Yes—a spare laptop running Syncthing can replace the file-synchronization part of a conventional cloud service, without sending your working files to a hosted storage account. Syncthing copies creations, edits, and deletions directly among the devices you authorize. The arrangement works only when those devices can connect, and a laptop that is asleep, powered off, or disconnected cannot exchange files. It also is not a backup: a deletion or damaged file can propagate to every synchronized device. Treat the laptop as another sync peer, keep an independent backup if the files matter, and configure the devices and shared folders deliberately.
What does replacing cloud storage with a spare laptop actually mean?
Syncthing is synchronization software, not a central online drive. Each participating computer keeps its own local copy of a folder. When two configured peers are online and reachable, Syncthing compares their folder contents and transfers the changes needed to make them agree. New files, modifications, and deletions are all part of that process.

That can make files available to another computer without paying for a hosted-storage quota, but it does not create an always-on server automatically. The laptop must remain powered, awake enough to run Syncthing, connected to a network, and able to reach the other peer when synchronization is needed.
The software itself avoids a conventional cloud-storage subscription in this design. You still have the practical costs and risks of the equipment, electricity, local networking, and whatever internet access is required for remote connections.

How do I sync files between computers without cloud storage?
The basic setup is the same whether the peers are two laptops on one network or machines in different locations: install Syncthing on both, exchange and approve their device IDs, and share the folders you want synchronized.
Prepare both computers
- Install the same current Syncthing release, or releases that are mutually compatible, on the main computer and the spare laptop.
- Choose a local folder on each machine for the synchronized data. Make sure the account running Syncthing has permission to read and write those locations.
- Decide which computer will hold the authoritative working files initially. Copy or move the starting data into the folder you intend to share before you begin editing on both machines.
Connect the devices by ID
- Open Syncthing’s web interface on each computer and display its device ID. The ID is a cryptographic identifier for that installation.
- On the first computer, add the second computer as a remote device by entering its ID. Repeat the process in the opposite direction; connections require mutual configuration, not just a one-sided invitation.
- Accept the pending device request on each side and give the peer a recognizable name, such as “Desk laptop” or “Spare laptop.” Verify the ID before approving it so an unintended device cannot join.
Share the folder
- Add the local folder in Syncthing and assign it a clear label.
- Select the remote device as a sharing target. Syncthing will present a folder-sharing request on that peer.
- Accept the folder on the other computer and choose its local path. The two paths do not have to have the same name or location, but each must point to the storage you intend to use.
- Wait for the initial scan and transfer to finish before changing the same files on both computers. The interface should show the folder as synchronized when no pending changes remain.
Repeat the folder-sharing process for each separate collection you need to sync. Sharing one folder does not automatically share other folders elsewhere on a disk.
Can a spare laptop work as an always-available file server?
It can serve as a frequently available peer, but only if its power, sleep, and network settings support that role. Syncthing cannot synchronize with a machine that is shut down or unreachable.
Power and sleep
Configure the laptop’s operating system so it does not suspend or hibernate while plugged in, or choose a sleep policy that matches when you need synchronization. Closing the lid may trigger sleep even when the charger is connected. Check the operating system’s power settings and confirm that Syncthing resumes after a restart.
Network reachability
Both peers must be online at the same time for a transfer. On a local network, this is usually straightforward. For a computer outside the home or office, Syncthing may establish a direct connection when network conditions allow. If a direct path fails, a relay can forward the encrypted traffic, but relay transfers are slower than a direct path.

Availability expectations
A laptop left unattended can lose Wi-Fi, run out of battery, reboot for updates, or become unavailable after a router change. Build your workflow around those interruptions: continue working locally, then let Syncthing catch up when the peer returns. Do not treat the laptop as a guaranteed remote file service unless you have separately engineered reliable power, networking, and recovery.

No. Synchronization reproduces mistakes as well as good changes. If you delete a file, overwrite it, or allow corruption into the synchronized folder, that change can propagate to every device.
The Syncthing FAQ answers the question “Is Syncthing my ideal backup application?” this way:
“No. Syncthing is not a great backup application because all changes to your files (modifications, deletions, etc.) will be propagated to all your devices.”
The FAQ also says that versioning can be enabled, but encourages using other tools to keep data safe from your or the project’s mistakes. Versioning can provide recovery points for some changes; it does not turn every synchronized copy into an independent backup.

Keep at least one separate copy that Syncthing cannot modify immediately. An external drive stored separately is one category of solution; choose a backup method and schedule appropriate to how quickly you must recover and how much data you can afford to lose. Test restoring a few files rather than assuming that a copy exists because a folder shows “up to date.”
How secure and private is a direct Syncthing connection?
Syncthing’s project describes its transport security plainly: “All communication is secured using TLS.” It also states that only devices you have explicitly allowed can connect to your other devices. Device IDs and mutual approval are therefore central to the trust model.
“No cloud” does not mean “no network service” or “no metadata.” Syncthing’s discovery infrastructure can announce a device ID and listening ports, and discovery operators can associate device addresses with IP addresses. When a relay is used, the relay can learn the participating device IDs and the amount of traffic. The relay forwards encrypted traffic and cannot inspect the file contents, but it still handles connection metadata.
- Approve only device IDs you recognize, and remove old or lost devices from the configuration.
- Share only the folders that need synchronization; a trusted device does not need access to every directory on your computer.
- Protect the operating-system accounts and disks on each peer. Transport encryption does not help if an unlocked laptop is stolen.
- Review discovery and relay behavior if your threat model includes revealing device addresses, connection times, or traffic volume to infrastructure operators.
What controls Syncthing’s speed and CPU use?
There is no universal transfer speed for a spare-laptop setup. Throughput depends on the network path, whether the connection is direct or relayed, the performance of each device, and the size and number of files.

The FAQ identifies file hashing, encryption, optional compression, and periodic scans as sources of CPU use. A low-powered laptop, a relay path, or a poor network can limit throughput. Once an initial synchronization has settled, CPU use is generally expected to be negligible, although scans and large batches of changes can create temporary load.

During the first synchronization
The initial scan can take time because Syncthing must inspect files and calculate hashes before transferring data. Keep both machines powered and connected, avoid editing the same files until the first pass finishes, and watch for errors rather than repeatedly restarting the process.
For ongoing edits
Small changes usually require less work than copying a large dataset again, but many tiny files still create scanning and filesystem overhead. If the spare laptop is busy with other tasks, schedule large imports or media reorganizations for periods when slower synchronization is acceptable.
Will permissions and file metadata match on every computer?
No. Which file attributes Syncthing can synchronize depends on the operating system and the filesystem on each peer. Do not assume that permissions, symbolic links, timestamps, ownership, or other metadata will behave identically across Windows, macOS, Linux, removable volumes, or network-mounted filesystems.
Before using the setup for application data, test the specific file types and attributes you care about. A folder of ordinary documents may behave well across platforms while a development tree, database files, executable bits, or links may require platform-specific handling. Keep applications closed when their files are being synchronized unless the application is designed for concurrent or replicated access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does this setup compare with hosted cloud sync?
The right choice depends less on a slogan about ownership and more on availability, recovery, privacy, and compatibility. The following comparison describes the documented behavior rather than a head-to-head performance test.

| Consideration | Spare laptop with Syncthing | Hosted cloud synchronization |
|---|---|---|
| Where the working copies live | On the configured devices, including the spare laptop | On local devices plus a provider’s hosted service |
| When synchronization can occur | Peers must be online and reachable together; a relay may help when a direct path fails | Usually depends on each client reaching the provider, so peers do not have to be online simultaneously |
| Availability if a laptop sleeps or loses power | That peer cannot exchange changes until it returns | Other clients can often use the provider copy while one device is offline |
| Independent recovery from deletion | Not provided by synchronization itself; changes can propagate to all peers | May include provider history or recycle-bin features, depending on the service and plan |
| Privacy exposure | File contents are encrypted in transit, while discovery and relay systems can see IDs and connection metadata | Requires trusting the provider’s storage, security, and metadata practices |
| Cross-platform behavior | Metadata support varies by operating system and filesystem | Also varies by client, but the provider may normalize some behavior |
| Capacity and recurring charge | Limited by the storage in your devices; no hosted quota is involved | Limited by the account’s plan and subject to that provider’s pricing and policies |
What should I check when synchronization is not working?
Start with the status shown for both the device connection and the shared folder. Most failures fall into a small number of checks.
- The remote device is disconnected: Confirm that Syncthing is running on both machines, the spare laptop is awake, and each computer still has network access.
- The devices are not pairing: Compare the complete device IDs, check that each side has approved the other, and remove any stale entry before adding it again.
- The folder is missing on one peer: Verify that the folder was shared with that specific device and that the sharing request was accepted there.
- The folder reports errors: Check local read/write permissions, available disk space, invalid paths, and files that are locked by another program.
- Transfers are unusually slow: Determine whether Syncthing is using a relay, whether Wi-Fi or the internet link is congested, and whether the spare laptop is CPU-bound during hashing or scanning.
- Files differ across operating systems: Inspect filename rules, case sensitivity, links, permissions, and other metadata supported by the two filesystems instead of assuming a transport failure.
Who is this arrangement a good fit for?
Use a spare-laptop peer when you want local control, have devices with enough storage, and can tolerate synchronization waiting for the laptop to come online. It is especially practical for a home or small-office workflow in which the machines are regularly available and you are willing to maintain the software and power settings.
Choose a hosted service or another architecture when you need access while every personal device is offline, a provider-managed history and recovery system, or predictable availability without maintaining a powered computer. Whichever model you choose, keep a separate backup for irreplaceable data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Syncthing synchronize files while one computer is offline?
No transfer can occur while the peers cannot connect. Syncthing records the local changes, then exchanges them after the offline computer returns and both devices are reachable; the waiting period does not itself create a conflict-resolution history.
How much storage does a Syncthing setup provide?
There is no pooled online quota. Each synchronized copy consumes space on its own device, so the smallest available destination volume limits what that peer can hold.
Can I use Syncthing for a database or live application folder?
Treat actively changing database files and application state as special cases. Close the application or use an application-supported replication method, then test recovery; ordinary file synchronization does not guarantee transactional consistency.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What happens if I replace the spare laptop?
A replacement computer has a new device ID. Add and approve that ID on the other peers, share the folders again, and verify the initial state before retiring the old device so that an incomplete copy is not mistaken for the current one.
