To see who is talking in a PS5 party, turn on Display Names in the Display Who’s Speaking menu on the Control Center’s Voice Chat card. You must already be in a PlayStation party, and your console needs system software version 26.06-14.00.00 or later. The feature is an on-screen party-chat overlay—not a headset setting—and you can choose its screen position.
What does Display Who’s Speaking do?
Display Who’s Speaking adds the name of the person currently talking to your screen during a PlayStation party voice chat. Sony Interactive Entertainment introduced the feature in PS5 system software version 26.06-14.00.00, whose notes say: “You can now see who’s speaking while you’re in a voice chat.”

The overlay is useful when several people are talking at once, when a new player joins a long-running party, or when you cannot tell whose microphone is picking up keyboard, controller, television, or background noise. Instead of guessing from several voices, you can match the active name to the person listed on the Voice Chat card. That is especially helpful in a large party, where press reports say the overlay can be used with as many as 16 players.
This is a software overlay, not a headset feature. You do not need a PULSE headset, a USB microphone, or any other accessory to enable it. A DualSense controller’s built-in microphone is enough to participate in voice chat. A headset can improve the sound you send and receive, but changing hardware does not switch the name display on or off.

Sony’s public release notes identify version 26.06-14.00.00 as the update that added speaker identification. Engadget and AUTOMATON date that update to September 16, 2026. Sony’s notes page listed 26.07-14.20.00 as the latest build on October 29, 2026; that later release contains message and usability changes, while the speaker feature remains part of the earlier 26.06-14.00.00 feature set.
The indicator is intended for voice chat accessed through the PS5 Control Center’s Voice Chat card. It does not replace a game’s own speaker indicators, and it does not automatically add a label to every voice-chat service on the console.

What do you need before turning it on?
Check these prerequisites first. The most common reason the option is missing is looking for it before joining a party.
- A PlayStation party: Create or join one so the Control Center has a Voice Chat card. A cold home screen with no active party does not expose the Display Who’s Speaking menu.
- Compatible system software: The feature is included in version 26.06-14.00.00 and later. Sony’s system software notes listed version 26.07-14.20.00 as the latest build on October 29, 2026.
- A supported PS5 console: The feature is not described as PS5 Pro-only. It works on the regular PS5 and PS5 Pro when they meet the software requirement.
- No specific headset: A DualSense controller’s built-in microphone can be used for voice chat. A headset may change how your voice sounds or how you hear the party, but it is not required for the name overlay.
The feature is global in Sony’s PS5 system software notes. Menu wording can vary with your system language. For example, Sony’s Japanese notes use その他 for More, 発言者の名前を表示 for Display Who’s Speaking, 名前を表示 for Display Names, and 位置 for Position.
How do you turn on Display Names?
Join a party, open its Voice Chat card in the Control Center, and enable Display Names. The setting is on the Voice Chat card—not under Settings > Sound.
- Check for a system update if needed. If the menu item is missing, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Install an available update and check that the console is on version 26.06-14.00.00 or later. If your console is already on 26.07-14.20.00 or a newer build, it meets this requirement.
- Create or join a party. Press the PS button to open the Control Center. Select Game Base > Parties > Start Party, then choose an open or closed party, or join an existing one. An open party can be joined by eligible friends or other players according to your privacy settings; a closed party limits access to invited participants.
- Open the Voice Chat card. While in the party, press the PS button to bring up the Control Center and select the party’s Voice Chat card. If you see separate game-chat and party-chat controls, make sure you are working with the party card.
- Open the speaker indicator menu. Select the three-dot More menu, then choose Display Who’s Speaking.
- Enable the names. Turn on Display Names. When a party member speaks through that party chat, their name appears on screen.
Sony’s instructions describe the same route: open the Voice Chat card in the Control Center, select More > Display Who’s Speaking, and turn on Display Names. Display Names is off by default, so completing the update alone does not activate the overlay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do you move or hide the speaker name?
Use Position in the same Display Who’s Speaking menu to choose where the indicator appears. Sony specifically documents Position as the control for selecting the on-screen location. To hide the indicator, return to that menu and turn off Display Names.
Move it away from important game information
Choose a position that leaves the mini-map, health bar, subtitles, objective tracker, and other on-screen information visible. Engadget’s screenshot caption shows the setting at Top Left, but Sony’s system software notes do not publish a complete list of position choices. Treat Top Left as an example rather than a guaranteed complete menu list, and use the choices actually shown on your console.

Position changes are useful when different games place important information in different corners. A top-left indicator may be harmless in one game but cover a map or quest objective in another. If a game’s own HUD changes during a match, revisit Position from the Control Center rather than changing the game’s display settings.
Know what you can customize
The documented customization is the position and whether names are displayed. Engadget reports no controls for changing the overlay’s transparency or size. You cannot make the name panel semi-transparent, enlarge the lettering, or set a custom color through the documented menu.

Xbox’s party overlay has offered position and transparency controls since an announcement in May 2017. On PS5, the available control is Position, with no Sony-documented transparency or size setting.
Does it work in game chat, Discord, or on PS5 Pro?
The PS5’s native indicator is documented for party voice chat opened through the Control Center. Support for other chat systems is less clearly established, so use the distinction below when troubleshooting.
PlayStation party chat
This is the supported, documented use: join a PlayStation party and enable the overlay from its Voice Chat card. The active speaker’s name appears while that person is talking. Press reports describe parties of as many as 16 players with this overlay. That is an Engadget figure from 2026, not a party-cap number stated in the cited Sony release notes.
Voice chat built into a game
The native PlayStation overlay does not replace an in-game voice-chat HUD. Engadget says the feature does not work with voice chat built into games, although individual games may offer their own speaker-display options. If you are using a game’s chat rather than party chat, check that game’s audio, accessibility, social, or voice-chat settings for a speaker list or talking indicator.
Some games route party members and in-game teammates through different channels. Switching from party chat to game chat in the Control Center can therefore make the PS5 indicator seem to disappear even though Display Names is still enabled. Return to the party’s Voice Chat card and confirm which channel you are using.
Discord voice chat
Sony’s software notes do not document whether Display Who’s Speaking applies to Discord voice chat. AUTOMATON reports that Discord on PS5 already showed the names and icons of people speaking, and describes Sony’s update as bringing a similar experience to standard PlayStation voice chat. Engadget and TugaTech have reported players using the same indicator with Discord, but that behavior is player-reported rather than confirmed in Sony’s notes.

If you use Discord, treat its names-and-icons display as a Discord behavior rather than a guaranteed extension of the PS5 party setting. If it is absent, check Discord’s own voice overlay behavior and account connection instead of assuming the PS5 party toggle is defective.
PS5 and PS5 Pro
The speaker indicator is not described as a PS5 Pro-only feature. The same software update also made Enhance PSSR Image Quality a default setting, but Sony identifies PSSR as PS5 Pro-only. That separate graphics change does not make the speaker overlay exclusive to the Pro console.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What can you do if a party member is too loud?
Once the overlay identifies the person whose microphone is too loud, adjust that person’s party volume from the Voice Chat card instead of changing the game’s overall volume. This lets you keep the rest of the party and game audio at a comfortable level.
- Open the party’s Voice Chat card in the Control Center.
- Select the relevant player’s name.
- Choose Volume and adjust that player’s level.
Engadget reports that a per-player volume adjustment carries over to later chats with the same person. You should not need to repeat the correction every time that friend joins a party. This is different from changing the balance between all party voices and game audio, which affects the overall mix rather than one participant.
The same identification step can help diagnose a quiet microphone. If a name never appears while a person says they are talking, check whether they are muted, whether they joined the intended party, and whether their input device is receiving sound. The overlay identifies active party speech; it does not repair a muted controller or an incorrectly selected microphone.
Which microphone and chat settings are related—but separate?
These controls can help you be heard or balance audio, but none of them turns on the speaker-name overlay.
Use the DualSense microphone or a headset
The DualSense controller has a built-in microphone. Sony’s voice-chat troubleshooting guidance says its mute button mutes and unmutes the mic. A lit mute indicator or an accidentally pressed button can make a player appear silent even while the party is open.
Sony’s version 24.02-09.00.00 notes said a new AI machine-learning model improved mic input quality on DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers. It suppresses background noise from button presses and game audio, which can make controller-based party chat clearer without adding hardware.

A headset is optional, but the following products change capture and listening quality:
- PULSE 3D wireless headset: Sony describes two built-in microphones, optimally positioned for voice capture and enhanced by noise-cancelling technology. Its product page lists up to 12 hours of wireless play.
- PULSE Elite wireless headset: Sony describes microphone noise-rejection technology powered by artificial intelligence and trained to identify, isolate, and remove unwanted noise. It has a retractable boom microphone, PlayStation Link connectivity, up to 30 hours of battery life, and up to 2 hours of use from a 10-minute charge.
Those battery and microphone specifications are product features, not requirements for Display Who’s Speaking. The overlay still comes from PS5 system software.
Check your input and output devices
- Choose an output device: Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device. To hear chat through headphones, check Output to Headphones.
- Choose and level your microphone: Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone to select Input Device and use Adjust Microphone Level.
- Prevent an unintended hot mic: From the Control Center’s Mic card, set Microphone Status When Starting Voice Chat or Broadcast to Switch to Mute if you want the microphone to start muted. Sony says this option turns the mic off automatically when you start a voice chat or broadcast.
Balance party chat against game audio
In the Control Center, open Game Base, select the party, and use the voice-chat card’s drop-down and slider to balance chat with other audio. This global balance is separate from selecting one player and changing that person’s Volume.
For headphones, Sony’s Audio Focus option is under Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus. Sony says it can make party-chat voices clearer. Audio Focus was added in system software version 25.03-11.20.00. It can be useful after you identify a speaker but still struggle to hear everyone over game effects.
For PULSE Explore, PULSE 3D, and PULSE Elite, EQ Presets are available from Control Center > Sound. EQ changes the headset’s sound profile; it does not alter who is labeled on screen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is Display Who’s Speaking missing?
Work through the checks in order: the option depends on being in a party and running a recent enough system software version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- You are not in a party: Join or start one first. The option is accessed from the party’s Voice Chat card, not from the home screen on its own.
- The console software is older than 26.06-14.00.00: Use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software, install an available update, and check the menu again.
- You are looking in Sound settings: The overlay is on the Control Center’s Voice Chat card under More > Display Who’s Speaking.
- Display Names is still off: Opening the menu does not enable the feature by itself. Turn on the Display Names switch, then return to the game.
- You are using a game’s built-in chat: The PS5 party overlay does not supply that game’s speaker HUD. Look for an in-game voice-chat or speaker-display setting.
- You are using Discord: Sony does not document the PS5 toggle for Discord. Check Discord’s own interface and connection status.
- The speaker is not identified as expected: Confirm that you are in the intended party voice chat and that the other player is speaking through it. Check the relevant microphone’s mute state and input device if a participant cannot be heard.
- The overlay covers the HUD: Open More > Display Who’s Speaking > Position and select another location. Sony does not document a size or transparency control, so positioning is the available workaround.
Some players reportedly saw the setting before its public release notes appeared in September 2026, while others did not see it or later lost access. Engadget reported access as early as November 2025, but Sony did not explain how that earlier availability was controlled. The September 16 update marks the feature’s official inclusion in the public release notes, not necessarily the first time any player could use it.
How is the PS5 overlay different from other ways to identify speakers?
The native PS5 option is the simplest choice when everyone is in a PlayStation party: it is built into the Control Center, labels the active speaker by name, and lets you choose a position. Its limits are equally clear: it is not a universal voice-chat HUD, it has no documented transparency or size controls, and it depends on current system software.

Discord on PS5 may show names and icons through Discord’s own experience, but Sony does not promise that Display Who’s Speaking controls it. In-game voice chat is controlled by each game, so one title may provide a speaker list while another provides no visual identification. If your group frequently switches between these services, check the active channel before troubleshooting the overlay.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Japanese name for Display Who’s Speaking?
In Sony’s Japanese system software notes, the menu path uses その他 (More) and 発言者の名前を表示 (Display Who’s Speaking), followed by 名前を表示 (Display Names). The position control is labeled 位置.
Did PS5 speaker identification first become available in September 2026?
Not necessarily. Engadget reported that some players had access as early as November 2025, but Sony did not explain how that earlier availability was assigned. September 16, 2026 is the date press reports give for the update that officially included the feature in public release notes.
Can I make the speaker indicator transparent?
Engadget reports that the PS5 overlay has no transparency or size controls. Sony’s published notes identify a position setting but do not enumerate all available positions.
Do I need a PULSE headset to show speaker names?
No. Display Who’s Speaking is a PS5 software overlay. A DualSense controller’s built-in microphone is sufficient for party chat; PULSE 3D and PULSE Elite are optional upgrades for voice capture and listening.
Why can’t I find Display Who’s Speaking in Settings > Sound?
It is not a Sound setting. Join a PlayStation party, open the Control Center’s Voice Chat card, select More, choose Display Who’s Speaking, and turn on Display Names.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does the overlay work with the PS5’s in-game voice chat?
No. Engadget reports that the native overlay does not work with voice chat built into games. Check the individual game for its own speaker indicator or voice-chat HUD.
Can I change one player’s volume after identifying them?
Yes. Select that player’s name on the Voice Chat card, choose Volume, and adjust it. Engadget reports that the per-player setting carries into later chats with the same person.
Is Display Who’s Speaking available on PS5 Pro?
Yes, it is not described as Pro-only. It is included by system software version 26.06-14.00.00 or later on PS5 hardware; the separate PSSR enhancement in that update is the Pro-specific feature.
What if a friend’s name does not appear while they talk?
Confirm that both of you are in the same PlayStation party rather than a game’s separate chat, check that the friend is not muted, and verify the selected microphone under Settings > Sound > Microphone. The overlay labels party speech; it cannot detect audio from a muted or disconnected input.
