You can sharply reduce how consumer AI apps personalize responses or use your chats to improve models, but there is no universal “stop” switch. Open each service’s privacy controls, disable training and memory separately where offered, delete saved activity, disconnect unnecessary apps, and stop submitting sensitive information. Opt-outs normally apply to future use; they do not automatically erase older chats, feedback, safety reviews, legal-retention copies, or information already incorporated into a model. The practical approach is to work through each provider’s controls, then adopt a data-minimization routine for every prompt.
What should I do first to stop AI personalization?
Start with an account-by-account audit. Personalization (memory about you), model-training use, advertising, connected-app access and chat deletion are often different controls. Turning off one does not reliably turn off the others.

- Open the service’s privacy or data-controls page. Look for switches named training, model improvement, memory, personalization, activity history, connected apps and advertising.
- Disable both training and personalization. If a provider offers only one of them, read its description carefully; a memory switch may not change model-improvement use.
- Delete existing activity. Remove conversations and account activity after changing settings. Disconnecting an integration alone may leave copied prompts, summaries or inferences in the provider’s history.
- Revoke unnecessary integrations. Review Gmail, Drive, Photos, calendars, social accounts and browser or device connections. Remove access you no longer need.
- Change how you prompt. Replace names and account numbers with placeholders, redact health and financial details, and avoid uploading identity documents or confidential work files to public chatbots.
- Use a temporary or private mode for one-off work. This can limit history, but read the provider’s retention statement because temporary does not always mean immediate deletion.
Keep a dated note or screenshot of each setting. Providers change labels and account-specific controls, so an audit trail helps you verify that an option remains disabled.
How do I stop ChatGPT from using my chats?
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says new conversations made after that change will not be used to improve its models. This is a training-use opt-out, not a deletion command or a promise that every past conversation has disappeared.

Turn off model improvement
- Open your profile menu and select Settings.
- Choose Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone and confirm if prompted.
Use Temporary Chat for sensitive, one-off work when it is available on your account. Temporary chats are intended for conversations that should not remain in your normal history, but you should still avoid entering secrets because retention and safety-review rules can apply.
Handle feedback and old chats
If you submit a thumbs-up or thumbs-down rating, the associated conversation may still be used for training even after the general improvement switch is off. Treat feedback as a separate disclosure decision. Delete older conversations from the chat-history controls; changing the training setting does not remove them automatically.

For Gemini, turn off Keep Activity, then review Connected Apps and Personal Intelligence. Google says connected-app summaries, excerpts, generated media and inferences can be used to improve services and train models while Keep Activity is on.
Disable Keep Activity
- Open Gemini’s account or activity controls.
- Set Keep Activity to off and follow the confirmation steps.
- Review the activity list and delete previously stored Gemini Apps Activity rather than assuming the switch removed it.
With Keep Activity off, Google says temporary chats are retained for 72 hours and are not used to train models. That is a limited retention window, not instant deletion. Submitting feedback can create an exception, so avoid rating a conversation that contains information you do not want reviewed.
Disconnect connected services
Open the Connected Apps and Personal Intelligence controls and remove Gmail, Drive, Photos or other services that Gemini does not need. Disconnecting an app stops future access but does not erase Gemini Apps Activity already stored; delete that activity separately.

Can Microsoft Copilot remember me or train on my conversations?
Copilot separates memory and personalization from model-training controls. In the profile menu, review Memory > Personalization and memory, Microsoft usage data, and Privacy > Training on conversation activity. Personalized advertising has its own setting.
Clear memory and personalization
- Open the Copilot profile menu.
- Choose Memory, then Personalization and memory.
- Turn personalization and memory off and remove any saved memories offered by the page.
Microsoft says that turning off personalization makes Copilot forget its memories of your conversations and stops future personalization. This does not, by itself, answer whether conversation activity can be used for training.
Opt out of training separately
- Return to the profile menu and open Privacy.
- Find Training on conversation activity and disable it.
- Review Microsoft usage data and turn off collection you do not want to provide.
For work or school Copilot Chat, Microsoft describes enterprise data protection and says prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models. Administrators can still access organizational logs, so do not treat a managed account as a private diary. Check your organization’s retention and e-discovery policies.
Does Claude train on my conversations?
Consumer Claude accounts have a setting that allows chats and coding sessions to be used to improve Claude. Review that setting in your account and leave it disabled if you do not want to contribute conversations to model improvement.
Disable consumer improvement use
- Open Claude’s account settings.
- Find the option that allows chats and coding sessions to improve Claude.
- Turn it off, then check that the status remains disabled after refreshing or signing in again.
Anthropic identifies exceptions: safety-flagged conversations, explicit feedback and other explicit opt-ins can still be reviewed or used under their respective processes. Do not provide sensitive material merely because the general improvement switch is off.

Delete conversations
Delete chats from the Claude dashboard. Anthropic says backend deletion normally occurs within 30 days, subject to legal and safety exceptions. The dashboard action and the improvement opt-out solve different problems: one removes a stored conversation, while the other governs certain future uses.
Business accounts
Anthropic says commercial Claude inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. That default does not eliminate your employer’s own logging, retention, access or compliance obligations; confirm the terms for the specific commercial product and workspace.
How do I opt out of Grok training and personalization?
On X, go to Privacy & Safety > Data sharing and personalization > Grok & Third-party Collaborators. Turn off both the training/fine-tuning option and Grok Personalization, then delete conversation history from the same area.
- Open your X profile menu and select Settings and privacy.
- Open Privacy & Safety, then Data sharing and personalization.
- Select Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Disable the training/fine-tuning control and Grok Personalization.
- Use the deletion control for existing Grok conversations.
X says that making your account private prevents posts from being used to train underlying Grok models or surfaced in responses. That protects posts going forward; it does not necessarily remove information already processed. X says deleted conversations are removed within 30 days, unless security or legal-retention requirements apply. X also distinguishes model-training opt-out from learning that can occur through normal operation of a deployed product, so read each control’s explanation rather than treating the two as identical.

What can opting out not do?
An opt-out is a forward-looking control, not a universal eraser. A provider may retain information for safety investigations, legal obligations, fraud prevention, security, debugging or account records. Information that was already reviewed, included in an earlier training process or copied into a generated summary may not be reversible when you flip a switch.
- Feedback can override the general rule. Ratings and written reports may attach a conversation to a human-review or improvement workflow.
- Safety review can apply. Providers may retain or inspect flagged material even when ordinary training is disabled.
- Connected data can persist. Revoking Gmail, Drive, Photos or another app blocks new access but may not delete imported excerpts or activity history.
- Public data has a wider audience. Posts visible to the public can be collected, quoted or used for product features under the platform’s terms; privacy settings reduce exposure but do not rewrite copies elsewhere.
- Business controls are contextual. A no-training promise for a commercial product does not prevent your administrator, security team or regulated archive from retaining prompts.
After changing a setting, use the provider’s deletion tool and, where available, submit a formal privacy request for data categories you cannot remove from the dashboard. Keep expectations specific: ask whether the request covers chat history, activity logs, feedback, connected-app extracts and model-training records.
How can I minimize personal data in AI prompts?
Settings work best when less sensitive data enters the system in the first place. The Australian privacy regulator (OAIC) recommends that organizations not enter personal information—especially sensitive information—into publicly available generative-AI tools because of significant and complex privacy risks. Canada’s privacy commissioner recommends anonymized or de-identified information where possible and reasonable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRedact before you paste
- Replace names with roles such as
Customer AorEmployee 12. - Remove account numbers, email addresses, exact dates of birth, home addresses, payment details and authentication codes.
- Summarize medical, legal or financial facts instead of uploading a full record.
- Crop screenshots so browser tabs, notifications, QR codes and document metadata are not visible.
- Use synthetic examples to test prompts and restore real values only inside your own approved system.
Control files and integrations
Upload only the pages needed for the task. Turn off automatic access to mail, cloud drives, photo libraries, calendars and contacts, and check permissions after an app update. For confidential work, use an organization-approved AI workspace with a written retention and access policy rather than a personal consumer account.
Protect the account itself
Enable multifactor authentication, use a unique password and review active sessions. A stolen account can expose old chats even if future model training is disabled. Delete unused conversations and revoke third-party applications from the provider’s security page.
Best Value
What is the safest routine for using public AI tools?
- Classify the material. If it contains health, financial, identity, legal, employment or trade-secret information, move to an approved private environment or redact it.
- Check the account mode. Confirm training, memory, activity history and connected-app settings before the session.
- Use the minimum input. Provide the smallest excerpt and fewest identifiers needed to answer the question.
- Avoid feedback on sensitive chats. Ratings can create a separate review or training path.
- Delete after completion. Remove the conversation and any uploaded files, then clear provider activity where the service keeps a separate log.
- Audit monthly. Recheck settings, active sessions, integrations and saved memories because interfaces and defaults change.
This routine cannot guarantee that no provider ever processes your data; it reduces the amount available for personalization and limits the number of places it can persist.
What should I check when a setting appears not to work?
- The switch keeps reverting: verify you are changing the correct account, workspace or browser profile; managed organizations can enforce settings.
- Old suggestions still appear: clear saved memories and activity, not just model-training consent. A cached response may reflect prior context.
- A disconnected app still influences replies: delete imported activity and summaries; revocation stops access but does not erase copies.
- A deleted chat remains visible: sign out and back in, check archive or trash views, and allow the provider’s stated deletion period. Legal or safety holds can extend it.
- You cannot find the control: search the provider’s privacy center for “training,” “improve,” “memory,” “personalization,” “activity” and “connected apps.” Labels differ by country, age, subscription and account type.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does deleting an AI chat remove it from the model immediately?
Usually not. Deletion removes the account-visible conversation and starts the provider’s retention process, but safety, legal or security copies may remain and data already used in a model may not be technically reversible. Check the provider’s stated deletion window and exceptions.
Recommended Free Tools
Can my employer read prompts after I disable AI training?
Yes, if you use a managed work or school account. Training protection governs model improvement, while administrators may retain logs for security, compliance, e-discovery or troubleshooting; follow your organization’s acceptable-use and retention rules.
Will a VPN or browser privacy extension stop AI personalization?
No. Those tools can reduce network or tracking exposure, but personalization controls are enforced inside the AI account and its connected services. You still need to disable memory, training and activity settings and delete stored data.
Are private social-media posts safe from AI systems?
They are less exposed than public posts, but the platform, approved processors and people who can view or copy them may still process them. Review the social network’s data-sharing settings and avoid posting information that you would not want used in a product feature or retained in a screenshot.
What should I do if an AI app exposed sensitive information about me?
Save the response and relevant account details, stop sharing additional data, and use the provider’s privacy or safety reporting channel. Request deletion of the source conversation and connected activity, change compromised credentials, and consider notifying your organization or a regulator if the information involves other people or regulated records.
