You can look for labels, provenance records and supported watermarks to learn whether AI may have been involved—but none is a universal detector, and none proves that a post’s claims are true. Treat “Was AI involved?” and “Is this accurate in context?” as two separate questions. Start with the earliest available version, record what a signal actually says, then verify any important claim against independent evidence.
What does it mean to spot AI-generated content?
It means assessing evidence about how an image, video, audio clip or text was made—not deciding whether it feels artificial. A detector result, visible clue or platform label can be useful, but each has limits. Without a supported signal, you may not be able to determine whether AI was involved.

Keep two questions distinct throughout your check:
- Was AI involved? Look for a disclosure, provenance information or a watermark that a tool explicitly supports. Note the issuer and the exact result.
- Is the claim true in context? Check the source, date, location, speaker and surrounding context against independent evidence. A signal about how content was made does not establish that its claims are accurate.
This distinction matters whether you are reviewing a realistic video, a polished image, an audio recording or a confident-sounding written post. Realism is not proof of authenticity, and evidence of AI involvement is not proof that a claim is false.
AI can also be used only for part of a work. A photograph might be genuine but have an AI-edited background; a human-written article might contain an automatically generated illustration; a recorded interview might be real but have synthetic captions. A binary label such as “AI” may not describe the extent or purpose of that involvement. Look for the underlying explanation when one is available.

How should I check whether a picture, video, voice clip or text used AI?
Start with the original file or earliest version you can find. Check for a label and supported provenance signals, and interpret any detector result narrowly: it reports only what that detector is designed to recognize.
- Find the earliest available version. A screenshot, edited copy or repost may no longer carry information that was present in the original. Keep the file or post you checked, and note where and when you found it.
- Look for an explicit disclosure. A publisher or platform label can tell you how that source classifies the material. Record who applied it and what it says; a label is not itself a fact-check.
- Inspect available provenance information. Use a tool that explicitly supports the kind of file and signal you have. If it reports credentials or an issuer, record those details and what history the tool actually displays.
- Use a detector only within its stated coverage. OpenAI says its checks look for supported OpenAI provenance signals; they are not general-purpose tests for content from every AI system. Microsoft likewise limits its provenance detector to supported Microsoft signals. A result that finds no supported signal does not show that a person made the content.
- Check the claim separately. For an important assertion, seek independent primary evidence or credible independent reporting. Confirm the date, location, speaker and context before deciding what the content establishes.
Do not turn a tool’s result into a broader conclusion than it supports. “This check found a signal associated with an identified issuer” is narrower and more useful than “This is definitely AI.” Likewise, “No supported signal was found” is not equivalent to “This is authentic.”

A short record makes your conclusion reproducible and prevents a changing post from being mistaken for the version you actually examined. Save the original file when lawful and practical, or preserve the earliest post’s URL and a screenshot of its label. Note the account or organization that published it, the date and time you accessed it, and whether the item was a repost, crop, screen recording or conversion.
For each tool, write down the tool’s name, the file type it supports, the issuer it identifies, the signal it found and the exact wording of the result. Distinguish “credential present,” “watermark detected” and “no supported signal found”; these are different observations. If a tool displays an edit history, record only the events it actually lists rather than inferring undocumented steps. This record lets a second reviewer see both the evidence and the limits.
Which signals can help identify AI involvement?
Different signals answer different questions. Provenance may describe origin or edit history; a watermark may provide a supported technical signal; a label communicates a publisher’s or platform’s classification. None necessarily verifies a post’s factual claims.
| Approach | What it may tell you | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Content Credentials or other provenance metadata | When present and preserved, it may provide signed information about origin or edit history. | Metadata can be lost during ordinary transformations, and provenance does not establish factual truth. |
| Embedded watermark | It may provide a signal supported by a particular provider or system, including in some cases after metadata has been removed. | Coverage depends on the provider and system. A negative result is not universal evidence that AI was not used. |
| AI label or context annotation | It shows how a publisher or platform classifies or contextualizes the content. | A classification or annotation is not the same as independent verification of the claims. |
| Independent claim verification | It can help establish whether a specific assertion is supported by records or credible reporting. | It does not, by itself, reveal whether AI was used to create the content. |
Ofcom discusses watermarking, provenance metadata, AI labels and context annotations as distinct attribution measures. In its 2025 reporting, Ofcom said 85% of adults supported online platforms attaching AI labels to content, while 34% had ever seen an AI label. Those figures describe Ofcom’s reported research; they should not be treated as measurements of every country or as a current global estimate.

How do provenance, watermarks and labels differ in practice?
Provenance and Content Credentials can attach signed information about an asset’s origin and subsequent edits. When intact, they may help you understand which organization or application handled a file and what changes were recorded. They are evidence about origin and history, not a guarantee that the recorded creator acted honestly or that the resulting content is accurate.

Embedded watermarks are signals placed in the media or its representation by a particular provider. They may survive some operations that strip ordinary metadata, but only if the detector knows that provider’s watermark and the transformation has not defeated it. A negative result from one provider’s detector says nothing conclusive about systems it does not support.
Labels and context annotations are communications to viewers. A platform may label an item as AI-generated, altered or lacking context; a publisher may disclose that it used an AI tool. These notices are valuable transparency signals, but they are classifications, not independent findings about whether an event occurred.
Recommended Free Tools
Independent verification addresses a different problem: whether the assertion is supported. A government record, court filing, original transcript, contemporaneous image from a known location or independently reported account may bear on the claim. None of those sources necessarily tells you whether AI assisted in producing the post.
Can visual oddities or detector scores prove that something is AI-generated?
No. A visual or audio oddity can be a reason to investigate, but it is not a reliable forensic test on its own. A detector score is limited to the detector’s method and supported content; neither realism nor apparent mistakes can settle authorship by themselves.
There is no validated universal checklist of visual artifacts that proves an image or video was generated by AI. The same caution applies when judging audio or text by appearance, polish or style: a human can produce unusual material, and generated material may look or sound convincing. Treat an anomaly as a prompt to seek better evidence, not as a verdict.
Ask what was actually observed. Was there a disclosure? Did a supported tool find a signal, and which issuer did it identify? Is there a provenance record that describes an origin or edit? If the only basis is that a post looks strange or a detector returned a score, the evidence remains limited.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For images and video, inspect the surrounding post as well as the pixels. An implausible date, mismatched location, recycled caption or account that appeared only recently may justify further checking, but these are contextual warning signs rather than proof of synthetic media. For audio, a clean waveform or an unusual cadence is not enough to establish cloning. For text, repetitive phrasing or a polished style can occur in human writing and should not be treated as a reliable authorship test.
Why might provenance or watermark information be missing?
Signals may disappear when content is screenshotted, edited, converted or shared. Their absence therefore does not establish that a file is original, human-made or authentic.

Provenance is useful when it is available and intact, but it is not a complete record of everything that happened to a file. The Office of Research Integrity cautions that the absence of credentials or watermarks does not prove authenticity. A repost without metadata may simply have lost information during handling; it may also have never carried the particular signal your tool checks for.
Use a negative result precisely: say that the tool did not find the signal it supports in the file you provided. Do not translate that into a claim about every provider, every generation method or the file’s truthfulness.
The same caution applies to a cropped video, a screen recording of a video call or a photograph downloaded from a social platform. Each transformation can break the chain between the current copy and the file originally created. If possible, locate an earlier upload, ask the publisher for the original, and compare versions rather than treating the most accessible copy as definitive.
Does provenance prove that a post is true?
No. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) states: “Provenance information alone cannot tell you whether the digital content is true, accurate or factual.” Provenance can still be useful evidence about origin and history. For example, it may show that a named application exported a file or that an identified editor made a recorded change. It does not show that a depicted event happened as described, that a quoted speaker meant what the caption claims, or that a numerical claim is correct.
Use provenance and fact-checking together, not interchangeably. An intact credential may increase confidence about who handled a file while leaving the central assertion unresolved. Conversely, strong independent evidence may establish that an event occurred even when the circulating copy has no metadata.
How do I verify a claim in a viral post?
Check the assertion independently of the media’s apparent origin. Identify exactly what is being claimed, then look for evidence that addresses the same person, event, place and date—not just a similar headline or an isolated image.

- Write down the specific assertion. Separate a factual claim from commentary, prediction or opinion. If a post bundles several assertions, check each one separately.
- Identify who is making the claim and when. Note the named speaker or organization, the publication date and the event or time period the post refers to.
- Check location and context. Ask whether the material is being presented as current, local or complete, and whether the available evidence supports that framing.
- Seek independent evidence. Prefer primary records where they directly address the assertion; otherwise look for credible reporting that independently corroborates it. A second repost of the same unsourced claim is not independent corroboration.
- Compare what the evidence says with what the post says. A source may confirm only part of a claim, describe a different date or location, or leave key details unresolved.
- Keep the conclusion proportional. State what is supported and what is not established. A provenance signal can inform the origin question, but it cannot substitute for evidence about the claim.
For a photograph, search for the earliest known publication and compare the caption, crop and date. For a video, establish whether the footage shows the claimed event, rather than merely a similar scene. For an audio clip, look for a complete recording, transcript or contemporaneous statement from the speaker. For text, trace statistics and quotations to the original report or document. These steps do not require you to decide authorship first; the claim may be checked even when the media’s production history remains uncertain.
This is a practical way to organize a check, not a claim that one formal procedure can settle every disputed post. For consequential claims, the key is to verify the relevant facts independently rather than relying on a detector, an apparently authoritative label or the clip alone.

What do EU AI transparency rules require, and when?
As of 25 October 2026, the European Commission says Article 50 transparency obligations under the EU AI Act apply from 2 August 2026. The obligations have specific scope and exceptions, so this summary is not legal advice and does not mean that every AI-generated post everywhere must carry the same label.
The Commission summarizes provider duties that include designing interactive systems to inform users and adding machine-readable marks for AI-generated or manipulated content. It also describes deployer disclosure duties in specified cases, including certain deepfakes and certain AI-generated public-interest publications made without human review or editorial control. Whether a particular case is covered depends on the Act’s scope and applicable exceptions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Commission describes its Code of Practice as a voluntary compliance aid for providers and deployers. The code is not the same thing as the underlying Article 50 requirements, which the Commission describes as legal obligations. For a specific compliance decision, consult the applicable legal text and authoritative guidance rather than treating a label as a complete account of legal status.
These rules also illustrate why a label should be interpreted carefully. A machine-readable mark may help systems identify content, while a human-facing disclosure helps viewers understand how it was produced. Neither format necessarily explains whether the content is satirical, selectively edited or factually correct. Legal coverage, platform practice and the evidentiary value of a signal are separate questions.
What should I conclude when a check is inconclusive?
Say that the available check did not establish whether AI was involved, and keep the content’s factual claims open to separate verification. Inconclusive is a meaningful result: it avoids pretending that missing signals prove human authorship or that a detector can cover systems beyond its stated support.
When the claim could affect someone’s safety, reputation or decisions, be especially careful not to treat automated output as a final judgment. OpenAI’s documentation advises pairing automated decisions with human review in high-stakes workflows. Record the original material, the tool used, its stated coverage and its result so that another reviewer can understand the limits of the assessment.
If you must publish while uncertainty remains, describe it plainly: identify the allegation, state what has and has not been verified, and avoid an unqualified headline. Update the item if a source, label or original file later changes the assessment. This approach is more accurate than forcing a binary “real” or “fake” verdict when the evidence supports neither.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a detector result be used as the only evidence in a school or workplace investigation?
That is risky: a detector only reports on the signals and content it supports, and a negative result does not establish human authorship. OpenAI advises human review alongside automated decisions in high-stakes workflows; the result should be treated as one limited piece of evidence, not a standalone finding.
Best Value
Should I repost a clip while I am still checking whether it is real?
If the claim could cause harm, avoid presenting an unverified clip as fact while you investigate. If you need to discuss it, distinguish clearly between what the post alleges and what independent evidence has established.
Do EU AI Act labeling rules apply to every post made with AI?
No blanket conclusion follows from the Commission’s summary: Article 50 duties have defined scope, specific covered cases and applicable exceptions. Whether a particular provider or deployer has a disclosure duty depends on the circumstances and the Act’s requirements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If a file has Content Credentials, can I trust the claim in it?
No. Credentials may provide evidence about origin or editing history, but C2PA says provenance information alone cannot establish that digital content is true, accurate or factual. Verify the claim, date, location and context separately.
What does “no watermark detected” mean?
It means only that the particular tool did not find the watermark or supported signal it checks for in that file. Editing, conversion, screenshots and reposting can remove signals, and the tool may not cover the provider that created the content.
Are AI labels and provenance the same thing?
No. A label or context annotation communicates how a platform or publisher classifies content. Provenance can provide signed information about origin or edits when preserved. Both can help with attribution, but neither is a substitute for fact-checking.
Can I tell from writing style whether text was generated by AI?
Style can prompt closer review but is not a reliable authorship test. Human writing can be formulaic, and generated text can be edited to sound personal. Check disclosures or supported provenance where available, then verify quotations, statistics, dates and other claims independently.
What is the safest wording when the evidence is mixed?
State exactly what was observed: for example, that a supported tool found a signal from an identified issuer, or that no supported signal was found. Explain what remains unverified and avoid calling the content definitely human-made, definitely AI-generated or factually true without stronger evidence.
The Bottom Line
Check origin and truth separately. Use the earliest file, explicit labels and supported provenance or watermark tools, but treat their results as limited signals. Because metadata can disappear and provenance cannot prove factual accuracy, verify consequential claims against independent evidence and report uncertainty plainly.
