Yes, you can start World of Warcraft as a beginner and play much of it solo—but choose your version before you create a character. As of October 30, 2026, Battle.net offers modern World of Warcraft (with Midnight live), World of Warcraft: Classic, and the upcoming World of Warcraft: Forever, scheduled to launch globally on November 4. They have different character options and rules, and a character does not move between them. For a modern game with the most solo support, start with retail; for an original-Azeroth journey built around leveling from 1 to 60, consider Forever; choose Classic if you specifically want its realm-based experience.
Which version of World of Warcraft should a beginner start with?
Pick the version that matches the experience you want, then coordinate with friends before making a character. Retail is the modern game; Forever is a new, separate 1–60 reimagining of original Azeroth launching November 4, 2026; and Classic is a separate version with traditional realms. Their characters and communities are not interchangeable.

| Version | Best fit | What to know first |
|---|---|---|
| Retail: World of Warcraft / Midnight | Players who want modern systems, the current story, and the broadest solo scaffolding. | The official new-player route begins in Exile’s Reach, then points to Dragonflight for levels 10–70 and an accelerated The War Within story for 70–80. Owners of Midnight continue the Worldsoul Saga there. A subscription or Game Time is needed to progress beyond Starter Edition limits. |
| World of Warcraft: Forever | Players who want a journey through reimagined original Azeroth, with a level cap of 60. | It launches November 4, 2026, and is included with an active WoW subscription or Game Time. Choose a Ruleset instead of a realm; grouping requires the same Ruleset and faction. |
| World of Warcraft: Classic | Players who want the Classic experience and its traditional realm structure. | Characters can group only with players on the same realm, so friends should select the same one. |
The Forever login window is 23:00 UTC on November 4, according to Blizzard. That is 3:00 p.m. PST on November 4 in the Americas and 00:00 on November 5 in Europe. The opening is region-specific; check the Battle.net app for the local availability shown for your region. Blizzard describes Forever as a home alongside modern and Classic WoW, not a replacement for either.
In retail, the Starter Edition lets you try the game with restrictions. A subscription or Game Time unlocks play beyond level 20, higher dungeons and raids, guilds, unrestricted chat, and the Auction House. The precise current monthly price is not stated in the available official material; check the Battle.net shop for the price and currency applicable to your region.

Which class should I play as a beginner?
Choose a class by the way you want to fight and the roles you might enjoy, not by a supposed universal beginner ranking. Blizzard does not publish a ranked “best beginner class” list. The retail class roster has 13 classes; Forever launches with nine, so check the version before settling on a recommendation or looking up a guide.
A class determines your combat toolkit: melee or ranged attacks, spells, pets, and whether you can tank, heal, deal damage, or switch among those roles. In a group, tanks protect allies and manage enemy attention, healers restore health, and damage dealers focus on defeating enemies. Some classes offer several roles; others primarily deal damage. Tanks and healers tend to carry more group responsibility, while damage-focused classes usually have fewer group duties.

| Druid | Yes | Tank, healer, damage | Can cover several roles and use different forms. Kotaku describes it as a flexible choice for someone not yet sure which role to settle into. |
| Hunter | Yes | Damage | Fights at range and can use a pet; Forever also has a melee variation. A pet can take pressure off you while questing alone. |
| Mage | Yes | Damage | Ranged spellcaster with Arcane, Fire, and Frost styles. Kotaku notes strong damage and utility, but less durability. |
| Paladin | Yes | Tank, healer, damage | Uses melee combat and the Light; can protect allies or heal as well as deal damage. Forever adds Undead Paladins. |
| Priest | Yes | Healer, damage | Can heal or deal ranged damage, including as Shadow. Kotaku characterizes it as relatively fragile. |
| Rogue | Yes | Damage | Uses stealth, poisons, and combo points; can pick locks. |
| Shaman | Yes | Healer, damage | Uses elemental powers and totems; Forever adds Dwarf Shaman and a Skyborne Shaman path. |
| Warlock | Yes | Damage | Uses demons and life-draining magic. Pet management matters when playing solo. |
| Warrior | Yes | Tank, damage | Armed melee combat, with a tank path as well as damage. |
| Monk | No | Tank, healer, damage | Retail class; not on Forever’s launch roster. |
| Demon Hunter | No | Tank, damage | Retail class; not on Forever’s launch roster. |
| Death Knight | No | Tank, damage | Retail class; not on Forever’s launch roster. |

If you are choosing in Forever and want a forgiving outdoor questing style, community descriptions often point to Hunter, Paladin, Warlock (using its pets), or Druid. Those are practical impressions, not an official class ranking, and none makes every encounter effortless. Blizzard’s advice is to read the character-creation tooltips and choose the fantasy that appeals to you. Wowpedia’s long-running beginner guidance suggests trying several characters to around level 5–15 before committing; that can reveal whether you enjoy the pace and feel of a class without asking you to master it first.
What race should I pick in WoW?
Pick a race whose appearance and starting experience you like, after confirming it can be the class you want. Race affects appearance, starting zone, racial abilities, and available classes; in most cases it also determines your faction. In Forever, Skyborne characters choose between two faction-aligned paths at creation.
For Forever, Blizzard’s September 2026 class-and-race matrix includes the new combinations Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, and Undead Paladin. That means some combinations that may sound unusual—such as Undead Paladin—are possible in this version. The official Forever roster also adds Skyborne, a new race with two alignments:
- Windshapers: Horde-aligned and able to be Shamans.
- High Order: Alliance-aligned and able to be Mages.
- Both paths: can be Druids, Hunters, Rogues, or Warriors, and start on Zephras Isle, a level 1–12 zone.
Skyborne and Zephras Isle require the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher digital upgrade. Kotaku reported the Heroic Pack at $30 at the time of its October 2026 coverage; check the shop for current regional pricing. The race is optional: it is not a requirement for accessing Forever’s base game, which is included with an active subscription or Game Time.

Retail has its own race list and unlocks. Blizzard’s playable-races page identifies Allied Races that must be recruited in-game before they become playable. Those include Void Elf, Lightforged Draenei, Dark Iron Dwarf, Kul Tiran, Mechagnome, Earthen, and Haranir for the Alliance; and Nightborne, Highmountain Tauren, Mag’har Orc, Zandalari Troll, Vulpera, Earthen, and Haranir for the Horde. This is not a complete list of every retail race. Do not assume a race/class combination available in Forever is also available in retail, or vice versa.
Can you play a Human Hunter, Undead Paladin, or Dwarf Shaman? In Forever, yes: Blizzard’s published matrix lists all three. For other versions, check that version’s character-creation options rather than relying on Forever’s matrix.
Alliance or Horde?
Choose the same faction as the friends you want to play with, unless your race choice determines that choice for you. In Forever, most races are fixed to one faction; Skyborne choose their alignment at character creation. Blizzard says players can group, join guilds, run dungeons, and raid only with people on the same Forever Ruleset and faction.
In retail, Alliance and Horde are still meaningful social divisions. Wowpedia describes interaction between the factions as limited outside combat, so it is safest to coordinate the faction before you create characters with friends. Race and faction are linked for most options, but Pandaren choose a side. If you are playing solo and have no faction preference, choose a race and class combination you like and verify the faction shown during character creation.

For Forever, you do not pick a traditional realm: you choose a Ruleset. For retail, you still choose a realm, while Classic uses realms and requires friends to be on the same one to group. These choices affect who you encounter and, especially in Forever, which players can join your groups.
Forever’s launch Rulesets are:
- Normal: Focuses on adventuring and fighting monsters, with PvP at your discretion. Blizzard’s New Player’s Starter Guide calls it “a welcoming place to learn.” It is the straightforward choice if you are new or do not want open-world PvP to be a constant risk.
- PvP: Makes encounters with opposing players a risk through much of the open world. Choose it if that risk is part of the experience you want, not because you assume it is the default for everyone.
- Roleplay: Adds naming and behavior conventions intended to support roleplay and immersion.
- Roleplay-PvP: Combines roleplay conventions with open-world PvP risk.
- Hardcore (later): Built around the possibility that a character’s journey ends with death. Blizzard had not announced a launch date for this option in the material available on October 30, 2026.
Ruleset choice is a social lock, not just a personal difficulty setting: Forever characters can group, join guilds, run dungeons, and raid only with players on the same Ruleset and faction. Blizzard puts it plainly: “Characters can group, join guilds, run dungeons, and raid only with players on the same Ruleset and faction.” Ask your friends which version, faction, and Ruleset they plan to choose before character creation.

Forever also asks you to choose an Experience Preset before your Ruleset. Classic uses standard-definition character models and fewer modern UI helpers; Enhanced offers high-definition models, quest markers, a one-bag interface, and transmog. Blizzard recommends Enhanced if you are unsure. The preset is a starting point rather than a permanent commitment: character models can later be changed in Options or at a Barbershop. Two-part character names must be unique within your region.
In retail, Normal realms do not make contested zones free-for-all PvP areas. Open-world PvP is opt-in through War Mode: you can turn it on from the Talents interface starting at level 20 in a faction or capital city, and turn it off at a rest location. With War Mode enabled, players from any realm can take part in open-world PvP with other War Mode players. Retail RP realms use the Normal ruleset and do not have open-world PvP.

Yes. You can experience the outdoor world and story alone in all three versions, but the amount of solo support differs. Retail has NPC-supported dungeons, solo adventures, and Story Mode raids; Forever is designed for solo outdoor questing but expects groups for its dungeons and raids.
What can you do solo in retail?
Retail’s official “Going Solo” guide describes several options. New players begin in Exile’s Reach, a guided introduction whose first dungeon is supported by NPCs. Retail also has Follower Dungeons: Normal-difficulty dungeons that you queue for through Group Finder with four NPC teammates. You choose your role, the NPCs fill the others, and an optional Dungeon Assistance setting lets them lead.
Delves are another solo route, available from level 70 in Khaz Algar. In The War Within, Brann Bronzebeard accompanies the player. Blizzard describes Delves as completely solo short adventures of about 10–15 minutes, with 11 difficulty tiers and epic rewards comparable to group raiding. Rewards and availability can depend on the current game and content; check in-game guidance for what applies to your character.
Story Mode raids let you see raid story content solo or with up to four friends, with NPC companions. Blizzard’s example for Azj-Kahet describes nine NPCs when entering alone. That is a way to experience the narrative, not a claim that every raid activity or group challenge is playable solo. The official leveling outline in the guide moves from Exile’s Reach (levels 1–10) to Dragonflight (10–70), then The War Within (70–80); Midnight continues the story for players who own it.

What can you do solo in Forever?
Forever’s outdoor quests, exploration, and professions are designed for a single adventurer, who may meet other players at a campfire. Blizzard says the launch includes more than 1,000 new quests across the level 1–60 journey and nine new five-player dungeons spanning levels 13–60. The dungeons, battlegrounds, and raids are group activities; Blizzard has not described retail-style Follower Dungeons, Delves, or Story Mode raids for Forever.
The first Forever raids—Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit, and Onyxia’s Lair—are scheduled to unlock on December 9, 2026. The available official launch material establishes the date, but not raid sizes; do not rely on unofficial size claims as definitive. Outdoor leveling alone is a reasonable plan, but if raids or dungeons are a priority, choose a Ruleset and faction where you can find other players.
Death in Forever does not mean permanent character loss in the standard launch experience described by the guide: you can release to a graveyard and run back, or use a Spirit Healer, which incurs durability loss and may cause Resurrection Sickness. Hardcore is different and was listed as a later Ruleset, with its timing not yet announced as of October 30.
Which class is best for solo?
There is no official ranking, and “best” depends on whether you mean outdoor questing, surviving mistakes, or completing group content without friends. For Forever outdoor leveling, community beginner coverage often names Hunter, Paladin, Warlock with its demons, and Druid as easier-feeling options; pets or flexible roles can help, but this is not a Blizzard tier list.
In retail, solo tools reduce the need to select a class for group roles just to see content: Follower Dungeons fill missing roles with NPCs, and Delves are explicitly solo. If you intend to play group dungeons later, a class that can tank or heal may open additional roles, but those roles also carry responsibilities. Start with the play style you enjoy; you can learn a damage role before deciding whether to tank or heal.

How do you get started in Forever?
Use this order to avoid choosing a character on the wrong version or in the wrong social pool:
- Make or secure your Battle.net account. Blizzard’s Forever starter guide advises enabling two-factor authentication.
- Confirm access. An active WoW subscription or Game Time includes Forever. The Skyborne race and Zephras Isle require the Heroic Pack or a higher digital upgrade. Review the system requirements on the Battle.net shop product page before installing.
- Install the right game. Use the Battle.net desktop app on Windows or Mac and select the Forever install. Controller support is in beta, so do not assume it is a finished or universally supported setup.
- Agree with friends first. Confirm Forever, faction, and Ruleset together. In Forever, a mismatch on faction or Ruleset prevents grouping and guild membership.
- Choose your Experience Preset, then Ruleset. Enhanced is Blizzard’s suggested starting point if you are unsure; Normal is the welcoming Ruleset recommended for newcomers.
- Create your character. Check that your preferred race can be your class, then choose a name. Skyborne players also select Windshaper or High Order, which determines their faction alignment.
- Follow early quests and learn your controls. A yellow
!marks a quest to accept; a yellow?marks a turn-in. The default keys listed in Blizzard’s guide are L for the quest log, M for the map, P for the spellbook, C for the character pane, and K for professions; Escape opens Options. - Visit your class trainer as you level. Carry food and drink, and bind your Hearthstone with an innkeeper so you have a return point.
- Choose professions that suit your routine. Each Forever character can learn two primary professions and all three secondary professions: Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid. Gathering professions—Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning—pair naturally with outdoor questing.
- Use campsites. Sitting or crafting for at least one minute at a campsite can provide camp-feature benefits from nearby players’ professions, giving solo travelers a reason to meet others without needing a permanent group.
These are Forever-specific launch instructions, not a checklist to apply to retail or Classic unchanged. For retail, follow the in-game Exile’s Reach introduction and its current character-creation guidance.
Do I need friends to play World of Warcraft?
No, not to begin questing or follow the open-world story. Retail is the easiest fit if you want NPCs to fill group roles or want solo-friendly versions of selected content; Forever supports solo leveling but reserves its five-player dungeons and raids for groups. Friends matter most when you want to play together: settle the version first, then match faction and, in Forever, Ruleset before creating characters.
There is no official beginner class ranking, no single race that is best for everyone, and no reason to buy an optional race pack just to access Forever’s base game. Decide what kind of adventure you want, pick compatible character options, and treat group content as an invitation to socialize—not a prerequisite for starting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move my WoW character from Classic to retail?
No. Retail, Classic, and Forever are separate game versions, and their characters do not move between them. Treat each version as its own character and community when planning with friends.
Does choosing Enhanced in Forever lock me into HD graphics?
No. Blizzard describes the Experience Preset as a starting point, and says the character model setting can later be changed in Options or at a Barbershop. The choice also affects interface conveniences, so it is not only a graphics toggle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan a new Forever character learn every profession?
Each character can learn two primary professions, plus all three secondary professions: Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid. That makes it possible to keep the secondary skills without using either primary-profession slot.
Is a World of Warcraft guidebook required to start?
No. Blizzard’s in-game tooltips and starter guidance cover the basic decisions and controls. Be cautious with paperbacks marketed as official Midnight strategy guides: the research identifies unofficial listings using that kind of wording.
