Start with the Steam games and online modes you actually play, then check whether each works on Linux or through Proton—including its launcher and anti-cheat. After that, compare the exact PC’s Linux or SteamOS support and graphics performance at your target resolution. A powerful computer can still fail to run a particular game’s multiplayer mode, and a Linux label or AMD GPU alone is not a compatibility guarantee.
Will your Steam games work on Linux?
Compatibility is a game-by-game question. Proton lets many Windows games run on Linux, but results vary by title and can change after game updates. Valve says the vast majority of the Steam library runs on SteamOS and gives a count of over 18,000 titles “last we checked.” That is Valve’s own point-in-time figure, not an independently verified current count or a guarantee about any particular game. Before buying a PC, make a short list of the games you care about and check each one, especially if you rely on competitive multiplayer. A game may launch while a launcher, middleware component, or online feature does not work as expected.

Valve’s Steam Deck Verified program evaluates input, display, seamlessness, and system support. Its checks include controller support and prompts, legible text at the Deck’s default resolution, launcher usability, and whether the game and middleware work through Proton, including anti-cheat. The rating categories describe the experience on Steam Deck, not a blanket certification for every desktop PC, Linux distribution, GPU, or configuration. Valve defines Verified as working well by default on Deck; Playable may require manual configuration; Unsupported is not currently considered playable on Deck; and Unknown means Valve has not checked it. Investigate anti-cheat and online play separately
Anti-cheat can prevent online play even when the PC has enough raw performance. Valve includes anti-cheat and middleware support in its compatibility review, and notes that some anti-cheat providers and media codecs are unsupported. Proton-specific blocking bugs or performance problems may also affect a game’s result. Valve’s compatibility review documentation

A concrete example is Apex Legends: in an update dated October 31, 2024, Respawn said it would block access from Linux, including Steam Deck running Linux. This illustrates why checking the game’s current developer or publisher guidance matters, particularly for online games. Respawn’s Linux and anti-cheat update

| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Games and online modes | Check every must-play title, including multiplayer, launcher, middleware, and anti-cheat compatibility. |
| Operating system and drivers | Confirm support for the exact PC hardware on the intended Linux distribution or SteamOS setup. |
| Graphics performance | Use independent benchmarks for the specific GPU and games at your target resolution and settings. |
| Updates and support | Find out how the system receives operating-system, firmware, and driver support; do not assume SteamOS device update handling applies to any desktop installation. |
| Price and configuration | Compare the full configuration and warranty rather than judging by a CPU or GPU name alone. |
Do not treat AMD as an automatic compatibility stamp
Valve says recent updates to Steam and SteamOS 3.8 improved compatibility with other AMD-powered PCs, including handhelds and desktops. That makes AMD-powered desktops worth considering, but it does not mean every AMD PC is supported, that SteamOS comes preinstalled, or that every game works on it. Check the particular model and intended operating system. Valve’s SteamOS page

Use the rating as a starting point, then look for current information about the game and its online features. Steam lets you select a compatibility tool for an individual game through that game’s properties. This is a troubleshooting option, not a way to guarantee compatibility by forcing Proton. - Dell Services: 1 Year Onsite Service provides support when and where you need it. Dell will come to your home, office, or location of choice, if an issue covered by Limited Hardware Warranty cannot be resolved remotely.
- Check the exact game. Review its Steam Deck category and current developer or publisher notes, with extra attention to anti-cheat and multiplayer.
- Check the system around the game. Verify that its launcher, middleware, codecs, and required online features work through Proton.
- Compare performance evidence. Look for benchmarks of the exact GPU in the games and resolution you plan to use; a compatibility label does not tell you how fast a desktop will run it.
- Try a per-game compatibility setting only as a troubleshooting step. Change it in the game’s Steam properties, then test the game and its required features rather than assuming the change resolves every issue.
