You can switch from ChatGPT to Claude or Gemini, but there is no universal one-click account clone. The reliable method is to export the data your account permits, separately capture the prompts, instructions, files, tools and examples that make each workflow work, then rebuild and test those components in the destination.
Gemini Apps has the clearest documented route for importing memory and ZIP chat histories from other AI services. Anthropic documents Claude exports, Projects and Artifacts, but the official material does not document direct ChatGPT-history import into Claude. Treat an export as raw material, not as a preserved copy of your old workspace.

Can you switch from ChatGPT to Claude or Gemini without losing your workflows?
Yes, if you migrate the workflow components deliberately. A conversation archive alone will not recreate the sidebar, subscriptions, settings, memories, custom GPTs, files, project behavior, connected services or workspace permissions that shaped your results.
The safest approach is a staged migration: inventory your important workflows, export ChatGPT data early, save reusable instructions and files in readable form, choose the destination that supports your requirements, rebuild a few high-value workflows first, and run representative tests before retiring the old setup.

What “workflow” means in this context
A workflow is more than a prompt. It normally includes a trigger or recurring task, a prompt template, custom instructions, project-level rules, reference files, examples of acceptable output, tools or connected services, and account permissions. Preserve each part separately so you can recreate it even when the destination uses different terminology or context rules.
What does a ChatGPT export actually preserve?
For eligible accounts, OpenAI says an export ZIP contains chat history and other relevant account data. It is valuable for reference and recovery, but it is not a working clone of the account.

OpenAI’s account-transfer guidance explicitly warns that uploading exported conversations does not restore separate chats or the former account’s subscriptions, settings, memories, GPTs, files or workspace access. It also cannot restore conversations that were already deleted.
How should you inventory workflows before switching?
Start with the tasks that would cost the most time to rebuild or replace. Do not attempt to migrate every historical chat before you understand which work is still active.
Create a workflow register
Use a spreadsheet or plain-text folder with one entry per recurring task. Record:
- Purpose: the job the workflow performs and who uses the result.
- Trigger: the event or request that starts it, such as a support ticket, meeting transcript or weekly report.
- Prompt and instructions: the reusable wording, output format, tone, exclusions and factual rules.
- Context: project instructions, definitions, policies and assumptions that are not repeated in every prompt.
- Reference material: filenames, versions, URLs, tables or examples the assistant must consult.
- Tools and access: connected services, browsing or code permissions, shared drives and workspace roles.
- Acceptance example: one or two successful inputs and outputs, plus the checks that made the result acceptable.
- Risk level: whether the workflow handles confidential, regulated, financial or customer data.
Separate durable instructions from conversation history
Read several successful chats and pull out rules that recur. A long conversation often contains one useful instruction surrounded by temporary context. Put durable rules in a short instruction document, keep reference data in separate files, and retain the original transcript only as an example or audit record.

For each custom GPT, write down its role, step order, refusal boundaries, output schema, knowledge files, tool calls and a few test prompts. This gives you a portable specification even though the GPT itself is not transferred by the documented export process.

How do you export your ChatGPT data?
For supported personal and eligible education accounts, the documented web route is Profile menu → Settings → Data controls → Export. Request the export before you announce a cutover: OpenAI says preparation can take up to seven days, and the download link expires after 24 hours.
- Open Data controls: sign in on the ChatGPT web app, open your profile menu, choose Settings, then Data controls.
- Request the export: select the export option and confirm the account email or verification steps shown to you.
- Watch for the delivery message: when it arrives, download the ZIP immediately because the link is time-limited.
- Store the archive safely: use encrypted storage with access limited to the people who need it. The archive may contain sensitive prompts, files and personal information.
- Inspect the contents: confirm that the conversations and account data you need are present before deleting anything or changing plans.
- Build your portable set: copy important prompts, instructions, files and example outputs into readable folders rather than relying on the archive’s internal structure.
Workspace exceptions
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspace users do not have the same self-service export control in Settings. OpenAI directs those users to their workspace owner, so obtain the organization’s approval and export procedure before moving data.
Do not rely on a deleted conversation
OpenAI’s help guidance says an export cannot restore conversations that were already deleted. If a thread matters, preserve it while it is still available and verify the downloaded archive before closing the old account.

Google’s Gemini Apps Help documents two import paths: bring over preferences and remembered details through a memory-import flow, or upload a ZIP archive of exported chats. The page specifically describes exports from ChatGPT and Claude, making Gemini the clearest documented destination for a history import in the sources covered here.
Gemini’s documented limits and eligibility

Check the current Gemini Apps Help instructions in your own account before planning around the feature. Availability can depend on age, country, account type and the surface you use.
How to use the Gemini import flow
- Confirm eligibility: use a personal Google Account, verify the age requirement and check that the feature is offered in your region and Gemini surface.
- Prepare the source export: request and download the ChatGPT archive, then keep the original ZIP unchanged as a backup.
- Import memory if offered: review the preferences and remembered details presented by the memory flow. Remove obsolete or sensitive items instead of carrying them over automatically.
- Upload chat history: select the ZIP import option and provide an archive within Google’s size and daily-upload limits.
- Allow processing time: the history may not be searchable or available immediately; Google says processing can take up to a day.
- Rebuild active workflows: open the imported material, identify the prompts and files that matter, and turn them into concise Gemini instructions and reference documents.
The documented import scope covers memory and chat history. It does not promise that custom GPT logic, connected apps, project configurations, subscriptions, identical model behavior or every file permission will be recreated. Test those elements independently.
Can you move ChatGPT conversations directly to Claude?
Anthropic documents account and conversation exports for eligible Claude users and some work-plan owners, but the official pages covered here do not document a direct ChatGPT-history import into Claude. The practical route is export, curate and rebuild.

What Claude export provides
Individual users and Team Primary Owners can request an export through Settings → Privacy in the Claude web app or Claude Desktop. Enterprise Primary Owners use Data management. Anthropic says mobile-app exports are not available, and eligibility and instructions vary by account type. The resulting data can help you preserve records and identify reusable material; it does not automatically become a Claude workflow.
Rebuild reusable context in Claude Projects
Claude Projects are available on paid plans and provide project knowledge and project instructions. Anthropic states that context is not shared across chats in a project unless the relevant information is included in the project knowledge base. Therefore, place stable policies, glossaries, templates and reference files in project knowledge, and put behavior rules and output requirements in project instructions.
- Create a project for a coherent body of work: separate unrelated teams or subjects so their instructions do not conflict.
- Add only durable knowledge: upload current policies, schemas, examples and source documents rather than entire noisy chat archives.
- Write explicit project instructions: specify the role, sequence, evidence rules, format, tone, failure behavior and when to ask for clarification.
- Start a clean test chat: confirm that the project has the expected knowledge and that each new chat receives the context you intended.
- Keep a versioned workflow file: record changes outside Claude so you can reproduce the setup if a project, plan or workspace changes.
Where Artifacts fit
Claude Artifacts are standalone documents, code, websites, diagrams and interactive components that can be edited, versioned, copied and downloaded, with plan-specific differences in access. They are useful for preserving and reusing outputs after you rebuild a workflow, but Anthropic does not say that Artifacts import ChatGPT workflows automatically.
How do you rebuild a workflow in either destination?
Rebuild the smallest useful version first. A compact, tested instruction set is more portable than a giant transcript pasted into every conversation.
- Choose one high-value workflow: select a task used frequently and with a clear success standard.
- Rewrite the objective: state the input, desired result, audience, constraints and stop conditions in plain language.
- Convert hidden assumptions into explicit rules: define terminology, source priority, citation expectations, formatting and handling of missing information.
- Prepare reference files: remove duplicates and stale versions, use descriptive filenames and note which file is authoritative.
- Recreate tool access: reconnect services only where the destination supports them and your account or workspace permits them. Recheck scopes rather than granting broad access by default.
- Add a known-good example: include a successful input and output, explaining why it passed.
- Run a baseline test: use the same prompt and source material in the old and new systems, then compare content, format, factual handling and file use.
- Iterate one variable at a time: change an instruction, file or tool permission separately so you know what improved or degraded the result.
What should you test before retiring ChatGPT?
Use representative cases rather than a single impressive demo. A workflow is ready when it remains reliable with ordinary inputs, edge cases and the permissions it will have in daily use.
Validation checklist
- Content: does the answer include the required facts and omit prohibited material?
- Format: are headings, tables, fields, code blocks or JSON shaped exactly as downstream users expect?
- Source use: does the assistant consult the intended files and distinguish authoritative from background material?
- Uncertainty: does it ask for missing information or qualify an unsupported claim instead of inventing one?
- Consistency: do repeated runs follow the same rules closely enough for the workflow?
- Tool behavior: do integrations authenticate, use the correct account and fail safely when unavailable?
- Access control: can only the intended people see project files, conversations and outputs?
- Recovery: can another team member understand and recreate the workflow from your documentation?
Keep a comparison record
For each test, save the input, files supplied, destination settings, output and pass/fail notes. Record whether a difference comes from prompt wording, context availability, model behavior, tool support or a permission boundary. This turns migration from a subjective impression into a repeatable acceptance test.
Which destination is better for a migrated workflow?
Neither service is universally better. Choose based on the workflow’s data, context, import eligibility and integration needs rather than on the existence of a chat archive.

What can go wrong during migration?
The export never arrives
Allow the full delivery window OpenAI describes, check the account email and spam filtering, and submit a fresh request if the link has expired. For a managed workspace, ask the owner to follow the organization’s export process instead of repeatedly using personal settings.
The archive opens but the workflow is still missing
This is expected when the workflow depended on hidden instructions, project files, memory or tools. Return to your workflow register, extract those components from successful chats and rebuild them explicitly.
Gemini does not show an import option
Check that you are using a personal Google Account, meet the age requirement, are in a supported region and have access to the source export. If the feature is unavailable for your account or surface, use the manual reconstruction method rather than altering the archive or assuming the option will appear later.
Claude answers ignore project material
Confirm that the files are in the project knowledge base, not merely attached in an earlier chat, and that the project instructions identify which sources are authoritative. Start a new test chat after changing the knowledge or instructions.
Outputs look different even with the same prompt
Different assistants may interpret instructions, context windows, tools and formatting rules differently. Compare the outputs against your acceptance examples, then rewrite ambiguous instructions and add explicit constraints instead of trying to reproduce every historical message.
A file or integration fails after the move
Check file type, size, current version, ownership and permission scope. Reauthorize the service with the least access necessary, and keep a manual fallback for any step that the destination cannot perform.
How should you handle privacy and organizational controls?
Migration copies potentially sensitive material into another provider, account and region. Obtain workplace approval before exporting customer, employee, legal, health or regulated data.
- Use redacted or synthetic examples for the first validation run.
- Remove secrets, API keys, passwords and unnecessary personal identifiers from prompts and files.
- Confirm who can access destination projects, imported history, downloaded artifacts and shared links.
- Review retention, deletion and administrative controls under the destination plan.
- Keep the export archive encrypted and record who downloaded or transformed it.
- Document which files were intentionally excluded so future users do not mistake an incomplete migration for a complete one.
For personal accounts, separate private experiments from work data. For managed accounts, let the workspace owner determine whether an export, import or connected service is allowed.
When is it safe to close or downgrade the old account?
Keep ChatGPT available until the destination passes your acceptance tests and you have an independent copy of the portable workflow materials. Before cutover, confirm that the new system can handle normal and edge-case inputs, required files are current, tools authenticate correctly, collaborators have access and a fallback exists for failures.

- Have another user perform at least one task from your documentation.
- Announce the cutover date and identify the owner for future edits.
- Retain the old account or archive according to your personal or organizational retention policy, then cancel or downgrade only after that period is satisfied.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I migrate only one ChatGPT project instead of my entire account?
The documented Gemini flow describes uploading a ZIP archive, while the Claude material describes exports rather than selective project import. For a single project, create a curated package of its instructions, current files and representative examples, then rebuild it manually; do not assume the product will preserve project boundaries from a full archive.
How many test cases should I prepare for a workflow migration?
Use a small but varied set: at least one ordinary case, one incomplete or ambiguous input, one edge case and one case that exercises every required file or tool. Add a known failure example if the old workflow had a specific refusal or formatting rule.
Can I run ChatGPT and the new assistant in parallel?
Yes. Parallel operation is often the lowest-risk cutover because it lets you route routine work to the destination while retaining the old system for comparison and recovery. Set a clear end date and avoid editing the two versions independently without recording which instruction set is current.
What should I do if the imported history contains confidential material I no longer need?
Do not upload it merely because it exists in the archive. Create a reduced working set, redact unnecessary identifiers, verify destination access controls, and delete temporary copies according to your retention policy after confirming that the required workflow still works.
