On desktop Chrome, you can switch from conventional Google results to AI Mode from a New Tab search box, the address bar, or an AI Mode option on a results page. You can also open google.com/ai directly. To return to regular results, choose the All or standard Search tab, or begin a new query at google.com.
AI Mode is a conversational search experience: it accepts follow-up questions and, where the controls are available, text, voice, images, files, URLs, and context from one or more tabs. Availability is being rolled out by country, language, device, and account, so the controls may not appear for everyone. Google’s warning is explicit: “AI responses may include mistakes.”

What is the difference between Google Search and AI Mode?
Regular Google Search is optimized for scanning ranked links and opening the sources you choose. AI Mode is designed for a continuing question-and-answer thread, with optional context from pages, tabs, images, files, URLs, voice input, and other tools.

The practical choice is simple: use regular Search when you want to compare sources quickly; use AI Mode when you need an explanation that can be refined through several questions or grounded in content already open in Chrome.

How do I switch from a New Tab to AI Mode on desktop Chrome?
Use Chrome’s New Tab page when you are starting a fresh question. The AI Mode control appears in or beside the New Tab search box on supported accounts.
- Open Chrome and create a New Tab.
- Look at the right side of the central search box and select AI Mode.
- Type a detailed question and submit it. Chrome opens the AI Mode results page.
- Continue in the follow-up field to ask for clarification, a different format, or another angle.
Google also documents a keyboard route: press Tab until the AI Mode control is focused, then press Enter. The exact focus order can vary with extensions, accessibility settings, and Chrome updates.
What should I include in the first prompt?
State the task and the output you need rather than entering only a topic. For example, ask for “a three-step explanation of the differences between two programming methods, followed by links to the primary documentation.” A clear first question gives the follow-up thread a useful starting point.
How do follow-up questions work?
After the first answer, use the same follow-up field instead of starting a new search. Ask it to explain a term, narrow the scope, change the format, or challenge an assumption. If the answer needs information from elsewhere, add a tab, image, file, or URL through the available add-content controls.
How do I open AI Mode from the Chrome address bar?
On supported desktop versions, Chrome places an AI Mode control at the right side of the address bar. This route is useful when you are already browsing and do not want to open a separate Google results page first.
- Open Chrome and select the AI Mode control at the right of the address bar.
- Enter your question. Select the microphone icon if you want to provide voice input instead of typing.
- Submit the question to open the AI Mode response.
- For a question about the page currently displayed, use the add-content control. Chrome opens the response in the AI Mode side panel.
The side-panel route keeps the page visible while you ask about it. Depending on rollout and device, the plus menu can also let you add recent tabs, images, or files as additional sources.

Can I ask about several open tabs?
Yes, where multi-tab context is enabled. Open the plus or add-content menu, choose the recent tabs you want to include, and then ask a question that connects them. Google’s April 16, 2026 announcement says AI Mode searches can mix tabs, images, and files in one request; the controls and eligible inputs can still vary by account and platform.
How do I switch from an ordinary Google results page?
Start with a normal query at google.com. If AI Mode is available for your account, an AI Mode option appears in the Search interface.
- Enter your query at google.com and submit it.
- Select AI Mode when that option appears among the search choices.
- Continue the conversation in the AI Mode follow-up field.
If the option is not shown, open google.com/ai directly. Google also documents AI Mode in the Google app, although the visible controls depend on the app version, account, language, country, and device.
How do I use page, tab, image, file, URL, and voice context?
AI Mode can accept more than a typed query, but each input is added deliberately through a control in the interface. Start the mode first, then use the microphone or add-content button that your Chrome build presents.

Current page
While viewing a page, select the address-bar AI Mode control and then the add-content control. Chrome opens the answer in a side panel so you can ask about the page without replacing it.
Recent tabs
Open the plus menu and select the tabs that should inform the answer. Choose only the tabs relevant to the question; adding unrelated pages can make the context harder to interpret.

Images and files
Use the image or file option in the add-content menu, select the item, and then describe what you want AI Mode to do with it. The availability of each picker is controlled by the current rollout, so a missing option does not necessarily indicate a Chrome problem.
URLs
When a URL input is offered, add the address and state whether you want a summary, comparison, extraction, or answer to a specific question. Treat the resulting answer as an aid to reading the linked material, not as a substitute for checking it.
Voice
Select the microphone control in the address-bar AI Mode entry point and grant microphone access if Chrome asks. Review the transcribed question before submitting when accuracy matters, because recognition errors can change the meaning of a request.
How do I return to regular Google Search?
You do not need to change a Chrome setting to leave AI Mode. Use the Search navigation controls or start a fresh query.
- On an AI Mode page that shows Search categories, select All or the standard Search results tab.
- If those tabs are not visible, open a new tab and go to google.com.
- Enter a new query and submit it to receive conventional results.
Returning to regular Search is useful when you want to inspect several independent sources, use a specialized Search filter, or avoid carrying context from an earlier conversational thread.
Why is AI Mode missing in Chrome?
AI Mode is not available to every person, device, or location. Google says the feature is gradually expanding outside the United States and to languages beyond English, so an account can show the control on one device while another account or platform does not.

Check the browser and account
- Update Chrome to the current version offered for your operating system.
- Sign in to the Google account that you normally use for Search when sign-in is required.
- Check the account’s country and language settings; eligibility can depend on both.
- Try the New Tab, address-bar, results-page, and direct-page entry points. A control can be absent in one surface while available in another.
Check the device and rollout
Chrome’s desktop and mobile interfaces do not expose identical controls. If AI Mode is unavailable after an update and account check, the most likely explanation is that the feature has not reached that device, account, language, or region yet. Google’s documented rollout does not provide a universal date by which every account will receive it.
When a control appears but does not work
Confirm that Chrome can reach Google Search, reload the page, and retry with a simple text question. If text works but a microphone, file, image, or tab option does not, that specific input may not be enabled on your platform or may require a permission that has not been granted.
How do I hide the AI Mode button in the address bar?
You can remove the persistent address-bar control without removing AI Mode from Search or the New Tab page.
- Right-click the Chrome address bar.
- Turn off Always show AI Mode.
The control is hidden from the address bar, but supported entry points remain available. If you later want the button back, repeat the same context-menu action and re-enable the setting.
What is different on Chrome for phones and tablets?
Google Search Help documents the same basic choices on supported mobile experiences: enter a query and select the AI Mode control when it appears, or open the direct AI Mode page. Chrome’s mobile address-bar interface can also expose AI Mode and controls for the current tab, multiple tabs, the camera, the gallery, and files.
Mobile controls are more variable than desktop controls. The operating system, Chrome build, Google account, language, country, and staged rollout all affect which buttons you see. If a camera, gallery, or file picker is absent, use the text entry point or the direct AI Mode page rather than assuming the feature is broken.
How should I verify an AI Mode answer?
Use AI Mode as a starting point, then open the links it provides and compare important claims with ordinary Search results. Google’s own warning—“AI responses may include mistakes.”—applies even when an answer sounds confident or includes several citations.
- Read the linked source instead of relying only on the generated summary.
- For a question involving a changing fact, check the publication or update date on the source.
- Run the same question in regular Search when you need to compare independent pages.
- Do not share sensitive tabs or files casually. Chrome AI experiences can involve account and browsing context, so review the current controls on your Google account before adding private material.
AI Mode is most useful for organizing information, explaining unfamiliar material, and turning several selected sources into a follow-up conversation. It is less suitable as the sole authority for decisions where an incorrect detail would cause harm.

What are the main limits to remember?
- Availability is staged: the feature can vary by country, language, device, and account.
- Controls vary by surface: New Tab, address bar, results page, desktop, and mobile may show different entry points.
- Answers can be wrong: follow links and verify consequential claims.
- Context is optional but consequential: adding tabs or files gives AI Mode more material to process, so select only what is relevant and safe to share.
- No mode switch is permanent: you can move between AI Mode and conventional results through the Search interface whenever both are available.

Do I need to install a Chrome extension for AI Mode?
No. Google describes AI Mode as a built-in Chrome and Search experience, and says no AI extension is required. If the control is missing, check rollout eligibility rather than installing an extension that claims to add the official button.
Can I bookmark the direct AI Mode page?
Yes. Save https://google.com/ai as a bookmark or type it directly in the address bar whenever you want to open the mode without first submitting a conventional query. Whether it loads the full experience still depends on your account and location eligibility.
Why might the same Google account show different AI Mode controls on two devices?
The rollout is evaluated across device type, Chrome or app surface, country, language, and account. One device may expose the address-bar button while another offers only the results-page or New Tab entry point.
