No single detector can prove that a political-ad image was generated by AI. The most reliable approach is to preserve the original file, inspect its C2PA Content Credentials and any supported watermark, then combine reverse-image search, metadata and edit-history checks, visual inspection, and independent reporting. A missing credential or a “not detected” result is inconclusive. Whether an ad must disclose AI use also depends on the country, state, election and platform.
How can I check whether a campaign image was generated by AI?
Use a layered verification process rather than relying on a single website or detector. Start with the highest-quality original file, check signed provenance, look for provider-specific watermarks, investigate earlier versions of the image, and corroborate the political claim through reliable sources.

- Preserve the original file. Ask the campaign, publisher or person who shared the image for the original download rather than a screenshot, messaging-app copy or social-media repost. Screenshots, resizing, compression and format conversion can remove metadata and weaken or destroy provenance signals. Keep the file unchanged and make a working copy for analysis.
- Inspect C2PA Content Credentials. Open the file in a C2PA viewer or another supported verifier. A valid signed manifest can identify the creating tool or issuer, time of creation, and recorded edits. The US Department of Health and Human Services describes its free C2PA Viewer as showing origin, creator and edit history. Treat a credential as evidence about a file’s documented history, not as proof that the political message is true.
- Check supported watermarks. Some providers embed an invisible signal, such as SynthID, that compatible tools can look for. A positive result is evidence that the supported system’s signal is present. “Not detected” means only that the verifier found no supported signal; it does not establish that a human camera made the image. Cropping, heavy editing, compression, unsupported generators and metadata stripping can all affect detection.
- Use a second verifier when it adds coverage. Google’s Gemini guidance describes checking Content Credentials and SynthID and reviewing summaries of composition, edit history and possible AI use. Such checks cover supported systems and formats, not every image generator or export path. If two tools disagree, preserve both results and report the disagreement instead of choosing the more dramatic answer.
- Run a reverse-image search. Search the full image and distinctive crops for an earlier news photograph, stock image, campaign upload or unrelated context. A match can reveal that a real photograph was reused with a false caption, composited with new elements or altered to change who or what it depicts. No match is normal for a newly created image and is not proof of AI generation.
- Review metadata and edit traces. With the original file, examine EXIF fields such as camera make and model, capture date, lens information, software and export history. Editing software names can indicate that a file was processed, but ordinary design and photo tools are not themselves evidence of generative AI. Social platforms frequently remove EXIF data, so an empty metadata panel is weak evidence.
- Inspect visual details at high magnification. Check lettering, fingers, teeth, jewelry, logos, reflections, shadows, hair and repeated background objects. Garbled text, impossible anatomy, inconsistent light direction and patterns that repeat too neatly can justify further investigation. They are clues, not a standalone verdict; real photographs can contain optical artifacts, motion blur or aggressive retouching.
- Corroborate the event and the source. Compare the claim with the campaign’s official account, contemporaneous event photographs, reputable journalism and established fact-checking organizations. Check whether the supposed location, weather, clothing, people and timeline fit independently documented events. The Brennan Center for Justice advises treating missing or invalid provenance as a reason to seek additional context, not as proof of fakery.
- Record exactly what is known. Use precise language such as “signed provenance detected,” “no supported signal found,” or “visual and contextual evidence suggests manipulation.” Do not turn “no signal” into “authentic,” and do not call an image AI-generated solely because a detector assigns it a probability.
What do C2PA Content Credentials actually prove?
C2PA is an open technical standard for signing provenance information. A credential can bind a file to an issuer and record creation or editing actions, allowing a verifier to detect whether the signed history was altered after signing.
The standard is used for both AI-assisted and conventional content. A credential may therefore document an ordinary camera capture, a retouching step, a composite or an AI generation. It does not certify that the depicted event happened, that a person gave permission, or that a campaign’s statement is accurate. A valid signature is positive provenance evidence, not a truth guarantee.

Credentials can also disappear when an image is re-encoded, screenshotted or passed through a service that strips metadata. If a repost has no manifest, compare it with the original rather than concluding that the creator had no provenance record.
What does an invisible watermark such as SynthID mean?
An invisible watermark is a provider-specific signal embedded in image data. A compatible verifier may find it even when ordinary metadata has been removed, but durability depends on the transformations the image has undergone.

They also do not cover images made by unsupported tools. A positive supported-watermark result is useful evidence of origin; a negative result narrows nothing beyond the verifier’s coverage.
Which verification method is strongest for a political ad?
No method works universally. Evaluate each signal by what it can cover, how easily it survives reposting, and whether it provides an explainable record.
| Method | Signal type | What a positive result means | Main limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| C2PA Content Credentials | Signed metadata | A signed issuer and recorded origin or edits are attached to the file. | Coverage depends on the creator’s tools and export path; signatures may be removed by conversion. It does not validate the political claim. |
| Supported invisible watermark | Embedded provider signal | A compatible verifier found a watermark associated with a supported system. | Provider-specific; heavy editing, compression, cropping or unsupported tools can defeat detection. |
| Generic AI detector | Statistical or visual classification | The model found patterns it associates with synthetic imagery. | Accuracy varies by generator, image type and post-processing. The Brennan Center says voters should not depend on these tools to verify or disprove political content. |
| Reverse-image search | Contextual match | An earlier or differently captioned version may reveal reuse or manipulation. | New images may have no matches; search indexes are incomplete and can miss cropped versions. |
| EXIF and edit history | File metadata | The file contains camera, date, software or export clues. | Platforms often strip fields, and metadata can be edited. Presence does not prove the scene is genuine. |
| Human visual inspection | Artifact review | Visible inconsistencies identify details worth checking. | Skilled generation and ordinary photographic artifacts can look similar; inspection is not proof. |
| Independent corroboration | Source and event context | Separate records support or contradict the claimed event. | It can establish what happened without identifying the production tool used for the image. |
How should I compare verification tools?
Look beyond whether a service returns a simple “AI” or “not AI” result. First identify the signal type: signed metadata, an embedded watermark, visual analysis or outside context. Then check coverage—which generators, file formats and export paths the service supports. A tool designed for one provider cannot reliably assess every generator.
Consider durability as well. Ask whether the signal survives screenshots, compression, cropping, resizing and format conversion. Next assess evidence strength: a signed issuer and edit history are different from a weak statistical score, while an independent event record may establish what happened without identifying the software. Prefer tools with transparency about the issuer, model, time and edits they detected. Finally, consider privacy and workflow. Uploading an original campaign file to a third-party service may expose sensitive material, so use a trusted verifier and retain a local copy.

NIST’s 2024 report surveys technical approaches to synthetic-media detection rather than offering one accuracy number for all political images. That limitation is why a documented combination of provenance and context is stronger than a single confidence score.
Can metadata prove that a campaign image is real?
No. EXIF data can show a camera model, capture time, lens or editing application, but metadata can be removed or rewritten. A camera-made file can still carry a false caption, and a file with a design application in its history may reflect ordinary retouching rather than generative AI. Treat metadata as one clue in the chain of custody. The strongest use is to compare the original file’s fields with the claimed time, location and production process, then corroborate those details independently.
Can visual clues reveal an AI-generated campaign image?
They can reveal problems, but not reliably identify the software that made the image. Zoom in on small text in signs and clothing, hands and fingers, teeth, earrings, eyeglasses, logos, reflections in windows, cast shadows and background faces. Look for lettering that changes shape, inconsistent perspective, duplicated objects, mismatched light direction or details that dissolve into texture.
Compare suspicious details with the image’s overall resolution. A low-resolution repost may create blocky edges and halos that resemble generation artifacts. Conversely, modern image models can produce convincing faces and hands, while a genuine photograph can show strange reflections or warped wide-angle geometry. Use visual anomalies to select what to corroborate, not to issue a final accusation.
How do I use reverse-image search without overinterpreting the result?
Search the uncropped original first, then try crops containing a face, logo, landmark or distinctive sign. Record the earliest credible appearance, not merely the first search result. Check dates, captions and the publisher’s reputation, and open the surrounding page to understand the original context.
An earlier photograph of the same scene can show that an ad changed the caption, inserted a person or altered clothing. A stock-photo match may explain why an image appears in several unrelated posts. Failure to find a match is expected for private campaign shoots, newly generated images and images outside search indexes.

What do political-ad AI disclosure rules require?
Rules differ by jurisdiction, election and platform, so an image’s label—or lack of one—cannot by itself settle whether it is synthetic.
United States federal elections
In a September 2024 interpretive rule, the Federal Election Commission said its fraudulent-misrepresentation ban is technology neutral. The agency explained that fraudulent misrepresentation “may be accomplished using AI-assisted media, forged signatures, physically altered documents or media, false statements, or any other means.” The rule did not create a universal requirement to place an AI label on every political image.
State example: Florida
Florida law illustrates why state-specific checking matters. For specified deceptive advertisements depicting a real person doing something that did not occur, the statute requires the disclaimer: “Created in whole or in part with the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI).” Whether a particular ad falls within that provision depends on the statute’s definitions, the content and the election context.
Platform labels
Google Ads gives disclosure examples including “Altered or synthetic content” and “This image does not depict real events.” A platform label describes how that service classifies or requires disclosure of content; it is not a universal authenticity certificate.
Australia
The Australian Electoral Commission says federal campaigners are not required to disclose AI manipulation of images, although they may choose to do so. State and territory rules, party policies and platform terms can still add requirements.
Before drawing a compliance conclusion, identify the country, state or territory, election, advertiser and platform, then read the current rule that applies to that combination.

How should journalists, campaigns and voters report uncertainty?
Separate the image’s production history from the truth of its message. A file can be camera-made but misleadingly captioned, or AI-generated yet used to illustrate a clearly labeled fictional scenario. State which checks were performed, which file was examined, and what each result actually supports.
- Provenance signal detected: identify the issuer, tool and recorded edits if the verifier exposes them.
- No supported signal found: explain that the file lacks a detectable credential or watermark within that tool’s coverage.
- Visual or contextual evidence suggests manipulation: describe the specific discrepancy and cite the independent record that conflicts with the ad.
- Unresolved: say what could not be verified, such as the absence of an original file or conflicting dates.
Keep the original, screenshots of verifier results and dated copies of relevant pages. That record lets another reviewer reproduce the assessment even if the ad is later deleted. Note the file’s hash or other stable identifier when your workflow supports it, and write down the verifier name, date and settings so a later result can be compared fairly.
What common mistakes produce false accusations?
- Calling missing metadata proof of AI. Most social services remove EXIF fields during upload.
- Treating a detector score as a verdict. Detector performance changes with new generators, image genres and compression.
- Assuming a label proves the claim is false. Labels concern production or disclosure, not whether the depicted event or statement is accurate.
- Ignoring ordinary editing. Cropping, color correction, compositing and retouching can produce artifacts without generative AI.
- Checking only the repost. Provenance is most informative on the earliest, highest-quality file.
- Confusing a real image with a true caption. Reverse-image context is essential even when the pixels came from a camera.
What is the practical standard for calling an image AI-generated?
Use the strongest wording the evidence supports. A signed credential naming a generative tool, or a supported watermark confirmed on the original file, can justify saying that the file was produced or processed by that system. Without such provenance, combine multiple independent clues and describe the conclusion as probable, suspected or unresolved. Never convert a negative detector result or missing metadata into a claim that the image is human-made.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot be checked for AI generation?
You can inspect a screenshot for visual clues and search it for earlier context, but screenshots usually remove the original file’s C2PA manifest and EXIF data. Ask for the source file before making a provenance judgment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does editing a real photo make it an AI image?
Not necessarily. Cropping, color correction, retouching and compositing can be performed with conventional software; a provenance record or other evidence is needed to identify generative processing specifically.
Why would an AI-generated image have no AI label?
Labels depend on the creator, platform and applicable law. Some tools do not publish a detectable credential, and reposting can strip one; a jurisdiction may also require no disclosure for that type of ad.
Best Value
Should I report a suspicious campaign image?
Preserve the original and document the exact discrepancy before reporting it. Send the file, verifier results and independent context to the platform, election authority, newsroom or fact-checking organization that handles the relevant jurisdiction.
Can metadata prove that a political ad image is authentic?
No. EXIF fields can support a claimed camera workflow, but they are easy to remove or alter, and a genuine camera file can still carry a false caption. Use metadata alongside provenance and independent context.

What does an AI label on a political ad actually mean?
It usually describes a platform’s classification or a legal disclosure about altered or synthetic content. It does not prove that the depicted event is false, and the absence of a label does not prove the image is human-made.
Are generic AI-image detectors reliable enough for election claims?
They can provide a weak supplementary clue, but performance varies with the generator, image type and post-processing. The Brennan Center for Justice advises voters not to depend on deepfake detectors to verify or disprove political content.
What should I do if two verification tools disagree?
Save both results, check each tool’s coverage and transformation limits, and report the disagreement. Seek the original file and independent event evidence rather than selecting whichever result sounds more conclusive.
The Bottom Line
Check the original file first. A signed C2PA credential or supported watermark can document provenance, but neither proves that a political claim is true. Missing signals, metadata gaps and detector scores are inconclusive. Combine provenance checks with reverse-image search, visual review and independent reporting, and apply the disclosure rule for the specific jurisdiction, election and platform.
