The quickest way to identify a phone’s SIM support is to combine three checks: inspect the hardware for a SIM tray, look in the cellular settings for an eSIM control or EID, and verify the exact model number and sales region. A tray normally means physical-SIM capability; an EID or an “Add eSIM” option indicates eSIM hardware. If both appear, the phone may support physical SIM and eSIM, although the number of lines that can be active together depends on the model, software and carrier.
Do not rely on the phone family name alone. The same model series can have different SIM arrangements in different countries, and a carrier must support eSIM activation even when the handset contains eSIM hardware.

A physical SIM is the removable card that stores your subscriber identity and connects the phone to a mobile network. It sits in a tray and can be moved to another compatible handset. Apple describes an eSIM as a digital SIM built into the device, so there is no card to insert.
An eSIM is not a downloadable app or a second phone number by itself. The handset needs an embedded eSIM component, the operating system must expose it, and the carrier must provide an activation method such as a QR code, an in-app transfer or manual details. A phone can therefore have eSIM hardware but still be unable to activate a particular carrier plan.

How can I check whether my phone has a physical SIM slot or eSIM?
Use the following checks in order. They work even when you do not yet have an active plan.
- Inspect the outside of the phone. Look along the edges for a narrow tray outline and a tiny eject hole. Use the supplied eject pin or a SIM-eject tool; Motorola’s instructions call for inserting the tool into the tray hole and removing the tray. Do not push a pin into a microphone opening or force a tray that does not move.
- Look for an eSIM control in settings. Search the Settings app for “eSIM,” “SIM,” or “cellular.” Labels such as Add eSIM, Digital SIM, Download a SIM or Available SIM are strong evidence that eSIM is supported.
- Find the EID. The EID (eSIM identifier) is a long device number assigned to the embedded SIM component. An EID shown in the phone’s information screen is evidence of eSIM hardware.
- Dial the hardware-information code. Open the phone app and dial
*#06#. On many phones, the resulting screen lists IMEI numbers and, when present, an EID. The code does not activate service; it only displays identifiers. - Record the exact model number. Write down the model code, not just the marketing name. Check the About screen, the label on the original box or the purchase receipt.
- Check the country or regional version. Compare that model code with the manufacturer’s specifications for the country where the phone was sold. Regional variants can have a tray, eSIM, two physical SIMs or a different combination.
- Confirm carrier compatibility. Before purchasing a plan, ask the carrier whether it supports eSIM activation for that exact model and whether the phone must be unlocked.
What does the tray, EID and settings evidence mean?
No single clue is perfect in every model family, so classify the result by combining the physical and software checks.

How do I check an iPhone?
On an iPhone, the tray, About screen and Cellular settings provide the clearest evidence.
Inspect the tray
Look on the phone’s outer edge for the tray outline and eject hole. Apple says that if an iPhone model does not have a SIM tray, that model supports eSIM only. This is a model-specific rule, so identify the exact iPhone generation and regional version rather than assuming every phone with the same name is identical.
Check the About screen
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Scroll for Digital SIM, Available SIM or an EID.
- Note the model number and, if shown, the carrier-lock status.
An EID is the most direct software confirmation that the handset contains an eSIM component. “Available SIM” can appear when the phone is ready to add a line, while the absence of that label can reflect a regional model or software limitation.
Check Cellular settings
Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data on some regional language settings). An Add eSIM option indicates that the operating system recognizes eSIM capability. If you see only a physical-SIM line and no eSIM option, compare the model number with Apple’s regional specifications before concluding that eSIM is unavailable.

Important regional example
Apple documents that iPhone 14 and later models sold in the United States are eSIM-only. Other regional versions can retain a physical tray or, in some markets, support two physical nano-SIMs. A U.S. specification therefore cannot be used to predict the SIM arrangement of an imported or overseas model.
How do I check an Android phone?
Android menu names differ by manufacturer, Android release and carrier firmware. Use the Settings search field first, then follow the manufacturer’s likely path.
Samsung-style menu
- Open Settings > Connections > SIM card manager.
- Look for Add eSIM, Add mobile plan or a similar control.
- Open the phone’s About section and search for an EID if the SIM manager is inconclusive.
Other Android menus
Common paths include Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs or Settings > Network & Internet > eSIM cards. The exact wording can change after an Android update. A control labeled Download a SIM generally means the device can install an eSIM profile, while a menu that only lists a removable SIM does not prove that eSIM hardware is absent.
Use the identifier shortcut
Dial *#06# and inspect the identifiers. If an EID appears alongside one or more IMEIs, the phone has eSIM hardware. If only IMEI information appears, check the model documentation; some software builds do not expose every capability in the same menu.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy can two phones with the same name have different SIM support?
Manufacturers build regional variants to meet local carrier requirements, radio-band rules and market preferences. One country’s version may include a tray, another may omit it, and a third may offer two physical nano-SIM positions. Carrier-branded firmware can also change which eSIM controls are visible.
When buying used, imported or refurbished hardware, compare all of these details:

- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
- Exact model code and hardware revision.
- Country or region where the phone was originally sold.
- Whether the phone is carrier-locked.
- Physical tray layout: one nano-SIM, two nano-SIMs or none.
- Presence of an EID and an eSIM menu.
- Supported network bands and the intended carrier’s activation policy.
A listing that says only “iPhone 14,” “Galaxy” or another family name is not enough to establish SIM compatibility.
Can I use a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time?
Many phones that support both can keep two lines available, but “supports both” does not guarantee that both lines can be active simultaneously. The exact model determines whether dual-SIM dual-standby is available, whether one line must be disabled during certain calls, and how many eSIM profiles can be stored.

A device may allow one physical SIM plus one eSIM, two physical SIMs, or several stored eSIM profiles with only a subset active. Carrier policy can impose additional limits, especially when both lines are from different networks.
Typical dual-line tasks
- Assign one line for calls and texts and the other for mobile data.
- Choose a default line for contacts that do not already have a preferred number.
- Keep a home number on the physical SIM while adding a travel plan to the eSIM.
- Temporarily disable one line without removing a card or deleting an eSIM profile.
Before switching, confirm which line handles emergency calls, voicemail and two-factor messages. Deleting an eSIM profile can require the carrier to issue a new activation, so disable it first unless you are certain you will not need it.
Why doesn’t my phone show “Add eSIM”?
An absent option does not have one universal cause. Work through these checks before assuming the phone lacks eSIM.
1. The model is a physical-SIM-only variant
Some regional versions omit the eSIM component even though another version of the same family supports it. Compare the exact model code with the manufacturer’s country-specific specifications.

2. The carrier or firmware hides the feature
Carrier-customized software can restrict eSIM controls, and an uncompleted software update can leave menus outdated. Install the phone’s supported updates, restart it and search Settings for “SIM” and “EID.” Do not attempt an unofficial firmware change solely to expose a menu.
3. The phone is managed or locked
Enterprise management, parental controls or a carrier lock can prevent adding a new line. Check the About screen for a carrier-lock message and ask the account administrator or carrier what restrictions apply.
4. You are checking the wrong menu
On iPhone, use Settings > Cellular and Settings > General > About. On Android, use the Settings search field and inspect the SIM manager or Network & Internet section. Menu names can change after updates, so searching is often faster than following an old screenshot.
5. The phone has an EID but the carrier does not support activation
An EID proves hardware capability, not service availability. A carrier may support eSIM only for selected devices, account types or countries. Ask whether your exact model and plan are eligible before requesting a QR code or transfer.

What should I confirm with a carrier before activating an eSIM?
Contact the carrier with the model number, IMEI or EID and the country where the phone was purchased. Ask the following questions:
- Is eSIM activation available for this exact model and software version?
- Is the phone required to be unlocked, and how can the lock status be checked?
- Can an existing physical-SIM number be transferred to eSIM without changing the number?
- Can the account keep a physical SIM and an eSIM active together?
- Does activation require Wi-Fi, a QR code, an app or an in-store identity check?
- What happens if the eSIM profile is deleted or the phone is reset?
Apple advises contacting the carrier for eSIM support, and carrier device-specification pages can identify which SIM types they activate. Treat a generic “eSIM compatible” statement as a starting point, not confirmation for your particular plan.

How should I compare two phones’ SIM capabilities?
Use a side-by-side record instead of comparing only product names.
| Comparison point | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Physical tray | None, one nano-SIM, or two nano-SIM positions | Determines whether a removable card can be installed and how many physical lines are possible. |
| EID/eSIM | Present or absent; eSIM menu visible or absent | Shows whether embedded-SIM hardware is exposed by the software. |
| Active-line combinations | For example, physical plus eSIM or two physical SIMs | Stored profiles and simultaneously active lines are not always the same. |
| Model and region | Full model code and original sales country | Regional variants can have different trays and eSIM rules. |
| Carrier support | Eligible networks, plans and activation method | Hardware alone does not create a working service line. |
| Lock status | Unlocked or restricted to a carrier | A locked phone may reject another carrier’s physical SIM or eSIM. |
What information should I save before asking for help?
Capture the About screen and write down the results of the hardware inspection before contacting support. Include:
- Manufacturer and complete model number.
- Country where the phone was purchased.
- Whether a tray is present and where it is located.
- Whether an EID appears after dialing
*#06#or in About settings. - The exact wording of any eSIM option, such as “Add eSIM” or “Download a SIM.”
- Current operating-system version.
- Carrier name, plan type and whether the account is prepaid, postpaid or business-managed.
Do not publish IMEI or EID numbers in a public forum. They are device identifiers; share them only through the carrier or manufacturer’s official support channel when requested.
What are the most common identification mistakes?
- Assuming a tray means eSIM. A tray confirms physical-SIM hardware, not eSIM capability.
- Assuming no tray means every phone is eSIM-only. Apple documents that rule for iPhone models without a tray; other brands require model-specific confirmation.
- Confusing an IMEI with an EID. IMEI identifies cellular radio hardware, while EID identifies the embedded-SIM component.
- Using another country’s specification sheet. A regional page may describe a different tray and SIM combination.
- Deleting an eSIM while troubleshooting. Removal can require a new carrier activation, so disable the line first and keep the activation details available.
- Testing only with a carrier that does not offer eSIM. A missing activation option may be a carrier limitation rather than a hardware limitation.
What is the most reliable way to decide?
Use a two-factor confirmation: verify the hardware (tray or no tray) and verify the software (EID or eSIM control), then match the result to the exact model and purchase region. A tray plus EID generally means both SIM types are available; a tray without eSIM evidence generally means physical SIM only; and a trayless iPhone with an EID is eSIM-only under Apple’s documented model rule. If any evidence conflicts, pause the purchase or activation and obtain a model-specific answer from the manufacturer or carrier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a factory reset make an eSIM option appear?
A reset normally does not add missing eSIM hardware or change a regional model’s capabilities. It can clear a software glitch, but back up first because resetting may remove installed eSIM profiles and require carrier reactivation.
Is an EID safe to share with a mobile carrier?
Carriers may request the EID to provision an eSIM, and it is appropriate to provide it through their authenticated support or activation process. Avoid posting it publicly alongside your IMEI, phone number or account details.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I move an eSIM to another phone whenever I want?
The transfer process depends on the carrier and operating-system combination. Some carriers support an in-device transfer, while others issue a new QR code or require identity verification; deleting the old profile before the transfer succeeds can interrupt service.
Does an unlocked phone automatically support every eSIM plan?
No. Unlock status only removes a network restriction. The phone still needs the carrier’s supported radio bands, an eligible model and a carrier account or plan that allows eSIM activation.
