You can use an AI agent to find and compare products without handing over your shopping-account password or permission to place orders. Keep the agent in an agent-assisted role: let it gather public product information, then open the merchant site yourself, sign in, and approve checkout and payment personally. Before using any agent, inspect its integrations and action permissions, turn on only what the task requires, and set approval gates for purchases or account changes. A virtual or tokenized payment credential can reduce exposure of your primary card number in a supported payment flow, but it does not stop an agent from accessing an account or submitting an order. The exact controls and availability differ by service and location.
Can I use an AI agent without connecting my shopping account?
Yes, if you limit the task to product discovery and comparison and keep the merchant session, checkout, and payment under your control. An agent may be able to search public listings, summarize specifications, compare prices you provide, or build a shortlist without any account connection. Do not assume that every service can browse every retailer anonymously; check the particular agent’s current settings and requirements.

In agent-delegated shopping, you authorize the agent to shop and pay, sometimes within rules such as a spending limit. Delegated shopping creates a larger consequence if the agent misunderstands your intent, follows malicious instructions on a webpage, or encounters a faulty listing, so it needs stronger guardrails and trust mechanisms.

These are models, not guarantees that every shopping service implements them identically. Treat the model as a decision about authority: the less authority you grant, the less an agent can do if it makes a mistake.

How do I start with the least authority?
Begin with a task that needs no sign-in. Give the agent a written specification and ask for research, not execution. For example, request a comparison of laptops under a stated budget, with battery-life, weight, warranty, and return-policy requirements, using public product pages. Ask it to return source links and a list of uncertainties instead of asking it to add an item to a cart.
- Define the boundary. State that the agent may search and compare only. Explicitly prohibit signing in, creating an account, adding a payment method, placing an order, changing subscriptions, or sending messages to a merchant.
- Use public information first. Provide product URLs or ask for public listings. If a page requires a login, open it yourself or omit it; do not weaken the boundary just to retrieve one detail.
- Move to your own browser session. Open the merchant site in a browser you control, check the product, seller, stock, shipping destination, return terms, and final price, and then complete checkout yourself.
- Copy only what is necessary. If the agent needs to evaluate a specification or policy, paste that text or a redacted screenshot rather than granting access to your mailbox, cloud drive, or shopping history.
This pattern is a practical application of least privilege: give the system the minimum data and capability required for the defined purpose. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security says strict adherence to least privilege is critical for agentic AI, while Australian Cyber Security Centre guidance says to turn on only features you understand and need.

Account access is controlled by the individual agent’s integrations and permission design, not by the label “AI agent.” Read the permission screen before starting a task and look for both read access and action authority. A tool that can read product pages is materially different from one that can act inside a browser, email account, wallet, or retailer account.
- Accounts: Identify every account the agent can reach, including retailer, marketplace, email, cloud-storage, password-manager, and identity-provider accounts. Disconnect any account unrelated to the shopping task.
- Apps and browser sessions: Check whether the agent can open tabs, reuse an existing signed-in session, install extensions, or invoke another application. A browser-control permission can be more consequential than a simple search permission.
- Data: Review whether it can read saved addresses, order history, loyalty identifiers, personal preferences, or email confirmations. Remove broad data scopes when a narrow, one-time input will do.
- Actions: Distinguish viewing a cart from changing quantities, applying a coupon, submitting an order, changing a shipping address, starting a return, or editing a subscription. Request approval for every consequential action.
- Credentials and duration: Prefer narrowly scoped, expiring credentials over a standing connection. An agent-service guide from the Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends minimum-necessary permissions, narrowly scoped entitlements, and credentials that expire.
- Monitoring: Look for an activity log, action preview, notifications, and a way to revoke access. If you cannot tell what the agent did, or cannot stop it quickly, do not connect an account for shopping.
Do not give an agent a shopping-account password simply because it asks for one. If a connection is offered, read the requested scopes and the service’s explanation first. A connection may expose more than checkout, such as past orders, saved addresses, or one-click payment settings.

How do I shop while keeping checkout and payment under my control?
Use this repeatable workflow whenever you want agent help but not delegated purchasing.
- Write a purchase brief. Include the exact product category, must-have specifications, maximum total cost, delivery location, acceptable sellers, and deal-breakers. State that the agent must not buy, sign in, or alter an account.
- Ask for a comparison, not a transaction. Request a shortlist with model numbers, current displayed prices, shipping estimates, warranty and return terms, and links to the product pages. Tell the agent to flag information it could not verify.
- Check the shortlist independently. Open each link yourself. Confirm that the seller is the one you intend, that the model number matches, and that taxes, shipping, recurring fees, and marketplace conditions have not changed.
- Sign in manually, if needed. Use your normal browser and authentication method. Do not paste a password, one-time code, recovery code, or session cookie into the agent’s chat or a prompt.
- Review the cart line by line. Verify quantity, variants, seller, delivery address, shipping speed, taxes, discounts, subscriptions, and the final amount. Remove optional warranties or recurring services you did not request.
- Approve the payment yourself. Enter or select the payment method in the merchant’s checkout and complete any bank, passkey, or multifactor confirmation. Keep the final “Place order” action in your own control.
- Save the confirmation. Check the order number, amount, delivery date, and cancellation or return deadline in the merchant interface. If you want the agent to summarize the confirmation, copy the relevant text with personal identifiers removed.
This workflow does not claim that every agent can perform the research without an account. It does ensure that, when the service supports public browsing, the agent does not receive the authority needed to complete the purchase.
Does a virtual or tokenized card solve the account-access problem?
No. Payment-credential protection and account authorization are separate controls. A virtual or tokenized credential can reduce exposure of your primary card number when a supported payment design substitutes a limited token for the underlying account number. It does not prevent an agent that already has retailer access from viewing order information, changing an address, or submitting a purchase.
Visa has described an agent-specific token combined with passkey authentication as a payment-system design. That overview describes the technology, not general consumer availability. Whether a tokenized credential exists, what transactions it permits, and which merchants or regions support it must be checked in the payment service’s current settings.

- Use tokenization as an additional payment safeguard, not as permission to grant broad account access.
- Keep a human approval step for the amount, merchant, item, and delivery details.
- Check whether a token is single-use, merchant-specific, spend-limited, or revocable before relying on it.
- Remember that a token does not hide your shipping address, order history, or other account data from an authorized agent.
How do I stop an AI agent from placing an order?
Prevent the capability before the task begins. In the agent’s settings, disable checkout, purchase, wallet, and browser-action permissions when you only need research. If the service offers approval gates, require confirmation immediately before every order and before changes to addresses, subscriptions, saved payment methods, returns, or cancellations.
Use narrow constraints when delegation is unavoidable. A spending ceiling, approved merchant list, one-time task, product-category restriction, and expiration time reduce the possible impact, but they do not guarantee that the agent will interpret a product page or instruction correctly. The Canadian guidance emphasizes limiting resources and timeframes, while Australian guidance recommends human oversight and regular review.

- Use the agent’s revoke or disconnect control and remove its access in the retailer’s account-security or connected-apps page.
- Review active sessions, recent orders, saved addresses, payment methods, subscriptions, and returns for changes you did not make.
- Change the shopping-account password from a trusted device and invalidate other sessions if the service provides that option. Do not reuse the old password elsewhere.
- Contact the merchant and payment provider promptly about an unrecognized order or payment. Follow their dispute and account-recovery process.
- Re-enable access only after you understand the requested scopes and can set a human approval requirement.
What happens if a product page tries to manipulate the agent?
Web content is untrusted input. A listing, review, advertisement, or embedded document can contain instructions designed to make an agent reveal data, follow a different link, or take an action unrelated to your request. Australian cyber guidance explains that prompt injection cannot be reliably solved inside the model alone; system controls must also limit the resources and actions the agent can reach.
Reduce the impact with layered controls:
- Keep browsing and comparison separate from account actions and payment.
- Do not let page text override your purchase brief or approval rule.
- Require the agent to show the exact action and destination before it opens a login page, sends data, or changes a cart.
- Reject instructions asking for passwords, one-time codes, recovery keys, or unrelated file access.
- Prefer a fresh, limited browser context for research rather than a session already signed in to several services.
- Review the activity log after the task and disconnect temporary integrations.
Least privilege limits the damage from a mistake or manipulation; it is not a guarantee that the agent will behave as intended.

How should I handle personal data and email confirmations?
Give the agent only data needed for the defined shopping decision. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office frames this as purpose limitation and data minimisation: access to personal information should be limited to what is necessary for the stated purpose, with human permission used as a possible control.
That means you can provide a delivery country, approximate budget, or preferred dimensions without exposing a full address, order history, or mailbox. Avoid connecting email merely to find a shipping estimate. If an agent needs to read a confirmation, forward or paste a redacted message after purchase, removing order numbers, addresses, phone numbers, and payment details that are not relevant to the summary.
How often should I review an agent’s access?
Review permissions whenever the agent, retailer integration, browser extension, or payment flow changes, and after each one-time shopping task. Settings that were appropriate for product research may become excessive after a service adds browser control, memory, or purchasing features.
- Check connected accounts and revoke inactive integrations.
- Confirm that approval prompts still appear before checkout and account changes.
- Look for newly requested data scopes or longer-lived credentials.
- Examine recent activity for searches, logins, cart edits, and orders.
- Delete stored shopping briefs, addresses, and receipts from the agent when they are no longer needed.
Availability and labels change across services and geographies, so repeat the review rather than relying on a setup guide written for an earlier version.
Which shopping approach is right for my risk tolerance?
Choose authority based on the consequence of an error, not on how convenient the feature sounds.

If the service cannot separate these capabilities, choose the lower-authority option or do the task manually. Convenience is not a reason to grant a password, a permanent connection, or unrestricted browser control.

Can an AI agent compare prices without seeing my order history?
Often, public product pages and links you provide are enough for a comparison, but capabilities differ by service. Do not connect a retailer or email account unless its permission screen shows that order history is excluded or provides a separate read scope.
What should I do if I accidentally shared a shopping password with an agent?
Change the password immediately from a trusted device, invalidate active sessions, and remove the agent from the account’s connected-app list. Check orders, addresses, payment methods, and subscriptions, then contact the merchant or payment provider about anything you do not recognize.
Can a spending limit make delegated shopping safe?
A limit reduces the size of a possible mistake but cannot ensure the agent selected the right seller, product variant, or recurring service. Pair limits with an expiration time, an approved-merchant or category rule, transaction previews, and human approval whenever the service supports them.
Are tokenized payment credentials available for every online store?
No. Support depends on the payment provider, merchant, agent design, and geography. A payment-network description of tokenization does not establish that a particular consumer service or store offers the flow, so verify the current checkout and account settings.
