The simplest way to start World of Warcraft is to install the retail game through the Battle.net desktop app and use its free trial first. Create or sign in to a Battle.net account, choose World of Warcraft (not Classic), install it, and begin in Exile’s Reach. Retail play is free through level 20, including level-20 dungeons and quests; a subscription or Game Time is required to continue beyond that point. You do not need to buy the current Midnight expansion to find out whether WoW suits you. As of October 29, 2026, a subscription includes progression through level 80, while Midnight adds the current expansion journey toward level 90.
This guide walks through account setup, version and realm choices, your first session, hardware checks, social play, and the point at which paying for access makes sense.

Which WoW version should a new player install?
Install the standard retail version if you want the current free-trial route and Blizzard’s guided newcomer experience. The Battle.net launcher also lists Classic versions, and Blizzard has announced World of Warcraft: Forever for November 4, 2026, but neither should be treated as the equivalent of the retail trial described here.
| Version | What a newcomer should know | Free-trial status |
|---|---|---|
| Retail World of Warcraft | Current game, Exile’s Reach introduction, modern systems, and the Dragonflight → The War Within → Midnight progression path. | Playable through level 20, including level-20 quests and dungeons. |
| WoW Classic | A separate, older-style ruleset and progression experience. Choose it only if your friends specifically play Classic or you want that version’s design. | Blizzard says the retail free trial does not apply to Classic. |
| World of Warcraft: Forever | Announced as a separate version scheduled for November 4, 2026. Its access rules and launch state are distinct from retail. | Blizzard says a subscription or Game Time will be required. |
A subscription provides access to both retail and Classic, but that does not make their characters, realms, tutorials, or progression interchangeable. Ask friends which version they use before you create a character.

Blizzard’s World of Warcraft site is the safest place to confirm the currently listed versions and announcements. Because access rules can change around a new launch, recheck the official pages after November 5, 2026.
How do I create an account and install World of Warcraft?
You can reach the first playable area without buying an expansion. The process is the same whether you are starting on Windows or macOS, although the system requirements differ.
- Create or sign in to Battle.net. Use the account page at account.battle.net. If you already play another Blizzard title, use that existing login.
- Install the Battle.net desktop app. Download the Windows or Mac version from Blizzard’s Battle.net desktop-app page, then sign in.
- Select the game. In the launcher’s game list, choose World of Warcraft. Do not select Classic or another separately listed version if you are following the retail trial.
- Choose the intended account. If your Battle.net login has more than one WoW license, check the account selector before installing. Characters and purchases are attached to the selected license.
- Click Install, select a location, and wait for the launcher to finish. The launcher may allow play while additional files are downloading; a partially installed client can produce missing-texture or connection errors, so let it complete before troubleshooting.
- Click Play. On first launch, allow the game through your operating system’s firewall when prompted. Sign in with the same Battle.net account used by the launcher.
Blizzard’s new-player starting information is the reference for current labels and account rules. Menu names can change slightly between launcher updates, but the important decision is always the game-version selector.
Is World of Warcraft free to play?
Retail WoW is free to try through level 20. Blizzard’s February 25, 2026 guide states: “All playable content is free up to level 20, including level 20 Dungeons and quests, with a Free Trial.” You can create characters, complete the opening zones, learn your class, and run eligible dungeons without entering payment details for an expansion.
Level 20 is a progression boundary, not a short timed demo. When you reach it, you can continue exploring the trial content, but advancing beyond the trial requires either a recurring subscription or purchased Game Time. Blizzard’s current access description says that subscription access opens content through level 80. The latest expansion, Midnight, is a separate purchase for players who want its content and progression toward level 90.
What each payment unlocks
- Free trial: Retail content and characters up to level 20, including level-20 quests and dungeons.
- Subscription or Game Time: Continued retail progression and subscription-included content through level 80, plus the social and account features Blizzard lists for subscribed players.
- Midnight: Current-expansion content and the route toward the level-90 cap. It is not a prerequisite for testing the game.
Blizzard’s prices vary by region, billing period, and promotion, so check the purchase screen for your country rather than relying on an old guide’s number. Treat the trial as a way to make an informed decision: play until level 20, then pay only if you want to continue.

What should I do during my first session?
Follow the built-in tutorial instead of trying to learn every system at once. The intended newcomer route teaches movement, interaction, class abilities, and inventory management before sending you into the wider story.
1. Create a character around a concept you will enjoy
Choose a race and class whose fantasy appeals to you: a heavily armored fighter, a spellcaster, a healer, a shapeshifter, or something else you want to inhabit. There is no evidence-backed “easiest class” that applies to every new player, and class combat has been substantially revised for Midnight. A class you enjoy practicing is usually a better first choice than a tier-list ranking aimed at high-end players.
Keep your first character simple. You can make additional characters later, and the game’s early levels are designed to teach abilities gradually. If you expect to play with friends, ask whether they need a particular role, but do not choose a role you dislike just to fill a theoretical group slot.
2. Complete Exile’s Reach
Exile’s Reach is Blizzard’s newcomer island. Follow its objectives, read the ability prompts, and practice the basic loop: move to a quest marker, interact with an object or non-player character, defeat enemies, collect rewards, and return for the next objective.

- Movement: Keyboard movement and camera control are more important than perfect key bindings at the start.
- Combat: Put your main attack and defensive or utility abilities where your fingers can find them. The action bar grows as you level.
- Loot and inventory: Collect quest rewards, equip upgrades, and sell or delete low-value items when your bags fill.
- Interactions: Many objectives require clicking a game object, not simply defeating an enemy.
- Map and quest tracking: The map and objective tracker show where to go; you do not need an external route for the tutorial.
Do not rush past the explanations. Exile’s Reach is short compared with the rest of WoW, and the habits learned there prevent confusion later.
3. Continue through the guided story
After the introduction, Blizzard’s current newcomer path guides characters through Dragonflight, then The War Within, with Midnight available when you own that expansion. The broad level framing is Dragonflight toward 70 and The War Within toward 80; exact quests and boosts can change as updates arrive.

Follow the campaign markers if you want a coherent narrative. If a raid encounter is part of the story, Blizzard’s Story Mode offers a lower-pressure way to see relevant narrative beats. You do not need to begin with organized, high-difficulty raiding.
4. Use newcomer chat when it is available
Blizzard can place new players and experienced guides in a newcomer chat channel. Ask focused questions there—such as how to find a quest objective, what a stat means, or where to learn a profession—and thank people who answer. The channel’s availability and moderation can vary by region and version, so do not assume every realm has the same activity.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How do realms, role-play, and War Mode work?
Pick your realm with your friends, not by trying to find a universally “best” server. Blizzard distinguishes normal realms from role-play realms, while War Mode controls whether you opt into open-world player-versus-player conflict.
Coordinate a realm before creating characters
Ask your friends for the exact realm name and whether they play retail or Classic. Cross-realm grouping and social features do not work identically across every version or activity, and a character created on the wrong realm can make joining a guild or meeting in the world unnecessarily complicated.
A normal realm is the default choice for players who want standard role-play expectations. A role-play realm has community rules and conventions encouraging players to act as their characters; choose one if that style appeals to you and read its conduct guidance.
Understand War Mode before enabling it
War Mode is Blizzard’s opt-in setting for open-world PvP. Blizzard says the toggle appears in the talents interface at level 20 and specifies where it can be enabled or disabled. Because the setting can change which players and bonuses you encounter in the world, leave it off while learning the game unless you deliberately want open-world PvP.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
War Mode is different from battlegrounds or other organized PvP activities. You can learn the basic game without enabling it, and turning it on is a choice rather than a requirement for leveling.
Can I play with friends who already play WoW?
Yes, but first match the essentials: retail versus Classic (or another announced version), realm, region, and whether your group expects War Mode. Once those align, friends can explain systems and accompany you through eligible activities without taking over every decision.
- Confirm the version. “WoW” can mean retail, Classic, or a separate seasonal or announced client.
- Exchange exact realm names. Similar names are easy to confuse.
- Decide on a pace. Ask friends to let you read quest text and learn your abilities if this is your first character.
- Use beginner-friendly group content. Normal quests and lower-pressure dungeons teach positioning and cooperation better than jumping straight into advanced raids.
- Agree on communication. Voice chat is optional; the in-game party and chat tools are enough for a first outing.
If a friend is on a different realm or version, do not assume a paid transfer will solve it. Check Blizzard’s current cross-realm and grouping rules first; those rules change more often than the basic tutorial.
What computer does WoW require?
Check Blizzard’s complete, current requirements before buying hardware. The Windows requirements displayed by Blizzard include a graphics processor capable of DirectX 12 with 3 GB of graphics memory, but that line is only one part of the requirement list and is not a recommendation that every player purchase a new card.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use this compatibility checklist
- Operating system: Confirm that your Windows or macOS version is supported on Blizzard’s current requirements page.
- Processor and memory: Compare your CPU and RAM with the listed minimum and recommended specifications.
- Graphics: Verify DirectX 12 capability and the listed graphics-memory requirement on Windows. Integrated graphics, laptops, and Macs have different upgrade limits.
- Storage: Leave room for the installed client and future patches; Blizzard’s launcher shows the current space needed.
- Internet: A stable broadband connection matters more than chasing a particular speed number. Avoid large downloads over a capped mobile connection.
- Drivers: Keep your operating-system and graphics drivers current, using the computer maker’s supported package on laptops.
If an upgrade is necessary, first confirm that you have an upgradeable Windows desktop, a compatible power supply, sufficient case clearance, and the required display outputs. A desktop graphics card is not automatically suitable for a laptop or Mac. Do not buy a component based only on the DirectX 12/3 GB line; compare the entire system with Blizzard’s displayed requirements.
Common first-launch problems
- “Play” is disabled: The launcher may still be downloading or updating files. Wait for the progress bar to finish and restart the app.
- Login loops: Sign out of Battle.net, verify the selected WoW license, and sign in again. Check Blizzard’s service-status notices before changing settings.
- Crashes or graphical corruption: Update supported drivers, reset in-game graphics settings, and remove incompatible add-ons. If the problem began after an update, temporarily run without add-ons.
- Lag: Distinguish network latency from low frame rate. A crowded area can lower frame rate even when your internet connection is fine; graphics settings and the in-game network display help separate the two.
- Insufficient disk space: Free space before patching rather than deleting random game folders. Use the launcher’s scan or repair function if an interrupted update left files inconsistent.
When should I subscribe or buy Midnight?
Subscribe or add Game Time when you have reached level 20 and know you want more quests, dungeons, social play, and progression. Buy Midnight when you specifically want its current-expansion zones, story, systems, and level-90 progression—not merely because you are installing WoW for the first time.

A practical decision sequence
- Finish enough of Exile’s Reach to understand the controls. If movement and combat already feel unpleasant, purchasing an expansion will not fix that.
- Play several levels in the trial. Try questing, at least one dungeon if available, inventory management, and your class’s basic resource system.
- Check your social plan. If your friends are subscribed and you want to join their activities, subscription access may be the next logical step.
- Compare current account options. Blizzard may offer recurring subscriptions, Game Time, or promotions; read the terms and regional price on the purchase screen.
- Add Midnight only for its content. Subscription-included access and the latest expansion are separate decisions.
This staged approach avoids paying for a bundle before you know whether you enjoy the game’s pacing and combat. It also keeps your choice valid if Blizzard changes expansion packaging or launches another version.
What should a new player avoid?
- Do not install the wrong client. Classic and retail can appear next to each other in Battle.net.
- Do not pick a realm without checking with friends. Realm choice affects where your character starts its social life.
- Do not copy an endgame build blindly. A high-level talent or key-binding guide can overwhelm a beginner; learn one ability at a time.
- Do not enable War Mode accidentally. Read the prompt at level 20 and treat open-world PvP as an opt-in choice.
- Do not buy hardware from one specification line. Verify the complete requirements and your machine’s upgrade path.
- Do not assume every old guide is current. Expansion names, level caps, tutorials, and account rules change. Check Blizzard’s dated announcements when a guide conflicts with the launcher.
A first-week checklist
- Battle.net account created and email secured.
- Retail World of Warcraft selected in the launcher.
- Character created on the realm and version your friends use.
- Exile’s Reach completed without skipping the basic prompts.
- Main abilities placed on the action bar and key bindings adjusted for comfort.
- Inventory, map, quest tracker, and talent interface understood at a basic level.
- At least one quest chain and a beginner-appropriate dungeon attempted.
- War Mode decision made deliberately at level 20.
- Computer checked against Blizzard’s complete current requirements.
- Subscription/Game Time considered only after deciding you want to continue.
- Midnight evaluated as optional current-expansion content, not as an entry requirement.
Bottom line: Start with retail’s level-20 trial, learn the fundamentals in Exile’s Reach, coordinate version and realm choices with friends, and pay in stages. Subscription or Game Time is the next step after the trial; Midnight is an additional choice for current-expansion play.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play World of Warcraft without a credit card?
Yes. Retail’s free trial lets you play through level 20 without buying an expansion. Continuing afterward requires a subscription or Game Time, which can be purchased through the account options available in your region.
Can I change my character’s class after creating it?
No; class is chosen when the character is created. You can make another character on the same account, so experimenting with a second class is safer than deleting your first character immediately.
Do I need a gaming mouse or special keyboard for WoW?
No special peripherals are required. A standard keyboard and mouse are enough for the tutorial and early dungeons; comfortable key bindings matter more than premium hardware.
Is Classic better for someone who dislikes modern WoW?
Classic is a different game experience rather than a universally better beginner option. Its free-trial rules differ from retail, so choose it because you want its older systems or because your friends play there, not because you expect the retail trial to apply.
