There is no dependable visual shortcut that proves a retro game cover or manual scan was made with AI. Strange lettering, repeated textures, impossible shadows and other defects are useful prompts for investigation, not a verdict. The strongest approach combines the best available file, any verifiable provenance information, image-history searches and dated records from publishers, artists or archives.
A clean image, a missing metadata field or a negative result from one verifier cannot establish that the packaging is human-made. Conversely, a supported AI marker is evidence about that marker’s scope, not a complete answer about authorship, ownership or historical context. Use the workflow below to report what the evidence actually supports.

Not reliably. Visual inspection can reveal clues, but it cannot authenticate an image or determine who made it. Retro packaging is especially difficult because a modern scan may combine a printed original, restoration work, color correction, cropping and compression; each step can create artifacts that resemble AI errors or erase useful evidence.
Provenance checks are more informative than intuition. The Google guidance on verifying AI-generated media, Microsoft’s provenance-detection overview, the AI Forensics human guide and Midjourney’s verification documentation all describe signals and limits rather than a universal detector.

Phrase a finding at the strength the evidence warrants: “a supported AI provenance signal was detected,” “visual anomalies require review,” “the image matches an earlier documented source,” or “the available evidence is inconclusive.” Avoid converting “no signal found” into “not AI-generated.”
What evidence should you collect before checking the image?
Start by preserving the most complete version you can obtain. Every re-save, screenshot, social-media upload or messaging-app conversion can remove metadata, resize the pixels or strip a signed provenance record.
Prefer the original export or scan
- Ask for the original scan or exported image rather than a screenshot embedded in a post.
- Keep the file unchanged and make a separate working copy for cropping, enlargement or OCR.
- Record where the file came from, the page or post address, the date you downloaded it and any stated game, region, edition or artist.
- Save related files, such as the back cover, spine, manual pages and publication photographs. A single front-cover crop can hide edition clues.
Original files preserve more useful evidence, but an original is not automatically authentic. Metadata may already have been removed, and a file can contain a false or incomplete history.
Which provenance signals can help?
Signals answer different questions. Compare what each one covers before treating a result as meaningful.

How do you check a box-art or manual file step by step?
Use the following sequence and keep notes for each result. The order moves from evidence that can disappear easily to historical corroboration.
1. Identify the exact packaging variant
Write down the game title, platform, publisher, region, language, release or re-release period and catalog or product number if visible. Note whether the picture is a front cover, an advertisement, a manual page, a fan-made reproduction or a scan of a physical item. Regional editions often use different artists and layouts, so comparing the wrong edition can create a false mismatch.

2. Obtain and preserve the best file
Request the highest-resolution original available. A scan in a preservation archive or a publisher’s digital catalog is preferable to a compressed social post. Keep the untouched download, then make copies for enhancement. Photograph or scan the physical item again only if no better file exists, and record the scanner or camera settings in your notes.
3. Inspect provenance and metadata
Open the file in a viewer that can display embedded Content Credentials or a signed manifest. If a manifest is present and verifies, read the stated origin, tools and edit history instead of treating the badge as a general authenticity seal. The information documents activity inside that system; it does not establish the full life of a 1980s or 1990s package.
Review ordinary metadata as supporting context. A scan date that post-dates the game is expected for a modern digitization. An “AI” or image-editor software tag may indicate a later restoration, a maliciously changed field or a genuine generative step; it cannot decide the question alone. Save a screenshot or text copy of the fields before opening the image in software that might rewrite them.
4. Examine likely failure points at high magnification
Inspect the original pixels, not a thumbnail. Check small lettering, logos, legal lines, character fingers, hardware controls, perspective, reflections and repeated background motifs. AI-generated images may show garbled text, inconsistent object details, lighting that changes direction, or patterns that repeat unnaturally. Old printing, halftone dots, tape damage, optical blur and a poor scan can produce similar effects, so mark each observation as a clue rather than proof.
For manuals, compare the same term, logo or diagram across pages. A typesetter’s consistent font and baseline are useful context; a single warped word may instead be the result of a folded page or OCR overlay. Do not “repair” suspicious text before preserving the original.
5. Search the image’s earlier history
Run a reverse-image search on the full cover and on distinctive details such as a character illustration or publisher logo. Try an uncropped version first, then carefully chosen crops if the full scan is not indexed. Follow each promising result to its earliest credible host and compare the artwork, dimensions, credits, language and edition.

The AI Forensics guide describes reverse search as a provenance lead, not a certainty test. A marketplace listing that repeats the same image is not independent confirmation; a dated magazine advertisement, publisher catalog or archive scan is stronger. Save the page address and publication date because search rankings and image hosts change.
6. Corroborate the claimed history
Look for records that existed close to the game’s original release: publisher catalogs, contemporary advertisements, trade-show photographs, credited artist portfolios, library collections and photographs of physical copies. Check that the record identifies the same platform, territory and packaging variant. Independent records that agree on the art and date provide stronger support than many undated reposts.
A later artist portfolio can establish that an artist claimed the work, but it may not prove when the image was created. Likewise, a modern physical reproduction can be authentic as a reproduction while its artwork is newly generated. State which part of the history the record actually documents.
7. Write a calibrated conclusion
Use a short evidence log and select one conclusion:
- Supported AI provenance signal detected: name the verifier or manifest and the marker it recognized; do not infer more than that system records.
- Visual anomalies observed: list the specific regions and alternative explanations, such as print damage or restoration.
- Earlier documented source located: identify the dated, authoritative record and explain whether it matches the exact edition.
- Inconclusive: say which files, records or signals were unavailable. This is a valid result, not a failure.
How should you interpret a Content Credentials or watermark result?
Think of provenance as a chain-of-custody record, not a truth machine. A signed record can show that a file passed through named tools or accounts and that certain edits were recorded. It does not prove the creator owned the source material, that the historical claim is accurate, or that every earlier version is represented.
A negative result has several possible explanations: the provider is not supported, the image predates the marker, the manifest was removed, or a routine conversion damaged it. Before reporting “no AI,” verify that you used the right file and a service whose coverage includes the signal you are seeking. Why can visual clues be misleading on old scans?
Physical packaging has its own visual noise. Dot patterns from offset printing, color separation errors, a scanner’s sharpening, paper folds, ink bleed, dust removal and hand-written notes can all distort letters and edges. A restoration artist may redraw a logo or fill a missing corner, creating a clean area beside damaged original art.
Conversely, generative systems can produce polished, plausible covers with no obvious defect. Do not score an image by how “retro” or “too perfect” it looks. Use anomalies to choose where to compare against another scan or a dated source, then document the comparison.
What should you compare when choosing a verification service?
No single service covers every retro image. Evaluate a service against the file and claim you have, rather than selecting one because it displays a confident label.

The available guidance establishes these comparison axes and limitations, not a universally best tool for retro game packaging. Use more than one evidence type and explain disagreement instead of averaging labels.

- Relying on a “six-finger” or garbled-text checklist: many human-made scans contain defects, and modern generated images may avoid obvious ones.
- Testing a screenshot and treating the result as a property of the artwork: the screenshot may have lost the relevant provenance record.
- Assuming missing metadata means a clean history: stripping metadata is routine when files are exported or uploaded.
- Counting reposts as independent evidence: dozens of copies can all originate from one unsourced upload.
- Matching the wrong edition: regional covers, budget reissues and platform conversions may legitimately differ.
- Calling a restoration “AI-generated packaging”: an editor may have used an automated tool on an originally human-created scan; distinguish the original artwork from later processing.
- Using a detector score as a historical date: a score cannot establish when the image was created or printed.
How can you document the investigation for other collectors?
Create a compact evidence packet without altering the source file. Include the original download, a working copy with any crops clearly labeled, the source page and access date, metadata or provenance screenshots, reverse-search results, and links to dated records. Annotate observations with pixel coordinates or page numbers so another person can inspect the same areas.
Separate facts from interpretation. “The manifest reports tool X” is a fact about the manifest; “therefore the 1991 box was AI-made” is an unsupported leap unless the record clearly covers that original object. If the evidence changes, retain the earlier notes and explain what new file or source changed the assessment.
Is there a measured rate of AI-generated retro game packaging?
No cited source provides a prevalence statistic for AI-generated retro game box art or manuals, and the reviewed guidance does not report detector accuracy on this specific material. Do not attach a percentage to the likelihood that a particular cover is synthetic. The defensible result is an evidence-based description of that individual file’s provenance and history.

Can a high-resolution scan prove that the original box was human-made?
No. Resolution improves the chance of reading credits, comparing printing details and recovering metadata, but it does not establish who created the underlying artwork. A dated photograph or catalog entry can document that a package existed at a particular time without revealing every step in its creation.

Should I run an AI detector on the manual’s OCR text?
Text classifiers address writing, not the provenance of the printed page or its illustrations. OCR can also introduce errors that look synthetic, so preserve the scan and compare the typography and wording with another contemporaneous copy instead.
What if the artwork appears in a magazine from the game’s release year?
That is strong historical corroboration that the image was publicly associated with the game by that date, especially when the advertisement names the publisher and edition. It still does not by itself identify the artist or rule out later digital replacement of the scan you are examining.
How should I share a suspicious image without destroying evidence?
Keep the untouched original privately and publish a separate, clearly labeled copy for discussion. Include the source address, download date and any transformations applied, because a platform may recompress the shared version and remove the provenance information you want others to inspect.
