Spam events in Google Calendar usually aren’t random. They’re almost always triggered by one of three things: an unknown calendar subscription, a flood of malicious email invitations, or a compromised Google account that keeps re-adding the same source.
The fastest fix is to stop the current spam from multiplying (delete, unsubscribe, report, and block), then remove the source so it can’t keep sending events. After that, harden your account and quarantine invite emails so the problem doesn’t return.

Use the sections below like a checklist. If you do all the high-impact steps, you should see the spam drop to zero.
Why spam events land in Google Calendar
Google Calendar is fed by multiple inputs. Most spam comes from email invitations (with an iCalendar payload) or from calendar subscriptions you inadvertently added via a link or a prompt.

- Calendar subscriptions: A malicious actor convinces you to subscribe to a calendar URL. Once subscribed, events can appear repeatedly.
- Email invites: Spam emails send event invitations. If you have “Automatically add invitations to my calendar” enabled, or if the invites are accepted/accepted by a rule, they show up.
- Account compromise: If someone gets access to your Google account, they can add subscriptions, accept invites, or modify settings.
If you understand which category you’re dealing with, you can apply the right fix instead of playing whack-a-mole.
Immediate actions to stop the next wave
Before digging into settings, reduce the damage right now. These steps target repeat offenders and help Google improve spam detection.
Delete the spam events and cancel any calendar subscriptions
Start with one or two events that represent the spam source. Deleting a single event is rarely enough if you’re subscribed to a calendar.
- Open Google Calendar on the web: calendar.google.com.
- Use the left sidebar to locate the event’s calendar (or click the event to see which calendar it belongs to).
- Click the spam event, then click Delete (or Remove depending on the event type).
- If the event belongs to an unknown calendar under Other calendars, remove the whole subscription (see the next main section).
For subscriptions, you usually need to unsubscribe/remove the calendar—not just delete a single event.
Report spam so Google learns the pattern
Reporting trains Google’s systems and can reduce similar invitations. For invites, you’ll typically see report options on the event notification.
- Open the spam invite/event on the web.
- Choose the option to Report spam (wording can vary by invite type).
- Also report the sender email from Gmail when possible (skip ahead to the Gmail filter section for automation).
If the same source keeps returning, reporting plus blocking works better than reporting alone.
Block the sender when the spam arrives via email invites
If your spam events arrive from specific email addresses, blocking those senders stops more invites before you even see them.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the spam email in Gmail.
- Click the sender name/address.
- Choose Block (or Block [sender]).
- Mark the email as spam if it’s not already marked.
Blocking is most effective when spam has a consistent From address or domain.
Find and remove the source (the calendar that’s sending events)
Most persistent spam is caused by an unwanted calendar subscription. Your goal is to identify which calendar owns the spam events and remove it.
Check “Other calendars” and remove unknown subscriptions
On Google Calendar, subscribed calendars are often listed under Other calendars.

- In Google Calendar on the web, look at the left sidebar.
- Expand Other calendars.
- Find calendars that you don’t recognize (common signs: names unrelated to your work, adult/crypto/marketing-looking names, or calendars you never added).
- Hover the calendar name and click the three-dot menu (⋮) if available.
- Select Remove or Unsubscribe.
Don’t worry about removing your own calendars; only remove items you don’t recognize.
Unsubscribe from calendar links you never intended to add
If you suspect a one-time click or phishing flow, focus on finding the subscription entry that matches the spam events.
- Click a spam event and confirm the calendar name shown in the event details.
- Go to the left sidebar and locate that exact calendar name under Other calendars (or under the calendar color legend).
- Remove/unsubscribe from that calendar.
- After removing it, delete one or two older spam events that were already imported.
If the calendar name doesn’t match what you see, the spam may come from email invites instead of a subscription.
Clean up recurring invitations and guest-driven events
Some spam appears as events you were “invited” to, potentially set as recurring. If you delete only one instance, the series may continue.
- Open a spam event.
- If it’s part of a series, choose the option to delete/remove the entire series.
- Look for “Add to calendar,” “Accept,” or “Join” actions in the invite flow—avoid clicking those.
For guest-driven events, check whether you are listed as a guest on the series. Removing your attendance often stops future instances.

Turn down notifications and invitations that create noise
Spam is annoying even when you delete it. Reducing invitations and lowering how notifications behave can help you regain control.
Disable email alerts for event invitations (web)
Go to Calendar settings and turn off invitation notifications that feed your inbox. This won’t stop a subscription from injecting events, but it reduces the volume.
- Open Google Calendar on the web.
- Click the gear icon ⚙️ (top right) → Settings.
- On the left, find Event settings.
- Adjust notification settings related to event invitations and email notifications.
- Save changes if prompted.
UI wording varies slightly by account type, but the setting is typically under Event settings and relates to notifications.
Adjust notification settings for specific spam patterns
Spam often targets “one-click” behavior. Review these behaviors to avoid accidental acceptance.
- Make sure you’re not using a rule that auto-accepts invites.
- Turn off any notification routes that create repeated email alerts for the same invite source.
- If you use multiple Google accounts in one browser profile, confirm you’re editing the correct account’s calendar settings.
Harden your Google account to prevent re-infection
If the spam keeps coming back after you remove the calendar or delete events, assume your account may have been accessed. Treat this as a security issue.

Secure your password and enable 2-Step Verification
Do this even if you’re not sure you’re compromised—this is the most effective protection.
- Go to Google Account Security: myaccount.google.com/security.
- Update your password if it hasn’t been changed recently.
- Under Signing in to Google, enable 2-Step Verification.
- Prefer an authenticator app or security key if available.
Review connected apps and sign-in devices
Spammers sometimes piggyback on OAuth-connected apps or browser sessions. Review anything you don’t recognize.
- In the same Security area, check Your devices.
- Sign out of unknown devices.
- Find Third-party access → Manage third-party access.
- Remove permissions from suspicious apps or services.
If you see an app you don’t remember granting, revoke access immediately.

Check for malicious calendar/notification forwarding
Forwarding isn’t always obvious. Verify that you don’t have add-ons or integrations that fetch or mirror calendar activity.
- Re-check connected apps and browser extensions (on the device you use for Calendar).
- Remove any calendar-related add-ons you can’t explain.
- On Workspace accounts, ask an admin to check audit logs if available.
Use Gmail filters to automatically quarantine calendar invite emails
If spam events arrive through email invitations, Gmail filters can stop them before they become calendar events. This is the long-term fix that reduces repeat work.
Create a Gmail filter for Calendar invite spam
You’ll create a rule based on sender/domain and common keywords found in the spam email. Gmail filters work best when you choose consistent criteria.
- Open Gmail on the web: mail.google.com.
- Click the search bar drop-down (sliders icon) → Create a filter.
- In From, enter a suspicious sender address or domain (e.g.,
example.com). - In Subject, try keywords you see in spam (examples:
invitation,calendar,meeting,event). - Click Create filter.
- Choose Delete it or Skip the Inbox (Archive it). For safety while testing, use Skip the Inbox first.
- Optionally select Also apply filter to matching conversations.
- Confirm Create filter.
Use multiple criteria (From, subject, and keywords)
Most spam uses templates. You can improve accuracy by stacking criteria rather than filtering only by a single sender.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- From: Use a domain instead of a full email when multiple addresses are used.
- Subject: Include a phrase you reliably see in the spam.
- Has the words: Add terms like invitation, accept, or a recurring promo keyword.
If you’re filtering too aggressively and missing legit invites, narrow criteria and re-check the filter matches.
Device-specific steps (Google Calendar on iPhone and iPad)
Google Calendar spam can show up differently depending on whether you use the Google Calendar app, Apple’s Calendar app with Google accounts, or browser sync.
Remove the spam events from the iOS Calendar list
Use deletion on the device only for cleanup; for the root cause, remove the source on the web when possible.

Notifications won’t stop spam from being added, but they’ll stop the “pinging” while you fix the source.

If you followed the basics and the spam still appears, use these targeted checks. Most recurrences come from subscription leftovers, missed invite settings, or compromised access.
Spam keeps recurring even after deleting events
That usually means you’re subscribed to a calendar or the series is still active.
- Confirm whether each spam event belongs to a shared/other calendar.
- On the web, remove the calendar under Other calendars.
- Delete the series (not just one occurrence) if the event is recurring.
New spam calendar appears after you sign in
That’s a strong sign of account compromise or a persistent third-party integration.

Events appear on one device but not others
Sync behavior can differ. One device might have a stale cache or different account selection.
- Confirm you’re using the same Google account on each device.
- Update the Google Calendar app.
- Force-refresh sync (open Calendar, pull to refresh on iOS; restart app).
- Re-check the calendar’s visibility toggles on the left sidebar.
You can’t find the calendar source in “Other calendars”
In some cases, spam is coming from email invites rather than a calendar subscription, or the event is being added to a calendar you didn’t expect.
- Click a spam event and check the calendar name shown in details.
- Look for the event in your main calendar view and see what it’s assigned to.
- Create Gmail filters for the sender/domain used by the invite emails.
- Re-check invitation settings under Calendar Event settings.
Alternatives and advanced options
If you’re dealing with high-volume spam, there are more structured ways to keep your schedule clean.
Use multiple calendars to isolate shared calendars
Keep your personal calendar separate from any “subscribed” or externally managed calendars. Then you can remove the bad source with minimal disruption.

- Hide untrusted calendars by default.
- Only enable visibility when you trust the source.
Consider using Google Workspace controls (if applicable)
If you’re on Google Workspace, admins can often enforce stricter invite handling and spam controls. Ask your IT team about invite governance and calendar subscription restrictions.

Automate cleanup with scripts (carefully)
Advanced users can automate reporting and cleanup using the Google Calendar API or scripts. Be cautious: automation can delete legit events if your filters are too broad.
If you go this route, restrict by sender/calendar name patterns first, test on a small date range, and keep a log. Many teams start with a simple audit script using the API, then move to deletion once the criteria are proven.
Bottom Line
To stop spam events in Google Calendar, you need both cleanup and prevention. Delete spam, remove unknown calendar subscriptions, and report the source. Then secure your account and quarantine invite emails with Gmail filters.
If you do the source removal on the web plus account hardening, spam typically drops quickly and stays down.
FAQs
Why do spam events keep showing up even after I delete them?
Most commonly you’re still subscribed to a spam calendar or the event series keeps generating new occurrences. Remove the calendar under Other calendars and delete the full series.
Can I stop all calendar invitations from unknown senders?
You can reduce invitation noise via Calendar event notification settings and Gmail filtering. Fully blocking all unknown invites is not always a single toggle, so combine invitation handling with Gmail filters for the most reliable outcome.
Will blocking a sender on Gmail stop the calendar spam?
It helps when spam uses the same From address or domain. If the spam rotates addresses, filters based on keywords and domains usually work better than a single block.
Is spam in Google Calendar a sign my account was hacked?
It can be. If spam calendars reappear after you remove them or you see new items you never interacted with, treat it as a compromise risk and review security, connected apps, and sign-in devices immediately.
Does changing iPhone notifications fix Google Calendar spam?
No—notification changes only reduce alerts. You still need to remove the spam source (subscription or invite mechanism) and harden your account.
