Yes—an urgent payment request can be fabricated with AI even when the email is polished, the invoice looks authentic, or the caller sounds exactly like someone you know. Generative tools now produce convincing text, logos, documents, cloned voices and synthetic video. Those details establish only that content was generated; they do not prove who sent it or where the money should go.

The safe response is procedural: pause, end the incoming conversation, verify the beneficiary through a contact method you already trust, and require a second approval for high-risk changes. If you already transferred funds or disclosed credentials, contact the bank or payment provider immediately, request a recall, secure the accounts and preserve evidence.

Why can an AI payment request look so convincing?

Generative AI lets criminals produce social-engineering material at a scale and quality that was previously difficult to achieve. The FBI says criminals use it to create believable text, images, audio and video for fraud. It can remove spelling mistakes, translate a message, generate a realistic profile photo or document, and imitate the writing style of an executive, supplier or relative.

Attackers often combine scraped personal information with familiar branding and a believable caller persona. A message may mention a real project, a recent trip or a genuine invoice number. A cloned voice may use the same greeting and vocabulary as a family member. These details can make a request feel private and urgent while the payment destination is controlled by the attacker.

“Criminals use generative artificial intelligence (AI) to commit fraud on a larger scale which increases the believability of their schemes.” — FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, Criminals Use Generative Artificial Intelligence to Facilitate Financial Fraud, 3 December 2024.

In the FBI IC3 2025 Annual Report, 22,364 complaints were identified as AI-related, with adjusted losses of $893,346,472. The total covers AI-related complaints broadly, not only counterfeit payment requests, so it is not a prevalence rate for this one scam type. The report describes official-sounding business emails directing wire payments and voice cloning used to request transfers.

Which payment scams use cloned voices, video or generated documents?

AI is an amplifier for several existing fraud patterns. The payment mechanism changes, but the warning signs and the verification rule are consistent: never treat the incoming message as proof of identity.

Business email compromise and invoice diversion

An attacker impersonates an executive, vendor or accounts-payable contact and asks for an urgent wire, a new payee or a bank-detail change. AI can produce a natural-sounding email thread, a convincing invoice and a reply in the organization’s usual style. If the request changes account details, verify the beneficiary and account number with a known vendor contact before editing a record or releasing a payment.

Executive or supplier voice cloning

A phone call or voice note can sound like a manager approving an urgent transfer. The FBI has also warned about malicious messaging campaigns in which senior U.S. officials were impersonated. A familiar voice is still only an assertion; hang up and call the person on a number in your address book or company directory.

Family distress requests

Criminals can combine public photos and social posts with a cloned voice or generated video to claim that a relative needs money immediately. A request to keep the transfer secret, buy gift cards or use an unfamiliar payment app deserves the same independent callback as a business request. Families can agree on a secret word or phrase that is never posted publicly.

Bank and payment-support impersonation

A message may claim that fraud was detected and ask you to “move” funds, read out a one-time code or sign in through a supplied link. The FBI’s 25 November 2025 warning on account-takeover fraud via impersonated financial-institution support describes this pattern. Real support will not require you to surrender an MFA code to prove ownership; use the phone number on your card or statement instead.

How do I verify an urgent payment request safely?

Use a fixed process even when the request appears to come from a known person. Speed and secrecy are attacker-controlled conditions; verification must happen outside the original conversation.

  1. Pause the transaction. Stop replying when a request creates urgency, secrecy, a new destination, a changed bank account, or asks for an MFA code. Do not approve a payment simply because a manager says a deadline is imminent.
  2. End the incoming channel. Hang up, close the chat or stop replying to the email. Do not use the phone number, link, QR code, attachment or “reply” path supplied in that request.
  3. Choose a known contact method. Call a number from your address book, an existing contract, a bank card, a prior statement or the organization’s official website. For a coworker, use a directory entry you opened independently rather than a number in the message.
  4. Confirm the full payment details. Read back the amount, beneficiary name, account number, routing details and deadline. Ask the vendor or family member to confirm the change through that second channel, not merely to confirm that they sent an email.
  5. Obtain a second approval. Require another authorized person for a first-time payee, changed bank details, payroll change, urgent wire or gift-card purchase. The second approver should review the original records and independently contact the requester.
  6. Inspect links and files only after verification. Once the sender and destination are confirmed, navigate to the financial service through a bookmark or a manually entered address. Never enter credentials or codes into a login page reached from the unverified message.

For a family request, ask for the prearranged secret word or phrase. If the person cannot provide it, keep the conversation paused until you reach them using a known number. A video call does not replace this check: synthetic video can appear to show the right person.

What controls reduce the chance that one fake request gets paid?

Technical controls work best when they support a human approval rule. Configure them before an incident, document who can change a payee and make exceptions visible.

Separate payment preparation from approval

Use dual authorization for new beneficiaries, bank-detail edits, payroll changes, urgent wires and gift-card purchases. One employee can enter the payment while another verifies the request through a known channel and approves it in the banking or payment platform. Keep an audit trail of who changed the record, who approved it and which contact method was used.

Protect the accounts that can authorize money

Enable multifactor authentication on email, banking, payroll, cloud-administrator and payment-platform accounts. Never share an MFA code with a caller or type it into a page reached from an unexpected message. A FIDO2/WebAuthn security key is a physical, phishing-resistant option for services that support it; confirm compatibility with the service before purchasing or enrolling one.

MFA cannot rescue an account when credentials are entered into a fraudulent login page and the attacker captures the session or prompts for the second factor. Independent navigation, unique passwords and prompt review of sign-in alerts remain necessary. Use a password manager where appropriate, keep passwords unique and bookmark financial login pages rather than following emailed links.

Make verification easy to follow

Publish a short payment-verification procedure with the approved callback numbers and escalation contacts. Staff should know that a changed bank account is a verification event, not a routine administrative update. Households can apply the same idea by keeping bank and card numbers in a secure contact list and agreeing that emergency transfers require the family phrase.

What should I do if I already sent money or disclosed credentials?

Time matters because a payment provider may have a limited opportunity to stop or recall a transfer. Treat a credential disclosure as an account incident even when no money has left yet.

  1. Contact the institution immediately. Call the bank, card issuer, wire service or payment provider using a trusted number. Explain that the transaction resulted from impersonation, provide the amount and destination, and request a recall, reversal or account freeze where available.
  2. Secure exposed accounts. Change the disclosed password and every account that reused it. Reset email, banking, payroll and administrator credentials from a clean device, revoke active sessions and review recovery email addresses, phone numbers and newly enrolled MFA methods.
  3. Notify the impersonated organization. Tell the real vendor, employer, bank or family member so it can warn other recipients, lock the affected account or investigate a mailbox takeover. If a company account was involved, preserve the relevant mailbox and payment-system logs before deleting anything.
  4. Preserve evidence. Keep the original email, complete message headers, text thread, audio or video file, caller number, URLs, invoice, attachment, wallet or account details and transaction records. Record the date, time, amount, instructions and every person contacted. Do not edit screenshots or forward a malicious attachment as a live file.
  5. Report the fraud. File a detailed complaint with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Include payment dates and amounts, receiving accounts, contact details, the impersonated identity, the method used to request money and copies of available evidence. Also follow the bank’s fraud-reporting process and any local reporting requirement.

If you clicked a malicious link or opened an unexpected attachment, disconnect the affected device from sensitive accounts while you secure credentials. Have your organization’s security team or a qualified technician check for unauthorized remote-access software, browser extensions and forwarding rules before you resume payment work.

Which warning signs deserve a hard stop?

No single clue proves that a request is fraudulent. The combinations below indicate when to stop the transaction and switch to independent verification.

Signal in the request Why it is not proof of identity Required response
Perfect grammar, logo or formatting AI can generate polished language and realistic documents. Confirm the beneficiary through a known channel.
Familiar voice or video Voice cloning and synthetic video can imitate a relative or executive. Hang up and call a trusted number; use the family phrase when applicable.
Urgency, secrecy or a deadline Pressure prevents normal review and second approval. Pause and escalate to an independent approver.
Changed bank details or a new payee A compromised thread can contain genuine invoice information but a fraudulent destination. Reconfirm account details with the vendor using existing records.
Request for an MFA code or “safe” transfer Support impersonators use codes and transfers to take over accounts. Refuse, end the call and contact the institution from the card or statement.
Link, QR code or attachment supplied in the message It may lead to credential theft or malware even when the text is genuine-looking. Navigate independently and open files only after verification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How should organizations test and improve this process?

Start with the transactions that cause the greatest loss if diverted: payroll, large wires, first-time suppliers and account-detail changes. Map who enters, reviews and releases each payment, then remove single-person approval for those categories. Store callback numbers outside email and require the reviewer to document the independent confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review MFA enrollment and recovery settings for privileged accounts, not just ordinary staff. Alerts for new payees, password resets, forwarding-rule changes and unusual sign-ins give investigators a timeline. Periodically rehearse a scenario in which an executive’s voice is cloned or a vendor’s bank account changes; the exercise should measure whether staff follow the callback and dual-approval rules under time pressure.

For households, the equivalent is a short written rule: no emergency transfer is made from an incoming call or message, and every request is confirmed using a stored number. Keep financial alerts enabled so an unrecognized transfer is visible quickly.

AI makes impersonation cheaper and more persuasive, but it does not change the fundamental control. A request is safe to pay only after the destination and authority have been verified outside the channel that delivered it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can caller ID prove that a payment request came from my bank or boss?

No. Caller ID and displayed sender details can be manipulated, and a cloned voice can make a spoofed call sound authentic. End the call and dial a number you obtained independently from a card, statement, directory or existing contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I send a small test payment before approving the full amount?

No; a test transfer still confirms that your account is willing to pay an attacker and may be unrecoverable. Verify the beneficiary and account details first, then use your organization’s normal approval and payment limits.

What information should an IC3 complaint contain?

Include the dates and amounts, receiving account or wallet details, phone numbers and email addresses, the impersonated person or organization, and how the request reached you. Preserve the original messages, headers, attachments, URLs and transaction records so investigators can correlate the report.

Does a FIDO2 security key stop every AI payment scam?

No. It can resist phishing-based credential capture on supported services, but it cannot decide whether a legitimate authenticated user is paying the wrong beneficiary. Keep independent callback and dual-approval procedures even after deploying a security key.
