To stop Siri from reading incoming messages over CarPlay, turn off Announce Messages: on your iPhone, open Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications > CarPlay, then switch off Announce Messages. You can also change the same control in the CarPlay display. If alerts from other apps still break into a drive, configure Driving Focus and enable Activate With CarPlay. The first setting is a targeted fix for spoken message content; Driving Focus is the broader option for silencing or limiting notifications while you drive.
Which setting stops Siri from reading messages in CarPlay?
Announce Messages is the direct control. CarPlay normally lets Siri play a tone, identify the sender and read an incoming message aloud. Turning this switch off stops that spoken message announcement without changing the broader notification behavior of every app.

Apple documents the control in its CarPlay user guide. The exact wording or location can vary slightly with your iOS release and language, but look for the terms Announce Notifications and CarPlay.
This distinction matters because a message can still arrive on the iPhone even when Siri no longer speaks it through the car. Announce Messages changes the audio announcement behavior; it is not a universal “do not disturb” switch for every banner, vibration, badge or notification sound.
How do I turn off CarPlay message announcements on my iPhone?
The iPhone route is the most consistent way to change the setting, even when the vehicle uses a different touchscreen, rotary controller or touchpad.

- Tap Notifications.
- Choose Announce Notifications.
- Tap CarPlay.
- Turn off Announce Messages.
Disconnect and reconnect CarPlay if the old behavior continues for the current drive. The setting applies to CarPlay’s message announcements; it is not a master switch for notification banners, sounds or alerts from every app on the iPhone.
Make this change while parked. Searching through Settings or testing a message while moving creates a distraction, and the same option can be checked later from the in-car display if you need to confirm the state.
Can I reduce announcements instead of disabling them?
Yes. The Announce Notifications controls let you decide when announcements begin and which messages are included. In the Messages options, Apple provides choices such as Time Sensitive and Direct Messages or All Notifications. Selecting the narrower category can keep urgent or direct messages available while excluding routine group activity.
These choices are useful when the problem is frequency rather than the speech itself. Review the available options under the same Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications > CarPlay screen, because labels can differ between iOS releases.
Choosing the narrower category does not turn on Driving Focus. It only changes which Messages notifications Siri may announce through CarPlay. If alerts from other apps are the real source of interruptions, use Focus as a separate step.

You can change the control without taking the iPhone out of its mount.
- Open the Settings app on the CarPlay display.
- Select Announce Messages.
- Turn the setting off.
The CarPlay screen also includes Announce Options, which controls whether messages are spoken at the start of a drive. When Siri is reading an incoming message, Apple also provides an interaction for enabling or disabling announcements from that CarPlay conversation.
The physical method for opening Settings depends on the vehicle. Some cars use a touchscreen, others use a rotary knob, steering-wheel controls or a touchpad. Apple recommends checking the vehicle manual for the relevant control rather than assuming one button sequence works in every car. Siri can also control parts of the CarPlay experience. If you cannot find the CarPlay Settings app, use the iPhone path instead. It avoids guessing which knob, back button or touchpad gesture your vehicle assigns to selecting an item. Do not attempt to operate an unfamiliar control while the car is moving.
Why are other notifications still interrupting music or navigation?
Turning off Announce Messages only addresses Siri speaking messages. If alerts from other people or apps continue to appear or make sounds, use Driving Focus. Apple describes Driving Focus as a way to silence or limit text messages and other notifications while you concentrate on the road.
Driving Focus is configured on the iPhone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Focus.
- Choose Driving. If it is not listed, add Driving from the Focus screen.
- Review the people and notification settings you want to allow or silence.
Apple’s setup and customization instructions are in Use Driving Focus on your iPhone to concentrate on the road. Driving Focus is broader than Announce Messages, so it can change how notifications from multiple sources are handled during a drive.

Use Driving Focus when your goal is a quieter notification environment, not merely a silent reading of text messages. It can limit messages and other notifications while your music and navigation remain available through CarPlay. Because it affects more than one notification type, review its settings rather than assuming it will preserve every alert by default.
How do I make Driving Focus turn on automatically with CarPlay?
Driving Focus can start when your iPhone connects to CarPlay, so you do not have to remember to enable it each time.

- Open Settings > Focus > Driving on the iPhone.
- Under the activation choices, select Activate With CarPlay.
- Leave that option enabled when you want Driving Focus to begin with a CarPlay connection.
Depending on the iOS release, Driving Focus may also offer automatic detection, activation when the phone connects to the car’s Bluetooth system, or manual activation. These are separate triggers; choose the one that matches how you use the vehicle. You do not need to select every trigger.
Apple’s current CarPlay settings documentation also describes enabling Driving Focus from CarPlay Settings while the iPhone is connected. When Driving Focus is active with CarPlay, Apple says notifications and text messages are silenced or limited. The wording and menu placement can vary by iOS version and locale, so use the literal terms Driving Focus and Activate With CarPlay when looking through the menus. Automatic activation is convenient for a driver who uses CarPlay regularly, but it is not mandatory. If you share a vehicle, sometimes ride as a passenger, or want different behavior on short trips, manual activation may be more predictable.
How do I turn Driving Focus on just for one trip?
Open Control Center on the iPhone and tap the Focus control, then choose Driving. This manual method is useful when you do not want an automatic trigger for every CarPlay connection, or when you are testing whether broader notification limits solve the interruptions.
Manual activation also lets you compare the two controls safely while parked: first try Announce Messages alone, then enable Driving Focus if unrelated alerts remain disruptive. Turn the Focus off after the trip if you selected manual activation and do not want it to continue affecting notifications.
What if I am a passenger?
Automatic activation can mistake a passenger for the driver. If Driving Focus turns on while you are riding in the car, Apple says to tap the Driving Focus notification and choose I’m not driving. That restores the normal Focus behavior for the passenger without requiring you to change the permanent activation preference.
This passenger option is preferable to deleting the Driving Focus setup. You can leave Activate With CarPlay ready for your next drive and dismiss the temporary activation when someone else is driving.
How can I customize which people and notifications get through?
Driving Focus is not an all-or-nothing block. In its Focus settings, Apple lets you allow notifications from selected people or silence selected people. Use the people controls to decide whose messages or calls should remain available during a drive, rather than disabling every contact.

You can also configure Auto-Reply. Choose the group that should receive an automatic response while Driving Focus is on. This is separate from Siri’s spoken announcements: Auto-Reply tells contacts that notifications are limited, while Announce Messages determines whether incoming Messages content is read aloud in CarPlay.
Because Focus settings can affect more than Messages, check the allowed people and notification choices before relying on them for work, emergency or family communications. The available controls and their names are described in Apple’s Driving Focus support article.
Do not confuse an allowed contact with an announcement permission. Allowing someone through Driving Focus controls whether that person’s notification may pass the Focus filter; Announce Messages controls whether a qualifying message is spoken by Siri. They are related settings, but neither one replaces the other.
Should I use Announce Messages or Driving Focus?
Choose based on whether you want a targeted speech change or a broader driving filter.

You can use both settings together. For example, Announce Messages can remain off while Driving Focus limits other alerts, or you can keep selected message announcements and use Focus to suppress unrelated apps.
There is no need to buy an accessory, replace a cable or install a separate utility to use these controls. The supported solution is built into the iPhone and CarPlay settings. Vehicle hardware only affects how you operate the display, not the existence of the iPhone settings.
What should I check if the setting does not appear?
The menu name is different
Apple changes labels and menu placement between iOS releases and languages. Search Settings for Announce Notifications, CarPlay or Driving Focus. On the CarPlay display, look in the Settings app for Announce Messages.
Read the full label rather than choosing a similarly named notification option. The CarPlay-specific control is nested under Announce Notifications on the iPhone, while the in-car control is presented as Announce Messages.

Driving is missing from Focus
Open Settings > Focus and add Driving if it is not already listed. After adding it, return to the Driving settings to configure allowed people, silenced people, Auto-Reply and activation choices.
If you only want to stop Siri speaking messages, you can leave Driving Focus unconfigured and use Announce Messages alone. Adding Driving is necessary only when you want the broader Focus behavior.

The old announcement continues during the current connection
Confirm that Announce Messages is off under the CarPlay-specific controls, then disconnect and reconnect the iPhone to CarPlay. If you changed the setting on the iPhone while the car was connected, reopening CarPlay Settings can help verify that both screens show the intended state.
Test again while parked. A message that was already being read may finish its current interaction, so check a new, non-critical message after the setting is confirmed rather than judging the switch from an announcement that started earlier.
The car’s controls do not match the instructions
Do not assume that a touchscreen gesture applies to your vehicle. CarPlay displays may use a touchscreen, rotary controller or touchpad, and the car’s manual explains how to select the Settings app and confirm a toggle. The iPhone path is preferable when the in-car controls are difficult to operate safely.
Driving Focus activates at the wrong time
Review the activation choices under Settings > Focus > Driving. If automatic detection, Bluetooth connection and Activate With CarPlay are all available, select only the triggers that fit your routine. A passenger can use I’m not driving from the Focus notification when an automatic trigger activates unexpectedly.

Announce Messages is narrowly aimed at spoken message announcements. It does not disable CarPlay itself, so your navigation and audio apps remain available. Driving Focus is the setting that changes the wider notification environment; it can silence or limit alerts while navigation and media continue to be used through CarPlay.
Turning off message announcements does not remove your Messages app, erase conversations or prevent you from checking messages later when parked. It simply prevents Siri from reading qualifying incoming messages through the car. Likewise, Driving Focus changes notification handling; it is not a replacement for your navigation or music controls.

What is the safest setup for a quiet drive?
For the fewest spoken interruptions, turn off Announce Messages and enable Activate With CarPlay for Driving Focus. Then review Driving Focus’s people and notification allowances so that the filter matches your needs. If you still want selected direct or time-sensitive messages announced, leave Announce Messages enabled and narrow the Messages announcement category instead.

- Connect CarPlay and verify that the intended Driving Focus status appears.
- Check the people and notification choices in Driving Focus.
- Confirm whether Announce Messages is off or limited to the category you want.
- Start navigation or music only after the configuration is complete.
Test the configuration while parked: connect CarPlay, trigger a non-critical test message if appropriate, and verify whether Siri speaks it and whether Driving Focus shows as active. This separates a setting problem from a vehicle-control problem before you begin driving.
