You usually can’t tell whether a video is AI-generated by looking for one telltale flaw. A more reliable check is to preserve the best available copy, trace its source and earlier appearances, verify its date and location, and then inspect the footage for signs of generation or editing. Treat detector scores and visual oddities as clues—not proof—and distinguish an AI-generated clip from genuine footage shared with a false caption or date.

What does “fake video” mean?

“Fake” can describe several different problems, and they need different checks. A clip might be generated from scratch, altered with AI, manipulated by other means, or completely genuine but presented with the wrong date, location, or explanation. Those possibilities should not be collapsed into one verdict.

  • AI-generated: The depicted scene, or a substantial part of it, was created by an AI system rather than captured as shown by a camera.
  • AI-edited: Camera footage was modified with AI—for example, to add, remove, replace, or change elements. An AI-assisted edit may be disclosed and harmless; the label alone does not say whether the result is deceptive.
  • Manipulated: The clip was altered or assembled in a misleading way. This can involve conventional editing and does not necessarily involve AI.
  • Real but out of context: The video may show a real event, but an old clip, different location, or unrelated event is being used to support a misleading claim.
  • Unverified: The available evidence does not establish the clip’s origin or context.

A camera-captured clip can still mislead if its caption is wrong. Conversely, a video that contains AI-generated material is not automatically deceptive. The key question is what the evidence establishes about this file and the claim attached to it.

What should I do first when I find a suspicious video?

Preserve the best available copy and the post it came from before investigating. Re-encoding, screenshots, and reposts can remove useful information or make it harder to trace where a clip originated.

  1. Save the best-quality file you can access. Keep the original download if available; otherwise, preserve the highest-resolution copy you can obtain. Avoid using a screen recording or a screenshot of the video as your only copy.
  2. Record the post details. Note the post URL, account name, caption, upload time, and any visible watermark. If the caption changes or the post disappears, this record helps preserve the claim you were checking.
  3. Keep the clip separate from your notes. Do not overwrite or edit your saved copy. Make a working copy if you need to extract frames or examine the file.
  4. Write down the precise claim. For example: “This shows an explosion in City X today,” rather than simply “Is this video fake?” That gives you specific date, place, and event details to test.

A repost can be the first copy you encounter without being the original. Preserve it as evidence of what was shared, but do not assume the posting account filmed the scene or that its upload time is the recording time.

How can I check where the video came from?

Check for signed provenance information, then look for earlier appearances of distinctive frames. Provenance can document a file’s history when present and intact; reverse search can reveal that the same footage appeared earlier or with a different caption.

Check for Content Credentials or another provenance record

Content Credentials associated with the C2PA standard can provide a cryptographically signed record of a file’s origin and changes. Depending on the record, it may identify a capture or generation tool, timestamps, and edit history. NIST (2024), the Canadian Cyber Centre (2025), and Microsoft Research (2026) discuss provenance as a way to support transparency about content history—not as proof that a depicted event or caption is true.

A result showing no provenance information is inconclusive. Platforms, downloads, editing, and format conversion can strip a manifest, so authentic footage may have no detectable record. Microsoft Learn likewise cautions that not detecting provenance does not necessarily mean content was AI-generated. A valid record is useful evidence about the file’s claimed history, but it does not independently verify what happened in the scene.

Search for earlier appearances with keyframes

Choose several distinctive frames rather than relying on a single image: a street sign, unusual building, vehicle, face, or object may be more useful than a generic sky or close-up. Search the frames individually with tools such as InVID-WeVerify or Google Lens, then compare results and captions.

InVID-WeVerify can fragment a video into keyframes, support reverse image searches, inspect metadata, and assist with contextual or forensic analysis. Some functions depend on platform access, file quality, and whether metadata is available. A lack of results does not prove the clip is new: it may not be indexed, or the selected frame may not match a searchable copy.

Follow promising results to the earliest credible appearance you can find, and note how the caption, date, or edit changes between copies. AFP’s 2024 guidance and methodology treat a reverse-search match as a lead, not proof of who filmed a clip or which copy was first uploaded. The oldest result in a search index is only the oldest one that index found.

How do I verify the video’s date and location?

Test the claim against details that can be checked independently: landmarks, signs, language, weather, clothing, road markings, architecture, and the reported timeline. A genuine clip may be old or from somewhere else, so this check matters even when there is no sign of AI generation.

  1. List the claim’s checkable details. Note the alleged place, date, event, and any specific identifying features in the caption.
  2. Compare visible landmarks. Use maps or satellite imagery to check whether buildings, road layouts, signs, or terrain match the claimed location. Look for more than one feature where possible.
  3. Check environmental clues. Language and signage, clothing, weather, shadows, and road markings may support or contradict the proposed time and place. Treat an individual clue cautiously; a shadow or weather impression alone rarely settles a claim.
  4. Look for independent corroboration. Check whether separate reporting or independent witnesses describe the same event. Several posts that repeat the same unverified upload are not necessarily independent confirmation.
  5. Compare the earliest versions you found. A changed caption, crop, or edit may explain why a real clip is now being presented as evidence of a different event.

The House of Commons Library (2026) and AFP’s methodology describe context checks such as comparing visual details with maps, satellite imagery, weather information, and independent reporting. If those checks conflict with the caption, state the conflict rather than trying to infer a new date or location without evidence.

What visual clues can indicate AI generation or editing?

Frame-level anomalies can suggest that a clip deserves closer scrutiny, but none proves that it is synthetic. Compression can create artifacts in ordinary footage, and improved generators may produce scenes without familiar visual flaws.

  • Changing anatomy or geometry: Faces, hands, or objects may change shape between frames. Check whether the apparent inconsistency persists when you inspect surrounding frames rather than a single paused image.
  • Speech and lip-sync mismatch: A person’s mouth movement may not align with the audio, or the speech may not fit the visible scene. A mismatch can also result from dubbing, editing, or playback problems.
  • Unnatural motion: Movement may appear inconsistent between a person and nearby objects, or a subject may change position in a way the scene does not explain.
  • Lighting and reflections: Reflections, shadows, or highlights may seem inconsistent with the surrounding environment. These clues are difficult to assess from compressed or poorly lit footage.
  • Text and repeated details: Background lettering may warp, or textures and small objects may repeat in an unnatural way. Check multiple frames; a single blurred sign is weak evidence.
  • Unexpected cuts or audio: Abrupt transitions or sound that does not fit the scene can point to editing or context problems, but they do not identify the editing method by themselves.

Scrub through the clip frame by frame if possible, paying attention to whether a suspected inconsistency appears over time. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (2024) and the House of Commons Library (2026) describe visual clues as useful for raising hypotheses, not as conclusive authentication. Normal-looking hands or eyes do not establish that a video is genuine.

Which verification methods are reliable, and what can each prove?

No single method answers every question. Provenance concerns origin and edit history; reverse search and context checks concern where and when a clip appeared; visual inspection and detectors address signs of generation or manipulation. Combining methods gives a more useful picture than treating any one result as a verdict.

Method What it can establish Important limits
Signed provenance or Content Credentials A signed origin and edit-history record when the record is present, intact, and verifiable. A missing record is inconclusive; a record does not prove the depicted event or caption is true. See NIST (2024) and Microsoft Research (2026).
Watermark May indicate generation by a system that uses a supported watermark. Basic edits, cropping, compression, or unsupported export paths can remove or degrade it. Ofcom (2025) reports that watermarks can often be stripped by basic edits.
File metadata May provide capture time, device, or location details that support other evidence. Platforms commonly remove metadata, and users can alter it. Treat it as corroboration, not proof; see the House of Commons Library (2026).
Reverse image search Can uncover earlier copies, different captions, or evidence that a clip has circulated before. Does not prove who filmed it or that the oldest indexed copy was the first upload. AFP (2024) and AFP methodology treat matches as leads.
Frame-by-frame visual inspection Can reveal inconsistencies that suggest generation, editing, or a need for further checks. Visual clues are not conclusive; compression and newer generators affect what they look like. See GAO (2024) and the House of Commons Library (2026).
Automated detector Can provide a classifier’s assessment of a specific file as supporting evidence. May miss unfamiliar generators or produce false positives when resolution, lighting, or compression differs from its training data. GAO (2024) says current detection has limited real-world effectiveness.

The reliability of any result also depends on whether you have the original file, how much the clip has been cropped or re-encoded, whether the check can be repeated, and whether you can document how you reached the conclusion. A result that cannot be reproduced or tied to the file you actually checked deserves less weight.

Should I trust an AI-video detector score?

No. A detector score is a tool’s assessment, not a fact about a clip. Use it alongside provenance, source history, context, and frame-level checks, and record the tool, version, file tested, and result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Detectors can fail when a generator is unfamiliar or the file differs from the detector’s training conditions—for example, because of resolution, lighting, or compression. A high score should not be reported as proof that a clip is AI-generated, and a low score does not establish authenticity. The Government Accountability Office concluded in 2024 that “Current deepfake detection technologies have limited effectiveness in real-world scenarios.” Ofcom’s 2025 guidance recommends combining attribution with other interventions rather than relying on one measure.

There is also a public-interest reason not to place the burden on viewers alone. In user research summarized by Ofcom in Deepfake Defences 2: The Attribution Toolkit (2025), 85% of adults supported online platforms attaching AI labels, while 34% said they had ever seen one. Those figures describe the research summarized by Ofcom; they are not a measure of detector accuracy.

How should I report what I found?

Use a label that matches the evidence and explain the specific basis for it. If the source, provenance, or independent corroboration remains unresolved, say so instead of guessing.

  • “AI-generated” when the available evidence supports that the depicted content was generated by AI.
  • “AI-edited” when evidence supports AI modification of camera footage.
  • “Manipulated” when the clip has been altered misleadingly but the method is not established.
  • “Real but out of context” when the footage appears genuine but the claimed date, location, or event is wrong or unsupported.
  • “Unverified” when the evidence does not establish the clip’s origin or context.
  • “Authenticity not established” when you cannot confidently determine whether the clip is genuine or altered.

Separate what you observed from what you infer. For example, report that a reverse search found an earlier copy with a different caption, or that a provenance record was not detected; do not turn either fact into a stronger conclusion than it supports. Keep a record of the file, the post details, the checks performed, and what remains unknown so another person can follow your reasoning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a screenshot or screen recording prove that a video is fake?

No. It may help document what appeared on a screen, but it is not a reliable substitute for the best available video file when checking provenance, metadata, or frame details. Keep it as a record of the post only if useful, and do not present it as proof of how the original clip was made.

What if a video has no Content Credentials?

That absence does not establish that the clip is AI-generated or authentic. A manifest can be lost through platform handling, downloads, editing, or format conversion, so investigate the source and context independently.

Can a genuine video be misleading without being edited?

Yes. A real recording can be paired with an incorrect caption, date, location, or explanation. Verifying what the footage depicts is separate from verifying the claim being made about it.

Should I share a suspicious video while I’m checking it?

Avoid presenting it as confirmed evidence while its origin or context is unresolved. If you need to discuss it, make the uncertainty explicit and preserve the original post details so people can assess the claim rather than an unsupported conclusion.
