Claude Code usage tracking raises privacy questions, but Anthropic distinguishes operational telemetry from the content sent for model processing. Anthropic says Statsig telemetry records operational metrics—not code or file paths—while prompts and model outputs are separately transmitted to the model service. CI security is a separate issue: it depends on the credentials, workflow triggers, permissions, and isolation configured for each run. These are vendor-documented descriptions, not an independent audit of a particular setup.
What Claude Code usage tracking collects
Anthropic describes Claude Code as a local client that communicates with model services over the network. Its documentation separates that model traffic from operational telemetry collected through Statsig. The latter covers metrics such as latency, reliability, and usage patterns. Anthropic states: “This logging does not include any code or file paths.” Anthropic’s Claude Code Data Usage documentation describes the distinction.

That distinction does not mean no code leaves the machine: prompts and model outputs are sent to the model service so Claude can process the request. Anthropic says this traffic uses TLS and is not encrypted at rest. Those statements describe the vendor’s documented handling; they do not establish what a particular organization’s proxies, cloud provider, or logging configuration may capture.
Telemetry defaults and controls depend on the provider
Anthropic documents nonessential services as enabled by default for direct Anthropic API use, but disabled by default when Claude Code uses Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. The documented controls for direct API use are:

Defaults and settings can vary by provider and release. Check the documentation for the installed Claude Code version and confirm which provider the organization actually routes requests through. See Anthropic’s data usage settings.
Privacy implications beyond telemetry
Bug reports and feedback
Using /bug sends Anthropic a copy of the full conversation history, including code. That is materially different from the operational telemetry described above. Anthropic documents the separate DISABLE_BUG_COMMAND=1 opt-out. Its documentation also says feedback transcripts are used to debug related issues and improve Claude Code, not to train generative models, and are retained for 30 days. An organization may explicitly opt into the Developer Partner Program to provide training material; Anthropic says that program is limited to its own API, not Bedrock or Vertex. Server retention and local session storage
Anthropic says a zero-data-retention organization API key prevents server-side retention of chat transcripts. Separately, local sessions may be retained for up to 30 days to resume work, with configurable behavior. Server-side retention and local session storage are different controls; a zero-retention key should not be interpreted as deleting local session files. Corporate network monitoring
Organizations can route traffic through a corporate proxy for monitoring and compliance. Anthropic lists api.anthropic.com, statsig.anthropic.com, and sentry.io among required endpoints. Its proxy documentation says Claude Code does not currently support NO_PROXY or SOCKS proxies, which may affect network rules and routing. Review Anthropic’s corporate proxy guidance.

How to assess CI security
Telemetry settings do not determine whether a CI job is secure. Claude Code supports non-interactive execution with -p in scripts, pipelines, and GitHub Actions, so the workflow’s own access and trigger design matter. Anthropic documents read-only permissions by default and approval for additional actions such as editing files or running commands; write access is described as limited to the working directory and its descendants, subject to permissions. These boundaries help control actions but do not eliminate prompt-injection or supply-chain risks. See Anthropic’s security documentation.
For a CI deployment, review the workflow and its surrounding controls rather than assuming product defaults are enough:

- Limit the GitHub App and job permissions to the specific repository and operations required.
- Check which events trigger workflows, especially whether untrusted pull requests can execute code or access secrets.
- Protect credentials from untrusted code, scope secrets to the jobs that need them, and rotate credentials under your organization’s policy.
- Pin and review third-party actions; protect workflow-file changes through the repository’s review rules.
- Review the tools and commands Claude Code is permitted to run, and use project-specific permissions for sensitive repositories.
- Consider devcontainers or another isolation mechanism when the job needs additional separation from the runner host.
These are operational security practices to apply alongside Claude Code’s controls, not guarantees Anthropic says the product enforces automatically. Anthropic’s GitHub Actions guidance calls out app configuration, workflow triggers, app permissions, and API or cloud credentials.
Choosing between direct API, Bedrock, and Vertex
The documented provider-specific difference is the default for nonessential telemetry. For the rest of the privacy and security picture, compare the organization’s actual configurations rather than assuming the provider name settles the question.

The documentation establishes the telemetry-default distinction; the other rows depend on the organization’s cloud and CI setup. Anthropic’s data usage documentation and GitHub Actions guidance are starting points for that review.
When a gateway is part of the setup
A third-party gateway can provide centralized authentication, usage tracking, budgets, and audit logging, according to Anthropic’s gateway guide. Those features also mean the gateway’s logging, access, retention, and security practices belong in the privacy review. Anthropic explicitly says it does not endorse, maintain, or audit LiteLLM, so evaluate any gateway independently rather than treating its mention as a vendor assurance.
