A game always uses the GPU for ordinary rendering, but it uses an AI accelerator only when its software dispatches machine-learning work. Features such as NVIDIA DLSS, Intel XeSS, newer machine-learning paths in AMD FSR, or a DirectML inference graph may run on matrix or AI-specific hardware; a high 3D percentage in Task Manager does not prove that. To verify what is happening, identify the feature enabled in the game, measure a repeatable scene, watch GPU-engine activity and frame counters, then compare the same scene with that feature disabled. Consumer overlays can show strong evidence, while a vendor profiler or API trace is needed for definitive attribution of a particular dispatch.

What is the difference between normal GPU rendering and AI acceleration?

A modern graphics processor contains several independently scheduled engines. The 3D engine runs rasterization, shaders, geometry, ray-tracing work and other graphics commands. Separate copy and video engines move data or encode and decode media. Some GPU generations also include matrix or AI-acceleration units designed for neural-network operations. These units are part of the graphics processor, but they are not the same thing as the general 3D engine.

Rendering a scene, drawing shadows, applying a conventional post-process or running a physics shader can keep 3D utilization high without using an AI unit. AI acceleration begins when the game or middleware submits machine-learning operators, such as an upscaler, ray-reconstruction model, generated-frame model or another inference graph. The API may schedule those operators through a compute queue, so a monitor can show “compute” activity rather than a label that says “AI.”

This distinction matters because utilization is a workload measure, not an architectural diagnosis. Microsoft’s DirectX engineering explanation describes a GPU engine as an independent unit of silicon that can be scheduled and operate in parallel. A percentage for one engine therefore tells you that work is occupying that engine; it does not identify every internal core handling the work.

Which game features are evidence of AI-accelerator work?

The strongest first clue is an explicit in-game option whose implementation is documented as neural or machine-learning based. The option still has to be enabled and active in the scene you test.

NVIDIA DLSS

NVIDIA describes DLSS as a suite of neural-rendering technologies powered by RTX Tensor Cores. The suite includes Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA. An RTX GPU, a visible DLSS option and a measurable change when that option is toggled provide a practical indication that the title is dispatching DLSS work, although only a low-level trace can attribute every operation to Tensor Cores.

Intel XeSS

Intel calls XeSS an AI-based upscaling technology. Intel’s implementation is delivered as DirectX 12 compute-shader passes, so Windows may show activity on a compute engine and may also show ordinary 3D activity. Check the title’s XeSS setting, your Arc hardware capability and Intel’s changing supported-games list. If a game is absent from that list, Intel advises checking with the developer rather than assuming that every version supports XeSS.

AMD FSR

FSR is integrated by individual games rather than being a single operating-system service. AMD’s current documentation covers upscaling and frame-generation features, including machine-learning-based paths for supported titles. Read the exact FSR version and mode in the game. The presence of “FSR” alone does not tell you whether that build uses a conventional algorithm or an ML-based path.

DirectML and custom inference

Microsoft defines DirectML as a low-level API for machine learning. It is vendor-agnostic and can execute ML operators on a GPU or on available AI-acceleration cores. A developer can therefore use DirectML without exposing a consumer-facing “AI cores” switch. Application documentation, debug labels or a developer trace may be the only way to identify such a graph.

How do I check this in a game without developer tools?

Use a controlled before-and-after test. Keep the scene, resolution, quality preset, camera path and background activity constant; change only the named feature. The following procedure works with Steam’s performance monitor and Windows Task Manager, or equivalent overlays that report the same categories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the hardware and driver. Write down the exact GPU model, graphics API if the game displays it, and driver version. AI features are conditional on GPU generation, driver support and the game’s integration.
  2. Inspect the game’s graphics menu. Note whether DLSS, XeSS, FSR, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, DLAA or another ML-related option exists. Record the selected mode and render scale, not just the on/off state.
  3. Choose a repeatable scene. Use a saved position, built-in benchmark or a fixed camera route. Let shader compilation and asset streaming settle before recording numbers. Do not compare a busy combat scene with a quiet menu.
  4. Record baseline telemetry. In Steam’s performance monitor, note base or actual game FPS, generated-frame FPS when it is provided, GPU utilization, video-memory use and frame time. Steam describes this monitor as a way to see whether a game is GPU-bottlenecked, but its utilization value is simplified.
  5. Watch each Windows engine. Open Task Manager and choose Performance > GPU. Observe the 3D, Compute, Copy and Video graphs while repeating the scene. You can right-click a graph to change the displayed engine if the default view hides the one you need.
  6. Toggle one feature. Turn the named upscaler, reconstruction mode or frame-generation option off. Some games require a restart or a level reload before the change takes effect; do that, then return to the identical camera path.
  7. Compare the evidence. Look at frame time, image reconstruction, base FPS, generated FPS, memory use and the pattern of engine activity. A consistent change tied to the toggle is stronger evidence than a single utilization snapshot.

Save screenshots or a short log for both passes. If the game dynamically changes quality, caps its frame rate or enters a different power state, repeat the run until both passes are comparable.

What do Task Manager and Steam actually prove?

Task Manager’s GPU page reports activity by engine category. A rise in 3D activity proves that graphics work is occurring on the 3D engine. A rise in Compute activity shows compute commands, but it does not by itself establish that Tensor Cores, matrix units or another AI-specific block executed them. Copy and Video graphs likewise identify data-transfer or media work, not neural inference.

Steam’s overlay adds useful context by separating actual game FPS from generated-frame FPS when the title exposes that information. Generated frames can make motion appear smoother, yet they are not equivalent to additional simulation, game-logic or input-processing work. Record both counters instead of treating a single headline FPS number as the game’s true workload.

Neither view is a universal AI-core meter. Hardware vendors expose different counters, and Windows may aggregate several internal units behind one engine graph. If your test shows unchanged 3D utilization after enabling an ML feature, that does not disprove AI use; the work may be short, overlapped with graphics, or reported under Compute.

How should I interpret an A/B test?

Start with the feature’s documented behavior, then use telemetry to confirm that the game changes when the feature changes. The following patterns are common.

  • Base FPS rises and internal render resolution falls: an upscaler is probably active. The result supports the feature’s integration but does not reveal which internal core handled each pass.
  • Generated FPS appears while actual FPS stays similar: frame generation is producing additional display frames. Evaluate base FPS and frame time separately; the generated count is not a replacement for simulation performance.
  • Compute activity increases with an ML option: this is consistent with a compute-shader or inference dispatch. It is not proof of a dedicated AI unit because ordinary compute shaders use the same engine.
  • Nothing changes: the option may be unsupported on the selected GPU, disabled by another setting, limited to a different scene, blocked by a driver or applied only after a restart. Verify the exact mode and reload the scene before drawing a conclusion.
  • 3D utilization remains near 100 percent: the game may be limited by ordinary rendering even while a short AI pass runs in parallel. Utilization alone cannot separate those contributions.

How do DLSS, XeSS, FSR and DirectML differ in what you can observe?

Technology What its vendor documents Practical checks
NVIDIA DLSS Neural rendering powered by RTX Tensor Cores; the family includes Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA. Confirm an RTX GPU, the DLSS option and its mode. Compare base and generated FPS, frame time, image quality and engine telemetry.
Intel XeSS AI-based upscaling for Arc and other supported GPUs, implemented as DirectX 12 compute-shader passes. Check the XeSS setting, the GPU capability, the title’s supported-game information and Compute/3D activity during a repeatable scene.
AMD FSR Game-integrated upscaling and frame-generation features, with machine-learning-based paths included in current AMD documentation for supported titles. Record the exact FSR version and mode, verify that the title and AMD Software support it, then compare frame time and image output with FSR disabled.
Microsoft DirectML A low-level ML API that can run operators on a GPU or on available AI-acceleration cores. Look for application or API documentation and use a developer profiler. Consumer overlays may show only generic Compute or 3D activity.

These descriptions are not interchangeable. A game can expose an AI-based feature through compute shaders, while another can dispatch an ML graph through DirectML. The menu label tells you the intended integration; the controlled test tells you whether that path is active in the scene you measured.

How do I test frame generation correctly?

Frame generation needs its own measurement because it changes the relationship between displayed frames and game-produced frames. First record the actual or base FPS with generation disabled. Then enable generation without changing resolution or quality, and record both actual FPS and generated-frame FPS if Steam reports them.

Compare frame times and camera smoothness, but do not describe the generated count as equivalent simulation throughput. Input sampling, game logic and physics continue to be driven by the game’s produced frames, while generated images are inserted for display smoothness. A high generated-FPS number can therefore coexist with a much lower base-FPS number.

If the overlay reports only one FPS value, use a frame-time graph or the game’s own counters and state clearly which value is being measured. Keep the display refresh rate and frame cap constant between passes; otherwise the cap can hide the feature’s effect.

What is the definitive way to identify an AI dispatch?

For developer-level attribution, capture the rendering workload with Unreal Insights, RenderDoc, a vendor profiler or an API log appropriate to the game’s graphics API. These tools can show command queues, shader or operator names, timings and resource transitions that consumer overlays aggregate.

Profiling itself adds overhead and can alter scheduling. Use it to confirm a short, repeatable capture rather than to compare headline FPS with an unprofiled run. Match the same scene and driver, and avoid treating a tool’s generic “compute” label as proof of a specific hardware block unless the profiler documents that counter for your GPU generation.

Why might the results be inconclusive?

The option is present but performance does not change

The menu can expose a feature that is unavailable for the selected GPU, disabled by a conflicting option or inactive until a restart. Check the game’s required hardware, reload the level and verify that the render scale or reconstruction mode actually changes. A static scene may also hide a short inference pass, so test a camera path with movement and detail.

Task Manager shows only 3D

Windows may attribute the work to a shared engine or the pass may be too brief to see at the graph’s sampling interval. Use a frame-time capture or developer profiler, and look for the visual and FPS changes from a controlled toggle instead of waiting for a dedicated “AI” label.

Compute usage is high with the feature disabled

Games use compute shaders for many non-AI tasks, including lighting, particles, culling and post-processing. Compute activity therefore establishes only that compute work is running. Compare the delta between matched runs and inspect the game’s documented feature path.

Results change between launches

Shader caches, asset streaming, dynamic resolution and power management can alter the first minutes of a run. Warm up the scene, use the same save and camera route, and record several passes. If the title changes settings automatically, document the effective resolution and mode for each run.

The game is missing from a support list

Support lists change as developers add versions and patches. Intel specifically advises checking with the developer when a title is absent from its XeSS list. Treat the list as a compatibility reference, not as a universal detector for every custom implementation.

What can and cannot be concluded from a consumer check?

You can usually establish whether a named feature is enabled, whether it changes the image or frame-time behavior, and whether GPU engine activity changes in the same scene. You cannot infer exact Tensor-Core cycles, matrix-unit occupancy or a cross-vendor percentage from the standard Windows graphs. No universal consumer counter for exact AI-core cycles is provided by the canonical documentation.

Support also varies with game version, driver, GPU generation, graphics API and feature revision. State those conditions with your result: “DLSS Super Resolution changed this scene on an RTX card with driver version X” is meaningful; “the game uses AI” without naming the feature, mode and test conditions is not.

What is the shortest reliable checklist?

  • Identify the GPU model and driver.
  • Write down the exact DLSS, XeSS, FSR, Frame Generation or reconstruction mode.
  • Use a fixed scene, resolution, quality preset and camera path.
  • Record base FPS, generated FPS when available, frame time, GPU utilization and video-memory use.
  • Watch 3D, Compute, Copy and Video engines in Task Manager.
  • Toggle only the named feature, restart or reload if required, and repeat the scene.
  • Use a profiler or API trace when you need hardware-level attribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Task Manager show Tensor-Core usage directly?

Usually no. It exposes Windows GPU-engine categories rather than a universal counter for Tensor-Core or matrix-unit cycles, so a profiler specific to the GPU and API is required for that level of attribution.

Why does a game still use the GPU when an AI feature is enabled?

AI reconstruction is only one stage of the frame. Rasterization, lighting, geometry, ray tracing, compositing and presentation still run on ordinary graphics engines, and those stages can remain the dominant workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if DLSS, XeSS or FSR is missing from the menu?

Check the game patch, graphics API, GPU generation and driver requirements first. A missing option means that this installation does not expose that integration; it does not identify whether a different build or another ML path exists.

Is generated-frame FPS the same as the game’s real performance?

No. Generated frames affect displayed smoothness, while simulation and input work are represented by the actual or base-frame rate. Report both counters when the overlay provides them.
