To stop a game launcher from opening when you sign in to Windows 10 or 11, go to Start > Settings > Apps > Startup and switch the launcher off. If it is missing, disable it in Task Manager > Startup apps. These controls prevent automatic startup without uninstalling the launcher; you can still open it yourself when you want to play.

For a launcher with its own startup preference, you can turn that off too. If the app still opens, check for a second startup route—such as a Windows entry or Startup-folder shortcut—before trying advanced troubleshooting.

How do I stop a game launcher from starting with Windows?

Use Windows’ built-in startup controls first. Settings is the clearest route for a listed app; Task Manager is the alternative if the launcher does not appear in Settings or if you want to see its startup-impact label.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
  2. Find the launcher, such as Steam or Epic Games Launcher, and switch its setting to Off.
  3. If it is not listed, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then select Startup apps.
  4. Select the launcher and choose Disable. Microsoft’s instruction is: “Select Disable to prevent the app from starting automatically when you sign in.”
  5. Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, to check that the launcher no longer opens on its own.

Microsoft says Task Manager shows the same startup-app list as Settings and also adds startup-impact information. The labels and locations described here apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; the steps may differ in other Windows versions.

What the Windows toggle changes

Disabling a startup entry changes whether Windows automatically starts that app when you sign in. It does not uninstall the game or launcher. In normal use, you can still start the launcher manually from Start, search, or its shortcut.

The Windows setting is a good first choice because it is visible, easy to reverse, and does not require changing registry values. If the launcher has its own startup preference, you can use that too; for a launcher that still appears, check both places before moving to more advanced troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of the Settings or Task Manager control as a way to disable one listed startup app, not a command to remove every component associated with a game. If you see a separate helper or service, do not assume that it is safe or necessary to disable without identifying it. The same caution applies to unfamiliar entries with gaming-related names.

Settings or Task Manager: which should I use?

Both are primary Windows controls for startup apps. Start with Settings if you know the launcher’s name and simply want to switch it off. Task Manager is useful when the app is missing from Settings or when comparing the startup-impact labels of listed items. The choice is about finding and managing the entry; neither method uninstalls the launcher.

After changing a toggle, sign out and back in or restart Windows to verify the result. That check distinguishes an app that still starts automatically from one that was already open, or that you launched yourself. If it still appears after you sign in, look for another enabled route instead of repeatedly changing the same setting.

How do I stop Steam from opening automatically?

Steam has a dedicated preference inside its client. With Steam open, choose Steam > Settings > Interface, then clear Run Steam when my computer starts. This is Steam’s documented support procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Steam.
  2. Open Steam > Settings > Interface.
  3. Clear Run Steam when my computer starts.
  4. Close Steam, then sign out or restart Windows to confirm it no longer launches automatically.

If that preference is already clear but Steam still opens at sign-in, check the Windows startup list as well: a separate Windows entry or shortcut may also be responsible. Switch Steam off in Settings > Apps > Startup, or disable it under Task Manager > Startup apps if it appears there.

This gives you two places to check: Steam’s own checkbox and Windows’ startup-app controls. You do not need to uninstall Steam to stop it opening automatically. You can still launch it when you want to play, while any related functions that depend on Steam being open may wait until you start it.

How do I stop Epic Games Launcher from starting with Windows?

The control depends on which Epic launcher version you have. The legacy client has a setting under the player icon; Epic Games Launcher Preview uses a differently named option in General settings. Windows Startup apps is another documented route.

Legacy Epic Games Launcher

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher and select the player icon.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Clear Run When My Computer Starts.

Epic Games Launcher Preview

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher Preview and select the Epic Games logo.
  2. Choose Settings > General.
  3. Clear Run launcher on startup.

Use Windows Startup apps

Epic also documents disabling its Windows startup entry through Task Manager:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Open Startup apps.
  3. Right-click EpicGamesLauncher and select Disable.

Epic’s menu labels differ between the legacy and Preview clients, so use the matching path rather than expecting one setting name in both. If the client preference does not stop automatic opening, check the Windows entry too.

The Windows method is a useful fallback if you cannot find the client’s own option or its menu differs from these paths. Conversely, if you disable the Windows entry but Epic still launches, check the matching in-app preference and whether a Startup-folder shortcut is responsible. Avoid disabling a similarly named entry unless you recognize what it launches.

What about Xbox, EA, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Riot Client, and other launchers?

For launchers without a documented path here, first look in their own settings for a startup option, then use Windows Startup apps. Menu wording and behavior can change between software versions, so Windows’ Settings or Task Manager controls are the more stable fallback documented by Microsoft.

  • Look for an option named Start with Windows, Open on startup, Launch at login, or Run when my computer starts.
  • Turn off the launcher’s in-app setting if you find one.
  • Check Start > Settings > Apps > Startup and switch off its entry if listed.
  • If it is absent from Settings, check Task Manager > Startup apps.

Use the name of the software you recognize rather than disabling every gaming-related entry. A launcher may have a separate helper or service, and disabling an unfamiliar component can have effects beyond simply delaying the launcher window.

The in-app option is usually the most direct choice for changing one launcher’s own behavior. The Windows control is broader in visibility: it lets you manage a listed startup app even when you do not know where its preference is in the client. If neither control explains why it starts, check the Startup folders described below before making more involved changes.

Why is a launcher missing from Startup apps?

Some programs start through shortcuts in a Windows Startup folder rather than a visible entry in the usual list. Microsoft identifies the current-user and all-users Startup folders as places to check when an app is absent.

Check the Startup folders

  1. Press Win + R to open Run.
  2. Enter shell:startup and press Enter to open the current user’s Startup folder.
  3. Look for a shortcut to the unwanted launcher. If you recognize it, remove that shortcut from the folder.
  4. To inspect the folder that applies to all users, repeat the process with shell:common startup.

The two commands point to different scopes: shell:startup opens the current user’s Startup folder, while shell:common startup opens the folder for all users. Check the one that matches where the shortcut may have been added. Remove only a shortcut you can identify as belonging to the launcher you want to stop.

Removing a shortcut from a Startup folder is different from uninstalling the launcher: it removes that particular automatic-start route. If the program still opens, another startup mechanism may be enabled, so check its own preference and Windows Startup apps as well.

Registry entries are an advanced last resort

Microsoft also lists startup Run keys at HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun, HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun, and HKLMSoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun. These are registry locations, not ordinary startup-app toggles. Editing the registry can have unintended consequences, so back it up before making changes and do not remove entries unless you can identify what they launch.

For most people, switching off a recognized entry in Settings or Task Manager is safer and simpler than editing the registry. The Run keys are relevant when a program is configured to start there and cannot be controlled through the usual list or its own setting.

The paths above cover different registry scopes, so do not treat a value name alone as enough information to decide that it is unwanted. Registry editing is less visible and less easily reversed than switching a Windows startup toggle or clearing an app checkbox. If you cannot identify the program an entry points to, leave it alone and continue with the built-in controls or get help from someone who can assess it.

Which startup items should I disable?

Prioritize launchers you recognize and do not need at sign-in. Task Manager’s impact label can help identify which entries use more CPU time or disk activity during startup, but it is not a measurement of game frame rate or a promise of faster gameplay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Task Manager label Microsoft’s startup measurement What it tells you
High impact More than 1 second of CPU time or more than 3 MB of disk I/O at startup The app’s measured startup activity was high under Microsoft’s definition.
Medium impact 300 ms–1,000 ms of CPU time or 300 KB–3 MB of disk I/O at startup The app falls within Microsoft’s medium startup-activity range.
Low impact Below 300 ms of CPU time and below 300 KB of disk I/O at startup The app’s measured startup activity was low under Microsoft’s definition.

These thresholds are Microsoft Learn’s definitions published in 2020. They describe CPU and disk activity during startup, not how much time you will save by disabling an item, whether Windows will boot noticeably faster, or how well a game will run once launched.

Use the label as one piece of context rather than a ranking of which programs are safe to turn off. A high-impact launcher may be a sensible candidate if you do not need it at sign-in, but impact alone does not tell you what features you rely on. A low-impact item can still be something you want available automatically. Decide based on whether you recognize the app and need its startup behavior.

Consider what you may delay

Turning off a launcher’s startup entry can also delay functions that depend on the launcher or its services. Depending on the software version and configuration, updates, cloud synchronization, notifications, controller support, or anti-cheat initialization may not be available until the launcher or relevant service starts. The exact effects are not universal; start the launcher manually if a needed function is unavailable.

In practical terms, disabling startup changes when the launcher is opened, not whether you can use it. If you want its services or features while playing, start the launcher before using the game or feature that depends on it. If an update, sync, or notification does not happen before you open the launcher, that may reflect the change in startup timing rather than an uninstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the launcher still opens after I disable it?

Check for more than one route to startup before changing advanced settings. A launcher can have an in-app preference, a Windows startup entry, or a Startup-folder shortcut; disabling one does not necessarily disable another.

  1. Confirm the launcher’s own startup option is off, if it has one.
  2. Check Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager > Startup apps for a separate entry.
  3. Inspect the current-user and all-users Startup folders using shell:startup and shell:common startup.
  4. If the issue appears to involve another startup conflict, use a clean boot to isolate it rather than randomly disabling unknown items.

Work through these checks in order, changing only entries you recognize. If you find a launcher entry in Windows after changing its own setting, disable that Windows entry too. If the launcher is absent from both Windows lists, the Startup folders are the next place to look. This approach keeps the troubleshooting focused on the specific app instead of changing unrelated startup items.

Use clean boot only to diagnose a conflict

Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure uses msconfig, hides Microsoft services, disables selected services, and disables selected Startup apps through Task Manager before restarting. This starts Windows with a reduced set of services and startup programs so you can isolate a cause; it is a diagnostic state, not the normal way to manage one launcher.

A clean-boot environment can temporarily lose functionality. After troubleshooting, restore Normal startup, re-enable the services and startup items you disabled, and restart Windows. Keep track of changes during the test so you can restore them rather than leaving unrelated apps or services disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because clean boot changes more than one launcher’s startup behavior, it is not the first fix for a single app that appears at sign-in. Use it when you suspect another startup conflict and need to isolate a cause. Once you have diagnosed the issue, return Windows to its normal startup configuration rather than leaving the reduced set of services and apps in place.

How do the available methods compare?

For a normal listed launcher, use the Windows toggle or the launcher’s own checkbox. The more advanced options are useful only when the ordinary controls do not explain what is starting the app.

Method Scope Visibility Reversibility and trade-off
Launcher’s own startup preference Usually one launcher Visible in that launcher’s settings, when provided Easy to reverse by restoring the checkbox; names and behavior vary by version.
Windows Settings or Task Manager One selected startup app Visible when Windows lists the entry; Task Manager also shows startup impact Easy to reverse by enabling the entry again; the best first choice for most readers.
Startup-folder shortcut Shortcut for the current user or all users Visible in the relevant folder, though absent from the standard list in some cases Remove only a shortcut you recognize; another startup route may remain.
Registry Run key Entries configured in a particular registry location Not shown as an ordinary setting and requires identifying the value Higher risk: editing can have unintended consequences, so back up first.
Clean boot Multiple selected services and startup items for diagnosis Requires changing system configuration and Startup apps Temporary diagnostic state that may reduce functionality; restore Normal startup and disabled items afterward.

The practical order is to use a launcher checkbox or Windows toggle, then inspect Startup folders if the app is missing. Reserve registry changes and clean boot for cases that the simple controls do not resolve.

The methods differ along four useful axes. Scope: an in-app checkbox usually applies to one launcher, while clean boot temporarily affects selected services and startup apps. Reversibility: a toggle or checkbox is straightforward to restore; a registry change is less forgiving. Visibility: a listed app is easy to find, while a hidden shortcut or registry entry takes extra checking. Side effects: starting a launcher only when needed can delay updates, sync, notifications, controller support, or anti-cheat initialization depending on its configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most readers, a visible Settings or Task Manager entry is the best balance of scope and reversibility. Use the app’s preference when you find it, then confirm whether Windows has a separate entry. Explore Startup folders when the launcher is missing from the normal list. The registry and clean boot are escalation steps, not routine alternatives to the simple toggle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does disabling startup sign me out of my game account?

A startup toggle controls whether the launcher opens automatically; it is not an account sign-out control. Your saved sign-in state is handled separately by the launcher, so check its account or privacy settings if you want to change that.

Can I disable startup apps on Windows 7 with these steps?

These paths are for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The Settings route described here does not apply to Windows 7, so use instructions specific to that older Windows release rather than assuming the same menus exist.

Does a high startup-impact label mean a launcher is slowing down my games?

No. The label is based on CPU and disk activity during Windows startup, not a gaming benchmark. It cannot by itself tell you whether a game will gain frames or load faster after you disable the launcher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the launcher is missing from Settings and Task Manager?

Check the Startup folders: press Win + R, enter shell:startup for the current user or shell:common startup for all users, and look for a shortcut you recognize. Microsoft also lists Run keys in the registry, but editing them can have unintended consequences; back up first and do not remove entries you cannot identify.

Will disabling a launcher at startup uninstall it or stop me launching it manually?

No. Disabling its startup entry changes whether it opens automatically when you sign in. It does not uninstall the launcher, and you can still open it yourself.

Can turning off a launcher affect updates or cloud saves?

Depending on the launcher version and configuration, updates, cloud synchronization, notifications, controller support, or anti-cheat initialization may wait until the launcher or relevant service starts. The effects vary, so start the launcher manually if a feature you need is unavailable.

When should I use a clean boot?

Use clean boot as a diagnostic step if you suspect another startup conflict, not as the normal way to disable one launcher. After troubleshooting, restore Normal startup, re-enable the services and startup items you disabled, and restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with the launcher’s own startup checkbox or Windows Settings > Apps > Startup; use Task Manager > Startup apps if needed. If the launcher is still missing or starts anyway, check the Startup folders before considering advanced steps. Disabling startup does not uninstall the launcher, but version-dependent features may wait until you open it.
