You can switch a physical SIM to an eSIM without changing your phone number when your phone, mobile plan, country and carrier all support the feature. On supported devices, open the SIM settings, choose the physical line and select the conversion or transfer command. If that command is missing, the carrier must usually issue a replacement eSIM, QR code or manual activation.

Keep the physical card installed until the eSIM can make calls, send texts and use mobile data. The conversion itself is normally quick, but eligibility and menu names vary by model, software version and region.

What is the difference between converting a SIM and transferring one?

Converting keeps the line on the same phone and changes its SIM profile from the removable card to an embedded eSIM. Transferring moves that line to a different phone, either through a built-in device-to-device process or through carrier activation.

These are separate workflows. An iPhone may offer “Convert to eSIM” for the SIM already inside it, while a new iPhone may offer “transfer from another iPhone.” Pixel and Galaxy phones use their own settings paths, and a cross-platform move may require the carrier even when both phones support eSIM.

Method Where the line ends up Main prerequisites What happens to the old SIM
Same-device conversion The current phone Compatible model, software, plan and carrier; Wi-Fi It is disabled when the eSIM activates
iPhone to iPhone Quick Transfer A new iPhone Both phones nearby, Bluetooth on, Apple Account signed in, iOS 18.4 or later, supported carrier The previous SIM is deactivated after transfer
Android or Pixel transfer A new Android phone Android 12 or later, current Google Play Services, screen lock for automatic transfer, supported carrier The source line stops working after activation
Carrier-assisted replacement Any eligible phone Carrier approval and its QR-code or manual activation process The carrier retires the old profile when the replacement is active

A menu option is not a guarantee that activation will succeed. The carrier still has to support eSIM for your exact device, plan and region.

What should I do before removing or converting the physical SIM?

Prepare the phone and keep a recovery path so a failed activation does not leave you without service.

  • Connect the phone to reliable Wi-Fi. Conversion and transfers may need an internet connection even when cellular service is still available.
  • Install available operating-system updates. Newer software can add the eSIM command or fix transfer compatibility.
  • Check that the exact phone model and country support eSIM, and ask the carrier whether your plan is eligible.
  • If moving to another phone, keep both devices nearby, powered on and unlocked. Do not reset or trade in the old phone yet.
  • Know the phone passcode. Android automatic transfer also requires a screen lock.
  • Keep the physical SIM in place until the new profile has completed activation tests.
  • Have a SIM-eject tool available if your phone tray needs one. It is unnecessary on eSIM-only phones or trays that open without a tool.

Back up important information before a device transfer. A SIM stores network credentials, not your photographs, contacts or app data, so use the phone’s normal cloud or computer backup for those items.

How do I convert a physical SIM to an eSIM on an iPhone?

On a supported iPhone and carrier, conversion is done in Cellular settings and keeps the number on that iPhone.

  1. Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and install any available iOS update.
  2. Open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Service in some regions).
  3. Tap Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
  4. Choose the phone number currently assigned to the physical SIM.
  5. Tap Convert to eSIM and follow the carrier activation prompts.
  6. Wait for the line to show as active, then test a call, an SMS message and mobile data before removing the card.

Apple’s documented process requires carrier support. When the eSIM activates, the physical SIM no longer works, so leave it in the tray until testing is complete.

Why is “Convert to eSIM” missing on my iPhone?

The command can be absent because of the iPhone model, iOS version, country, plan or carrier. Update iOS, confirm that the line is eligible and check whether the carrier offers a separate “Add eSIM” download, QR code or app-based activation. If none is available, contact the carrier and request an eSIM replacement for the same number.

How do I transfer an eSIM from one iPhone to another?

iPhone-to-iPhone Quick Transfer avoids a physical card when the carrier supports it. Both phones must be close together with Bluetooth enabled, signed in to the Apple Account, and running iOS 18.4 or later.

  2. On the new phone, open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Service > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
  3. Select transfer from another iPhone.
  4. Approve the request on the old iPhone and complete any passcode or on-screen confirmation.
  5. Wait for the new line to show signal, then test calls, texts and data.

Activation deactivates the previous SIM. Do not erase the old iPhone until the new one has working service and you have confirmed that your other data has transferred or been restored.

What if Quick Transfer does not appear?

Quick Transfer availability is controlled by the carrier as well as Apple. Check Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Apple Account sign-in and the iOS version first. If the option still does not appear, use the carrier’s eSIM download, QR-code or manual reissue process instead.

How do I convert a physical SIM to an eSIM on a Google Pixel?

Google documents same-phone conversion for Pixel 8 and later. The phone must be on Wi-Fi, and the carrier must support the conversion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the Pixel to Wi-Fi and install available system updates.
  2. Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
  3. Select the physical SIM line.
  4. Tap Convert to eSIM.
  5. Complete the carrier’s activation instructions.
  6. Place a test call, send a text and open a webpage over mobile data before taking out the card.

After conversion, the physical SIM stops working. Pixel models earlier than Pixel 8 may not expose this documented conversion command; those phones generally need a carrier-issued eSIM if the carrier supports the model.

How do I transfer a Pixel or Android SIM to a new phone?

Android can offer an automatic transfer during setup, but the exact screen depends on the phone maker and carrier. Google requires Android 12 or later, current Google Play Services and a screen lock for automatic transfer.

  1. Start setting up the new phone and connect it to Wi-Fi.
  2. When setup asks about mobile service, choose the SIM-transfer option.
  3. Keep the old phone nearby and unlocked, and approve the transfer when prompted.
  4. Complete any carrier verification or activation screen.
  5. After setup, if you skipped the transfer, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Transfer SIM from another device and follow the prompts.
  6. Test voice, messaging and data on the new phone before resetting the old one.

Carrier support determines whether this transfer is automatic. If Android does not offer the option, choose a new eSIM download when presented or ask the carrier to issue a replacement profile.

  • What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
  • Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
  • How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
  • The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
  • Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
  1. Connect the Galaxy to Wi-Fi and update the phone if an update is available.
  2. Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
  3. Select the physical SIM.
  4. Choose Convert to eSIM.
  5. Follow the carrier activation directions shown on the phone.
  6. Verify a call, text and mobile-data session before removing the physical card.

Samsung says the SIM information is transferred during this process, but model and regional availability vary. If the command is absent, use the carrier’s replacement-eSIM procedure rather than repeatedly removing and reinserting the card.

What should I do when moving between iPhone and Android?

Cross-platform transfers are less predictable because the old and new phones use different transfer systems. Android’s guidance says eSIM transfer availability depends on the phone brand and carrier.

  1. Confirm with the carrier that your number and plan can be reissued as an eSIM for the destination phone.
  2. Keep the old phone working and connected until the carrier confirms the replacement is ready.
  3. On the new phone, look for Add eSIM, Download a SIM or a similar cellular setup command.
  4. Use the carrier-provided QR code, activation link or manual details exactly as supplied. Do not photograph or share an activation code publicly.
  5. Complete activation and test all three services: calls, texts and mobile data.
  6. Only then erase the old phone or discard the physical SIM.

Some carriers can transfer the profile electronically; others must retire the old profile and issue a new one. A carrier representative can also verify identity or resolve an account lock that a phone menu cannot fix.

How can I tell whether the eSIM is really working?

Check the line itself, then test each service while Wi-Fi is temporarily off.

  • Line status: Cellular or SIM settings should show the intended number or plan as active, with signal bars and the carrier name.
  • Voice: Place an outgoing call and answer an incoming call from another phone.
  • Messaging: Send and receive an SMS, not only an internet-based message.
  • Data: Turn off Wi-Fi and load a webpage or another data service. Confirm that the intended line is selected for mobile data if the phone has multiple SIMs.
  • Emergency access: Keep the phone powered and connected while you finish testing; do not rely on an unverified profile for an urgent call.

If all tests pass, remove the physical SIM with the eject tool if needed and store it securely until you are certain the number has no pending service issue. A retired card should not be reused in another phone unless the carrier explicitly reactivates it.

Why did the conversion or transfer fail?

Most failures come from eligibility, connectivity or an incomplete carrier activation rather than from the eSIM hardware itself.

The conversion option is missing

Check the phone model, operating-system version and country first. Pixel’s documented same-device conversion starts with Pixel 8, while iPhone and Galaxy availability varies by model and region. If the carrier does not support self-service conversion, request an eSIM replacement.

The transfer is stuck on verification

Keep both devices unlocked and nearby, reconnect to Wi-Fi and confirm Bluetooth is on for iPhone Quick Transfer. On Android, verify Android 12 or later, current Google Play Services and a screen lock. Restarting both phones can clear a temporary setup error, but do not reset the source phone.

The eSIM installed but has no signal

Wait for the carrier activation to finish, then toggle the affected line off and on in SIM settings. Check that the line is enabled for calls and data and that airplane mode is off. If there is still no service, the carrier must check the account and reissue or reprovision the profile.

Calls work but texts or data do not

Verify that the eSIM is the default line for the affected service, especially on dual-SIM phones. Test with Wi-Fi disabled for data. Persistent single-service failures usually require carrier-side provisioning rather than another conversion attempt.

The old SIM stopped working too soon

Activation normally disables the previous SIM. If the new eSIM has not completed, contact the carrier from another phone or over Wi-Fi and ask for the profile to be reissued; repeated physical-SIM swaps will not restore a deactivated profile.

Self-service is fastest when the menu appears and the plan is eligible. Carrier assistance is the dependable route for an unsupported model, a missing menu, a cross-platform move or an activation that fails after installation.

Should I keep the physical SIM after switching?

Keep it until the eSIM has passed call, text and data tests and any important two-factor-authentication messages arrive normally. Once the carrier confirms the eSIM is the active profile, remove the card and dispose of it securely; cutting through the chip prevents casual reuse, but follow any recycling rules in your area.

If you are selling or returning the phone, erase the device only after confirming the eSIM has either transferred to the replacement phone or been released by the carrier. An eSIM profile is stored electronically, so deleting the phone’s data does not by itself guarantee that the carrier has reactivated the old physical card.

What are the practical advantages and trade-offs of eSIM?

An eSIM removes the need to open a tray and can make a supported phone-to-phone transfer simpler. It is also useful on phones with no physical SIM slot. The trade-off is that moving service to an unsupported replacement phone may require carrier assistance instead of simply moving the card.

  • Convenience: no loose card to lose and no tray access for routine activation.
  • Transfer control: built-in tools can move a line without waiting for a mailed card, when the carrier participates.
  • Compatibility limits: model, software, country and plan eligibility all matter.
  • Recovery planning: a failed activation can leave the old SIM disabled, so retain Wi-Fi access and another way to contact the carrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch to an eSIM and keep the same phone number?

Usually yes, when the carrier issues the eSIM as a replacement for the existing line. The number belongs to the carrier account; the physical card and eSIM are two different credentials for accessing it.

Does converting to eSIM cancel my mobile plan?

Conversion changes the SIM profile, not the plan itself. Billing, contract terms and allowances remain governed by the carrier, although a replacement-eSIM fee or identity check may apply under that carrier’s policies.

Can I use two eSIMs at the same time?

That depends on the phone model, regional version and carrier. Check the device’s SIM manager for the number of active lines before converting, especially if you already use a second line.

What information should I have ready when calling my carrier?

Have the account holder’s verification details, the phone’s exact model, its IMEI or eSIM identifier if requested, and the destination phone’s operating-system version. Explaining whether you are converting on the same phone or transferring to another one helps the representative choose the correct process.
