Yes. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X runs Windows 11, so you install the normal Windows version of Steam, sign in, and download games just as you would on a desktop PC. The Xbox full-screen experience and Armoury Crate SE can remain installed alongside Steam, and both can surface your installed games. To carry progress between the Ally X and another PC, enable Steam Cloud globally and for each supported game, then let Steam finish syncing before you switch devices. If a title does not support Steam Cloud, you must copy its save files using the developer’s documented location. What do I need before installing Steam on the Ally X?
You need a completed Windows setup, a network connection, the Microsoft account used on the handheld, and the Steam account that owns the games. The 2025 ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X ships with Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD, Wi-Fi 6E, two USB-C ports with DisplayPort, a UHS-II microSD reader, and an 80Wh battery. Those specifications provide a conventional Windows PC environment, but they do not guarantee that every Steam game will run well or support every controller, launcher, or anti-cheat system.

- Complete Windows 11 setup and connect to Wi-Fi.

- Have your Steam credentials and any two-factor authentication method available.
- Keep enough free space for the game, updates, shader caches, and temporary installation files.

Windows also means you are not limited to one storefront. ASUS says the ROG Ally supports major launchers such as Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, the EA App, and GOG Galaxy, and downloaded games are automatically imported to the Armoury Crate SE Game Library. Xbox describes its Windows handheld experience similarly: you can install games from your preferred storefront and run ordinary Windows apps, including communication and streaming software.
How do I update the Ally X before installing Steam?
Install both Windows and ASUS updates first. Doing this reduces avoidable driver, firmware, controller, and storefront problems during the first game installation.

- Open Windows Settings, choose Windows Update, install every pending update, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Open Armoury Crate SE, go to Update Center, apply the available ASUS updates, and restart again if prompted.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi after the restart and confirm that Windows shows the correct date, time, and network connection.
- Plug in the charger if a firmware or large system update is pending; do not interrupt a firmware installation by shutting down the handheld.

How do I install Steam on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X?
Use the Xbox full-screen experience when Steam is listed there, or download the Windows client from Steam’s official site in Edge if it is not listed. Steam then installs and runs like any other Windows desktop application.

- Open My Apps, choose the PC storefront category, and select Steam if it appears.
- Follow the installer, accept the default installation location unless you have a specific reason to change it, and let Steam update itself.
- If Steam is not shown, switch to the Windows desktop, open Edge, and download the Windows Steam client from Steam’s official website. Run the installer, then return to the Xbox or Armoury Crate interface after installation.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns the games. Complete Steam Guard verification if requested.
Installing Steam does not transfer games automatically. Each title must be installed from your Steam Library, and a game purchased through another storefront still requires that storefront’s own client and license.
How do I install a Steam game on the Ally X?
Choose the game in Steam Library, select Install, and pick the internal SSD or a configured microSD library. Allow the download, shader processing, and first-run prerequisites to finish before judging launch performance.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Choose the game and press Install.
- In the destination dialog, select the internal SSD or the Steam library you created on a compatible microSD card.
- Review the required disk space and confirm the installation.
- Wait for the download to complete. Steam may then download shader data or install components such as Microsoft Visual C++ runtimes or DirectX files.
- Launch the game once from Steam. Complete its own account sign-in, graphics setup, and controller calibration if requested.
Launching once also gives the other interfaces a chance to detect the installation. The title should become discoverable in the Xbox aggregated library and/or Armoury Crate SE. If it is absent from Armoury Crate SE, open Manage Library and add the game or application manually. A missing shortcut is a library-indexing issue, not proof that the Steam installation failed.
Will Steam games appear in Xbox and Armoury Crate SE?
Usually, an installed Windows game can be surfaced by the Xbox library and Armoury Crate SE, but the launchers are separate applications and their indexing is not instantaneous. Start the game from Steam at least once, then refresh or manage the library if it does not appear.

Xbox full-screen experience
The Xbox interface can aggregate games from Windows storefronts while still leaving Steam responsible for ownership, updates, cloud synchronization, and launch-specific settings. Selecting a Steam game from an aggregated view may open Steam first.
Armoury Crate SE
Armoury Crate SE provides a controller-friendly game library and handheld controls. If automatic import misses a title, use Manage Library to add the executable or application manually. Keep the Steam shortcut available when a game requires Steam’s overlay, launch options, or cloud status.
Why a game may not be listed
- The game has not been launched after installation, so the library has not scanned it yet.
- The executable is inside a custom folder that the library is not monitoring.
- A secondary launcher owns the final executable and the shortcut points to the wrong file.
- The game was installed on a removable card that is not currently inserted or mounted.
How do I enable Steam Cloud for my games?
Turn on Steam Cloud globally, then verify the setting for every game you want to synchronize. Steam Cloud can store settings, save games, profile statistics, and other user-specific data, but the game’s developer decides which files are included.
Enable the global setting
- Open Steam and choose Steam in the top-left menu.
- Select Settings, then Cloud.
- Turn on Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications which support it.
Check an individual game
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Select Properties, then General.
- Confirm that the game’s Cloud Synchronization option is enabled.
A Steam Cloud logo on a game’s store page indicates that the title uses the service, not that every file is synchronized. One game may upload settings while excluding a particular save type. If the expected progress does not appear, check the game’s documentation for its supported save files and known limitations.

How do I move Steam saves from another PC to the Ally X?
For a game that supports Steam Cloud, close the game normally on the old PC, wait for Steam to finish uploading, then install and launch it on the Ally X while online. For a game without cloud support, copy the save files manually only after confirming the developer’s documented location and format.
Using Steam Cloud
- On the desktop PC, exit the game through its normal menu rather than forcing the process closed.
- Keep Steam online and wait until the game’s sync indicator shows that the upload has completed.
- On the Ally X, sign in to the same Steam account and install the same game.
- Before playing, allow Steam to download the cloud data. Start the game only after the client reports that synchronization is complete.
- After playing on the Ally X, exit normally and wait for the upload before returning to the desktop PC.
Copying a save for a game without Steam Cloud
Steam’s default Windows cloud-data directory is C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata, but a non-cloud game’s actual save can be elsewhere. Steam notes that developers may use a location such as C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games. Treat that path as an example, not a universal rule.

- Read the game’s support documentation to identify the exact save folder and whether the files are encrypted or tied to a user profile.
- Back up the destination folder on the Ally X before replacing anything.
- Exit Steam and the game on both computers so no process is rewriting the files during the copy.
- Copy the save files using a USB drive, local network transfer, or another method you trust.
- Place them in the matching folder on the Ally X, preserving the folder structure and file names.
- Launch the game offline first if the developer recommends that test, then make a new backup after confirming the progress appears.
Do not copy files into userdata merely because that folder exists; the correct location depends on the title. Some games also store settings, screenshots, mods, or profiles beside the save, so copying only one file can produce an incomplete migration.
What should I do when Steam Cloud shows a conflict?
Do not launch the game immediately. Compare the local and cloud timestamps, identify which version contains the progress you intend to keep, and select that version in Steam’s conflict dialog.
- Read the conflict window’s local and cloud dates and times.
- Consider where you last played and whether that session ended normally.
- Choose the newer file only when its timestamp matches the session you want; a newer timestamp can still represent an unwanted test or reset.
- If uncertain, cancel the launch, copy the local save folder to a separate backup location, and then resolve the prompt.
- Launch only after Steam confirms the selected version has synchronized.
Offline play postpones synchronization until Steam is online again. A game played on the Ally X without a connection can therefore create a conflict with a newer cloud version from another PC. If Steam reports that it cannot sync, fix the network or client problem before choosing Play; ignoring the warning can create conflicting files and lost progress.
How do I choose between the internal SSD and a microSD card?
The 1TB internal SSD is the simplest default for games where consistent loading and frequent updates matter. A compatible UHS-II microSD card expands capacity and makes a large library more portable, but removable storage adds another device and can vary in sustained performance.

ASUS specifies a UHS-II, backward-compatible microSD reader and says games may be installed on external storage. When choosing a card, check its capacity, sustained performance, compatibility, and the seller’s return policy. In Steam, create a library folder on the card through Settings and Storage, then select that library during installation.
How do I connect the Ally X to a monitor or TV?
Use either USB-C port for DisplayPort output and a dock that can deliver the power the handheld needs. ASUS recommends the ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 or another 130W-capable dock for a monitor, TV, keyboard, mouse, and charging arrangement.

- Connect the 130W-capable USB-C dock to the Ally X.
- Attach the dock’s power supply, then connect the monitor or TV with the appropriate DisplayPort or HDMI cable.
- Connect keyboard, mouse, Ethernet, or other peripherals to the dock.
- In Windows display settings, choose whether to duplicate, extend, or show the picture only on the external screen.
- In the game’s graphics settings, select a resolution and refresh rate that the display and the Ally X can sustain.
Check dock compatibility and power delivery for the exact model. A dock that provides video but insufficient power can leave the handheld charging slowly or discharging while gaming. DisplayPort capability on USB-C does not by itself guarantee that every cable, adapter, or television input will support the desired resolution and refresh rate.
What should I do if a Steam game will not launch?
Restart Steam and Windows, then verify the installation before performing more invasive changes. A launch failure can also come from a missing secondary launcher, unsupported anti-cheat configuration, controller requirements, or hardware settings rather than damaged files.
- Exit the game and Steam completely, restart Windows, and try again.
- Open Steam Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, and open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam after verification and launch the game from Steam once more.
- If the issue is a cloud error, resolve synchronization first instead of repeatedly launching the game.
- Confirm that any required secondary launcher is installed and signed in, and that the game’s anti-cheat policy allows the Ally X’s Windows environment.
- Check the game’s Windows requirements, controller support, and any required runtime or firmware update.
Steam notes that one or more local configuration files may fail verification normally. That result does not automatically mean the installation is corrupt; configuration files can be regenerated or intentionally differ from the publisher’s original files.

You can install Windows-compatible Steam games, but “entire library” is too broad a promise. Compatibility depends on each title’s Windows requirements, graphics workload, launcher dependencies, controller implementation, cloud-save coverage, and anti-cheat rules.

For a controller-first experience, add the title to Armoury Crate SE after Steam detects it, but keep Steam available for updates, cloud status, and launch options. A Steam Deck or another handheld can differ because its operating system and compatibility layer are different; the procedures here are specific to the Windows-based Ally X.
What is the safest routine when switching between the Ally X and a desktop?
Use a short handoff routine every time: finish the game normally, wait for Steam’s sync indicator, and only then put one device away or start the other.

- Keep Steam online until the cloud icon or sync message shows completion.
- On the next device, open Steam before launching the game and wait for any download or conflict prompt.
- Never choose Play while Steam is warning that it cannot synchronize unless you have deliberately backed up the saves and accepted the risk.
- For non-cloud games, maintain a dated manual backup before changing devices.
This routine prevents the most common cross-device mistake: creating two valid but different local saves and then allowing the wrong one to overwrite the other.

Does Steam Cloud work when the Ally X is offline?
No upload or download can occur while Steam is offline. You can play locally, but synchronization waits until the client reconnects, at which point Steam may present a conflict if another device changed the same files.
Can I use a microSD card formatted on another Windows PC?
It may work if Windows recognizes the file system and Steam can create or add a library folder, but back up the card first. Removing the card while Steam or a game is writing can corrupt the library, so always exit the game and use Windows’ safe-removal process.
Why does a game show cloud support but still lack my save?
The developer controls which files are included. The cloud feature may cover settings or profile data while excluding the save format you are looking for; consult that game’s support documentation and locate its local save folder before copying anything.
Will a dock make every game run at monitor resolution?
A dock only provides connections and power; it does not increase the Ally X’s graphics capability. Choose the external display’s resolution and refresh rate in Windows and the game, then adjust quality settings to maintain a playable frame rate.
