It is an x86 handheld PC with SteamOS, Proton, and a game-by-game compatibility program. “ARM handheld,” by contrast, describes a processor architecture, not one consistent device or gaming experience. Valve’s 2026 work to run x86 games on ARM through FEX is promising, but it does not establish that arbitrary ARM handhelds can run a Steam Deck library or outperform it.
Start with the games you want to play
Make a list of the games you would actually buy or use, then check whether each is available through the storefront and software on the specific handheld you are considering. For Steam Deck, Valve’s Deck Verified program gives players information about how games play on Deck. Valve said in a 2026 Steamworks presentation that 25,000+ games were categorized as Playable or Verified; that is Valve’s combined count, not an independent audit or a promise that every title runs equally well.

Pay particular attention to multiplayer games. Compatibility can depend on online services and anti-cheat systems, so check the current status of the exact game rather than assuming that a general compatibility layer guarantees access. Deck Verified is evidence about Steam Deck, not a score that can be applied to other handhelds.

ARM is a processor architecture, not a single operating system or gaming platform. An ARM handheld might rely on Android-native games, stream games from another computer, or attempt to run PC games locally through a compatibility layer. Those routes have different game libraries and requirements; the exact model and software matter.

Local PC games on ARM
In a 2026 Steamworks hardware talk, Valve described expanding Proton for ARM64 so x86 games can run on Steam Frame’s ARM chip using FEX. This is a specific development effort for Steam Frame, not a general release or compatibility guarantee for every ARM device. The presentation also describes Android versions as a possible route for games that already have mobile-optimized builds.
Streaming is different from running a game locally
Streaming can let a handheld display a game that runs on a separate gaming PC, but it depends on having a capable host and a suitable network. Valve says Steam Frame streaming is optimized and does not require special developer integration; its standalone verification criteria are separate. Do not treat streaming support as proof that an ARM handheld can execute the same game on its own.

How Steam Deck’s software path differs
Steam Deck is an x86 PC handheld running SteamOS. Valve describes Proton as a compatibility layer that lets games run without developers having to port them, while Deck Verified communicates how games play on Deck. That gives Steam-focused players a defined compatibility workflow, but not universal compatibility.
Valve’s own 2022 Steam Deck booklet puts it this way: “Steam Deck is a PC, but it doesn’t come with Windows.” SteamOS is Linux-based, and the experience is built around Steam. If your games depend on Windows-specific software, non-Steam launchers, or multiplayer anti-cheat, check those individual requirements before choosing.

Hardware, controls, and battery: compare exact models
Valve’s Steam Deck specifications list a custom 6 nm AMD APU with a Zen 2 four-core/eight-thread CPU and RDNA 2 GPU, 16 GB LPDDR5 memory, and SteamOS 3 based on Arch. These are Deck specifications, not a universal benchmark against ARM devices.
The Deck OLED has a 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display with refresh rates up to 90 Hz. Valve lists a 50 Wh battery and estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay depending on content. Treat that as the manufacturer’s range, not a promise for a particular game, brightness, or settings. LCD and OLED Deck configurations are not identical; check the specifications for the model you intend to buy.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Valve highlights full-size thumbsticks, trackpads, gyro, four assignable rear buttons, quick suspend/resume, and desktop mode in its Deck OLED product information. Trackpads and gyro can be useful for games designed around mouse or keyboard input. Other handhelds vary, so compare the controls on the precise model rather than assuming all ARM devices share a layout.
What can and cannot be concluded about performance
Architecture alone does not determine which handheld is faster in a particular game. Performance depends on the device, game, software stack, resolution, settings, and power limits. The Valve materials cited here describe Steam Deck hardware and Valve’s ARM work, but do not provide controlled, side-by-side benchmarks against named ARM handhelds. There is therefore no supported universal speed, battery-life, or value winner between Steam Deck and ARM handhelds as a class.
For a meaningful comparison, look for measurements of the exact two models running the same game at comparable settings, and distinguish local play from streaming. Without those details, a broad claim that ARM is faster, more efficient, or a better buy is not established.
A practical buying decision
- List must-play games. Check each title’s current availability and compatibility on the specific device. For Deck, consult Deck Verified and investigate multiplayer or anti-cheat requirements.
- Decide where games will run. Separate local PC gaming from Android-native play and streaming from a PC. Confirm that the device supports the route you need.
- Compare the actual models. Check controls, display, battery capacity, operating system, supported services, and performance evidence for your games. “ARM” by itself does not specify these features.
- Consider connections and storage. Deck supports microSD expansion and USB-C connections for displays and peripherals. A dock or USB-C hub can help connect equipment, but Valve says docking does not improve performance; see its Steam Deck FAQ.
Verdict
Choose Steam Deck if your priority is a handheld PC centered on Steam with a documented compatibility system and controls designed for handheld play. Consider an ARM handheld when a particular model’s OS, native games, streaming setup, or confirmed local compatibility fits your needs. Until model-specific testing establishes otherwise, neither “ARM” nor the Steam Deck label alone answers which device performs better in your games.
