How to Spot AI-Generated Images and Videos on Social Media

Use several clues together: check who posted the media and what the post claims, inspect the image or video for visual and motion inconsistencies, look for platform labels or Content Credentials, and search for earlier copies. None of those checks—alone or in combination—automatically proves that a post is real or AI-generated. A label or provenance record can reveal useful history; whether the depicted event actually happened requires separate corroboration.

How can I tell if a picture on Facebook or Instagram is AI-generated?

Start with the post’s context, then examine the image at full size and look for corroboration elsewhere. An odd-looking detail can be a warning sign, but it is not a verdict: genuine photos can be distorted by editing or compression, and synthetic images can look convincing.

Check the claim and the account

  • Read the caption closely. Note what event, place, and date the image is supposed to show, and whether the wording makes a factual claim or presents a joke, illustration, or speculation.
  • Look at the account’s history and posting behavior. A new or suspicious account, sensational wording, or an unsupported claim raises the need for verification; none proves the image is synthetic.
  • Search for independent corroboration, such as reporting by reputable outlets or accounts from identifiable eyewitnesses. Check that the corroboration supports the specific event and location being claimed, not merely a similar-looking image.
  • Check whether the account identifies the image as an illustration, parody, advertising creative, or AI-assisted work. A disclosure can explain how the media was made, but it does not prove that every statement in the caption is accurate.
  • Compare the post’s timing with the alleged event. A photograph that appeared online years before the event it supposedly depicts may be recycled, miscaptioned, or manipulated, regardless of whether AI was involved.

Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg has advised people to consider whether the account is trustworthy and whether details look or sound unnatural. That is a useful starting point, not a substitute for evidence. Treat the account, caption, and timing as context that determines how much checking is warranted.

Inspect details at full resolution

Zoom in on signs and other lettering, fingers, teeth, jewelry, reflections, shadows, and the edges where objects meet. Google’s guidance identifies garbled text, errors in hands, teeth, or background elements, inconsistent lighting or shadows, and repetitive patterns as details worth checking. Also look for perspective that does not fit the scene or textures that repeat unnaturally.

Examine small text in several places rather than focusing on one suspicious letter. Generated images can produce characters that look plausible at a glance but become nonsensical when enlarged. Check logos, license plates, storefront names, book spines, and clothing labels for warped or inconsistent forms. Inspect whether a person’s fingers, earrings, glasses, or teeth have a coherent shape and count. Look at reflections in windows, mirrors, water, and shiny surfaces: the reflected scene should match the subject and light source.

Follow shadows across the scene. The direction and softness of a shadow should make sense for the apparent light source, and objects at the same depth should not have contradictory lighting. Repeated foliage, bricks, crowd members, or fabric patterns can also indicate a generated texture, particularly when identical shapes recur with little natural variation. Impossible boundaries—such as hair merging into a wall, a hand passing through an object, or an object that appears both in front of and behind another—deserve closer review.

These clues are useful because image generators may produce inconsistencies in small or complex details. They are not exclusive to AI: low resolution, motion blur, aggressive compression, retouching, and ordinary camera limitations can also make details look wrong. Treat an artifact as a reason to investigate the post, not as proof by itself. If the file is tiny or heavily compressed, say that the quality prevents a reliable visual judgment instead of overstating what you see.

How do I spot a deepfake video?

Check both individual frames and how the video changes over time. Pause at several points to inspect faces, mouths, hands, reflections, and background details, then play the clip while listening for speech that sounds unnatural or does not match the visible mouth movement.

Check for inconsistencies across frames

  • Look for features that shift shape or position abruptly, such as a mouth, teeth, fingers, jewelry, or an object’s boundary.
  • Notice whether lighting, shadows, reflections, and perspective remain consistent as the camera or subject moves.
  • Listen for unnatural speech timing or a mismatch between spoken sounds and mouth movements.
  • Watch hair, glasses, earrings, and other fine details as the subject turns. They should remain attached and behave consistently from frame to frame.
  • Check the background as well as the face. A sign, railing, crowd member, or architectural edge that morphs between frames can reveal synthesis or a severe editing problem.

Use a player that lets you pause, advance one frame at a time, and replay a short section. Inspect several moments, not just the frame that looks most distorted. A face-swap may look acceptable in a frontal shot but break down when the person turns, is partly occluded, or moves into different lighting. Conversely, a genuine clip can show blur, rolling-shutter distortion, dropped frames, or poor lip-sync from an ordinary recording or re-encoding.

Audio deserves the same caution. A synthetic or altered voice may have unusual pauses, stress, breath sounds, or timing, but a noisy microphone, dubbing, translation, or editing can produce similar effects. Compare the voice with known recordings only as a clue, and verify the speaker’s alleged statement through a transcript, an original broadcast, or a credible report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A single paused frame can hide motion-related problems, while a low-quality clip can make genuine footage look irregular. Conversely, a smooth-looking clip is not proof of authenticity. Verify what the video claims to show by checking its source and looking for independent evidence of the event.

What do AI labels, watermarks, and Content Credentials tell me?

They can provide evidence about a file’s origin, editing history, or a platform’s detection and disclosure process. They do not, by themselves, establish whether the depicted scene or claim is true.

Platform labels and disclosures

Platforms may label media when they detect a recognized signal or when a person discloses AI use. Meta and LinkedIn describe labeling and disclosure systems, but their coverage is not complete. The absence of a label on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or another platform does not establish that content is human-made; the platform may not recognize the signal, or the file may have lost it along the way.

A label can refer to different things. It may indicate that the creator disclosed AI assistance, that the platform detected an embedded signal, or that the platform identified a particular type of manipulated media. Read the label’s explanatory text and open any linked details rather than treating every label as identical. A disclosure that an image was edited with AI does not necessarily mean the entire image was generated, and it does not establish that the caption’s account of an event is true.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coverage also changes as platforms revise their policies and detection systems. A label may not appear on an older post, a repost, a cross-platform copy, or a file uploaded in a format the platform cannot analyze. Labels can be delayed, and a user may fail to disclose use. Therefore, treat the platform signal as one piece of evidence and continue with source and claim verification.

Content Credentials and C2PA

Content Credentials are signed provenance information associated with a file. They can record details such as origin, tools, and edits, and can apply to AI-generated as well as non-AI media. The Content Authenticity Initiative says these credentials are meant to describe a piece of content’s origin and history, not to declare it real or fake.

When a platform displays a C2PA icon, opening it may reveal assertions about AI use, the app or device, a creator, an issuer, and the date the information was issued. Such information is useful for tracing how a file was made or handled. It does not independently verify that a depicted event happened as shown. A credential can accurately document that a camera captured and an editor cropped a photograph while leaving the caption’s location or interpretation unverified.

Credentials are signed, so tampering with the recorded assertions can be detectable. That does not make them universal: many tools do not create credentials, and ordinary actions such as screenshots, conversions, cropping, or social-platform processing can remove them. A file without credentials is therefore not automatically suspicious, just as a file with credentials is not automatically truthful.

Invisible watermarks and detection results

Some generators embed invisible signals in media. A signal may survive some transformations, but these systems are model-specific rather than universal. A watermark check that finds no signal says only that the check did not find a supported signal; it cannot rule out content made by another generator.

Automated classifiers and APIs can help prioritize media for review, but their coverage is limited and a detection result is not a truth test. Microsoft’s technical documentation says that a result showing no provenance information does not necessarily mean content was not AI-generated. The same principle applies to a classifier that returns a low synthetic probability: it may not support the generator, file type, language, resolution, or edits used to make the media.

How can I check provenance on the original file?

If you can obtain the original image or video file, inspect its provenance information and available metadata. Social-media downloads, screenshots, crops, and re-encoded copies may have lost or changed information, so a missing record in a shared copy is inconclusive.

  1. Get the closest available original. Prefer the file from the person or organization that created or first published it over a screenshot or a copy downloaded from a social post. Preserve the file unchanged before opening it in editing software, and note where and when you obtained it.
  2. Check for Content Credentials. Open a displayed C2PA icon or inspect the file with a C2PA Viewer. ORI describes its viewer as free and open-source; the viewer can show signed origin and edit history when that information is present. Record the issuer, tool, creator, issue date, and listed edits so you can compare them with the post’s story.
  3. Review photo metadata when available. On an original photo, inspect EXIF fields such as camera, date, and software. A camera model and capture time can help compare the file with the claimed circumstances, while editing software fields may show that the image was processed. Treat these fields as clues about the file, not confirmation of the scene: they may be absent, altered, or lost during sharing.
  4. Interpret missing information cautiously. Unsupported tools, screenshots, conversion, cropping, compression, or metadata stripping can leave a synthetic file with no detectable provenance signal. The same absence can occur for other reasons, so it does not settle the question.
  5. Compare versions. If you find several copies, compare dimensions, crops, compression, and edit histories. A later copy may have a different provenance record simply because it was exported or screenshotted, not because the underlying image changed.

Do not upload sensitive personal images to an unfamiliar detector merely to obtain a score. When comparing tools, check whether the service stores uploads, uses them for model training, exposes results publicly, or supports deletion. Privacy and handling terms are part of a responsible verification workflow.

Can reverse image search prove an image is AI?

No. Reverse image search can help locate an earlier copy, a similar image, or a possible original source, but it cannot by itself determine whether an image was generated by AI. Finding no match is not evidence that the image is synthetic.

  1. Submit the clearest version you have to a reverse image search service. If possible, try the full image and a crop of the most distinctive object, face, sign, or background.
  2. Compare any matches with the post: note dates, cropping, captions, and whether the image is actually the same scene. Search results can include visually similar images that are unrelated.
  3. Look for the earliest credible source you can identify, and check whether its account of the image supports the claim in the social post. An established news organization, official agency, or identifiable eyewitness may provide useful context, but verify what that source actually says.
  4. Search distinctive text, names, or locations from the caption separately. A recycled genuine photograph may be paired with a new claim, while an AI image may be copied across accounts with changing captions.
  5. If results are inconclusive, use other checks rather than turning a missing match into a verdict.

A search may find a genuine older photo being recirculated with a new caption, or copies that do not explain where the image first came from. The surrounding evidence and the specific claim still matter. Reverse search is strongest for tracing circulation and weakest as a standalone authenticity detector.

What can Gemini’s SynthID check tell me?

For supported files, Gemini can check for Google SynthID and Content Credentials. A positive SynthID result indicates generation or editing by Google AI; a negative result means only that Google AI was not detected, not that the file was made without AI.

This is a model-specific check, not a universal AI detector. Use it as one signal when the file is supported, then consider provenance, the post’s context, visual evidence, and independent corroboration. A negative result cannot rule out use of other tools. A positive result also answers a narrower question—whether Google’s signal is present—rather than whether the image depicts a true event or whether every part of the file was created by Google AI.

How should I compare AI-image verification tools?

No tool is best for every file. Compare the following before relying on a result:

  • Coverage: Which generators, cameras, platforms, image formats, video formats, languages, and resolutions does it support? A check designed for one vendor’s watermark cannot evaluate every generator.
  • Provenance detail: Does the result show only a yes-or-no signal, or does it expose origin, tool, creator, issuer, issue date, and edit history?
  • Robustness: Can the signal survive a crop, screenshot, export, compression, or screen recording? If not, understand that a shared copy may be untestable even when the original carried a signal.
  • Vendor independence: Does the service check multiple provenance systems, or only one company’s watermark and credentials? A single-vendor result should be described narrowly.
  • Privacy and upload handling: Find out whether files are retained, used for training, shared with others, or deleted on request. Avoid uploading confidential or identifiable media without a clear reason.
  • Clarity of the result: Prefer tools that explain what was detected and explicitly distinguish a provenance signal from a judgment about truth.

The C2PA Viewer is one practical provenance option; ORI describes it as free, open-source software. A free viewer can reveal signed information when present, but it cannot restore credentials stripped from a screenshot or decide whether a caption is accurate. Model-specific checks such as SynthID are useful when their supported signal applies. Neither replaces independent corroboration.

What is the most reliable way to assess a suspicious post?

Use a layered check rather than relying on a single artifact, label, or detector. Keep two questions separate: how the file was created or edited, and whether the event or claim it depicts is true.

  1. Establish what is being claimed. Record the post’s stated date, place, event, speaker, and account. Save the URL or a screenshot for reference, while remembering that a screenshot is not the original file.
  2. Inspect the media. Look for visual or motion inconsistencies at full resolution, while allowing for ordinary image and video quality problems. Check lettering, hands, teeth, reflections, shadows, repetitive textures, object boundaries, lip-sync, and frame-to-frame changes.
  3. Check provenance signals. Open any platform label or C2PA information, and examine the original file’s metadata if you have it. Note exactly what the signal says and what it does not say.
  4. Search for earlier copies. Compare dates, crops, captions, and likely sources rather than interpreting search results as an authenticity score. Look for the earliest credible version and any evidence that the image was reused.
  5. Corroborate the claim independently. Check reputable reporting, official statements, or credible eyewitness accounts that support the same event, rather than simply repeating the post. Confirm the location and date, not just the existence of a similar image.
  6. Use a specialized check when appropriate. If the file is supported, run a model-specific watermark or credential check. Treat a positive result as evidence about that model or provenance system and a negative result as limited to what the tool can detect.
  7. State uncertainty honestly. If the evidence does not settle the question, describe what you could and could not verify instead of calling the media real or fake.

For a tool that inspects provenance, compare what generators and file types it supports, how much origin and edit history it exposes, whether it can handle the version you have, and how it treats uploaded files. A detector’s result is most useful when the tool explains what signal it found and what that signal does—and does not—show.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • “There is no label, so it is real.” Unsupported generators, screenshots, conversions, cropping, compression, and stripped metadata can all produce a no-signal result.
  • “One strange hand proves AI.” Blur, retouching, perspective, and compression can create ordinary artifacts. Check several clues and the source.
  • “The credential proves the story.” Credentials describe origin and edits; they are not a truth verdict about the depicted event.
  • “Reverse search found nothing, so it was generated.” New images, private images, altered crops, and poorly indexed files may have no searchable match.
  • “A detector score is an authenticity score.” Classifiers and APIs have limited coverage and cannot determine whether a claim is true or false.
  • “A label makes the caption false.” AI assistance can be disclosed for a genuine event photo, an illustration, or an edited clip. Verify the claim separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a screenshot still contain Content Credentials?

It may not. Screenshots and re-encoded copies can discard provenance information, so check the original file or a platform’s displayed credential when available.

Does an AI label mean the whole post is false?

No. A label concerns a recognized AI signal or disclosure, not whether the caption’s claim is accurate. Verify the claim separately using credible sources.

Are AI detectors accurate enough to settle whether a video is fake?

No detector covers every generator or file type, and provenance detection does not establish truth. Treat an automated result as a lead to investigate, not a final judgment.

Why might a real photo have no camera metadata?

Metadata can be removed during editing, cropping, screenshots, or social-platform processing. Its absence does not show that the photo was generated by AI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a C2PA or Content Credentials icon prove?

It can provide signed information about origin, tools, creator, issuer, and edits when those assertions are present. It does not independently prove that the depicted event or caption is true.

Can a genuine photo receive an AI label?

Yes. Labels may reflect a disclosure, a recognized signal, or platform processing, and they do not by themselves describe the truth of the scene. Read the label details and verify the claim.

Does a positive SynthID result identify every AI tool used?

No. A positive result indicates Google AI generation or editing for a supported file. It does not rule out additional tools or establish that the accompanying story is accurate.

What if reverse image search returns no results?

Nothing conclusive follows. The image may be new, private, poorly indexed, cropped, or altered. Use provenance, visual checks, account context, and independent corroboration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Content Credentials apply to non-AI photographs?

Yes. They can record origin and edits for both AI-generated and non-AI media, so their presence is provenance evidence rather than a declaration that content is synthetic or authentic.

Should I upload a private video to a free detector?

Only after checking the service’s privacy, retention, training, sharing, and deletion terms. Prefer local or trusted tools for sensitive media, and treat the result as one limited signal.

The Bottom Line

Combine context, visual and motion checks, provenance, reverse search, and independent corroboration. A missing label or metadata is inconclusive, while a credential or detector result describes a signal—not whether the depicted claim is true.
