To sync Xbox game progress between devices, sign in to the same Xbox profile, connect both devices to the internet, and launch the same supported game. Let the game finish checking and syncing its save before you play. Xbox compares the local save with the cloud copy; depending on which is newer, it uploads, downloads, does nothing, or asks you to choose between conflicting versions.
Cloud saves are not a continuous, instant backup. An offline session stays on that device until it can sync, and cross-device saves work only when the game and its save system support the devices you want to use.

What do you need to sync Xbox saves between devices?
You need the same Xbox profile on each device, an internet connection for the upload and download, and a game that supports Xbox connected storage on the platforms involved. The game must also use a compatible save system across those platforms; owning or launching a game on two devices does not by itself guarantee that its progress will roam between them.
- Same profile: Each profile has its own saves. Signing into a different account can make a save appear to be missing.
- Same supported game: Check whether the particular console and PC versions share Xbox cloud saves. Some games have separate versions or use a different save system.
- Internet access: The device with the newest local progress needs a connection to upload it, and the destination device needs a connection to download it.
- One active session: Close the game on other devices before trying again. Two devices competing for the same save session can interrupt synchronization.
Xbox connected storage keeps title data locally and can sync it to the cloud when the game is connected. After synchronization, the data can be available on another device that runs the title. Microsoft’s Connected Storage Overview describes the result this way: saved data is available on another device running the title after synchronization. This is a supported save flow, not a promise that every game, edition, or platform combination is compatible.

Before you move a save, check these details
- Identify the device that has the progress you actually want. The newest device is not always the right one if you intentionally went back to an earlier checkpoint.
- Write down the game edition and platform. A console edition, Windows edition, enhanced edition, and streaming version may not use identical save files.
- Make sure the game is fully updated if it requires an update before it can connect to Xbox services.
- Close the title on other consoles, PCs, or handhelds. A suspended game can still hold an active save session.
- Keep the device powered and connected long enough for the launch check and the session-end upload to complete.
How do I set up Xbox cloud saves?
There is generally no separate save-file transfer to configure. Sign in, get online, launch the game, and give its save provider time to synchronize before continuing.
- Sign in to the same Xbox/Microsoft profile on the source and destination devices. Confirm the account before launching the game.
- Connect the source device to the internet and make sure it can reach Xbox services. If your latest progress was played offline, start with that original device.
- Launch the game while online. Wait at the title screen or wherever the game displays a syncing message. Do not assume the save is ready just because the game has opened.
- Let the session finish and close or suspend the game while connected. Microsoft documents an upload attempt at session end when a connection is available.
- On the destination device, sign into the same profile and launch the same supported game. Wait for the cloud copy to download or for any conflict prompt to appear before playing.
- Verify the result in the game. Check the last checkpoint, chapter, level, or in-game timestamp rather than relying only on the console’s last-played date.
Microsoft’s Game Saves flow checks connectivity and save-session ownership, then compares local and cloud data. It may upload the local copy, download cloud data and update the local copy, take no action when the data matches, or ask you to resolve a conflict. The exact prompt and labels can vary by game and platform.

| Save state | Likely Xbox action | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Local save is newer | Upload the local Game Saves data | Keep the device online and allow the upload to finish before opening the game elsewhere. |
| Cloud save is newer | Download cloud data and update the local save | Wait for the download before starting a new game or making changes. |
| Local and cloud copies match | Take no action | Continue playing; no transfer is needed. |
| Both copies changed | Show a conflict-resolution prompt | Compare timestamps or progress descriptions and choose the version you intend to keep. |
Xbox does not merge two divergent play sessions into one combined save. Choosing a conflict option can overwrite the other copy, so first determine which checkpoint, character, or world contains the progress you want.
How do I sync Xbox saves to another console, PC, or handheld?
Use the same sequence on the source and destination: upload from the device with the progress you want, then launch the game online on the device where you want to continue. The device category alone does not determine compatibility; the specific game’s supported save implementation does.
| Device or situation | What to do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox console to another Xbox console | Connect the console with the newer save, launch and close the game online, then launch the game on the destination console and wait for sync. | Both consoles must use the same profile and the game must use Xbox cloud saves. |
| Xbox console to Windows PC, or PC to console | Use the same Xbox profile in the game’s Xbox sign-in flow and wait for its save synchronization at launch. | Do not assume that every PC edition shares saves with its console edition; verify support for the exact game and versions. |
| Supported handheld experience | Connect to the internet, sign into the same profile, and let the game complete its sync before continuing. | Game Save Sync Indicator availability on PC and handheld experiences depends on the rollout and where it is shown. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Start a supported title with the same profile and allow the Xbox service to load its available save. | Cloud-gaming title, device, and service availability can change; cloud play is not a substitute for confirming the game’s cross-platform save support. |
| Offline play | Continue with the local save if the game permits, then reconnect the original device and allow it to sync before opening the game elsewhere. | Changes made offline are not in the cloud until synchronization occurs. Another device may initially load older cloud progress. |
Xbox announced a Game Save Sync Indicator for PC and handheld experiences on January 21, 2026. When the indicator is present, use it to check whether the latest progress is synchronized; its presence should not be assumed on every device or game. The indicator is a status aid, not a replacement for using the same account and waiting for the game’s own save check.
Console, PC, handheld, and cloud-client differences
On an Xbox console, a title may resume from a suspended state instead of performing a full launch check. If you are moving to another device, quit the game and relaunch it while online so the save provider gets a clear synchronization opportunity. On Windows, confirm that the Xbox app and the game itself are signed into the intended profile; a Windows account being correct does not guarantee that an in-game Xbox sign-in is correct.

Handheld experiences can expose the January 2026 sync indicator, but the exact location and wording depend on the device and rollout. A cloud-gaming client may load a save from the Xbox service without exposing local save-management controls. In all three cases, the practical test is the same: launch the supported title, wait for sync, and verify the in-game progress.
How often do Xbox cloud saves sync?
For games using supported Game Saves APIs, Microsoft documents synchronization attempts about every 30 minutes during gameplay and an upload attempt when a session ends if connectivity is available. The interval is not a guarantee that every game saves to the cloud every 30 minutes: games can implement the save flow differently, and loss of connection, shutdown, or a suspended session can delay an upload.
That makes the practical rule simple: when moving devices, connect the device containing your latest progress, let the game finish, and exit or suspend it while online before opening the game elsewhere. If you played offline, do not treat the other device’s older cloud copy as proof that the local progress has been backed up.

The roughly 30-minute figure is a documented attempt interval for supported APIs, not a countdown you can watch or manually trigger. A game can save locally before that interval, while the network upload waits until connectivity is restored. Likewise, closing a game immediately after losing the network may leave the cloud copy unchanged.

First identify which device has the progress you want to keep. Then use that device to sync before opening or changing the save on another device. Avoid deleting save data until you know whether you are removing only a local copy or the cloud copy too.
The other device shows older progress
- Return to the device where you last played the game and confirm it has the intended profile.
- Reconnect that device to the internet, launch the game if needed, and let it synchronize.
- Close the game cleanly while online so it gets an opportunity to upload at session end.
- Only after that, launch the game on the destination device and wait for the download to finish.
If the original device is still offline or the game session has not ended, the cloud may not yet contain its newest progress.
The game is stuck on “syncing data” or synchronization fails
- Check that the device is online and signed in to the same profile used on the other device.
- Close the game on other devices so only one device is using the save session, then retry.
- Allow the current sync attempt to finish rather than repeatedly launching the title on multiple devices.
- If the source device has unsynced progress, preserve that local copy and reconnect it before attempting a reset or deletion.
- Restart the game only after noting which device has the newest progress; repeatedly starting it on both devices can create additional changes.
Microsoft’s flow includes save-session ownership because two active devices can contend for the same session. A delay or failed attempt is not, by itself, evidence that the save has been erased.
A conflict prompt asks which save to keep
A conflict means both the local and cloud copies changed. Read the timestamps or progress descriptions in the prompt and select the version that contains the progress you want to preserve. Choosing one version can overwrite the other, so do not select based only on which device you are currently using.
If the descriptions are ambiguous, cancel or postpone the choice if the game allows it, return to each device, and record the visible checkpoint or play time. Do not launch both versions repeatedly while deciding; each new save can change the comparison.
The local save is stale but the cloud save is the one you want
Removing a stale local copy can make the game fetch the cloud version again, but use the game’s own saved-data controls and make sure the desired cloud copy exists first. Microsoft gives this exact procedure for Minecraft on Xbox consoles:
- Go to Home > My games & apps > See all > Minecraft.
- Press the Menu button, then choose Manage game > Saved data.
- Select the relevant profile and choose Delete from console—not an option that deletes the data everywhere.
- Launch Minecraft while online and let it synchronize from the cloud.
This path is specific to Minecraft. Other games can use different menu names or recovery options. Deleting a local console copy and deleting a cloud copy are different actions; the latter can destroy the version you hoped to restore.
You played offline and recent progress is not on the other device
Reconnect the original device first and give its local save a chance to upload. Do not start and close the same game on a second device before the original has synchronized: the second device may be working from an older cloud version, creating a conflict or making it harder to identify the intended save.

The game opens but starts a new save
Stop at the first save or profile screen. Confirm the Xbox profile shown in the game, then exit without overwriting the existing slot if possible. A different profile, edition, or disconnected session can make a valid cloud save look absent. Reconnect the device, relaunch, and wait for the synchronization check before creating new progress.
Can I play offline and upload my Xbox save later?
Often, a game can continue using its local Game Saves storage while offline, but the current session cannot upload or download cloud data until connectivity returns. Whether the game itself permits offline play depends on that title and its other service requirements.
When you reconnect, use the device that holds the offline progress first. Let the game synchronize and close it while online before launching it on another device. If both devices have changed since their last sync, Xbox may present a conflict rather than silently combining the progress.
Do not use a second device to “test” the save while the first device still has offline changes. The second device can download the older cloud copy and then create a competing local state. Preserve the offline device until its upload has completed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I force an Xbox cloud-save sync?
There is no single universal “force sync” command in the documented flow. The reliable action is to connect the device containing the save you want, launch the game and wait for its synchronization check, then end the session online; after that, launch the game on the destination device.
If a sync appears stuck, check the profile and connection, close the game on other devices, and retry. Deleting local data is a recovery action for a stale local copy—not a general way to force an upload—and should only be used when you have confirmed which copy you intend to preserve.
On supported PC and handheld experiences, the Game Save Sync Indicator announced by Xbox Wire on January 21, 2026, can show whether progress is synchronized. It may not be available on every title or device, so the absence of an indicator does not prove that saves are disabled.
Why might the same game not share progress between Xbox and PC?
Cloud storage only helps when the game supports the relevant Xbox save system on both platforms and the versions use compatible saves. A game can have distinct console and PC editions, or may not implement Xbox connected storage for one of them. Confirm support for the exact title and platform editions rather than inferring it from the game’s name, account sign-in, or availability on both devices.
Xbox Cloud Gaming uses the Xbox service layer, but the supported titles and devices can change. A game appearing in a cloud-gaming catalog does not establish that every locally installed edition shares a save with every console or PC version.

Also separate save data from installation and entitlement. Connected storage can roam a title’s saved data; it does not automatically install the game, move downloaded content, or guarantee that every setting and add-on is represented in the save. Check the game’s platform documentation when moving between editions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you avoid when syncing Xbox saves?
- Do not switch profiles: A save belongs to the profile namespace that created it.
- Do not launch both devices repeatedly: Concurrent sessions can contend for ownership and create conflicts.
- Do not delete cloud data to fix a local problem: Remove only a stale local copy when you have verified the cloud version is the one you want.
- Do not assume “last played” means “last uploaded”: Offline play, a lost connection, or a suspended session can leave newer data local.
- Do not assume every platform combination is supported: Verify the game’s exact versions and Xbox save implementation.
Can I use Xbox cloud saves as a backup?
Cloud synchronization provides roaming access to supported saved data, but it is not an instant, versioned backup system with unlimited historical restores. Uploads occur at documented synchronization points, including periodic attempts and session end when connected. A shutdown or network failure can leave the cloud copy behind the local one, and resolving a conflict can replace one version with another.
For that reason, treat the cloud copy as the current synchronized state, not as a guaranteed archive of every earlier checkpoint. Before deleting local data or accepting a conflict choice, verify which progress is present on the device and in the prompt.
Frequently asked questions
Do Xbox cloud saves use my Xbox account or my Microsoft account?
Use the Xbox profile associated with the Microsoft account you use to play; the relevant identity is the same profile on each device. If you have multiple profiles, progress saved under one will not appear merely because another profile uses the same console.
Can two people use the same Xbox cloud save at the same time?
The documented Game Saves flow tracks ownership of an active save session, so concurrent sessions can contend rather than merge their changes. For separate players, use separate profiles and verify the game supports separate save data for those profiles.
Will Xbox cloud saves transfer my game settings and downloadable content too?
The documented connected-storage behavior concerns a title’s saved data, not a guarantee that every setting, add-on, or installed game file transfers with it. Treat installations and entitlements separately, and check the individual game for what its save includes.
Does deleting a game from an Xbox console delete its cloud save?
Removing an installed game and deleting saved data are different operations. If a menu offers a choice to delete data from the console or everywhere, read it carefully: the Minecraft recovery path specifically uses “Delete from console” so the cloud copy can sync back.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How long should I wait for a save to sync?
Wait until the game’s syncing message, progress indicator, or launch check has completed, then close the game while online if you are uploading. There is no universal number of seconds; connection quality, save size, service response, and the game’s implementation affect the duration.
Can I restore an older cloud save?
The normal flow compares the current local and cloud copies; it does not promise a browsable history of every earlier version. If a conflict prompt offers an older or newer copy, read the descriptions carefully before choosing. Do not delete the cloud copy while trying to recover a local version.

Why does my save appear on one Xbox but not another?
The first checks are profile, title edition, and synchronization status. Return to the Xbox containing the intended progress, connect it, launch and close the game online, then retry on the other console. If the editions or save systems differ, the game may not support that transfer.

The Bottom Line
To move Xbox progress safely, use the same profile and supported game on both devices, bring the device with the desired progress online first, wait for synchronization, and close the game while connected. Offline progress remains local until it uploads, and conflicts require choosing one copy. Delete only a stale local save when restoring a verified cloud copy; deleting data everywhere can be destructive.
