Yes—if you have the wired indoor Google Nest Cam targeted by the published design, you can print a hinged cover that physically blocks the lens and leave the camera powered. The cover is an STL file, not a tested, ready-made product, and its designer—not Google—specifies PLA, PETG, ABS or nylon, 5% infill and no supports. It has not been established that the design fits every Nest model, or that it is the same camera used in the title’s personal story.

A shutter solves a different problem from the Nest app’s controls: a closed, opaque cover prevents the lens from seeing, while the camera can still be powered and may still stream or record audio unless you change those settings. Model and app compatibility matter, and Google specifically warns against covering Nest Cam Outdoor models because sensors, performance and warranty coverage may be affected.

What exactly is the 3D-printed Nest privacy fix?

The documented design is a printable “Nest cam privacy cover” by tcomben on Cults3D. The listing, published March 13, 2022, contains two STL files for a cover described for the wired indoor Google Nest Cam. It is intended to open and close over the camera rather than permanently enclosing it.

The listing describes a small piece of 1.75 mm filament used as a hinge pin. The designer suggests melting the ends of that pin to retain it. Those are the designer’s instructions, not an independently tested fit, strength or privacy result. The listing also does not establish compatibility with Nest Cam IQ, battery models, indoor/outdoor generations or third-party mounts.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Download the files only from the design page and inspect the model before printing: tcomben’s Nest cam privacy cover on Cults3D. A separate sliding webcam shutter listed for laptops and monitors is an adjacent category, not evidence that the same design fits a Nest camera: Cults3D sliding webcam privacy cover.

How does a physical cover compare with Nest’s software controls?

A shutter blocks the optical path while the camera remains powered. Software settings can stop video, audio or storage, but only where that particular camera and app expose the control. Use the following distinction before choosing a method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method What it prevents What remains possible Main limitation
Printed lens cover When fully closed and opaque, the lens cannot see the room. The camera can remain powered; microphone, network connection and previously configured storage are separate functions. Compatibility is established only for the wired indoor target described by the designer. Covering an outdoor model can affect sensors, performance and warranty.
Camera On/Off in the Nest app Stops the camera’s video function on models that provide the control. Availability and exact menu depend on the camera generation and whether it uses Home or Nest. There is no universal toggle for every Nest camera.
Microphone off Google says the camera does not stream or record audio while the microphone is off. Video can continue if video is still enabled. It does not block the lens or erase existing video history.
Audio recording off Stops audio from being saved where the setting applies. Google notes that sound may still be available in the live stream, depending on configuration. It is not the same as turning the microphone off.
Video history off For listed models, deletes saved video history and snapshots. The camera may still be able to provide a live view if other controls remain enabled. Deletion is a consequence, not merely a pause, and the feature is model-specific.
Unplugging Removes power and therefore camera operation. Nothing is running while disconnected. It is inconvenient for a camera that you want available again immediately.

Google’s general settings reference explains which controls are available by model and app: Nest camera or doorbell settings. The practical advantage of a shutter is reversibility: you can open it for monitoring without waiting for a camera to boot or reconnect. The practical disadvantage is that a cover does not automatically change audio or cloud-storage behavior.

Which Nest cameras should and should not use this cover?

Start with the exact model, not the word “Nest” on the box. The published STL is described for a wired indoor Google Nest Cam. That description is the evidence for the target; it is not a claim that the geometry fits every indoor, outdoor, battery or IQ camera.

Confirm the camera and app

  • Check the model name in the Google Home or Nest app and compare its physical shape with the design’s target.
  • Identify whether the camera was set up in the newer Google Home app or retained in the Nest app. Google says newer cameras use Home, while some older cameras keep most settings in Nest.
  • Measure the camera and mounting position before printing if the STL page does not provide dimensions that match your unit. Do not force a cover onto a lens, status light, microphone opening or mount.

Google’s outdoor tampering guidance contains an important restriction: “Important: Do not paint or cover the camera. This can affect its sensors and performance, and may void the warranty.” The warning appears in guidance for Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 1st and 2nd gen), so treat it as a specific outdoor-model warning rather than proof that every indoor camera is safe to cover. Read the complete guidance at Google’s Nest camera tampering and theft help page.

If your camera is an outdoor model, a battery model, or a model whose shape does not match the wired indoor target, do not assume this STL is appropriate. Use the model’s documented software controls or an accessory explicitly made for that model instead.

How do you print and assemble the cover?

The following workflow follows the Cults3D designer’s listed settings. They are starting instructions from the listing, not a guarantee that your printer, filament or camera will produce a safe or accurate result.

  1. Download and inspect both STL files. Open them in your slicer and verify that the parts are complete, oriented correctly and scaled to 100 percent unless the design page gives you a reason to change scale. A scale change can alter the hinge and lens clearance.
  2. Choose a listed filament. The designer names PLA, PETG, ABS or nylon. Select a material your printer is configured to handle and follow that filament manufacturer’s temperature and ventilation requirements. The listing does not identify one material as universally best.
  3. Set the listed print parameters. The designer specifies 5% infill and no supports, with a raft optional. Your slicer may expose equivalent names such as support generation and build-plate adhesion; confirm the preview does not create material inside the hinge or across the opening.
  4. Inspect the printed parts before mounting. Remove strings and loose fragments, check that the shutter moves freely and look for warping or cracks. A rough edge that touches the camera can scratch its housing or prevent the cover from closing.
  5. Install the hinge pin. Cut a small section of 1.75 mm filament for the hinge, insert it through the aligned hinge holes, then follow the designer’s suggestion to melt the ends so it stays in place. Work away from the camera and let the softened plastic cool completely.
  6. Test the motion off the camera. Open and close the shutter repeatedly. It should reach its intended closed position without excessive force and should stay open when you need the lens exposed.
  7. Fit it gently to the wired indoor camera. Keep the lens, microphones, indicator and ventilation areas clear except where the shutter is intentionally blocking the lens. Do not drill, glue or heat the camera housing to make an uncertain fit.
  8. Verify both privacy positions. With the cover closed, view the live feed from another device and confirm that the lens is genuinely blocked. With it open, confirm that the camera still provides the view you expect. If the camera reports an error, the image changes unexpectedly or the cover binds, remove it and return to the camera’s original configuration.

Printing tolerances vary, so a part that looks correct in the slicer can still be too tight or too loose. Treat the first print as a fit check rather than assuming the listing’s settings have been validated on your printer.

Does closing the shutter stop audio or cloud recording?

No. A lens cover addresses sight, not every data path. If the microphone and recording features remain enabled, the camera may continue handling audio or storing events even though the lens is blocked.

Turn off the microphone when you need no live or recorded sound

Google states that when the microphone is off, the camera does not stream or record audio. Open the camera’s audio settings in the app used by your model and switch the microphone off; the exact labels and path can differ. Google’s instructions are at Change Nest camera and doorbell audio settings.

Understand the difference between microphone and audio recording

Turning audio recording off is narrower than turning the microphone off. Google notes that, depending on configuration, sound can remain available in the live stream even when audio recording is disabled. If your requirement is no sound leaving the camera while privacy mode is active, verify that the microphone itself is off rather than relying only on a recording switch.

Be careful with video-history deletion

Google documents a video-history control for listed camera models. Turning it off deletes saved video history and snapshots, so it should not be treated as a harmless pause. Check the model-specific instructions at Delete video history and snapshots before changing the setting, especially if you may need existing footage.

Can you turn a Nest camera off in the app instead?

Sometimes. Google documents a manual Camera On/Off setting for applicable cameras, but it does not promise that every Nest Cam exposes the same switch. Newer cameras generally use Google Home; some older cameras that were first set up in Nest retain most settings there.

  1. Open the app associated with the camera and select the specific camera, not a general household device.
  2. Open that camera’s settings and look for the documented Camera On/Off control or an equivalent camera-status switch.
  3. Turn the camera off, then verify from the live-view screen that the camera is no longer providing video.
  4. When monitoring is needed again, return to the same setting and turn it on. If the control is absent, do not substitute an unrelated audio or video-history switch; use the physical cover for the wired indoor target or disconnect power.

Because menus change with model and app, use Google’s current model-specific reference rather than following a path copied from a different Nest generation: Nest camera or doorbell settings.

What privacy does a cover provide—and what does it not provide?

A correctly closed, opaque shutter creates a physical barrier between the lens and the room. That is stronger evidence of “the lens cannot see through this opening” than a software setting whose availability or state you have not verified. It does not prove that the camera is electrically off, that its microphone is inactive, or that previously stored footage has been deleted.

Google’s Privacy Hub says video and audio processing depends on the camera features and settings you enable. If you choose video storage, footage may be stored. The same guidance notes that local notice or consent obligations can apply depending on where you live and how you use the camera. Read the applicable privacy information at Google Home and Nest Privacy Hub.

  • Use the shutter when the immediate concern is visual access to a room.
  • Turn off the microphone when people must not be heard through the camera.
  • Review storage and history settings when the concern is saved footage rather than live viewing.
  • Tell household members, guests or workers about the camera and follow local notice or consent rules where they apply.

What can go wrong, and how do you recover?

The cover does not fit

Stop before applying force. Recheck that the camera is the wired indoor model described by the listing, that the STL was not rescaled, and that the print has not warped. A loose or inaccurate part is a reason to remove it, not to glue it to the housing.

The shutter blocks a sensor or causes errors

Remove the cover and test the camera in its original state. Google’s outdoor guidance specifically warns that covering can affect sensors and performance; even for an indoor experiment, an error or degraded operation means the accessory is not acceptable for your setup.

The hinge is stiff or breaks

Do not force the camera mount while trying to free it. Remove the printed part, inspect the hinge for stringing or cracks, and reprint or adjust the fit in the slicer. The designer’s 1.75 mm filament pin is a construction suggestion, not a guarantee that every filament diameter or print tolerance will work.

The app still shows the camera as active

That is expected when only the lens is covered. A shutter does not change the app’s camera status. If you need the camera function disabled as well, use the model’s Camera On/Off control when available, turn off the microphone for audio privacy, or disconnect power.

You need a ready-made product

The documented source is a printable file, not a verified retail cover or a confirmed marketplace listing. Search results that use phrases such as “3D printed Nest Cam Indoor privacy cover” may describe different designs or models. Before buying, require the seller to identify the exact Nest generation and show how the cover clears the lens, microphones, status light and mount.

Is printing better than unplugging or using software?

Choose based on the kind of privacy you need and how often you switch modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Your priority Most suitable first choice Why Check before relying on it
Instant visual privacy several times a day Physical shutter for the compatible wired indoor model It opens and closes without repeatedly removing the power cable. Confirm the shutter fully blocks the lens and does not interfere with operation.
No camera processing at all Power disconnection Removing power is unambiguous. Plan how the camera will reconnect and resume monitoring.
No video through an app-supported model Camera On/Off setting It avoids a physical accessory when Google exposes the control. Verify that your exact model and app provide the switch.
No sound Microphone off Google says audio is not streamed or recorded while the microphone is off. Do not confuse this with audio recording off, which can leave live sound available.
Remove saved clips and snapshots Video-history control for supported models It addresses stored history rather than only future viewing. Understand that turning history off deletes saved history and snapshots.

A Google Nest Hub Max is a different device with its own physical privacy switch; Google documents that switch separately at Stream your security camera using a Nest display and streaming devices. Do not treat that hardware control as evidence that a Nest Cam has the same mechanism.

What should you check before making this your routine?

  • Model: Is the camera the wired indoor unit named by the STL listing?
  • Physical fit: Does the printed part close over the lens without touching other openings or the mount?
  • App state: If you also use software controls, can you identify the camera’s current Home or Nest settings?
  • Audio: Is the microphone off when sound privacy is required?
  • History: Have you decided whether existing clips must be retained before changing video-history settings?
  • Outdoor caution: Is the camera outdoors or a model covered by Google’s warning? If so, do not assume the indoor design is suitable.
  • Legal notice: Have you handled any local notice or consent obligations for recording in your location?

The most defensible use of this project is narrow: print and test the designer’s cover on the wired indoor Nest Cam it names, use it as a reversible visual barrier, and manage audio, software status and stored history separately. If your model or use case falls outside that description, rely on controls and accessories documented for that exact camera rather than forcing a generic shutter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Nest camera’s status light turn off when the printed cover is closed?

The design listing does not document how its shutter interacts with an indicator light, and Google’s camera settings pages do not establish that a physical cover changes the light. Check the live view and the indicator on your own model; do not interpret a dark or lit LED as proof that audio, video processing or storage has stopped.

Can I use the same STL on a Nest Cam IQ or battery camera?

No compatibility is established for those models. The published design names the wired indoor Google Nest Cam, so an IQ or battery camera should be treated as a different fit unless the designer or manufacturer explicitly confirms it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does covering the lens delete clips that were already saved?

No. A physical shutter changes what the lens can see from that point forward; it does not remove video history or snapshots already stored. Use Google’s history controls separately, and understand their deletion consequences before changing them.

What if I need privacy for guests but still want an alarm notification?

A covered lens can still leave the camera powered, but you should decide separately whether audio, live video and event storage remain enabled. Explain the camera’s operation to guests and follow any local notice or consent requirements that apply to recording in your location.
