If the old iPad is unavailable, restore from an iCloud or computer backup instead. Keep both devices powered during migration; Apple says the time varies with the amount of data and network conditions.
Choose the transfer method that fits
| Method | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Start, direct transfer | Your old iPad is available and you want to move data device to device. | Both iPads are occupied until transfer finishes. Keep them close and connected to power; duration varies. Apple Quick Start instructions. |
| Quick Start, download from iCloud | You want to start using the new iPad while content downloads. | Apps and data download in the background. You need an appropriate iCloud backup and network access. Apple Quick Start instructions and Apple iCloud transfer guidance. |
| Restore from iCloud backup | The old iPad is not available, or you prefer restoring a backup. | Sign in with the Apple Account associated with the backup. If the new iPad has already been set up, erasing it is required for this restore route. Apple transfer guidance. |
| Restore from computer backup | You have a backup on a Mac or PC. | You need the computer and, for an encrypted backup, its password. An unencrypted backup does not transfer the Health and Activity data Apple identifies. Apple computer-backup instructions and Apple encrypted-backup guidance. |
For most people with the old iPad in hand, Quick Start is the simplest starting point. If you need to use the new iPad sooner, choosing an iCloud download can make it available while some content continues downloading. A school- or business-managed iPad may have different rules: Apple says devices enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business cannot use Quick Start to transfer data from the current device.

Prepare both iPads
- Keep the old iPad unlocked, connected to Wi-Fi, and with Bluetooth turned on. Apple’s current Quick Start instructions say the current device needs iOS 11 or iPadOS 13 or later. Check Apple’s Quick Start requirements.
- Have the Apple Account password ready and make a backup of the old iPad before starting. People who have purchased a new iPad may be eligible for temporary iCloud storage, subject to Apple’s eligibility conditions. Apple’s temporary iCloud storage instructions.
- Choose a time when you can leave the old iPad unused. Check your existing cables and power adapters so both devices can remain powered; an extra accessory is not required if you already have suitable charging equipment.
- If the new iPad Pro is a cellular model, plan to activate or transfer its cellular service separately. Support depends on the carrier and plan. Apple’s eSIM transfer guidance.
Transfer directly with Quick Start
- Turn on the new iPad Pro and leave it at the Hello screen.
- Place the old iPad nearby. Unlock it, confirm that Wi-Fi is connected and Bluetooth is on, then follow the Quick Start prompt that appears.
- Continue on the new iPad. Enter the old iPad’s passcode if requested and complete the authentication and security prompts on screen.
- When offered a transfer choice, select direct transfer to move data from the old iPad, or choose the iCloud download option if you are restoring from an iCloud backup.
- For a direct transfer, keep both iPads near each other and plugged into power until the migration finishes. With an iCloud download, the new iPad can be used sooner, while apps and other content may continue downloading in the background. Apple does not give a universal completion time; it depends on network conditions and how much data is being moved. Apple Quick Start instructions.
If the iPads do not offer Quick Start, check that the old device is nearby, unlocked, and has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. For devices enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business, follow the organization’s setup instructions or use a backup method supported by the organization.

Restore from an iCloud backup if the old iPad is unavailable
- Start the new iPad at the Hello screen, connect it to Wi-Fi, and continue through setup until the transfer or restore options appear.
- Choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup and sign in with the Apple Account used to create that backup.
- Choose the intended backup. Check its date and size to distinguish it from other backups associated with the account.
- Keep the iPad connected while it restores. Photos, apps, and other cloud-synced content may continue downloading after the initial setup completes. Apple transfer guidance.
If the new iPad has already been set up
Apple’s documented backup-restore route requires erasing an iPad that has already completed setup. Erasing removes its current contents. Before proceeding, check the new iPad for anything you need to keep and make a separate copy or backup of it. Only then follow Apple’s instructions to erase an iPad and restart setup to restore the backup.

Restore from a Mac or PC backup
- Use the Mac or PC that contains the backup. Apple’s restore instructions use Finder on newer Macs, and Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows and older supported Mac configurations. Apple’s computer-backup instructions.
- Connect the new iPad, open the relevant app, select the iPad, and choose the restore option.
- Select the backup you want, checking its date and size. Enter the password if the backup is encrypted.
- Keep the iPad connected while the restore completes. Apple says Health and Activity data from an iOS device or Apple Watch will not transfer from an unencrypted computer backup. An encrypted backup requires its password to restore. Apple’s encrypted-backup guidance.
Transfer cellular service separately
Moving data does not automatically move cellular service. If the provider supports eSIM Quick Transfer between iPads, follow the offer shown during setup. Apple also documents starting a plan transfer later in Settings. Availability varies by carrier and plan; if no transfer option appears, contact the provider to activate service on the new iPad. Apple’s eSIM transfer guidance.
