If your steps or workouts appear twice after connecting a watch, phone and fitness apps, make one device or app the source of truth for each metric. Then allow the data to travel in one direction to your destination app, turn off competing write permissions, remove records that are already duplicated, and reconnect only the path you intend to use. On iPhone, Apple Health lets you reorder and disable sources. On Android, Google Health, Health Connect and Google Fit can merge streams, but recording the same exercise in two apps or creating an import/export loop still produces duplicates.
Why are my steps or workouts duplicated?
A duplicate is created when two sources record the same real-world event and both write it into a shared health hub or destination. For example, a watch may send a run to Apple Health, while the running app records that run independently and sends another copy to the same service. The two records can have slightly different start times or durations, so the receiving app may not recognize them as one activity.

A workout can travel from a wearable to a health hub, from the hub to a destination app, and then back from that destination app to the hub. Google Health specifically warns that exporting exercises to a service and importing them back through Health Connect or Apple Health can create duplicate activity records. It also advises against recording the same exercise in both the Google Health app and another tracking app at the same time.
The same problem affects steps. A phone, watch and third-party app may each publish step totals. If the destination adds rather than properly prioritizes those streams, the displayed number can be much higher than the steps you actually took. HeiaHeia describes the equivalent wearable-plus-health-app problem: connecting both paths can deliver the same information twice.

There is no single duplicate-removal switch that works across every platform. The reliable fix is to decide which source owns each data type, disable every competing writer, remove existing extras, and test a single new activity.
What does “source of truth” mean for fitness data?
Your source of truth is the one recorder you trust to create a particular metric. You might use a watch for steps and outdoor workouts, a phone for walking without the watch, or a specialist workout app for structured training. The choice can differ by data type: a watch could own steps while a cycling app owns bike rides.

- Steps: Usually choose the device you wear most consistently. If your watch records all day, make it authoritative and prevent a phone or app from writing a second step stream.
- Workouts: Choose the recorder that has the details you need, such as GPS, laps, heart-rate samples or training intervals. Do not start the same session in two apps.
- Manual entries: Treat them as intentional corrections, not another automatic source. A manually entered workout can coexist with an automatic record, so check for it when a duplicate appears.
- Destination app: Decide whether it should display imported data only or also create its own activities. It should not do both for the same exercise.
Use a simple data-flow map
Write down every device and app that can read or write the affected category. A safe arrangement is:
Wearable → Apple Health or Google Health/Health Connect → destination app
The risky arrangement is enabling that chain while also allowing:
Wearable → destination app and destination app → health hub for the same activity type.

How do I stop duplicate steps and workouts in Apple Health?
In Apple Health, put the preferred source first for the affected category and disable the competing writer. Apple says that when multiple sources contribute the same data type, the source at the top takes priority over the others. You can reorder sources and switch off an app or device without disconnecting every health integration.
- Open the Health app on your iPhone.
- Tap Browse, then select the affected category, such as Steps or Workouts.
- Scroll to Data Sources & Access and open it.
- Review every listed app and device. Look for your Apple Watch, iPhone, workout app and any Bluetooth source that can write the category.
- Tap Edit. Move the source you selected as authoritative to the top of the list.
- Turn off the checkmark for each competing source that records the same workout type or step stream.
- Tap Done, then repeat the review for any related category that is also duplicated, such as active energy or distance.
Understand Apple Health’s default priority
Apple documents a default order in which manually entered data is prioritized first, followed by iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch data, then apps and Bluetooth devices. You can change that order. If a manually entered record is unexpectedly winning, inspect the category’s source list and remove or correct the manual entry rather than adding another automatic source.
Do not record one workout twice
If your watch automatically detects a run and you also press Start in a workout app that writes to Health, both apps may publish a run. Pick one recorder for that session. You can leave the other app connected for reading or for different activity types, but disable its ability to write that workout category.
How do I stop duplicate workouts on Android with Google Health or Health Connect?
On Android, first decide whether the watch, phone or workout app is authoritative. Then limit which activity types each partner is allowed to write. Google Fit says it reviews information for a data type from different sources and merges it logically; for steps, watch data is prioritized over phone data to avoid duplicate counting. That merging does not make simultaneous recording or circular syncing safe.
- Open Google Health or the Health Connect settings used by your phone and open the section for connected apps or partner permissions.
- List the apps and devices that can write steps, exercise or workouts.
- Choose one recorder for each category. For example, select the watch for steps and a workout app for cycling.
- Allow only the activity types that should be copied to the destination. Disable workout or step writing from apps that are merely reading the data.
- In the destination app, check whether it imports from Health Connect, records directly, or both. Keep one route for each activity type.
- Complete one short test activity and verify that exactly one record appears before reconnecting anything else.
What Google Fit’s merging does and does not do
Google Fit’s source review can combine streams and prioritize watch steps over phone steps, which is useful when both devices are present. It is not a guarantee that two independently logged workouts will collapse into one. A run recorded in both Google Fit and a separate workout app can still produce two exercise records, especially when they contain different metadata.
How Strava’s current Google Health connection should be configured
Strava’s current Google Health guidance allows users to choose which activity types sync to Strava. Activities logged in Strava no longer sync back to Google Health through that integration. In practice, enable only the activity categories you want copied into Strava, and do not also record the same session in Google Health or another app. If another connector still exports Strava activities into Health Connect, remove that second direction to prevent a loop.
How do I delete workouts and steps that are already doubled?
Clean the history only after deciding which source you will keep. Otherwise, the next synchronization can recreate the same records and make it difficult to tell whether the fix worked.

- Open the activity or health-data history in the destination app.
- Compare each suspected pair by date, start time, duration, distance and source. Two records with matching timing and substantially matching details are likely the same event.
- Keep the record from your authoritative source. If one copy contains the GPS or heart-rate details you need, retain that one.
- Delete the extra record wherever the app supports deletion.
- Before reconnecting, remove the extra read or write permission that created it.
- Run a new test activity and confirm that only one record arrives. If a second copy appears, note which source created it and disable that writer.
Deleting individual records in Apple Health
In Apple Health, open the affected category, select Show All Data, choose the date and record, and delete the unwanted entry. The exact confirmation wording can vary by iOS release, but the record-level history is the place to remove an individual duplicate. Afterward, review the category’s Data Sources & Access screen so the same app cannot immediately write it again.
When a destination says an import is missing
Sometimes an app reports that an Apple Health activity was imported but does not display it. Strava’s support guidance says the activity may already exist as a duplicate. Check the activity history for a record with the same date and time, delete that duplicate, and try the import again. Do not repeatedly import while both copies remain; each attempt can make the history harder to audit.
Should syncing be one-way or two-way?
For a metric that is duplicated, one-way syncing is the safer default. Sworkit’s support guidance states that avoiding duplicate workout entries requires syncing in one direction only to Apple Health or Health Connect. Two-way synchronization can be appropriate when an integration explicitly documents reliable deduplication, but it creates more opportunities for a loop and makes troubleshooting harder.
| Arrangement | How it works | Duplicate risk | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wearable → health hub → destination | The hub is the single exchange point and the destination imports from it. | Lowest when direct wearable-to-destination writing is disabled. | Best default for steps and workouts shared across several apps. |
| Workout app → destination | The specialist app creates the workout and sends it directly. | Low if the hub does not also import or export the same activity. | Useful when the workout app has the most complete GPS or training data. |
| Health hub ↔ destination | Both services read and write activity records. | High if either side republishes imported activities. | Use only when the integration documents one-time transfer or deduplication. |
| Wearable → destination plus hub → destination | The destination receives two paths for the same event. | High. | Avoid for any category recorded by the wearable. |
Why are only some workouts duplicated?
Selective duplication usually means permissions differ by activity type or one app records only certain sessions. A running app may write runs while a cycling app writes rides, so only runs appear twice. Automatic workout detection can also create a record for activities you manually started in another app.
Check activity-type permissions
Review permissions individually for running, walking, cycling, strength training and other categories. Do not assume that disconnecting an app’s “workouts” permission also disables steps, distance or active energy. Disable only the overlapping type so you can keep useful, non-overlapping data.
Check timing and start method
If duplicates occur only when you manually start a workout, turn off automatic workout detection on one recorder or stop starting the second app. If they occur after a watch syncs at the end of an activity, the watch is likely sending a completed record while the phone app is also saving its local copy.
What should I do when the step total is still wrong?
First inspect the source list rather than deleting random days. A high total can be caused by two writers, while a low total can occur when the preferred device was not worn or its sync failed.

- Confirm the watch or phone is listed as a source for the exact Steps category.
- Check the source order in Apple Health, or the source-merging and partner permissions in Google Health or Health Connect.
- Disable third-party step writing if the watch already supplies all-day steps.
- Look for manual step entries, which may be prioritized differently from automatic data.
- Allow the device to finish syncing before comparing totals; a partial day can look like a duplicate or omission.
- Compare one hour or one day across the source and destination instead of relying only on the weekly total.
On Android, Google Fit’s documented behavior prioritizes watch data over phone data for steps. On iPhone, Apple Health’s source order determines which source has priority, so moving the preferred device to the top is the relevant control.

How can I verify that the fix worked?
Use a controlled test rather than waiting for a full day of activity.
- After changing permissions, close or pause the destination app and note the current count.
- Perform one short, clearly identifiable activity, such as a brief walk or a manually started workout.
- Wait for the chosen source and health hub to finish synchronizing.
- Check the destination history for one record with the expected start time and duration.
- Inspect the record’s source details if available. It should identify the path you kept, not a disabled writer.
- Repeat once with a different activity type only if that type has separate permissions.
If two records still appear, do not keep deleting them without changing settings. Compare their source labels, remove the remaining duplicate writer, delete the extras again, and repeat the single-activity test.
What are the most common setup mistakes?
Connecting both the wearable and the health app to the destination
HeiaHeia recommends connecting either the wearable or Apple/Google Health to the destination service, not both, because both paths can carry the same workout and step data. Keep the path that preserves the details you care about and disconnect the other writer.
Assuming a read permission is harmless
Reading data is generally safe, but an app that can also write imported records can create a loop. Inspect read and write controls separately and remove write access where the app should only display data.
Deleting history before fixing permissions
Deletion alone is temporary when synchronization remains unchanged. Always disable the competing source first, then remove the existing duplicates.
Changing several sources at once
If you disable every connection simultaneously, you may not know which setting solved the problem or which data stopped arriving. Change the overlapping writer first, test, and then adjust another category if needed.

Which setup should I choose?
Choose the arrangement that matches how you actually exercise, not the one with the most connections.
| Your situation | Recommended authoritative source | Configuration |
|---|---|---|
| You wear one watch all day and want consistent steps. | The watch. | Watch writes steps to Apple Health or Google Health/Health Connect; other apps read steps but do not write them. |
| You use a specialist app for GPS runs. | The running app for runs. | Let the app write runs to the health hub or destination, but do not also start the watch’s workout recorder for those runs. |
| You alternate between phone and watch. | The device used for each activity, with one active recorder at a time. | Prevent both devices from publishing the same session; allow the platform’s documented merging only for genuinely separate data. |
| You need one app to display everything. | The health hub as the exchange point. | Use wearable → hub → destination and disable direct wearable-to-destination writing. |
How do I prevent duplicates after future app changes?
- Before installing or reconnecting an app, check whether it can read and write Apple Health or Health Connect.
- Write down the current owner for steps and each workout type.
- After connecting a new service, grant only the activity permissions it needs.
- Keep synchronization one-way unless the integration explicitly explains how it prevents re-importing its own records.
- Do not run automatic workout detection and manual recording for the same session.
- After every major change, perform one controlled test and inspect the source label.
- Review source lists periodically, especially after replacing a watch or restoring a phone.
The goal is not to disconnect every fitness service. It is to give each metric one writer, make the health hub a clear handoff point, and let other apps read the finished record without publishing a second copy.

Will turning off a source delete the workouts it already recorded?
Usually, disabling a read or write permission changes future synchronization rather than automatically removing historical records. Review the app’s own data-retention wording before disconnecting, and export any records you need if the service warns that disconnecting removes access.
Can I keep both my phone and watch for step tracking?
Yes, if they are measuring different periods or the platform is intentionally merging them. For the same time period, designate one as the priority source and prevent the other from writing duplicate steps; otherwise the total may depend on how each platform handles overlap.
Why do duplicates return a day after I delete them?
A connected app may still have unsent records queued for synchronization. Remove its write permission, let pending sync finish or clear its queue according to that app’s controls, then delete the extra history and run a fresh one-activity test.
Do duplicate workouts affect calorie totals and distance too?
They can. A duplicated workout may carry its own distance, active-energy and heart-rate data, so those categories can be overstated even when the step count looks correct. Audit related categories after fixing the workout source, especially if the destination calculates totals from imported activities.
