Meta’s published guidance does not establish a general switch that prevents conversations with Meta AI from being used as recommendation signals. Meta announced that interactions with its AI features would begin informing content and advertising recommendations on December 16, 2025, with a rollout covering most regions. You can still limit other data streams and tune what you see: review the “Activity from other businesses” control in Accounts Center, adjust Ads Preferences and Feed controls, and treat chat deletion as a separate action. Those settings do not amount to a confirmed, complete opt-out from personalization based on AI interactions.
Can I completely stop Meta AI from using my chats to personalize what I see?
Not through a general opt-out documented in Meta’s announcements cited here. Meta says it uses interactions with its AI features to improve recommendations for content and ads, but the company has not described a setting that broadly blocks every use of those interactions as personalization signals.

That limitation matters because several controls in Meta’s apps address different data sources. Turning off one source does not automatically disable the others, and deleting a conversation is not the same as changing recommendation settings.
What Meta has actually announced
In an October 2025 announcement, Meta said the change would start on December 16, 2025 and roll out in most regions. The company said the purpose was to make recommendations more relevant across its platforms. Meta reported that more than 1 billion people used Meta AI monthly in that announcement; that is a dated company figure, not an independently verified current count.

“Whether it’s a voice chat or a text exchange with our AI features, this update will help us improve the recommendations we provide for people across our platforms so they’re more likely to see content they’re actually interested in — and less of the content they’re not.”
Meta also said conversations about certain sensitive subjects would not be used to show ads. The statement is narrower than a promise that those conversations are excluded from every form of content personalization.

Use the control that matches the data source you want to limit. The following distinctions are the safest way to avoid assuming that one setting does more than Meta says it does.
| Control or action | Data source it addresses | What Meta says it can change | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-interaction recommendations | Text or voice interactions with Meta AI features | Meta says these interactions can inform content and ad recommendations beginning December 16, 2025. | A general, documented switch to stop all use of those interactions as personalization signals. |
| Activity from other businesses | Information businesses share with Meta about your activity on their websites and apps | Meta’s 2026 announcement describes using the setting to manage personalization of ads and non-ad content, including AI responses. | Deletion of the businesses’ data, or an opt-out from personalization based on your conversations with Meta AI. |
| Ads Preferences | Ad-topic and advertising-delivery preferences in your Meta account | Lets you review and adjust advertising choices that Meta exposes in the account controls. | Proof that AI interactions stop being used as recommendation inputs. |
| Feed controls | How content is ranked or shown in feeds | Lets you tune the content experience using the controls available in the relevant Meta app. | Removal of the underlying AI-interaction data or a universal personalization opt-out. |
| Deleting an AI chat | Information shared in a particular AI conversation | Meta’s 2023 privacy article described a chat-reset command for Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp. | Deletion of all recommendation data, or prevention of future personalization from other interactions. |
How do I review “Activity from other businesses”?
This setting concerns off-platform activity that businesses send to Meta, not the contents of your Meta AI conversations. If the option is available in your account, review it to decide whether Meta may use that business-provided information for personalized ads and other content.

- Open a Meta app and enter Accounts Center. Accounts Center is Meta’s shared account-settings area, although the surrounding menus can differ between Facebook, Instagram and other products.
- Search for “Activity from other businesses.” Meta may use a current equivalent label as the rollout and interface change. The exact menu sequence and wording are not established for every app or country.
- Read the description before changing the option. Confirm that the setting refers to activity businesses share with Meta and note whether the available choice controls personalized ads, non-ad content, AI responses, or a combination.
- Choose the least-permissive option that fits your preference, then save it if the app asks. A change here governs that business-activity stream; it should not be described as disabling personalization based on your AI chats.
- Recheck the setting after a rollout or app update. Meta announced a staged expansion, so labels and availability can change by country and account.
Where and when is the control available?
Meta’s June 2026 announcement said the expanded control would begin rolling out in the United States and a number of other countries in July 2026, followed by additional countries. It did not establish availability in every country or provide a universal, current menu path. If you cannot find the setting, that may reflect regional rollout rather than an error in your account.
How can I reduce the recommendations I see even without a full AI opt-out?
Use Ads Preferences and the feed-level controls in each Meta app to change the recommendations delivered to you. These tools can affect what appears on screen, but Meta’s October 2025 announcement does not say that they switch off the use of AI interactions as signals behind the scenes.
Review Ads Preferences
- Open the account or privacy settings area in the Meta app you use and select Ads Preferences, or the current equivalent label.
- Review the ad topics, advertiser controls and personalization choices that Meta presents for your account.
- Reduce topics or categories you do not want emphasized, and save each change where required.
- Test the result over subsequent sessions. A preference can change ad selection without deleting the interaction data that Meta may hold.
Use feed controls deliberately
- When a post or recommendation is irrelevant, use the app’s feedback or “not interested” control if offered.
- Adjust follow, unfollow, favorite or similar feed-ranking options available in that product.
- Remember that feed feedback changes ranking signals; it is not a request to erase an AI conversation.
Because Meta has not documented these controls as an AI-interaction opt-out, describe the result accurately: you are tuning ads and feed recommendations, not proving that Meta no longer processes AI interactions for personalization.
Does deleting a Meta AI chat stop personalization?
No. Deleting a conversation and changing recommendation personalization are separate actions. A deleted chat may no longer be available in the conversation history, while other signals—such as later AI interactions or account activity—can remain relevant to Meta’s systems.

The historical reset instruction
Meta’s 2023 privacy article described typing /reset-ai in an AI conversation on Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp to delete information shared in that chat. That article does not say the command deletes all recommendation data or disables future use of interactions. Because the instruction is old and Meta’s interfaces change, verify the current Help Center directions in the app before relying on the command.
What a chat deletion request cannot be assumed to do
- It cannot be assumed to erase information already used in aggregated or separate recommendation systems.
- It cannot be assumed to remove profile details, likes, follows or other activity that Meta may use for personalization.
- It cannot be assumed to block future AI interactions from becoming recommendation signals.
How does Meta AI personalize the responses it gives me?
Response personalization is a separate question from the recommendations shown in feeds or ads. Meta says the assistant may use information you chose to share on Meta products—such as profile details and content you liked or engaged with—to personalize its replies.
That means a request can feel tailored even when you have changed an advertising preference. Conversely, limiting off-platform business activity can affect the information Meta uses for personalization without deleting what you directly told the assistant. Treat “personalized response,” “personalized content,” and “personalized ad” as related but distinct outcomes.
Are conversations about sensitive subjects excluded?
Meta’s October 2025 announcement said conversations about certain sensitive subjects would not be used to show ads. The announcement did not say those subjects are excluded from every type of content personalization or from every internal use of the interaction.

Do not translate the ad-specific statement into a blanket privacy guarantee. If a conversation involves sensitive information, avoid sharing details you do not want stored or reused, and use the current in-app privacy and deletion instructions available to your account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if the setting is missing or the label is different?
Missing controls are especially likely during a staged rollout. Work through these checks before assuming that a setting has been removed or that another control is an equivalent substitute.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check the product. Open Accounts Center from the Meta app where you manage the account, rather than relying on a menu path copied from another product.
- Search by meaning, not only by exact wording. Look for “Activity from other businesses” and closely related privacy or activity labels; Meta may revise names as the feature expands.
- Confirm your region and account type. The June 2026 announcement described an initial US and selected-country rollout, not worldwide availability on a single date.
- Update the app and reopen Accounts Center. A staged server-side rollout can also change what appears without an app reinstall.
- Do not substitute Ads Preferences or Feed controls without noting the difference. Those controls can tune what you see, but they are not documented as a complete AI-interaction opt-out.
- Record the date and visible wording. Keeping a screenshot or written note of the option you changed helps you identify later interface changes and prevents confusion between business-activity data and AI-chat data.
What does Meta’s rollout mean for privacy decisions?
Meta’s announcements describe a broad recommendation practice rather than a single product-specific feature. In October 2025, the company said AI interactions would help improve recommendations across its platforms. In June 2026, it said it personalizes experiences for “3.5 billion people” who use its apps and services every day; that is a company-reported figure covering its services, not necessarily unique Meta AI users.
The practical implication is to evaluate each data stream separately. If your priority is reducing off-platform information, focus on Activity from other businesses. If your priority is changing visible ads and feeds, use Ads Preferences and feed controls. If your priority is removing a particular conversation, use the current chat-deletion process. None of those choices is established as a universal block on AI-interaction-based personalization.

A practical checklist for limiting Meta AI personalization
- Decide whether your concern is AI chats, business-shared activity, ads, feed ranking, or stored chat content.
- Review Accounts Center for Activity from other businesses and read its current scope before changing it.
- Adjust Ads Preferences for advertising topics and delivery choices.
- Use feed feedback tools to reduce unwanted recommendations.
- Delete or reset a specific AI chat only after checking the current in-app instructions.
- Keep the distinction between deleting a chat and disabling personalization.
- Check rollout and regional availability before concluding that a control is unavailable.
- Do not assume that an ad-specific sensitive-topic exception covers non-ad content or every form of personalization.
What is the most accurate answer to “Does Meta use my AI chats for ads?”
Meta says interactions with its AI features can inform content and ad recommendations beginning December 16, 2025, with a rollout in most regions. It also says certain sensitive-topic conversations will not be used to show ads. The company has not documented a general setting in the cited material that lets everyone opt out of all recommendation use of AI interactions.
Therefore, changing Ads Preferences may alter the ads you receive, and reviewing Activity from other businesses may limit a different data stream, but neither action should be presented as proof that your AI chats are no longer used as recommendation signals.

Will turning off “Activity from other businesses” delete the activity businesses already shared?
The announcement describes the control as managing how that information is used for personalization, not as a deletion mechanism. It does not establish how long previously received data is retained or whether a separate deletion request is available.
Why can an AI reply still seem personalized after I change my ad settings?
Meta says the assistant may draw on information you chose to share on its products, including profile details and content you liked or engaged with. Ad preferences govern advertising choices and do not necessarily change those response-personalization inputs.
Does the sensitive-topic exception cover recommendations in my feed?
Meta’s statement is specifically about showing ads. It does not say that the same conversations are excluded from non-ad content recommendations or every other form of personalization.
Is the /reset-ai command guaranteed to work in every Meta app today?
No current, universal guarantee is established by the 2023 article that described it. Interface and feature availability can change, so verify the command or replacement procedure in the current Help Center for Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp.
What should I check after Meta changes the privacy menus?
Look again in Accounts Center for the business-activity control and read its description rather than assuming an old label still has the same scope. Reconfirm which data source each setting covers, because a renamed control may still address off-platform business activity rather than AI conversations.
