traces, integration logs, proxy records and available bank logs for token issuance, requests to bank or financial-service domains, account-data reads, transaction creation and approval events. The NCSC recommends combining agent traces with sandbox, access and network logs; a conversational transcript alone may not record what a tool did in the background.

Look at the timestamps and identity associated with each event. A token being issued shows that authorization was created; a bank-domain request or data-read event can show that the connection was used. A log that contains no relevant events is useful only if the system was configured to record the relevant activity and the records cover the period you are checking.
How do I tell secure bank linking from password sharing?
In secure API or OAuth linking, the setup commonly sends you to the bank’s own domain, shows what accounts or data the service requests, and does not ask you to give your bank password to the AI app. Password-based access instead involves the third party receiving or using your login credentials, which can expose broader access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThese are different risk classes. Bank of America warns that a third party given login information has the same access to information as the customer. PNC says API-linked accounts appear in its Control Hub, while credential-based links do not; PNC says stopping credential-based sharing requires a password reset. Follow the bank’s own guidance for the particular connection rather than assuming every app uses the same method.
- Signs of an API or OAuth connection: you authorize the service on a bank-controlled page; the requested accounts or data are shown; the connection appears in the bank’s sharing or linked-app controls; and the service can be revoked there.
- Signs of credential-based access: the service asks you to enter or save your bank username and password outside the bank’s own sign-in flow, or the bank identifies the connection as credential-based. A bank may not display this type of connection in the same place as API-linked apps.
A branded sign-in screen is not enough to establish how the connection works. Verify the address and domain during authorization, read the requested permissions, and check the bank’s own record after linking. If you already gave an AI service or connector your bank password, treat that password as exposed even if you cannot confirm that anyone used it.

What should I compare when reviewing an agent or integration?
Use the effective permissions and operational controls—not claims such as “secure” or “read-only”—to compare connections. If any item is unclear, treat it as an unanswered security question before granting access.
| Check | Lower-risk indication | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Read versus write | Only necessary account data is available, with no ability to initiate or change transactions. | Can the agent transfer funds, create payments, add payees or change account settings? |
| Account and data scope | Access is limited to selected accounts and the specific information needed. | Does the grant cover every account, or only the one you intended to connect? |
| Credential handling | The connection uses an identifiable bank-approved authorization flow and does not expose your password to the agent. | Where is the credential stored, which service can use it, and can you revoke it? |
| Lifetime and revocation | Access is task-scoped or short-lived, and you can end it from the bank or provider. | Does consent expire, can a token be renewed, and what happens when you revoke access? |
| Human approval | State-changing actions require a clear, separate approval. | Can the agent act without showing what it is about to do? |
| Logging | You can inspect tool calls, access events and approvals. | Do logs identify the agent, credential, action and time well enough to investigate? |
| Provider identity and oversight | The bank and service identify who operates the connection and how it is controlled. | Can you identify the company actually receiving data, and whether it is regulated where that matters? |
Canadian government guidance puts a useful principle plainly: “Make it obvious when the agent is suggesting versus doing.” For a bank connection, that means distinguishing a proposed transaction from a tool call that can actually submit or authorize it.

End the authorization at the relevant service and bank, then secure the account according to how the connection was made. If you shared a password, revoking an app grant alone may not be enough; if the agent used a token or session, the credential or session may need separate invalidation.
- Stop the agent’s access. Disable the relevant integration or tool in the agent host so it cannot initiate further requests while you investigate.
- Revoke the bank-side connection. Use the bank’s linked-app, sharing or third-party-access control to remove the service’s consent. If the service is not listed, contact the bank and ask how to terminate that specific type of connection.
- Revoke provider-side grants and invalidate credentials. Remove the OAuth grant or API credential where it was issued, revoke refresh tokens, and terminate authenticated sessions where possible. If you cannot determine which credential was used, ask the provider and bank what needs to be invalidated.
- Change the bank password if it was disclosed. Bank of America specifically recommends changing it after login information has been shared. Use a new, unique password and do not re-enter it into the agent or connector.
- Strengthen sign-in protection. Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) and review available methods. The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends phishing-resistant MFA for AI accounts; a FIDO2/WebAuthn security key is one possible method when the account supports it. Confirm compatibility with your bank before relying on a hardware key.
- Preserve records and watch for activity. Save relevant logs and authorization details, then review transactions, new payees, login history and alerts for suspicious activity. The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends revoking compromised credentials and preserving logs. Contact the bank promptly about transactions or access you do not recognize.
How can an agent be configured to reduce bank-account risk?
Give the agent only the access its task needs, make risky actions visible, and ensure a person can stop the integration. Microsoft recommends unique agent identities, documented ownership, aggregate-permission review and tool allowlists; the NCSC recommends restricted credentials and short practical lifetimes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI app access a bank statement I upload without being connected to my bank?
A statement you upload is information you have provided to the app; that does not establish a live connection to your bank. Check the app’s file and data controls separately from its bank integrations, because disabling a bank connection does not necessarily remove a document already shared.
Can an AI agent see my account if I only gave it my bank password once?
Possibly: a service may retain the password or use it to establish a session or connection that remains active after the original sign-in. Change the password, review the bank’s access and session controls, and ask the bank how to terminate credential-based sharing.

What if I cannot find the connected app in my bank settings?
Some banks distinguish API-linked connections from credential-based ones, and the latter may not appear in the same linked-app list. Contact the bank through its official support channel and ask specifically whether the service has an active data-sharing authorization, stored-credential connection or session.
Should I freeze my bank account if I find an unknown AI connection?
An unfamiliar connection alone does not prove that money was moved, but it warrants prompt revocation and a review of transactions and payees. If you see an unauthorized transaction or cannot stop the access, contact the bank immediately and follow its fraud-response instructions.
